PS4 System Software Update 1.51 Coming Soon

Later today, the next system software update for PlayStation 4 (version 1.51) will be available. With this minor required update, stability of system software has been improved. In addition, minor refinements to elements of the system UI (such as clearly indicating when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time) have been introduced.

In the North American region, automatic downloads for system and game updates are enabled by default when PS4 is in stand-by mode. Once system software update 1.51 is available later tonight, your PS4 will automatically download it, enabling you to update quickly and easily.

  • I’d like to see an option to save my PSN password so I don’t have to always put it in when I sign on, similar to the way the PS3 does it. I prefer not to automatically sign in to PSN everytime my console is turned on. But when I do sign on I like it to be quick and smooth, like on PS3 all it takes is two button presses, if your password is saved, to sign on to the PSN.

    Your comment:

“, play our own music, which you claimed was a feature in ps4 off the bat ”

Yes Sony did say that, but only via Music Unlimited currently.

You can add your private library in Music Unlimited and play that in the background and it works very well as I’ve used it a lot.

Sony stated they would look at bring streaming and cd/mp3 support at a later date and update.

    Hope that helps.

  • That feature is added with this patch…

  • @150 – gatormatt

There is an option to set for Automatic sign on on the PS4, as well as Face recognition.

Go to Settings and take a look at the options there.

As well, Sony has a PS4 manual online that will tell you how and where to look.

  • My 1.51 update went well, as I see another person commenting that theirs hasn’t.

    Took about 4-5 mins.

  • GGCAN

Yes I know. But I don’t like to have automatic sign on when I turn my console on.

  • @156 – gatormatt

You can take the checkmark off automatic sign on and it will prompt you for your password then.

You have the option for auto or no auto there.

  • First and foremost, thank you so much for building such a beautiful piece of hardware. Secondly, I understand we all have deadlines to make so the lack of features are completely understandable. But there are some things we can’t ignore… I’d like to list you some of the obvious ones that I have discovered are lacking that need attention promptly:

    – Custom themes.

    – YouTube app.

    – Pausing downloads.

    – Friend notifications!

    – Top/favorite friends list.

    – Detailed status’: what consoles are my friends playing?

    – PS3 to PS4 and vice versa messaging isn’t 100%, as I’ve read.

    – Online status: why can’t I go “away” or hide as if I’m “offline”? This is a big deal!

    – Lightbar options: need dim/off option. Light is indefinitely draining controllers battery.

    – More voice options: I’d like to see this utilized more.

    – DLNA/media support: I’m sure you have investors to please. But… implementing something in a past product and taking it away in the next is counter-productive. Bluray players shouldn’t do more than my PS4. Using my PS3 as a media server is something my family and I have loved and used on a weekly basis for years.

  • Read all the comments here and see some people appear not to have checked the PS4 manual, as some of their comments are already included on the sytem.

In case you’re not aware of the manual, the link is below.

  • GGCN

I know that too. ReRead my original comment.

  • (Cont’d…)

    – Headset support: This REALLY needs to be high priority since you did claim it’d be implemented upon 1.50’s release (current v: 1.51). Third-party headsets are compatible but Sony’s aren’t? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? I’ve got this great Sony Wireless Stereo Headset that I’ve used almost daily for years, why should it go to waste? The headphone jack on my DS4 came DoA so I can’t even use the set that came with the console, or any wired headset for that matter. Being able to use my old headset would be a real treat. Aren’t they just drivers anyways? Quote:

“USB Headsets: Will be compatible following system software version 1.50.
*After the update, most commercially available USB headsets will be compatible.” (commercially available, from you!)

“Existing wireless headsets from third-party companies that use a Bluetooth connection will not be supported on PS4, though most USB headsets will be supported following PS4 system software update 1.50.” -PS4: The Ultimate FAQ – North America

So in closing, great job with the launch. We’re really hoping to see some of these implemented soon, especially the headset drivers. Tell the guys working overtime we said thanks. Appreciate it.

  • PS4 update wishlist:

    – Bring back “Dynamic” themes for the Dynamic Menu…seems like a no brainer these 2 items should go together if truly “Dynamic”…kinda embarassing that a PC with Win95 can have themes and a pic in the background, but your 2013 PS4 can’t? C’mon…
    – Bring Back Download List, I literally have to exact same issue as #6 XxDeathDoctorxX in this post, my free fall map won’t download, even from Library, even if I rebuild the database like Customer Service suggested. nothing works, just bring back the DL.
    – Bring Back DLNA & media (MP3/AVI/MP4/JPEG/etc.) capability, USB/External HDD compatibility
    – Allow for Vita data transfer compatibility like with PS3. I loved that I could download a Vita game to PS3and transfer it to my Vita, and re-transfer games off my Vita to make room if needed…it was the fact I downloaded it once, and I could move it as needed, but without that on PS4, if I need room on my Vita, I simply gotta delete it and redownload later, which is a huge waste of bandwidth in comparison to PS3.

Without these features, while it’s a nice machine, it truly feels like a downgrade compared to PS3.

  • I’ve updated my PS4 this morning.

  • also for those with PULSE Elite headsets and PS4, remember that 3.5mm wire that came with the headset, for mp3 players, cells, Vita, etc? well dig it out! if you plug the wire into the PULSE Elite headset and the other end into the DS4 controller, you’ll hear your chat audio in the left ear piece. go into Settings, Sound and Screen, Audio Output Settings, and you’ll see Output to Headphones and that it’s set to Chat Audio. select it and change it to All Audio. and congratz! you can now you your PULSE Elite with your PS4! In order for the headset to receive sound, the DS4 controller MUST be turned on, however the headset does NOT have to be turned on in order to hear your friends, game sounds, music, etc, and yes the mic function will work when the headset is off.

This is a workaround until Sony can add back PULSE Elite headset USB support, but I hope it helps!

  • @ gatormatt

I’ve just re read your comment as you mentioned.

I’d like to see an option to save my PSN password so I don’t have to always put it in when I sign on, similar to the way the PS3 does it. I prefer not to automatically sign in to PSN everytime my console is turned on. But when I do sign on I like it to be quick and smooth, like on PS3 all it takes is two button presses, if your password is saved, to sign on to the PSN.

I don’t understand what you’re saying here, as I mention, you can automatically sign on, or not automatically sign on, you can use Face recognition, or Passcode management (Each user can register a different passcode. By registering a passcode, you can prevent use of the PS4™ system by other users or third parties. After you register a passcode, you must enter it when logging in to the PS4™ system.)

Lots more options than the PS3.

What exactly did you want ?

  • Only Feature that has me hanging onto my ps3 is DLNA support, i have my Bluray library backup up and would love to be able to stream it instead of having to use the disc all the time. Its lazy but more convenient. or give me a Plex app that would work too.

  • GGCAN

You may not understand because you may not utilize that feature. The PS3 will let you save your password, and at the same time not have automatic sign on turned on. The PS4 does not have this option.

  • gotormatt:

Yes, on the PS3 if you go to the XMB and and sign in…you just keep the check to sign on automatically, or remove to not sign on automatically.

On the PS4, you go to the Settings and then Login settings and they either check or remove the check.

So it’s basically the same thing, just everything is organized differently on both systems.

What I see on the PS4, I actually like much better than what had been on the PS3, as there now are lots more options for sign on as well as being able to share the PS4 with other people and having their ids have to enter another password (a great feature if you don’t want people to use your id).

I really don’t mind that it doesn’t look exactly the same as the PS3.

Pretty much the same happens on a pc when you upgrade from one operating system to the next as well and this is not much different than that idea.

  • Definitely Bluetooth legacy support for the old headsets. Turtle Beach and Astro are losing business with no support! That means layoffs or more job cuts!

If they aren’t going to support MP3, at least give us more music apps like Spotify, Pandora…a Sirius/XM app would be awesome because I have a lifetime membership. Not everyone can afford the Music Unlimited at $10 bucks a month when other services/apps are free to few bucks a month.

DLNA would be a great add-on just as if every Bluray player has that functionality now. It would be nice to stream pictures/videos from the PC to show at family party events.

All the apps on Vita like…Youtube, Facebook, Skype, Near, etc.

Some kind of invisible/ghost mode so no one can see you if your online. XBL had this feature for a long time now.

  • @149 I too am having an issue getting any video from Twitch.TV to load in “Live From PlayStation” after the update. The Ustream Videos seem to work though. Is anyone else having the same issue?

  • gatormatt:

On PS3 your id has the option to sign on auto or not as well and that takes you to the settings tab.

It’s not the same on PS4, but very similar.

As PS3 and PS4 are different architecture, it may not always be possible to redesign the new like the old, especially if you’re modify the layout of the XMB like has happened currently.

  • GGCAN

I don’t care how it looks. The only way the PS4 will remember your password is if you have automatic sign on turned on. You don’t have to automatic sign on turned on to remember your password in PS3. It’s a simple nuance, but none the less, I’d still like to have that feature.

  • Well, I was able to play for about 2 hours again but instead of freezing up, the power shuts off on its own. That’s only happened once before. I have tried multiple things, switched to vertical position to avoid as much heat & even switch to a better hdmi cable. It’s still early in the game though. Hopefully a few more system updates can fix it. If not I’ll just have to send it back for a replacement I guess, but I have been having a great time on it till it freezes or shuts off lol. Ill do some more testing tonight!

  • gatormatt:

Yes, on the very left hand side where your id is located. (I understand now what you mean).

I understand what you’re saying, but the UI is not the same as the PS3 any longer.

I like it the new way, understand you like it the other.

I find everything is so much quicker due to the way Sony has re organize everything, that I don’t mind this change.

It could possibly change in the future with updates, that’s a possibility too.

But if they removed it, because it slowed the system down more, than I’d much rather move forward and have a quicker system.

Games start in about 5 secs now instead of up to 5 mins on the old system…I like that much more.

  • WHEN ARE MORE PS4′s GONNA BE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE?????????????????
They’re sold out everywhere (Gamestop, Walmart, Best Buy etc). I’m trying to purchase one before Thanksgiving. Preferably from Gamestop.

  • @ 108 Skater_Ricky – I think you’re the one saying silly things here…of course I need to know….I wanna watch mkv videos on the big screen of my TV….since the quality is perfect…a huge letdown with PS3 is only support for avi video files…..you must be really ignorant if you think there is no reason for PS4 to support mkv…..it would be a huge amount of convenience.

  • Hey, in the update, is there any fix as far as why my screen keeps getting dim randomly? And will the trophies ever sync automatically? Do you plan on letting the system install the download automatically instead of having to manually having to do it afterwards. Lastly, in the ps store, will there be an option to set up a queue of downloads instead of going through the prompts one by one to start a downloads? Thanks

  • GGCAN

It has nothing to do with the way the UI looks. I like the UI as well. I just wish they could add an option to remember my password without the need of having automatic sign on turned on. I don’t want the PS3 UI on the PS4. It’s not a major gripe, I just like that feature on PS3.

  • GGCAN

I just reread your previous comment. On the PS3 under the PSN tab at the top is where you sign in. If you are already signed in you need to sign out to see this. That is where the the option to save password is. Not on the left side of the XMB.

  • gatormatt:

    Thanks.for explaining.

It may be done in the future, remember, it’s only just after launch.

Will have to do this later today after I’m done at work.

Not sure if you were on board at launch with the PS3, but that console didn’t have many of the options it currently does today.

  • On PS4, on the XMB, if you go to Settings and then Login Settings, it’s there as well.

A couple more clicks yes, but it is there.

  • Bring back the ability to play my 3D Blu-Ray Movies please! One of the many reasons I loved the PS3. Thanks!!

  • Thanks for the patch. I’m hoping soon there will be one that includes a feature to allow turning off you PS4 controller while watching Netflix. Right now you can but the video remains paused.

  • Glad to see an update so quick.
I have some minor complaints such as many others:
Notifications of when friends sign on and off.
    Bluetooth headset support.
I’m certain issues such as these will be addressed in future patches.
Enjoying the PS4 and looking forward to what else it brings!

    ..also, maybe another Folding@Home?

  • Keep on being awesome, guys, thanks!

Just…if you have time…you know…let me change my God-awful PSN name. I beg you.

  • Best Update Ever… who would want an x blows 1 when you have updates like this!!! f blkhwkz

  • GGCAN

I bought the PS2, PS3, and now PS4 all at their respected launch dates. The only Sony console that I didn’t buy at launch was the PS1 which I bought shortly after launch.

Again on the PS4 there is not an option to ONLY remember your password. Yes it does gave the ability to remember it, but only if you have automatic sign in turned on. Remember I don’t want to login automatically everytime I turn on my PS4. I just want my password remembered.

  • Does this update fix the hdmi “handshake” issue? Where my ps4 boots up but I get no picture/video on my tv. I’d have to turn off the tv and turn back on then I’d get picture?

  • Where is the playstation headset up date? I have this 100 head steams it doesn’t even work. : (

  • GGCAN

Also I’m not talking about logging in to the PS4 itself. I’m talking about logging in to the PSN.

  • Breaks viewing streams, can anyone confirm?

  • what about the problem with battlefield 4 crashing back to the home screen not letting you play when is that going to be fixed?

  • Yea, A lot of people are having issues loading Twitch Streams on PS4.

  • Awesome to hear! Will certainly be updating when I get home later. I really want some more features and notifications though, like if a friend were to start playing the same game as me or start streaming these are all things I would like to know on the fly. Other than that great job with the super quick update to fix some issues. :D

    Kevin

  • its great to see updates to the system so early. I would like to see the following added to a future software update:

-Media support for music, videos, and photos like on ps3.
-Adobe flash support on the web browser
    -friends coming online notification
-ability to customize the background for the UI to something other than the bland blue look.
-ability to sort games in folders

  • I just got off the phone with a Sony rep & did everything they said & it still frezes or shuts down on its own. They said if this didn’t work I’ll have to send it back so I guess I’ll be playing some FFXIV on my PC for a week or so. =p

  • Keep it up ! Keep those updates coming because right now the PS4 is really messy. Not blaming you guys because it is expected with releases of new stuff, but I’m happy to see you guys are working around the clock to give us a better experience with the PS4 .

  • What about a big update for the PS3? ;)

  • gatormatt:

Yes, I see what you are saying.

It doesn’t bother me it’s not exactly the same, however, I see why you asked.

I’ll have to check when I get back home and if I do find some option hidden somewhere, I’ll post here and advise.

I do remember somthing like this when it asked if I want to connect to the PSN as well.

They have something similar to this on the Vita as well, but there is an option there to remember it.

Could also be coming in a later update as I’m sure some things aren’t on at launch so the console could be shipped to us.

That didn’t bother me, much rather have the PS4 now and wait for the new features than have to wait until 2014 to get the PS4.

As I mention above, if I do find anything, I’ll advise back on this post.
