PlayStation Plus: October Preview

I’m a sucker for fantasy. If a game allows it, I’ll create an elf mage because magic is awesome. This month I can do just that as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is entering the Instant Game Collection. With a tale crafted by NY Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, stunning visuals from Todd McFarlane, and a customizable combat system, Reckoning has a lot to offer RPG fans. The mix-and-match combat means I can get my magic fix while also smashing things in the face with a hammer, or stabbing them with a sword and other various pointy weapons, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Sine Mora on PS VitaKingdoms of Amalur Reckoning on PS3Poker Night 2 on PS3Shadow of the Colossus on PS3Hotline Miami on PS Vita

You may remember that last month we added Team Ico’s original cult classic ICO to the IGC, so their equally beloved sequel Shadow of the Colossus seemed like a natural follow-up. Slaying the majestic Colossi should make you feel something (read: incredibly guilty), but hey, you gotta save your #1 girl, right? In a completely different vein, Plus members will also receive Poker Night 2, which is an amusing twist on the classic card game. With GLaDOS as the dealer and opponents like Claptrap from Borderlands and Ash from Army of Darkness you can sit back, have a laugh and bet all your fake money away.

PS Vita owners are in for a couple treats – both the gorgeous shmup Sine Mora and the critically acclaimed top-down shooter Hotline Miami are joining the Instant Game Collection later this month. Sine Mora boasts stunning backdrops and cinematics as well as a slightly different shoot-em-up mechanic – you are in a constant race against the clock and the only way to get more time is to kill enemies. Hotline Miami embraces hardcore twitch-based play, which means you may need to repeat levels multiple times, but once you get through it it’s incredibly satisfying. Since Hotline Miami is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download it for both PS Vita and PS3.

These games will hit the Instant Game Collection at various times throughout the month, so check back with us every Monday morning for that week’s update.

  • still disappointed with the service. I really feel as Nortg America Playstation Plus is like little brother program next to EU Plus. The last few months have been awful on contact, or just EU “hand me down” and that shouldn’t be. Why cant we just do a program where we get the same all around, like PSN pass port.

The PSN pass port could include being able to import ps3&vita game, titles like the Tales games or PSO2, on psn.

  • I just remembered Europe also gave away Ico/Sotc collection as 1 game, and we get it as 2 games back to back -_-

Weak Ps3 month especially when the next PS Plus update will be when Ps4 is out.

  • Always had my eye on Kingdoms of Amalar. Very happy to see it come to the IGC. Since I’m probably only one of 5 people with a current gen video game console NOT playing GTA V, I’ll be able start it as soon as it’s available (hopefully Oct 1 *fingers crossed*).

  • WOW really awesome month. I already have Shadow of Colossus and Hotline Miami, but this is really spectacular. Best update since June IMO.

  • Sucks I’ve owned Rayman Origins, Hotline Miami, and Sine Mora… so three Vita games that I’m missing on this PS Plus deal… Ah well. :/

SotC, I’ll get, even though I have the Collection on hard-copy. Odd that you separated them like that. Lookin’ for Dragon’s Crown to show up on IGC, possibly.

  • Sine Mora? oh hell yeah!

  • Nice selection, many games I look forward to (Kingdom of Alamur, Miami Hotline). I am thinking of selling my disk with SotC and Ico now that we have both titles.
I didn’t know Kingdom of Alamur had R.A. Salvatore involved in it. Seem intriguing. I used to read those Drizzt Do’urden books when I was a kid

  • Here are my feedbacks for this month :

Great variety of game very good month but not as great as eu games….

Finally : no psp gameeeeeee : thks

Amalur don t have it will plat it… At least one rpg
Shadow great game… Should have been coupled in 1 game last month
    Miami will discover it
Poker I love poker i love sam and max!
    Sine i hate smu…

So very good games i feel like listened

Still game of the year 2012 provided to eu with fc3….

  • I have all but two of these, but I’m still excited for the month — I own Amalur on PC but never played it. So PS3 it is!

  • I own Hotline Miami and Shadow of the Colossus, but this is a strong month for the free stuff!! You take my money Sony but I don’t care!

  • Wow, what a month! I already own and got platinum for Kingdoms of Alamur. But it is WORTH many playthroughs. What a game!

The other games look too. Can’t wait for October! Thank you Sony!

    MAJOR SPOILER*******

Kingdoms of Alamur has a game-breaking bug in it. If you don’t like soilers, ignore this. But this is pretty important to let others know.
There is a desert camp in a small area of the desert. There are a few side quests. One of them involves a bridge-like area and water. Do not do this unless you’re done with everything else. If you do something wrong in it or if you leave without completing the side-mission, it will disable the fast-travel. That will literally RUIN the game for you. So either skip those side missions or do those last if you want to 100% the game.

Other than that, great selections here. Kingdoms of Alamur alone would keep a person busy for weeks. It is considered as Skyrim’s top competitior. :)

  • An amazing month! Looking forward to Amalur, Hotline Miami and Sine Mora… wasn’t expecting Hotline Miami to be up there so early but I am glad :)

  • The games this month are pretty good, but splitting the Ico/SoTc collection between two months is still complete bs move on Ps+’s part. We all knew that you held SoTC back so you could release this month and say “We’re listening to your criticism and giving you SoTC like you asked!!!” when you gave it all to EU at once.

  • Wow, really good month. I think it’s cool we got Ico and SoTC back to back.

  • i already have amalur so not really something i’m excited for :P

  • /sigh…

I was hoping for Assassin’s Creed III or Far Cry 3 but nope, none of em are here and worst of all is that I own SotC, KoA: R and Sine Mora and don’t care at all for Hot Line Miami (i played stuff like it in the 80s care not have no love for retro crap and believe me, I tried retro city rampage and hated it) tho I may try Poker Night 2.

PS+ leaves me with no other choice than buying only AAA games and forget about everything else, for example this moth buy GTAV and FIFA14 nothing else, all the other games including Puppeteer will be available someday I’m sure of it. For October you can probably just buy Beyond: Two Souls and skip everything else (BF4/Watchdogs for PS4 unless you want to play through the campaign twice cause saves wont be compatible between PS3/PS4 versions of those games, only online progress will remain).

I’d really love to see newer content, it’s frustrating when you are an avid gamer and most of the content you see every month you already own it.

  • My previous comment being said, I’m still very happy to get Hotline Miami (wanted to buy but didnt think it would control well on Ps3 and there was no demo…) and KOAR. I wanted SOTC (already posted my criticism about them mysteriously not being bundled for NA customers earlier) so from a gameplay standpoint I’m happy to see it. Poker Night 2 is pretty meh, but Poker Night 1 was fun and I’ll probably play a few rounds of it.

I don’t own a Vita, sorry Sina Mora.

  • Oooh my godd!!! This is awesome!! Beig a ps plus member frikin rules

  • ok someone just TRY to complain about the selection this time…. great stuff.

  • Rather meh collection. I’d like to see a major game of the year Triple A title, haven’t seen one since Uncharted 3 appeared on the IGC.

  • @Kristine- Thanks for your reply, reason I asked is because I recall in some months you mention some sales in advance.
Non the less I think you should consider promoting a sale on Vita games, if not PSP and PSX compatible Vita games. The ‘Get $10 back’ offer is an excellent incentive for a consumer to buy, as I myself have already prepared a list of games I’m thinking of purchasing.
AS There are now more/new Vita owners, it works great as a handheld system for classic PSX games as well, thanks to the Vita not using a lot of its battery charge when playing a PSX game, as well as it’s Sleep mode function. Furthermore the OLED screen really brings out the colorful beauty of these classic titles.

That’s about enough rambling from me, looking forward to future Plus deals and offers~

  • Good lineup! People will love Hotline Miami!

  • I’m excited but also kind of depressed. I really wanted to play Dragon’s Dogma DA, or ACIII.
Oh well. I already have Alamur when it was on sale last year for 39.99 and I had a $30 off coupon. I’d even put the disc in to play for a while yesterday. Guess I had a feeling it was on it’s way.
Is Hotline Miami… really bloody? Not into that stuff to much. Happy for two Vita games though. I still suggest Hakuoki if we go back to PSP stuff ever.
I hope we see more RPG’s on the IGC, for Vita and PS3. Also I like the early info too.

  • Looks like a solid month. Excited for KoA and Hotline Miami!

Would love to see US PS+ get these titles that Europe already has :
    • Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen
    • Catherine
    • Okami HD

    Thanks for the good work!

  • Lots of variety, awesome!

  • Wow !!! u did it sony !! this is a great month for us, i really would LOVE to see Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen in the next month, it would be AWESOME month for RPG fans (like now) and for Ps vita would be awesome if u can get Velocity Ultra or Fifa 13 (since the 14 is out now… the soccer player have no love :() and some discount on Dragons crown ! okay that was too much..

Thanks guys !!!!! THIS is what we want.

  • YES!! My favorite month of PS Plus so far!!

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is something I’ve been crossing my fingers to be added to the IGC for quite some time! Shadow of the Colossus is also incredible not to mention Poker Night 2 and Hotline Miami (since it’s cross-buy).

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Playstation Team!!! :D

  • Decent month. I’ve been holding off buying Kingdoms of Amalur because I had a hunch it might show up here. Glad I waited! Can’t wait to get playing. Not overly keen on anything else, but KoA makes it a worthwhile month, and I’ll give the others a shot eventually.

  • Still no NFS:MW, ACIII and Far Cry 3…

  • Wow. I was just looking at KoA earlier today on Amazon to buy. Hell to the freakin’ yeah. October looks to be a very nice month for us. Very awesome. =)

  • I bought hotline Miami a couple months ago… it’s one of my favorite games of all time enjoy people! and great update!!

  • I hope we get a sale on the Worms game coming out for vita. This IGC for this month is kinda meh for me.

  • So many good games. Now I need time to play all of them.

    Thanks Kristine! <3

  • Sine Mora and Hotline Miami I’ve been expecting for a while. Good, I’ll finally be able to play them. Poker Night was unexpected. But, I should have seen SotC coming after getting ICO last month. You guys should advertise the Remote Play features. They work the best out of all the games that support it. KoA:R, that’s the big surprise. I’ve never heard of it.

There’s a sad lack of big AAA’s that Europe gets these days. Hopefully this constantly improves.

  • Oh wow! No PSP games forced on us! But we still don’t get any full Vita games, only PSN ones. WHy does Europe get two full Vita games per month and we just get PSP or PSN games?

  • Aw, come on. I bought SOTC when it was on sale back in July for $5, and now it’s free. Bah.

  • Also what’s leaving the IGC ?

  • I JUST bought Hotline Miami.

  • I don’t own a Vita and I’m not buying a Vita. pretty weak update hopefully next month we can get Dora the Explorer I’m wishing upon a star:)

  • I already own KoA, but I’ve never played SOTC or HLM, so I’m really satisfied this month :)

  • For the $4 I spend per month on PS+, I’m pumped for this update running into November’s PS4 launch! I have Hotline Miami on PC and hate the controls, so getting this on vita/ps3 is MAGIC!

And I’m interested in Kingdoms, especially after the news that the studio is now defunct.

Good line-up before the PS4 and Battlefield 4 launch!

  • Wow what a top notch month. That is some insane value right there. Hotline Miami is a highly rated new game on Vita that I was very tempted to buy, Shadow of the Colossus is a classic and epic, Kingdoms of Amalur is a homerun AAA that I will without a doubt put a lot of time into. Even Poker I’ll probably put a lot of time into as the perfect “time waster”. Great month.

  • Excited about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Sine Mora, but we stiil one step behind Europe.

  • That’s a good looking month!

KoA, SotC and Hotline Miami are great! Already own Poker Night 2, but it’s nevertheless a good freebie if you enjoy the characters and enjoy Poker to some degree. Sine Mora’s a great shooter as well, though I already own it on another platform.

Here’s hoping for Dragon’s Dogma: DA in November!!!

  • Not as good as EU. But it’s better than what we’ve been getting lately.

Sine Mora is kind of weak because I can go get that for one dollar right now on the humble bundle weekly thing.

I look forward to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and SOTC.

The more triple A games the better. <3
(Please give us Far Cry 3 and dragon's dogma dark arisen like EU. EU keeps getting great stuff.)

  • Not a bad month, but knowing Europe is getting Far Cry 3 sucks a lot of enjoyment out of it.

  • Excellent! This month is going to be great!

    Thank you!

    =============

DOUBT ABOUT PROMOTION: “Get $10 for Every $50 Spent,…”

Is it for PSVITA games too?

  • Terrific month, especially after the -in my opinion- fair to middling past couple of drops we’ve had. I’ve had my eye on Kingdoms of Amalur for quite some time, and even suggested it as a viable PS+ candidate before it was even added to the IGC in the EU. And while I’ve already played Hotline Miami, I’m glad more people will be able to experience the joy of executing a perfect string of brutal kills. I’m also glad that it’s the cross-buy option available. This needs to be the case more often.

  • Good game, too bad I already have it.

  • *Hope we’ll have some good sales this month as well. You guys were really on a roll for a few weeks with the Japan and PAX sales, but things have really dried up since.
