  • An incredible amount of facepalms. The PS4 can’t read CDs? Really? They’re not dead yet and they probably won’t be completely gone for another 10 years.

However, the biggest HAS to be the “sub-account-to-master account” decline. Are you kidding me? This has got to be a joke. After seven years of complaining from a large number within the community, Sony’s response is basically “just make a new one”? What a way to treat customers in something you don’t inform them is permanent. I’d even prefer a small fee to upgrade my account from sub to master over creating a new one. I’m starting to believe the account system is fragile (if not flawed) and that’s why it’s set-up is so rigid.

  • I’d just like to chime in that I’m pretty disappointed about the lack of MP3 and media streaming support, I don’t use CD’s but I’m sure that’s a bummer to plenty of people also so I hope this gets turned around. I don’t want to use Music Unlimited either :/ . Plus theirs not even any streaming music alternatives like Spotify or Rdio.

  • Are you guys removing mp3 support just to force people to subscribe to that crappy Music Unlimited service? If so, thats pretty cold.

  • @+ jgrizzle358:
You don’t think the Sony dev team considered how angry people would get if they were told they’d have to spend $60 if they want to listen to any music on their PS4?!

Of course they considered it. Probably right up until they finalized the Day One Patch.
They said screw it. We want more money and continued with their decision to cut out our ability to listen to free music.

This will no doubt give PS4 hackers yet another reason to hack the system ASAP.
Hackers don’t like it when companies restrict common and expected features.

This is bad news for honest gamers who just want what we have come to expect on a gaming console.

  • Just thought of another thing…so you guys basically have a variation of the Xbox “always on” policy…In order for me to listen to music I have to be long into the internet and buy into music unlimited, PS+ or whatever….very very disappointed. I don’t even log in often, but I had to make my position heard.

In addition, what about playback of Photos? I didn’t see anything in there about being able to view pictures? So no more photo slideshows with music playback?

  • Very disappointed in lack of mp3. and dlna support. I hope this is fixed in the future. Don’t try to force music unlimited down our throats. Wont end well for anyone. These small things being omitted make up a large part of my home entertainment that includes my entire family. I’m a loyal customer don’t take that for granted

  • Agh! Very disappointed that DLNA and MP3 playback is no longer supported! Those are one of my most used features on my PS3. Please add it back through a future firmware update.

  • @799

I suspect that the day-one update to play DVD/BD video discs is actually a license to unlock that function. It is a form of DRM. In that regard, when you update the software, you will have to click-through a EULA which, undoubtedly, will expressly grant SCE/SEN permission to revoke the license at any time, at their discretion.

In other words, purchasing a PS4 does include Blu-ray hardware, but you will still need to license video playback functionality. Basically, you’re only buying half a Blu-ray player and then borrowing the other half from Sony.

At some future point, Sony could suspend all DVD/BD video playback on the PS4, thus imposing Video Unlimited as the only video option. Just like Music Unlimited is the only music option at launch. Shameful.

  • Wow, this post sure has blown up.
My 2 cents, Music playback on my Ps3 was a limited if not useless feature for me, I stream music from my laptop to my Denon Amp, so yeh, I wont miss that.

Hey gamer’s remember the Ps4 is a “GAMING MACHINE ” 1st and foremost. Pictures, Music, Browser, are all nice bonuses, but do you really think that Sony will continue to include these “limited use” features into their consoles ?

It’s all about cost and use of features, so my guess is, this feature was not used much ” Not by many Developers ” anyway. That’s the most important stat here. So yeh, Sony yanked it.

But with all this backlash that this post is getting, I think Sony will address this with a day 1 patch……
    Anyway, as always,

    Keep on Gaming.

  • You guys really REALLY need to address the mp3 and DNLA problem ASAP, at launch if possible, because you are going to lose a lot of sales if you don’t do it

  • This far exceeds anything that Microsoft wanted to do and I fear not enough people care enough to let Sony know how they feel.

What’s next? The removal of Netflix. Actually to be clear, they haven’t even commented on weather we will get a Netflix app or not.

If we didn’t put up much of a fuss about the whole music thing then they might as well take away the competition apps and have us buy movies and TV shows from VIDEO UNLIMITED.

I don’t like the new Sony. It’s way too much like the old Microsoft.

  • @799 they had a deadline to put to the system’s OS, in order to meat the deadline they had to put some features in a patch, also, they’re trying to cut back on piracy.

some of you don’t know how business work.

  • My question has not answer yet…
Can I change my account region on PS4 like i did with xbox360?
I’m tired to pay with Euros when i can pay with $ and save a lot of money only because my original account is european and, obviously, I don’t want loose my games library, reputation and trophies

  • and geez. No native bluetooth headset compatibility? They are “incompatible.” Really, why is that? Bluetooth 2.1 EDR is supported right? Are you guys really going down the monetize everything route? We will have to buy only Sony branded bluetooth headsets?

  • 800+ comments, many of which are angry people and Sony gives us a casual..
    “We’ll look into it.”

They won’t do a thing about it unfortunately. We are losing are basic video game console rights one by one
and being told about it AFTER laying down our money.

  • ah, i forgot, I want change my account region because I don’t live anymore in Europe

  • What about photos??

One of my favourite things about the PS3 was the built-in photo viewer.
I take many burst shots with my camera (many shots at once) to ensure I always get at least one good image, but then I have to go through all my photos and pick out the best one. The PS3 made it so much easier for me to do that than even a PC – especially because I can easily spot minor differences in my images on a big HD TV as opposed to a smaller computer screen.

Please let us know about the photos viewer!!

  • @812 DVD/BD video playback is not exactly cutting edge stuff anymore, and it could have resided entirely in the hardware layer. By requiring a patch to unlock basic video playback, Sony is attempting to co-opt user expectation of the first-sale doctrine (that if you buy a Blu-ray player, it will…you know…actually play Blu-ray discs out of the box) by getting the user to agree to a diminution of his/her rights when he/she clicks through a EULA to install the patch.

  • @812 That is how business works.

  • @809: I don’t think it’s accurate to claim it is solely a “gaming machine” these days. It’s clear they have been aiming for a broader “Entertainment System” way for the PlayStation series. It’s just a shame they are not working to keep the consumer happy which is a big part of being entertained.

@815: Exactly, it’s upsetting as a loyal PlayStation fan. Everything about the way they are handling things is just so anti-consumer, you can just tell they don’t care about us or what we want. The only way they’ll care is if there is financial danger and there will clearly not be, the hype is too high.

  • Very good FAQ sheet, two things bother me about the ps4 tho…

1st, You need to give us the ability to change our online ID even if you charge a little something.

2nd There is no music vizualizer for the ps4, that really sucks, you should put people on that very soon.

  • In regards to upgrading the hard drive, What’s the capacity of the largest hard drive supported in the PS4?

  • No MP3 playback?!

An obvious push toward the Music Unlimited paywall…

  • Question: Will I be able to preload digitally purchased games a few days before launch?

    Thanks!

    Are you serious…

    Anyway…

    @ EVERYBODY

You are not being forced to buy Music Unlimited. Just mute the TV and use your stereo if you want to hear different music while gaming. Always works for me.

Or you can just listen to the in-game music…

Is it really that bad to not have custom soundtracks? No really, I’m actually curious. Because it’s a feature I RARELY ever used on PS3… maybe once or twice in 6 years. Are you really going to cancel your pre-orders over that one feature that has nothing to do with playing games?

  • @ 825 There are several missing features that folks seem unhappy about.

  • Will I ever be able to buy last gen games like the last of us and the older kill zone games, and play them on ps4?

  • @827 There is really no way that the PS4 will be able to emulate the Cell architecture sufficient to play those games. Hopefully, Sony will be smart enough to adhere to relatively common hardware standards going forward, so that PS4 games may possibly be able to play on a PS5, in theory.

However, I would not be surprised if Santa Monica has an x86-optimized version of The Last of Us waiting in the wings. It’s a new game, and Naughty Dog surely had the specs on the PS4 during development. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that title reissued at some point. I also wouldn’t discount the possibility of PS4 versions of say, the God of War series or Uncharted series–the really big first party games being re-released.

  • @823 yes. Its kinda of disgusting the more i think about it. Especially since Music Unlimited probably won’t have music i have like j-rock.

  • Will PS4 have a poker game like High stakes on the Vegas Strip Poker edition available??

  • My main complaint is not being able to digitally purchase and play ps3/ps2/ps1 games thru PSN and being able to play them on your PS4…Im by no means buying a PS4 to play old games but it would be cool if one day u want to revisit a old classic and buy it digitally and being able to play it on your PS4… I understand not ebing able to play them thru inserting the older disc into the PS4 but not digitally being able to play them either? makes no sense…Sony, your losing money doing that. Please change this because they’re customers like myself who sold their PS3s as soon as a PS4 release date was announced with the notion being I would be able to play all the games I’ll miss out on the PS3 on the PS4 digitally.

  • Hello i had high hopes for ps4 everything going good, now i’m very let down by the fact you can’t use audio cd/mp3, external hdd, and DLNA servers? wow just wow, i think im going to pass on getting a new system all together. if this is not addressed by launch time i will not be getting a ps4.

  • Wait, what happened to War Thunder?

  • My family relies on my PS3’s ability to display all our family JPG photos from my desktop PC via DLNA. The lack of this feature for PS4 is a big shock, and leaves me with a dilemma. Should I stick with my PS3 and wait a year or so to purchase a PS4, once (and if) this feature is implemented? Frankly, sharing gameplay videos via Facebook ain’t my cup of tea.

  • Oh my god, so many people are upset that these feature aren’t going to be on PS4, ever most of your won’t buy the system now. For those who cancelled there PS4 and switch to Xbox One then leave. for those who still want an PS4 then kept support Sony

  • not being able to digitally play PS1-PS3 games on your PS4 through PSN purchase on your PS4? makes no sense… do u know how many people put off buying the new PS3 games thinking they’d just digitally buy them and play them on PS4 later on? and if you guys do some how fix this at least make it possible to be able to connect with the ps3 survers while playing ps3 games on your ps4…but please fix this

  • I think Sony wants the focus of PS4 to be more on games than the other stuff…

You probably have a handful of other devices for the other stuff anyway, right?

I really don’t see the missing features as being a deal-breaker, honestly. I rarely used custom soundtracks and media server connectivity, and most gamers were probably the same way. Once again (as with Plus haters), I think the complaints are making the most noise, but they don’t really represent the majority of the consumer base.

We buy these consoles to GAME, right?

AND… don’t overlook the possibility of these features being patched in down the road. You guys are freakin out for no reason. Relax. Wait until they actually say, “NO! We will NEVER include these features so deal with it!” before you start jumping ship to Microsoft.

  • Will Playstation Home be on PS4?

  • I cant believe it , no mp3, no USB Hard drive, why sony ? WHY ?

It’s not about if i can listen music on my laptop or my stereo, the thing is you actually can do this on your ps3 , i see no problem keeping this feature , i feel so disappointed i always thought sony really listen to what people wants, i understand the subscription to play online, but cant understand why no mp3 arghhhhh, no media servers just to force us to buy the music unlimited SHAME ON YOU , SHAME ON YOU SONY , PEOPLE THE SAME WAY THE OTHER CONSOLE COMPANY CHANGED THEIR WAY TO DO BUSINESS NOW WE MUST FORCE SONY TO CHANGE ABOUT PS4 >:(

    PS4 COULD BE PERFECT!

  • Will the PS4 be able to use SATA III speeds, or is it limited to only SATA II speeds this gen? I know the ps3 could only use SATA I speeds last gen.

  • Dear Sony,

I have the money in an envelope, (hidden within my last of us case) I have my white vita all decked out and waiting. I have my $50 deposit presell at futureshop from june and a 2 min walk to the store from my apartment. I have glimpsed my first ps4 game at walmart today smiling down at me in the form of 3 copies of knack. I have patiently waited for fifa 14 next gen with a presell ready to go and i have carefully read through your faq. I am getting ready to buy a 46″ led bravia and moving my 40″ led to the bed room with the ps3.

then i come onto the blog and have to say that I am feeling disapointed.

first i looked at your rewards program. Not available in Canada. So my money is no good to your bottom line because i’m canadian??? irritating.

  • @Sponge-worthy And you were surprised to see that happening? Like you said, that’s only because it’s been out for seven years. Features get patch over time. Won’t be surprised if PS4 gets that same treatment too.

And they did promise us something called “Gaikai.” It won’t be available at launch, but I hope to see it in the future hopefully being free. Maybe The Last of Us will be able to be streamed.

@jwhyrock You’re right, that isn’t your problem. In fact, they don’t care whether you give them money or not. If you don’t want to buy a PS4, fine. That choice is entirely up to you. They don’t need “your” money to stay alive. Money belongs to you and you can spend it however you want it. They require everyone’s participation to contribute with their business so they can make enough systems for everyone. Just don’t pre-order and cancel it a few days later, causing Sony to lose money. They might not have enough to patch the features because they’ll think it’s not worth it.

  • then this faq. NO AUDIO CD. then i have to read for over an hour to see what your really pulling. NO MP3.

    no DLNA

no support for my $180 te2 fightstick
no support for my $250 turtle beach px5’s

background soundtrack with music unlimited. Which took forever to be available in Canada and now requires a credit card even with a 1 year sub. I was going to sign up for the $43 year deal with plus, but cc required.

    that’s horse s h i t

you had better make some sort of announcement as to why your doing this.

and btw contrast for drive club is weak.

i’m dissapointed. my birthday and christmas gift from my wife was allowing me to get a ps4 and you put a taint on it. no custom soundttrack on fifa sucks.

  • @ Motorokill99

Yes, I understand the annoyance with features you’ve grown accustomed to suddenly vanishing from your fingertips, I understand.

But, are there not ways around it? I think there is. And, like I said, these features may be patched in down the road. Did you really expect the PS4 to be fully-stocked and finalized at launch? C’mon, you know how things work nowadays in technology… release it now, patch it later…

  • Will I be able to use a new PSN ID with out making a new account or using my real name?

  • Hey looky here! Why, I just fixed your FAQ for you. You’re welcome :D :D :D

Will I be able to play background music while I play PS4 games?
Yes, the Music Unlimited streaming service will allow you to listen to music while you play PS4 games. A subscription to Music Unlimited is required. Options for your using your own song library will be added in using a post-launch patch.

Does PS4 include a music visualizer feature?
    No, not on launch day.

Will I be able to play MP3s on PS4?
    No, not on launch day.

  • the fact you cannot give people a name change on their account for a generation change is crass, let alone the fact i could change my userid on the original XBOX, they have allowed it since 2003, for a fee, same with 360, the fact i can’t change it on generation change, ie 7 years later, and don’t allow even to pay is a joke. maybe i am tired of my userid, this business with kids becoming adults having to lose everything is an admission of failure.

it’s hard to defend you when you make bad business decisions. the headset and fightstick i can get over the userid, the music, dlna, no youtube, what makes you think anyone wants to upload video to facebook?

i’m still getting it, for the promise of games to come, i really hope remote play is decent, as for killzone and knack it’s a weak launch. nintendo is offering better first party this holiday. i hope enough people complain and boycott that you patch my ps4 for audio.

  • This really disappoints me Sony! I was so excited to purchase a PS4 but after reading through this I don’t know if I want to anymore. The things that really bug me the most is the fact that it is NOT backwards compatible with the PS3 as most of my gaming collection is digital with 7 physical disc based games. I also don’t like the fact that we are unable to play CD’s and Mp3’s! What is this nonsense? Yes, it is an upgrade in some areas but a downgrade in some areas as well. This FAQ just crushed my dreams of possibly owning this system anytime soon.

  • Could be PS4 console be primary for 2 or more accounts? E.g. someone has account in EU store, but he moves to US and having account there. It’s better to him buy games in US account, but all his achivements are on EU account – could he play games, that he bought on US account from his EU account?

  • Does the PS4 have a SATA III (6GB/s) hard drive interface? Please let us know because a lot of people are looking to upgrade to SSD’s immediately. Thank you!
