The Drop: Week of September 16th 2013 New Releases
The Drop

It’s finally here. The ambitious, long-awaited open world from Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto V, hits PS3 this week. The Grand Theft Auto franchise has commanded the attention of gamers for years, and the launch of a new entry in the series is a true industry event. And this is no exception.

Grand Theft Auto V introducers gamers to a trio of protagonists pulled (once again) into a life of crime. New to the series, Grand Theft Auto V supports dynamic switching between these three characters, enabling players to weave in and out of action — and the sprawling city of Los Santos. Plan heists, drive luxurious cars, grab a round of golf, or just cause trouble. All and more await in Los Santos.

But Grand Theft Auto V isn’t the only game dropping next week. Real Boxing hits PS Vita and brings with it an eye-catching boxing simulation with refined controls and additional features. For the complete list of games coming, head on down.

Enjoy the Drop, and tell us what you think of our new, streamlined format!

  • I think the post could use a small amount of information on the games, straight to the point would be fine though. Also, a price tag wouldn’t hurt either for those of us who still buy the Playstation Network Cards at convenience stores. That’d give us some time to run down to the store & load up the PSN wallet.

  • This being the last update of the summer, I can’t help but notice that Terraria never actually made it to the Vita. I’m loving the idies lately, but I have a need for Terraria. Please don’t make me use my television.

  • I expect the fine folks at Rockstar and Sony will stagger the downloads by territory such that Canadians will be allowed to preload at roughly noon on the 16th, thus ensuring all goes smoothly at midnight. I mean, it would be crazy to do otherwise, right ? Right ?

  • Honestly, the new format sucks. What was wrong with the old one? Were people’s fingers getting tired from all that scrolling? Doesn’t seem to affect their willingness to read page after page of comments.

I couldn’t care less about the blogcast, which was more than 2 hours long this week. Have fun looking up info that way.

I could go elsewhere for info, but with the old format I didn’t have to.

Please bring the old format back next week.

  • just seems lazy…..bring back the old format please….

  • @gohan16ken WHAT THE HELL MAN? I don’t wanna be ofensive man BUT HOW FAST DO YOU WANT IT TO BE? I will have to wait 2 days+ to download GTA5, and you are complaining that IT TOOK 1 HOUR TO DOWNLOAD A 12 GB File! JEEZ… Sorry but JESUS, Enjoy what you got.

  • WOW, this GTA non preload aint gonna end well. Total fail.

  • Just wanted to register my deep disappointment about how pre-loading of this huge game is being handled. Very disappointing. It’s the first time I’ve got digital for a big game, and I did so because we were told we’d be able to pre-load.

  • Rockstar just announced we could preload the game starting at 3AM EST on Monday in the US. Now it appears Sony has just tweeted as well and overruled that decision and will not allow this in the US. Can you verify this? I think it would be the decent thing to do.

  • any word on when is TERRARIA coming out on PS VITA?!? we’ve been waiting for so Long!! -_-

  • @89 Rey is/was better than you make him be.. It was always a good time with rey on the blog!

  • Honestly i won’t blame rockstar if they decide to support ms and xbox one next gen with exclusive deals, sony has shown they don’t care about US gamers by screwing up and false advertsiment.

  • What happened to psone classics?

  • @18.I am a fan of the GTA series as well. However not everyone is.

  • old format is way better! rockstar please make gta in ps vita!

  • Grand Theft Auto V, Real Boxing, Hot Wheels World’s Best Driver, Capcom Fighting Evolution ..for this week..looks like ima get all 4..even though i know im going to spend 98% of the time playing GTA V…lol

  • I am still pretty irritated there s no preloading for GTA 5. Not only am I going to have to wait a day or two for it to download, but I also have to work so that gives me even less time to play it. Thanks a ton, I should have known better than to do the digital download.

  • 10 bucks says psn will be down sometime on Tuesday because Sony feels the need to funnel thousands of downloads into a specific time…good job in advance

  • in 18 hours psn will explode becouse US PSN don’t have predownloads -.-

  • i wonder how fast will i be able to download the 18gb with my 60 mbps internet?

  • Thank goodness the past few weeks have been so loaded with content, ’cause there’s nothing interesting this week.

Not a huge fan of open world games in general… and when they don’t even take them to an interesting fantasy world, what’s the point? If I wanted to run around the real world I’d… um… well, run around the real world. lol
And I don’t really have any interest in committing crimes in the real world either, just to be frank.

But I’ve still got FFXIV, KH1.5, Diablo 3, and more to play… and then there’s of course the LoL World Championships to watch. So lot’s to do even with a boring week.

  • Really don’t like the new format. It doesn’t let anyone know about smaller titles and generally isn’t that friendly; it’s a bland list.

Additionally, I strongly feel this goes against Sony’s ethos of devs first. Sony is loved nowadays because they treat every dev and game equally. Digital games from AAAs and digital games from indies get the same amount of blog posts. By changing the drop to be like this, you’re clearly treating non AAA titles like second-rate citizens. Customers just don’t get a good idea of what’s coming out.

To top it all off, indie titles, which I’m sure would make up a large chunk of the games that only get a title mention, don’t have a lot of marketing backbone to them. It’s posts like this that grant them exposure. People click in for GTAV, people might spy a screen of Real Boxing and go “Wow, those graphics are awesome!”. Relegating it to a quick mention is not sufficient, as the majority of people aren’t going to go out of their way to research a boxing game.

I am very unhappy with the new blog layout, and I sincerely hope it changes to better serve both consumers and developers.

  • Oh boy! Its really happening, no preload for GTA it is then? I expect this to be a huge fail because even 100MBit down link wont save us from waiting looong hours before the game gets downloaded tomorrow. Sony, you will never learn, will you? Dissapointed.

  • @115 I agree wholeheartedly…I get they didn’t want widespread leaks…but the game was already leaked…just let us preload a day or 2 early

  • Like I said it will take at least a day or two. So many people are going to be downloading this all at once. I can see the psn going down, that would not surprise me at all.

  • the GTA5 no pre download is horrible, punishing honest customer who use their service.
This my first day 1 preorder and it a bad first impression. i excited about going all digital with
the PS4 but not anymore because of unreliable sony psn is.

  • GTA V!! :D

  • Why would I like the format of this blog?

You highlight a PS3 game that everyone already knows is coming out and the lesser known titles get a small bullet with no information about them. I am however, glad they tell what system each is coming to.

As a PSP and PS Vita owner and not a PS3 owner I would like some equal time or even a quarter of the time dedicated to games for these systems.

As for the blog, I am well aware of it and know how to find it on Fridays if I care to listen to it. I choose not to spend two hours listening to a program that will highlight many of the games I can not buy on the PS Vita.

Please take this into consideration when redesigning the blog. I hope you can find a happy medium for all Playstation users.

  • Not sure why anyone would release a game the same day as GTAV. But best of luck to them

  • So many ppl complaining about a pre-load…” It’s gonna take a day or more…” Upgrade your Internet before you whine and complain 18gb done in about an hour installing games sometimes takes longer than the download.

  • OMG here on the Blog too?…so the stupid reviews aren’t enough…dont tell me Sony will start to s*** Rockstar Ba***…..where are the description and pics of the other games…..anyway super weak drop….at least there is Real Boxing…I’m curious with that game,Capcom fighting evolution as well…other than these…weak drop.

  • @ 113 Superstone – Oh yes I agree with you…what happened with PS1 classics Sony?…..come on there are tons of good games that you guys still need to bring to the Store…I’m currently playing some games on my PS1 because they aren’t in the store.

  • Ah the drop most intriguing game there of course is GTA5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I haven’t downloaded my digital preorder for GTA V. How do I get a refund so I do not have to wait 3 days to run the game – as we know it will take days to download the game now with no preload as was advertised. Here is what I thought Sony learned but obviously have not…and that is be forward and honest about such disappointing matters. Stonewalling makes you look dishonest and slimey.

  • I would absolutely love for someone to tell me how “pre-loading” the game would have reduced your download time of “three days” as some of you claim? If they allowed pre-loading, everyone would have started downloading it a day earlier. You’d still have had to wait three days to download it. Pre-loading doesn’t magically download faster than a release day midnight launch. It’s the same PSN, the same number of people who are going to try and download it ALL AT THE SAME TIME (most likely), and you have the same sh***y or not-sh***y internet speed. The only difference with no pre-load is that you’re going to wait an extra 21 hours to start the download (3am EDT for the supposed pre-load, 12am EDT for the normal midnight launch). If you’re that worried about playing the game Day One, and you were already expecting to take three days to download, you should have just bought the physical copy.

I for one will be avoiding this whole mess. Got Dragon Fantasy, Killzone:M and KH 1.5 to play. No time for something like GTA V.

  • Hey guys, you should include more information on the Drop. I like it when you also include information about discounts and sales.

  • I canceled my pre order on amazon because it said I was able to pre load GTA V on my PS3, Now this crap. Thanks Sony for screwing this up big time. If PS4 will be like this I will just continue to purchase my games on a physical disc.

  • @135,

Its simple but alow me to explain anyway. The game preload does change the amount of download time. In addition it could be spread over a period BEFORE release. Instead with release customers from whom Sony earned the most money are unnecessarily and idiotically delayed. It does increase download time by waiting for release because you will have servers jammed by people that not only preordered the game but with impulse digital buys upon release. You will also have servers being bombed with players actually running the game – you know the ones smart enough not to trust Sony. And as I said the worst part of this entire debacle is Sony sitting quietly by the cash register and saying nothing. Pretty gutless actually.

  • Clements I love you dude and I know it’s not your fault but I need to voice my opinion on the complete lack of communication on Sony and Rockstar’s part on this GTA V digital download. I like many decided to cancel my physical preorder when I heard we would be able to pre download only to find out that we will not be able to AND that there is a chance the digital version may not play as well as the physical copy. This was my first foray into the world of day one digital to test the waters for the PS4 and all I can say is that I’m not pleased at all. I know it’s not your fault at all Ry, I’m just using this as a platform to make my voice heard by Sony.

  • I don’t like the new drop layout to be honest. I’d rather have some info and pricing, maybe a screenshot as well. Still, thanks for the info as usual!

In the future I’d love to see more and more PS2 and PSOne games. Complete the collection!

  • Well if you’re not into GTAV this is a very poor drop… I mean, I’m happy for the people who had been waiting for it, but there’s nothing for me in here D:

I hope we PS Plus users could get early access to Battlefield 4 Beta.

  • Oh and also, It would be totally awesome if you could Play PS2 classics on the PS Vita, I don’t mind if you could do it maybe via remote play in the PS3, but I would totally kill to be able to play Persona 3 FES on mi vita.

  • Cant wait till tomorrow to play my copy of GTA VVVVVVVVVVVV

  • GTA V great finally.

  • So it’s 12:08 am now. Has anyone been able to start downloading?

  • WOW Sony, is 12:09am and guess what I cant download my copy of GTA V.

  • Man, I’m glad I’m not a Grand Theft Auto fan, nor a big supporter of Digital Download games. HERE’S TO THE FUTURE GUYS! A discless future where Digital Content has no value after its been purchased. What’s the point in battling DRM if you’re still all about Digital Downloads?

To you guys that are having to answer frustrations and questions, I feel for ya. What a tough job but, you’re in the industry! Thousands of people covet your jobs, even if you do get ripped apart. You could totally see this coming with a game this big and that many people buying it. Its the nature of the beast with something this big people. Be patient. You’re the ones that chose to Digital Download. This is what happens when you do.

My apologizes and empathy to the moderators, but its work, and its work in the video game industry that comes with a lot of fancy perks. I’m jealous.

  • 12:18 and i cant download gta either. hopefully it wont be to much longer, i kinda wanted to start it downloading before i went to bed

  • What time is it o it’s 12:19 and still no GTA V it said come back on the 17th at 12:01 eat

  • Ok this is BS. It’s 12:20 eastern time and all the gta v page says is overview. It did say download about 10 min ago but it crashed the app and restarted my system. I knew it was a mistake to buy digitally. Trying not to turn my system on and off due to the constant beeping when the damn thing turns on.
