  • Gotta say, I’m disappointed by the remote play stuff as well as the inability to play our own music or use external HDDs. how can it be so user friendly is some ways and so unfriendly in other ways? I hope patches correct these issues

  • I’m not sure if you’ll get this far into the comments to see my question, but here goes anyway:

I see that the PS3 Bluray remote is not supported, but will other bluetooth remote controls be supported? I have a Logitech Harmony remote, with a bluetooth adaptor for PS3, which is my DVD/Blu-ray player as well as my game console.

Will the PS4 be able to work with such bluetooth devices for this purpose?

Thanks if you can answer my question. There isn’t much information available from Logitech at this time.

  • No DLNA or MP3 support? Will buy an Xbox.

  • Now that everything is down on paper, the PS4 sounds like a huge step back compared to the PS3.
    Seriously ? 3.5MM headset?

  • All right. I’ve thought about it and realized I have never used my PS3 for mp3’s, so I’m fine with that. I used to use the DLNA for streaming videos, but it was so problematic I stopped. So I’m not making those deal breakers. I do want to know if it can play video files though. The problem I’m having with the mp3 reveal is that it’s something I always took for granted and it turns out to not work. Now I’m questioning everything that isn’t explicitly mentioned. I take for granted that I’ll be able to watch my videos on it, but now I’m not so sure.

  • Wow guys, its just Launch day. They may improve/add features as the months go by. I know its a huge let down that there won’t be any DLNA or MP3 support, but that still doesnt make the console useless. They primarily designed the system as a GAMING device. Most people of Desktop computers dedicated to media streaming, or people are going to keep their PS3’s. I for one will be keeping my PS3. For me the biggest features would have to be video play back. That’s all. I’ll use my PS3 for everything else if need be. So just chill out guys. It’s not the end of the freaking world.

  • I don’t care about the streaming but I do care for connecting my USB external drives to watch movies and music. One thing that does get me is that fact that it will not support PS3 game saves. Depending on what happens in the next month or so will determine if I will be getting a ps4 or X-One. SONY sorry to day your digging your own grave.

  • It won’t support PS3 saves because currently there isn’t a way to play PS3 games on the PS4. We have to wait till the release more info on the streaming service through GaiKai.

  • ha, I’m getting a PS4, but looking at the underwhelming launch titles lead me to pick up a God of War bundle on sale!

I’ll stick with the PS3 till the games run dry, by then all the bugs will be ironed out AND hopefully MP3 support will be added…

I’ve waited since launch of the PS3 for a universal way to listing to music while gaming, Sony gave us the option…. unfortunately that option is a crappy service behind a pay wall.

    oh ya, one more thing….

I had MP3’s once, then I took an arrow to the knee!

  • Lol. I’m still getting a PS4 as well. I support Sony in what they’re doing. Yea there were setbacks with the PS3, but it was and still is a great gaming system. Xbox has its benefits too but for me the PS3 was the clear winner. As far as the PS4 goes, I can’t wait to get my hands on Killzone Shadowfall and test the system out on a 4K tv ( once i order the TV of course lol) People just need to stop finding reasons to complain about features that they probably won’t use as much because they’ll be too busy playing games.

That’s what happened to me. I have MP3’s on my ps3 that I dont even listen to. But hey, to each their own right?

  • People expect all a PS3 is plus more. Anything less is unacceptable!
Thats why the majority of people are upset. And by the way consumer are allowed to be upset.

  • NO CD / MP3 / DNLA is a deal breaker!! I know ALOT of people who use this functionality…..

    This is TERRIBLE news !!!!!

  • Not able to play media off my media servers??? You must be kidding?! I guess I will stick to my PS3 for a long time then AND take a serious look at the XBox.

  • I seriously use my PS3 for streaming from my media server more than I use it to play video games!!!!! It is the center of my home theatre. Until these features come back in the PS4 I will not be getting one.

Yes I am aware the PS3 had thee features added by an update but to not include them in basically what is a computer is really dumb. Good job Sony!!!

  • Backwards Compatibility please. I know you have a workaround for DLing games to the hard drive and verifying a PS3 disc in the tray. BC makes the transition between systems a whole lot smoother, and expands the games library at launch. Isn’t this why you purchased Gakai?

I hope this is at least implimented on future PS3 releases such as FFX HD & Lightning Returns so that I don’t need to go back to the PS3 for new releases.

  • I’m a long time Playstation enthusiast and fan. I bought a PS3 on launch day (and still play it regularly, just beat Arkham Origins last night!), subscribed to PS+ almost as soon as the IGC was implemented, and played PS2 since Christmas of the launch year. I’ma big fan, and I was looking forward to saving up and buying a PS4 early next year with my tax refund.

Unfortunately, I learned today that the PS4 will not be supporting DLNA or MP3 streaming. And that, frankly, is inexcusable. Even when I wasn’t interested in the newest games, I could always count on my PS3 being the ultimate entertainment hub of my house. DLNA allowed me to keep my entire music and movie collection accessible, not just whatever Sony titles were available at the moment through some cloud service. Everything, from every studio or publisher, that I had ever collected. Surely the fine folks at Sony own numerous favorite films and albums from across the entertainment landscape, as opposed to just Sony’s newest releases?

I will be carefully considering whether or not the PS4 will be meeting my expectations as a home entertainment hub in light of this unfortunate news, unless and until full DLNA compatibility is restored to the PS4 feature set.

  • To all you people thinking they may add support down the line for External hard drives, CD/MP3 playback capability, and DLNA support, consider the track record on the PS3. Striping it of features was the common theme.

    -Backwards compatibility got axed
-the Install other OS got axed
    -2 USB ports got removed
    -Memory cards got removed
    -SACD playback got axed

I sure hope that add External drive and storage support along with DLNA and MP3 playback. STOP BEING GREEDY!

The slogan “IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING™” doesn’t apply to the PS4 to say the least.

  • Honestly, it really sucks that the PS4 cant play music cds, MP3s , no external HDD support. PS3 had these features, I don’t see why the PS4 can’t have them

  • @1017 Codee, nor does the term “Greatness Awaits” as it’s not quite so great anymore :-/

  • No audio CDs. No ripping. No MP3s.

    Preorder cancelled.

DEAR MR SONY. I HAVE NO USE FOR A MEDIA DEVICE THAT CANNOT PLAY MY MUSIC.

I will not be purchasing a PS4 until it supports Audio CD and MP3. You have got this wrong.

  • I use the PS3 Media Server support with Playon. Not having this option in the PS4 is really disappointing. As for CD Music and MP3 playback is also disappointing.

I feel that removing these features are a HUGE slap in the face to ALL Sony device owners.

I have supported Sony for many years (since the late 80s), and Playstation (when I played Thrill Kill at 1998 E3). Ever since then I bought/supportet all playstation brands:

    1 – Playstation (1998)
    1 – Playstation 2 (2000)
2 – Playstation 3 (release version 60gig Fat and Slim)
    4 – PSPs
    1 – Vita (3g release model) FYI – Never partnet with AT&T.

I also purchase the EyeToy and Eve cameras, both PS3 bluetooth headsets, and Move controllers. I could go on and on about all the Sony products I have purchased throughout the years, but this comment section would break. Sony has enough negative press already.

    Sony,

The momentum of the PS4 is very good, but you are deflating the tires before the race has begun. Please do not be stupid, support all the functionality of the previous playstations or do not call it “Playstation 4”. Call is Playstation Limited or Sony Only or Playstation One.

    Concerned Consumer

  • If I want to use crap apps like skype and **** like that I have a windows and mac pc for that, don’t need my gaming system to do that specially on my tv. Yea, because I’m going to have a private convo via skype or be on my personal account of f/b or whatever in front of all in the living room… who thought of that i a complete idiot.

IF the ps4 is a gaming system ONLY then take that social crap off, otherwise put back the media stuff like media servers, audio cds, mp3′s, etc.

Why on earth would a bluray reader need to activate reading dvd/bluray movies!? Does this makes sense at all to you!?

You need to stop soming that crap, its eating your brain (what’s left of it) sony.

Now if only at least 75% of the pre-orders were cancelled… that would gold over blue.

  • Can I use my standard-definition TV with PS4?
The resolution of PS4’s HDMI output changes automatically depending on the TV or monitor connected. Of course, PS4 has been designed to deliver games with rich, high-fidelity graphics that are best enjoyed on HD TVs.

This doesn’t answer the question. Will ps4 work with standard-definition TV?

  • I was know the Sony was making or are making a new Media, HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) . This media won’t be put in the PS4 ?

  • The lack of DLNA (Media Server) is a huge buying factor for me. But looks like Shuhei is listening..lets hope!

    Shuhei Yoshida ‏@yosp 6h

Had a very good discussion w the PS4 Dev team today. We’re happy & appreciative to learn so many people use and like PS3’s media features.

  • I have a question regarding the ps 4 camera. I have a projection system setup for gaming, and since the ps4 camera is using a proprietary connection will they be releasing extension cords for this to sit under my screen?

  • @ 1022 Someone can afford a $399.99 PS4 console, but can’t afford HDTV and is still playing on SDTV? That’s madness…

Seriously though, better put back .mp3 and DLNA support real fast SONY…

  • Thank you Sony for releasing the PS4 FAQ but I’m very disappointed along with everyone else here that PS4 won’t support CD playback, MP3 and DNLA support and external hard drives. Please release another patch post PS4 launch to include these features because right now it seem like IT DOESN’T DO EVERYTHING

    FIX THIS SONY!

  • @1022 No its doesn’t support Standard Definition TVs only HD TVs with HDMI ports.

  • @1022

No because SDTV do not have HDMI inputs. So no go for old Tv without HDMI inputs.. It is HDMI or nothing and the Xbox One is the same way too…

  • Since the PS4 does not support external hard drives, will everything have to be redownloaded and installed if I upgraded to a new larger hard drive? Or will it still work like the PS3 does and support the backup & transfer to an external hard drive to be copied back over to the new hard drive after installation?
It is a really dumb idea if you are asking people who fill up a 500 GB hard drive to have to download that 500 GB off of PSN or discs again when using an external HDD would be 10+ times faster probably. I understand not supporting the external HDD to install and play games to, but it should be supported for backup purposes.

  • Sony, when will we hear more about the Gaikai service? Also, will we be able to insert a PSone, PS2 and PS3 discs in to the PS4 to be used as proof of ownership and stream the game as long as the disc is inserted? I really want to know more about the Gaikai service.

I really would like to play PSone, PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles on the PS4.

  • The lack of mp3 support makes no sense. I don’t understand. Why would you strip features from the PS3? mp3 playback is supported on everything – even smartwatches! and you mean to tell me that a Home Entertainment / Gaming Console with a life-cycle of 5-8 years does not? Stupidity.

I want MP3 playback and background playback in-game. I wanted it on the PS3, too. Waited patiently for it on the PS4. The lack of Audio CD playback is mindblowing too, considering even the PS1 had this capability. Although, physical format is being replaced by digital, I can understand its removal… But as I said, its being REPLACED by digital… Sony has stripped both. At VERY least the Playstation 4 should play Music and Video – quite frankly, in all the formats the PS3 was able to… It only makes sense

I really hope you (Sony) add this into the day one update. Its not even a difficult change to make.

  • What a train wreck… over 1,000 comments mostly upset over the limited and restricted use of the PS4 two weeks before launch and this blog has only 6 replies from the moderator. To top it off the PS Plus content for November isn’t even realesed yet and it’s the last day of October… you really don’t know how to communicate very well sony… I mean you would think you would want to get ahead of things rather than behind… guess that’s why the stock is down over 10% today…

Get right, listen to your customers. Isn’t there a saying: the customer is always right. It’s never been so true.

  • Playstation “Limited” Edtition – Ultimate FRAQ :( Why “Ultimate” when it’s clearly not.

  • No media capabilities?? Might be time to finally switch to Xbox.

  • The problem with cutting DLNA and MP3 support is that it runs counter to Playstation’s message/vision. They made a big deal about ‘ownership’ when it comes to games, but when it comes to music we have to climb the pay wall of an exclusive service that is ‘always-online’.

  • Playstation History:

Playstation 1 plays games and supports CDs.

Playstation 2 supports playstation 1 functionality and games as well as play PS2 games and DVDs.

Playstation 3 supports Playstation 2 functionality and both PS1 and PS2 games as well as play PS3 games, and Bluray.

What we knew on April 20th 2013 was that Playstation 4 would not have any backwards “game” compatibility.

What we learned on October 30th 2013 was that Playstation 4 would not have any backwards “any playstation functionality” compatibility.

side note: PS Vita plays MP3s.

Was $ony bought out by Micro$oft? I’m confused.

  • Is it me or has the launch lineup gotten significantly smaller? What happened to War Thunder? Blacklight: Retribution? Minecraft? Then again it does say that the list will be updated, so that’s hopeful.

  • Will it be possible to use your PS Vita as an additional controller for the PS4?

Seeing as we have Remote Play already? I don’t see any reason why we can’t use as a controller when the PS4 is not in remote play.

In addition, will deep Down be coming to the North american Regions?

  • Cutting CD/MP3 playback and/or storage, while not a huge blow does reek of the same old Sony proprietary only nonsense they have been forcing down our throats for years. What good is the feature to be able to listen to music while playing games when the only music the console supports comes from the music unlimited app which is owned by Sony.

I bet Sony San Diego is non-too-pleased with the removal, as one of the best features on their great franchise, MLB the Show, called “Sounds of the Show,” relied on players importing custom songs/sounds they had stored on their hard drives. Without CD/MP3, they’re going to have to scrap that feature which was one of the best custom features in all of sports videogaming!! What a drag . . .

  • Why was bluetooth omitted from the PS4?!

  • Wow Sony, after all the trash talk at e3 who knew the pot was calling the kettle black;shame. I really wanted to get a 4 but why bother my 3 seems to do more. This is what next gen looks like. Please change your slogan to ‘Greatness Waits’ on being great. Sony you came out strong only to give it all back to Microsoft. Extremely disappointed.

  • I am dispointed of this that ps4 can’t play mp3 file and video files I love ps3 how I could play any type of videos and mp3s files but if PS4 won’t come with these feature there is no way I will buy a new ps4 I will stick to ps3 unless is just temporary and it will avaliabel soon to everyone.

  • Wow, this crazy: no audio cds, no mp3s, no dlna?

  • Way to put the ball back in Microsoft’s court Sony. No DLNA!?!, No MP3 or CD’s!?! How do horrendous decisions like this happen? My PS3 has been my media hub for the past several years and you know why? BECAUSE IT PLAYED ALL MY MEDIA. At first my choice of PS4 over XBOX ONE seemed like a no-brainer. With all the restrictions that MS planned for their next console, Sony appeared to be much more in tune to what their customer base wanted. But as it stands now, since MS loosened the chains followed by Sony dropping these PS4 limitations bombshell (as well as majorly dropping the ball) the XBOX ONE is looking more and more like the next gen media hub most suited for my home theater.

    Terrible Sony, just terrible.

  • The true question is:Will players on PS4 be able to see their friends who are playing on PS3 and Vita “ONLINE” and the game they’re playing?

  • Everyone is upset at the lack of MP3 and DLNA. I am more upset with the lack of backwards compatibility with PSone, PS2 and PS3 titles. I really wish Sony can find a way to make the PS4 backwards compatible. :(

  • I’m very upset with Sony for not permitting the PS4 to support audio CDs and MP3s!!!!

I believe that Sony is trying to force PS4 owners into paying for a Music Unlimited subscription by adopting this position. I happen to currently have a Music Unlimited subscription only because it was offered at a very low price for a limited time last year. However, now I’m going to contact Sony and ask them to cancel my Music Unlimited subscription because I want to protest this recent revelation about the PS4’s lack of support for audio CDs & MP3s.

PLEASE JOIN ME IN MY BOYCOTT OF SONY’S MUSIC UNLIMITED SERVICE BY TAKING THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
    1) IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A MUSIC UNLIMITED SUBSCRIPTION – CANCEL IT ASAP & TELL SONY WHY YOU’RE TAKING THIS ACTION.
    2) IF YOU DON’T HAVE A MUSIC UNLIMITED SUBSCRIPTION – DON’T PURCHASE ONE & TELL SONY THAT YOU REFUSE TO EVER PURCHASE ONE UNTIL SONY REVERSES IT’S PROHIBITION OF AUDIO CDs & MP3s ON THE PS4.

  • I would also like to know if the PlayStation camera will have an extension cable? My TV and my PS4 will about 15 ft away from each other.
