Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition Revealed

We’re thrilled to announce the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition, which will be available for purchase exclusively through the Square Enix Online Store.

Instead of just throwing together a bunch of cluttered pieces of cardstock, paperweights, or stuff you won’t ever look at again, we spent a lot of time coming up with some things we thought you’d really enjoy. In other words, we wanted to make this Collector’s Edition just that — something you’d actually want to collect.

Collector Box: As a lifelong fan of the Final Fantasy franchise like many of you, I’ve always loved the aesthetics of the Japanese cover art. We don’t want you to feel forced to import the Japanese copy of the game for obscene amounts of money just for the fantastic cover art, so that’s how we came to the decision to choose this specific artwork for the collector box.

80 page Hardcover Art Book: This art book, simply put, is awesome. Everyone is well aware that the Final Fantasy series is known for its iconic art, but we wanted to go above and beyond on this one.

This art book is wrapped in a dust jacket featuring legendary character designer Tetsuya Nomura’s original drawings. Diving into the book itself, the first thing you’ll notice is the foreword by visionary art director Isamu Kamikokuryo. As you flip through the pages, it only gets chock full of more awesomeness, like a retrospective look at the Final Fantasy XIII franchise, more character sketches and renderings, Lightning’s full range of customization, the world of Nova Chrysalia and its architecture, as well as the massive amounts of monsters contained within.

Finally, there are the two full gatefolds that give you an even more introspective look into Lightning Returns. It would have been tragic to force some of these pieces to fit on one page, so instead we spread it across two pages that fold out to reveal even more art.

Silver Embossed Pocket Watch: Lightning Returns revolves around a 13 day countdown doomsday clock — an ever-present challenge that forces you to make game-changing decisions throughout your playthrough. We wanted to give the gift of time back to you in the form of this premium pocket watch.

Aerith Gainsborough ‘Midgar’s Flower Girl’ DLC: For you true Final Fantasy fans, we wanted to make sure you got a DLC code to put Lightning in one of the most recognizable costumes in franchise history.

PS3 Game: And of course, a copy of the game.

If that wasn’t enough, pre-ordering the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition also equips you with Cloud Strife’s Buster Sword, SOLDIER 1st class outfit, and victory fanfare, all for free.

The Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition will be available exclusively through the Square Enix online store on February 11th, 2014 for $89.99.

  • Will Aerith show up as purchasable DLC later, or will she be like Dissidia’s preorder outfits and not appear? As much as I’d like to get her… The fact is, she’s competing directly with Cloud on that front.

  • Looks like Square Enix uses as much reason as Konami nowadays… ‘Let’s throw out a Collector’s Edition and cut out the middle man in distribution at the same time!’ This is laughable, how sad.

  • Not a single European country? You’ve got to be kidding me. You ship to Saint Lucia, Trinidad and the Caicos Island, but not to a single country actually WITH money and players.

  • While I am very excited there’s a collector’s edition, I am VERY disappointed that it’s only available through the Square Enix site. I had a terrible experience with my preorder of FFXIV A Realm Reborn Collector’s Edition with Digital River, and I’m legitimately worried that I will have to deal with the same issue again. Please make this available elsewhere. I LOVE Square Enix, and I LOVE Final Fantasy, and I really want to support you guys!

  • Add me to the list of no buy until digital river is no longer involved. Please sell thru amazon.

  • I really hope somebody from SE is reading these comments, because it’s quite obvious how much disdain people have towards the fact that not only is this collector’s edition available only through the SE Store, which entails terrible shipping charges that force you to wait (or pay a premium) to get the game on the same day as people who preorder from Amazon – but we’re also forced to deal with Digital River. That company has displayed a horrible level of incompetence in the past; they should absolutely *not* be using them after the disasters they’ve caused in the past. Not to mention the fact that it’s a nightmare to even get the orders through to begin with.

This really needs to be changed. There is no reason whatsoever why Amazon shouldn’t be offering this collector’s edition. These are your dedicated fans, Square, and you are not treating them very well.

  • Ordering was a massive headache, and I don’t even know if it went through. I tried ordering the first time, but I didn’t get confirmation of any kind saying that the order went through when I clicked “Submit”. I tried it again, and then a second time with a plushie to see if maybe the site was preventing me from ordering because of their free shipping for orders above $100. I didn’t get any notifications that the orders went through and am now looking through customer service for some way to contact them to cancel the latter two orders if it did get processed. Christ, I’m getting really annoyed here…

  • Only through the online store? I already pre ordered it at a retailer. I wish I could just get it through them.

  • oh noes…DIGITAL RIVER…

  • Can I please get it from the retailer I pre ordered my standard edition from? Through the Square Enix store, the next day shipping alone is $27.00, that’s insane!

  • Really wish I could have read the comments on my phone earlier but they don’t show up on mobile! Didn’t know Digital River was the cause of that Ni no Kuni screw-up so that’s regret number one. Also since I didn’t get any confirmation emails and the site just takes me back to a full cart, I think I ordered two or three copies of this friggin’ thing. No where to sign in and if you go to the Digital River site itself you’d think they had nothing to do with this. There any way of verifying if and what I purchased? Because I really don’t need two or more copies of this game.

  • @61 I feel your pain man. I tried shooting SE an e-mail, but I haven’t gotten a response yet.

  • I cancelled my Amazon.com pre-order and spent a good 30 minutes trying to get an order to post at the Digital River Site. It kept crashing when I tried to submit the order. That site is a piece of garbage.

I am not currently pre-ordering. I’ve decided to boycott Lightning Returns until Square Enix offers the collectors edition through a reputable retailer.

  • I HAVE to have that pocket watch, but I don’t want to deal with Digital River. >_< Hopefully it'll be available through Amazon or Gamestop or something soon, but I doubt it…

    To answer #1
It is on Steam with Trophies and runs in an upscaled 1080P.
I have little to no intention of getting this, but the Aerith outfit is a cool perk, hope for those that can’t get it, can buy it as DLC later.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for DUAL AUDIO! PLEASE CONTINUE THIS TREND WITH FUTURE TITLES! I’ve been hearing FFXV in Japanese for 7 Years now, I can’t have English after a seven year affair, make it happen, even if its paid DLC, and it will make you money.

  • is this coming out on the ps4? or at least to down load it from the psn store? I got rid of my ps3 but I really want to play this as I beat all final fantasy games.

  • Just ordered it.

  • Will we get the Aerith outfit for purchasing a players guide for the game like Japan, or are we stuck with purchasing the CE/stand alone DLC for the outfit?

  • I wonder if all these comments about Digital River are actually reaching anyone that cares

  • Nice package hopefully this will be worth it I think.

  • +1 for being screwed by Digital River on the Ni No Kuni Wizards Edition. Square Enix should definitely consider changing their fulfillment\shipping contract to another company. Also, please offer release date shipping. As the consumer I expect a service level ‘standard.’ I really would like to order this but don’t think I will b\c of digital river and the exorbitant shipping cost to have this at my door on release day. Please make this available at ANY other reliable retailer i.e. Gamestop, Amazon, Best Buy, Target

  • Unbelievable… I can’t trust Digital River (DR) after they cancelled my preorder for Ni No Kuni Wizard Edition… I preordered mine right on announcement date and order got cancelled due to only ordering one, whereas people who ordered a high quantity got priority? Really?

I was ready to throw money for this CE but when I saw this release is not on Amazon I’m going to pull back. Well, good luck to all those that’s ordering this.

$10 for 5-7 days shipping? Laughable! What’s the point of preordering if I can’t get the game a week after release? Terrible execution for this release.

  • Tried more than 6 times over the course of 5 hours and I’m still not able to pre-order from the Square-Enix website. The Digital River store isn’t working. Hard to spend money when it doesn’t work.

  • CE looks really nice, I might get this..

But I really hate that you guys are using Digital River, they’ve been plagued with problems and to top it all off they don’t even offer good shipping options $10 for standard shipping.. wow

If you’re gonna partner with someone to sell things like this, at least go with something reliable like amazon.

  • Anything for the European market?

  • I love how you are ignoring all the questions about a European release, i’m glad you won’t be getting my money for this one.

  • Horrible decision to have this be an online digital river exclusive, FF 13-2 CE was sold everywhere but they pull this crap with the LR CE, digital river is a horrible company and aren’t dependable plus fans who don’t have credit card i guess are out of luck. You are horrible square enix, a truly dumb move and i’ll buy this game used now so you don’t get a cent from me unless they put the CE at gamestop/amazon as well

  • Like many others I was excited for them to announce a CE of this title. But now having tried for who knows how long to get the order to go through and not getting anywhere and realizing that I might just have to forget getting it for now.

  • I want a new FF Dissidia for the PS Vita.
I also want FF XIII Type-0 for the Vita as well.

  • Risked it and ordered. I hope it goes smoothly

  • Please Square Enix, sell this CE elsewhere. Many people will gladly buy buy the LR:FFXIII CE from Gamestop and Amazon in a heartbeat. Digital River has had problems in the past and even now some people are having trouble with it. Please Square Enix, listen to your fans.

  • Does anyone know if this game will be available as a PS3 game download on the PS4? Like many of you I sold ALL of my ps3 games and system and bought a PS4. I heard that I would still be able to play PS3 games on my PS4 via digital download and it is absent! Any thoughts or help on this matter would be appreciated.

  • Add me to the list of people who want this but will not buy anything through Digital River.

  • I would love to preorder FFXII LR CE, Square but your Digital River store is about the worst e commerce site ever. I have tried for two days to order and the site crashes, rejects payment or just doesnt work. I have called Square Support and Digital River support and both are worthless. Its almost as if you dont want to sell your product to your fans. Please direct message me so we can get this resolved. Ive been a fan of FF since the 90s and now you are letting Digital River ruin your name. Stand for something Square and back up your brand!

  • The checkout system does not work. Way to go!

  • I have a serious question: Up until now, most of the comments I’ve read about this are complaints about Digital River and people not being able to buy this because x/y reason. I personally prefer to buy my games from retailers liek Best buy or Gamestop, and many, MANY other people have said the same thing about this. so my question is:

Will you hear your fans and let Gamestop and other retailers to sell this Collector’s Edition or you’re just gonna IGNORE us, your fans, and stick to selling this exclusively on-line?

i really want to get the CE, but i do not posses a credit card and i don’t really want to pay 30$ for shipping (and a shipping that will take 5-7 days, thus, not getting this day 1)

Me and maybe a couple of thousands other fans will wait for your response.

  • Tried to order this, went all the way to paypal and everything was fine until it redirected me to the square enix page with address confirmation. no matter what i choose, the address i entered or the recommended address by square enix, it would not proceed forward. I’m guessing it’s cause i’m Canadian and using a Canadian address? but then why even have a select country with international shipping rates option at check out? This has been super frustrating!!!

  • while i’m glad you guys finally made some sense and use the JPN cover(this should be the standard) why the hell is the edition exclusive to the Square Enix store?

Final Fantasy XIV ARR LE wasn’t exclusive in that store so why now?

and what about the Japanese voices DLC? your just gonna put it on the PSN store right and no redeem code to validate?

and Digital FU****ING River. seriously guys are you trying to become like Namco US? selling exclusive edition to your own store and using SH***TY service like Digital River?

you really need to put these on amazon. i’ll buy it day 1 if you do that.

  • also i was one of the VERY FEW LUCKY people who got the Wizard’s Edition of Ni No Kuni.

it even cancelled my order, but it shipped out of nowhere and it arrived at my home.

seriously Square Enix NA, put this on Amazon now!!!

  • Can’t even pre order the damn thing.
Keep returning me to the address confirmation screen.
Can you explain what the hell is going on? Stupid online store

  • I cannot preorder from Germany!
    Not Fair, SQUARE ENIX !!!
They could at least sell this cool Watch separately in Europe.

Please make shipping available for customers overseas!!!

  • I find it completely ridiculous that this can’t be shipped to Europe. I doubt someone from SE will ever read this but why not ship it worldwide? Why limit the number of people to only NA residents? It makes no sense to me… I’m going to wait a little longer before I just pre-order the regular version but still I just wish SE would listen a little bit more to their fans complaints…

  • Common… only for NA? You know, we are quite a lot in Europe who play final fantasy aswell…

  • Why won’t this be available for EU? It’s so sad. NA even gets the nice Japanese cover while EU get a super boring one. I really want to buy this game.. but with not giving EU folks a chance to get the CE.. I’m really not sure what to do.
