PlayStation Plus: October Preview

I’m a sucker for fantasy. If a game allows it, I’ll create an elf mage because magic is awesome. This month I can do just that as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is entering the Instant Game Collection. With a tale crafted by NY Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, stunning visuals from Todd McFarlane, and a customizable combat system, Reckoning has a lot to offer RPG fans. The mix-and-match combat means I can get my magic fix while also smashing things in the face with a hammer, or stabbing them with a sword and other various pointy weapons, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Sine Mora on PS VitaKingdoms of Amalur Reckoning on PS3Poker Night 2 on PS3Shadow of the Colossus on PS3Hotline Miami on PS Vita

You may remember that last month we added Team Ico’s original cult classic ICO to the IGC, so their equally beloved sequel Shadow of the Colossus seemed like a natural follow-up. Slaying the majestic Colossi should make you feel something (read: incredibly guilty), but hey, you gotta save your #1 girl, right? In a completely different vein, Plus members will also receive Poker Night 2, which is an amusing twist on the classic card game. With GLaDOS as the dealer and opponents like Claptrap from Borderlands and Ash from Army of Darkness you can sit back, have a laugh and bet all your fake money away.

PS Vita owners are in for a couple treats – both the gorgeous shmup Sine Mora and the critically acclaimed top-down shooter Hotline Miami are joining the Instant Game Collection later this month. Sine Mora boasts stunning backdrops and cinematics as well as a slightly different shoot-em-up mechanic – you are in a constant race against the clock and the only way to get more time is to kill enemies. Hotline Miami embraces hardcore twitch-based play, which means you may need to repeat levels multiple times, but once you get through it it’s incredibly satisfying. Since Hotline Miami is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download it for both PS Vita and PS3.

These games will hit the Instant Game Collection at various times throughout the month, so check back with us every Monday morning for that week’s update.

  • will we ever get HBO go app?!

    No silver spoon here.

I’m willing to bet that nobody on this blog knows financial struggle more than I do. Fortunately, I’ve been slowly pulling out of the mire little by little each month over the past few years, to the point now where I actually feel quite comfortable with my situation. Dedication and focus is all that’s required.

The mistake you’re making is putting all of your stock into what is essentially a gaming grab bag and expecting to come up with gold after each pull. The way you and some other gamers are banking on Plus to deliver the exact types of content you crave is simply asinine. That’s an obvious gamble, and if it fails to pay off, the blame is on you guys.

Make due with what you’ve got. If you want something, buy it, don’t wait for it to be given to you. If you can’t afford it, save up for it, or swallow your pride and accept your place on the social totem pole, and then do whatever it takes (within respectable bounds) to rise up the ranks to get where you want to be… or else, simply be quiet and fade away like you’d deserve to if you’re not going to try.

  • I already have Sine Mora and Hotline Miami for my Vita, so this is the third month I’ve gotten nothing on the Vita side of Plus. It’s a little frustrating, but it happens. I can deal with that.
No PSP game for a change (thank god). Not that I have an issue with PSP games being included. It’s got a big enough library to dig through, but passing it off in place of a Vita game every single month is ridiculous. Maybe every few months, but not every month.

Amalur being offered is pretty good so I can get behind that.
Don’t know a thing about Poker Night. Probably won’t care for it, but I’ll give it a go.
SotC is fantastic, but I’m a little annoyed that the Ico/SotC collection was split and passed off as separate so you could use it for 2 months. Kind of cheap of you considering both EU and JP got both as the collection as one game.

So yeah, some of it really rubs me the wrong way, but it’s a better month than we’ve been getting lately.

  • Already have most of it from Europe but once again not buying games pays off, thanks sony

  • I can’t stand hearing and seeing so many crybabies begging for handouts all the time. The sense of entitlement plaguing our society these days is really irritating to me. It’s just not right.

  • A Solid month but I continue to question what the NA team is actually doing. We get the “other half” of the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus combo that we should have gotten last month. Split them up so when we get the second part we are supposed to forget that the games were released as a “pack” and not individually in the first place.

We get some quality “classic” games this month and an extremely popular Vita title with Hotline Miami. However, where are the quality “current” games that the EU and JP PS+ programs are getting? I know you guys have a harder time getting publishers to put their games on + but I really hope things improve when the PS4 is released.

  • Nothing for me this month, I already own 3 out of 5 of these, it really does seem like Europe is getting better games on PS+. I still love PS+ and understand that some people will already have these games, so hopefully November will end up being better for me.

  • Always late to post, so hopefully you continue reading threads.

    Love the lineup.

But worry about one thing, what if I want to purchase Sine Mora, if it goes on sale?
    ***Please Fix This Soon***

As for last week, there were a few issues.
    1. You could not call what you did with Assassins Creed “a sale”.
    2. The price difference for Lone Survivor should not be called “a discount”.
    3. I would prefer better games in IGC then missions such as “drive a guy, to do his deal” with GTA.

A+ Urban Trial Freestyle, even without the plus disount, was a great game for vita for $5.

    See you again soon.

  • @PrimerIncognito I’m sorry for having an opinion that isn’t “OMG SONY UR THE BEST!” This update has it’s ups and downs. I’m content with it and that’s all. It’s not fantastic and it not horrible. It’s simply better than it has been the last few months. That is my opinion. If you do not like my opinion then so be it.

  • Glad to see the selection in the IGC is picking up and finally starting to get better (kept saying it couldn’t get much worse and it proved to be untrue each and every month). Still think it’s a Far Cry (pun intended) from the quite new AAA titles EU/UK keep getting… especially when looking at all the awesome games they’ve gotten in the past 4-6 months or so… many of which are barely a year old yet, and still selling rather well. I mean, Assassin’s Creed 3 still sells new for $30, Far Cry 3 still sells new for $40, Need For Speed: Most Wanted still sells new for $30, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen still sells new for $40. That’s just FOUR of the many games EU/UK have gotten in the past few months, and they total in value to $140!? Even though I know it’s not the price-tag of the game, it’s the quality… it goes to show that the prices are still up on them, meaning they haven’t exactly bottomed out as far as attention/popularity go… yet, here in the US, we seemingly keep getting the games that nobody’s looking at, caring about, or really even remembering anymore. *shrugs*

  • what a ******* great update, yup. i HAD to say it like that, even if you don’t like one of those games you can’t really say they are bad

  • ROFL @ Villdoc

    Nice.

  • Great library of free titles next month. Unfortunately, I already own all of them. Hotline Miami was my most recent purchase.

  • Yes! Finally! i’m planning to get KoA:R this month but it’s worth the wait! :) FANTASTIC GAMES! i don’t own all of these games, so it’s really worth it! thanks for no PSP games for Vita..Let’s stay that way Ps Plus team! :D thanks for the early preview, hope it continues! #Awesome

  • @204: You said: “I’m willing to bet that nobody on this blog knows financial struggle more than I do.” — I can solidly, firmly, and most assurdly guarantee I know financial struggle much more than you do. Not to devalue your struggles at all… but had this same conversation with somebody on the forums yesterday… revealed most the tid-bits, while still leaving out some others… they also quieted up rather quickly when it came to “comparison”.

  • AWESOME update for Vita!! I am really looking forward to Hotline Miami and Sine Mora!

  • Ah yeah this is a superb line up glad i never bought any of these games. Its just awesome to be a PS Plus member it truly is. PS4 day 1 i’m out

  • Great set of games in that list, especially Hotline Miami. I already own them on PS3 and Vita, but it’s still cool that other people will get a chance to experience this one-of-a-kind game. And word on if/when the sequel, Wrong Number, will be coming to PSN?

  • wow! what an amazing month! i cant belive this, is so good! you guys read my mind! PS plus is the best deal for gaming. Thank you guys! making me a happy gamer since subscribed to PS plus.

  • @ Sevyne

I didn’t say I had a problem with anything you said there.

If I have something to say to you, I’ll address you by your name, as I did here.

Maybe get some help for that persecution complex. Just because I said something that burned your ears, does not necessarily mean it was aimed at you. And I can tell you right now that my comment about crybabies asking for handouts wasn’t aimed at you. Why did you feel that way? Are you guilty? I wouldn’t know. You don’t post enough for me to get a good read on you.

Also, beware of sticking your foot in your mouth.

I could easily say that your response to me was due to YOU being uncomfortable with MY OPINION, thus, you appear hypocritical when asking for understanding of your position when you do not extend the same understanding to me.

  • hotline miami is awesome on the vita…. unfortunally, there trophies that are not working well…. I got every single one of the trophies, except:

    *Karma : Die 1000 times
    *1989: kill 1989 enemies
    * Go to car : go to car 60 times

I got A+ in all of the chapters, got all the letters and everything in multiple playthroughs…. is not possible that I didn’t made those 3….. they’re broken =[

That made me very sad =[

only 3 trophies for the platinum =[

HEY! kingdom of amalur! was waiting so much for this game, since it went free at psn+EU

    nice one

  • @ Funky0ne

    If you say so, buddy.

I’m not trying to have a competition with anybody regarding who’s struggled the most… ha ha…

I won’t get into the most intimate details, as there simply isn’t enough room here nor the time to do it, but to summarize a little bit, I know in my heart that most people would have committed suicide if they had to endure the things I have. And if not suicide, then at least they would have gone insane. My financial struggles in the past were accompanied by some really grueling inner-turmoil-type stuff as well… I’m sure you can imagine the burden that comes from dealing with carrying such a persistent heavy load from multiple sources… that is, if you’re being straight with me about your struggles. But again, I’m not on the blog for this type of discussion. Perhaps I shouldn’t have opened that can of worms, so I shall drop it here.

It’s my day off. I’m going to go play a game or two. Peace.

  • Finally a month without PSP! Already own SoTC, but I’m looking forward to KoA and Hotline Miami.

Thank you very much, PS+ team!

  • @223 (PrimeIncognito) – You said: “I’m not trying to have a competition with anybody regarding who’s struggled the most”, bit of a contradiction to the slap in the face of, “I’m willing to bet that nobody on this blog knows financial struggle more than I do”.

To just give you a basic summary… my fiance and I both had decent jobs on the other side of the country (Florida) a few years ago… we both got laid off from them (different companies/careers) around the same time. The area we lived in was dried out for job openings, our house went into foreclosure, and we became homeless. We packed up what little we could in our car, drove all the way across the country (since we didn’t know anybody well enough around where we lived) to move into and live in a friend’s basement in northern California, where we’ve been struggling for the past 2-3 years. (Continued)

  • @223 (PrimeIncognito) – (Continution) Due to physical issues, my fiance isn’t able to work, and like most legal issues, the disability claim is taking forever. Parkinson’s runs through my family, and I’ve been showing symptoms for the past 5-10 years, but still have to struggle to do something, as I’m still capable. There was another roommate that took off while stealing a good amount of what we were able to save, including my original PS3 (with PS2 compatibility), PS Move, Sharpshooter, and most my games. Due to credit-checks and extra criteria, it’s hard to find steady employment, so I take and do whatever odd jobs I can come across which are starting to thin out themselves. Try to pay whatever rent I can, as it’s only fair, and I actually had to save a few dollars here and there for nearly a year before I just got my new PS3 a few months ago (been a gamer since the age of 5, it’s like an addiction, but at least helps keep my mind off of how much life sucks). If not for food stamps we’d struggle to eat regularly. There’s other family-related issues, and other tid-bits that come into play, but that’s the basics to sum it up in a nutshell. O_O

  • Great variety this month! Thanks for finally giving us an RPG. I’ll also love to see a SRPG for Vita at some point, but I like this month’s selection a lot. Thanks!

  • @223 – (PrimeIncognito) – At least you have a steady job to have a “day off” from… be thankful for that. Cheers and peace to you. o_O

  • Well, see? PSP in IGC will never give any reason for PS+ members without a Vita to own one.

  • For everyone else i’m sure this is a sweet update ,but i bought Kingdoms when it came to PSN & i bought Shadow when i switched from disc to digital. Last update didn’t really do much for me other than Resident Evil since i already owned was in the update ,and the same thing again this time. The only thing i don’t have from this update already is Sine Mora ,and Poker Night.

Which brings me to something thats annoying me with the plus service. Why is it one month a game(s) are offered at a deep discount with plus then a month ,or so later the same game is offered for free.

There are games that NEVER get a discount on the store that would be perfect for plus. Max & The Magic Marker, Siren: Blood Curse (come on 39.99 for a game that was released in 2008?).

Dont get me wrong i love the service as my digital collection has grown leaps & bounds with this service ,and ive played/enjoyed games from it that i would never normally bought.

But, its making me wonder if i should even buy stuff that gets PS Plus discounts because the trend seems to be that in the next month (or 3 months in the worst case) the game will end up free on the service.

  • Wooooow!!! NICE UP!! Thanks playstation :D

  • err, i mean the supportive PS+ to its hardware sales. Better promotion, right?

  • Kingdom of Alamur !!! :D

  • Not bad, kinda better than last month. lol I just wished Sine Mora is also for the PS3, I don’t own a vita yet.

  • And I also hope this month’s deals and discounts are good as well.

  • No Fighters! Thanks!

Thanks for not having any fighters. We’ve already got a lifetime supply from previous months. It’s a respectable collection this month; I’m looking forward to Sine Mora and Amalur.

Are the Vita long-term games being updated next month? I think it’s been nearly a year for them and the titles are very stale. I’m hoping for some top notch full length Vita games, not just the shorter (but usually good) indie or older PSP titles. I’d also like it if the new games aren’t “M” rated, so my kids can play them. LBP Vita or Sly Cooper would be great!

  • Amazing month! Makes up for last month!

  • Can you guys start adding AAA titles for the free games. No games have intrested me from ps+ since hitman. Also can we stop with the ps2 games? I know you guys can get AAA titles to since Europe does. Tons of people talk about Europe having better titles but with good reason especially recently.

  • Hate it when you guys put something on sale and then put it in the ITGC a short time later ( SOTC). I wouldn’t hate it so much if the NA games were as good as the European games.

  • WHY SONY WHY?!?! Why does Europe have a MUCH stronger lineup than in North America. They get ASSASSINS CREED III and FAR CRY 3 and we just get a poker game? Please Playstation Team, respond and tell us why.

  • What a great month!

  • Hotline Miami. F’ing sweet.

  • @PrimeroIncognito You had a post directly before mine and then one immediately after mine, so unless you were just spam posting then one would think you were talking to the previous poster. Though as always you resort to childish insults instead of real responses. Not really all that surprised. Would a simple, “I was speaking in general, not directly to you” not have sufficed? Guess not. By the way, don’t bother responding with some snarky comment because I’m done humoring you. I’m better than that.

  • Awesome selection this month.

  • I was just about to buy Poker night on steam too! Thanks for the update guys.

  • I already own SotC, and the others don’t interest me (except maybe Hotline Miami), but KoA by itself makes this month awesome! Now all I need is Okami HD at some point, and my wishlist will be finished!

  • Wow great month

  • What about the PlayStation 3 version of Rayman Origins?
We got the VITA version but I want the PlayStation 3 one! :)

  • thats just great, europe gets far cry 3 and we get those games
