Don't Starve on PS4

Hey everyone! I’m Corey Rollins from Klei Entertainment, and I’m here to talk about our newest PS4 downloadable game: Don’t Starve. It’s available today on PlayStation Store for $14.99 and it’s free for PlayStation Plus.

If you’re new to the game, Don’t Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic. While there are many unique characters to discover and unlock along the way, you’ll start as the gentleman scientist, Wilson. After being lured with infinite knowledge by a demon named Maxwell, Wilson finds himself trapped in a mysterious and unforgiving world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home.

Don’t Starve is a game that gives no instruction, and forces players to adapt or die in the process. And oh my, die you will! After every death, a new world is procedurally generated, and you’ll find yourself scrambling to gather resources, explore the world, encounter bizarre creatures, and play your own way to unravel the mysteries around you.

One of the biggest features of the console edition is the inclusion of every single update since the game’s PC launch. After Don’t Starve’s original release, we committed to releasing regular content updates every 3 weeks for 6 months. In the PS4 version you’ll have them all right from day one, including the massive Caves update and the discoverable “Adventure Mode” which will let you embark on a journey through multiple randomly generated unique worlds in an effort to escape.

Alright folks! You’re ready to begin your quest as esteemed intrepid explorers and champions of science! We’ve poured a ton of love into this game and developed it alongside a vibrant community throughout the beta and post release content updates.

If you’ve got any questions or want further tips, come say hello on Twitter. We’re always around and happy to chat. After all, this game wouldn’t be what it is today without the amazing discussions and feedback from our friends in the community.

  • How about Europe?

    • EU release is Jan 08. I’m not sure about what time, but North America went up around 2:30pm. So I’d expect something similar, but can’t confirm.

  • Corey Rollins , sounds good. i would pay full price on this game as im not a plus member. also all the comment replies are great .

    • Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad I could be here to help answer questions. After today, if you or anyone else wants to chat I’m always watching @klei on Twitter. I try my hardest to personally answer everything!

  • The menus in the game when you hit L2 and R2.

    • Ahhhh yes, unfortunately, we use that button “in-game” so we opted not to use it to prevent accidental miss-use. But in the main menu and pause D-Pad works. Maybe revisit that in a future update. Thanks for the feedback!

  • Great game! Thanks!

  • I was stoked to hear that this game was coming to PS4. I just don’t enjoy gaming on PC. The art style looks quite interesting. The fact that this is free on + is icing on the cake. Thank you for making this happen and send my regards to the whole development team.

    • I will do that! Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out, we hope you enjoy it on PS4 :) We’re really glad we could make this happen on PSN.

  • Just downloaded it; about to start playing!

  • It seems like there is a huge buzz for this game but I am not seeing what the buzz is about. Maybe I should give this game a try and see if its to my liking.

    • That’s exactly why we’re happy to have it free on PSN+ so it’s out there for people to try. Hope you enjoy it :)

  • Just played it for a few mins. So how big are these randomly generated maps?

    • It’s hard to say quantify how big, but they’re quite large, plus there are massive cave areas, with multiple layers.

  • I downloaded the game from the web store and when I try to play the game is says I don’t own the license to it. Why is this happening?

  • I have to check this out at some point soon. But my focus has to be a bigger internal hard drive ASAP!!!!!!!!

    • Sounds like someone is taking advantage of their PSN+ membership well. “How do I hold all these free games?!” haha, hope you enjoy it when you do get a chance to check it out!

  • Still nothing. Where the hell is it?

    • It didn’t update until about 2:30PM PST in NA, so if you’re waiting in EU it probably won’t be until around the same time in the latest time zone. Keep an eye on EU PSN for updates. If your in NA try logging out and logging back in.

  • Omg, fantastic

  • Two hours into Don’t Starve, and the game crashes, causing all loss of progress. The loading screen touts an autosave feature. Maybe not?

    • Hey sorry to hear you had troubles, if you’re able to give us info on how to recreate this or what was going on head over to our forum at forums.kleientertainment.com and let us know in the bug report section.

  • Don’t Starve is still not out in New Zealand. Any ideas as to why this is?

    • It didn’t update until about 2:30PM PST in NA, so if you’re waiting in EU it probably won’t be until around the same time in the latest time zone. Keep an eye on EU PSN for updates. It’s slated for January 08 release though. Just waiting on the PSN EU to update.

  • When is it out in the UK? (Europe)

Should be the same release day for Europe also.

Stop acting like Americans are superior and seem to get everything first – its PSN. All the same.

    • We wish we could release on the same day, but it’s simply due to the PSN release schedule for their network. They do one region at a time. It is slated to launch on Jan 08, but we aren’t sure when the PSN will update, it’s not at an exact time.

  • Since you’re answering questions (Thank you!) can you explain how adding the Platinum Trophy works?

Does Sony tell you to, or is mere a suggestion from them? (I mean you said Sony didn’t ask you to do one, would a dev be able to add a Platinum by his/her own volition)

And if Sony actually *dictates*, what criteria do they use? Because, regardless of whether it’s downloaded or a physical copy, some short games have a platinum, while extended games that take hours to complete don’t.

I hope you will elucidate this matter :)

    • Heya! In the case of Trophies, Sony requires trophies for publishing on the PSN / PS4 and they decide if a game has a Platinum trophy.

  • Yay thanks for the reply! :) Do you, per chance, know how they decide if a game should have a Platinum (i.e. what criteria they use), or do they just say “Platinum / No Platinum”?

Also, on the topic of free games for PS Plus, do the developers of these games (based on your experience) get any “subsidies” per download?

    • I’m not sure how it’s selected from our side, but we did get to pick what the requirements to earn our allotted Trophies were.

As for PSN deals, I’m sure similar to publishing distribution deals for retail / purchase download (Don’t Starve was self published by us!) they’re different for every single game. It would be up to Sony and the Developer to find an agreement when it comes to free PSN+ games, and they change from title to title.

  • I don’t know the policy for free PSN/PS+ games and how devs benefit from it. I was wondering how it was in your case but if that’s confidential/not something you want to discuss, I fully understand. Not sure if this would help as I have an idiosyncratic approach to games, but I’ll “purchase” it from Plus. If anything, I am just really grateful that a developer actually communicates with users! So thanks :)

    • Yeah I don’t know the details for DS specifically. After this post kind of dies down, if you (or anyone else) ever wants to chat with us, we’re always on twitter @Klei!

  • dont see it anywhere

    • if you’re in EU it will pop up once PSN EU updates their page. It’s not a set time, so we have to wait for them to do it.

  • this game is really addicting, ever thinking about adding at least 2 player co op? game gets lonely lol, but i guess thats the point of it

    • Hahah yeah Don’t Starve had a ton of MP talk in the beta. Tons of forum threads and discussion. But in the end, we decided to focus on making a great single player game, that indeed is based around being lonely by design. We really wanted to commit to that promise of a great single player survival game, and put our energy into making great content and a fun experience for that.

This was a really new experiment for us, so we wanted to make either a great single player game, or a great multiplayer game. We felt the first run out single player fit the tone best. If it was designed to focus on it, it could be neat to explore the other side of the coin.

Thanks so much for checking it out. When you manage to find Chester, your world will feel a tiny bit less lonely. Perhaps the Pig Men can be wooed into friendship ;)

  • Wow Klei Entertainment website shows that shank is also from you guys. hade no idea as shank 1 and 2 are some of my top all time psn games of all time out of my 120+ psn games i own. idk if you will see this comment as its the next day now but keep up the great work. shank is to gangsta luv it. also liked on facebook.

    • Thanks so much! We did indeed create Shank, Mark of the Ninja, and Eets. Thanks so much for checking out our games :)

  • So much awesome! Already have it downloaded :3 can’t wait to play this great game for free.

  • This game is fan-freaking-tastic!

Played for a few hours and then remote played on the Vita for a couple more, then went back on PS4 and played until just now.

Thanks for the ‘free’ game I might not have checked out if it wasn’t for Plus!

    • Thanks so much! That’s exactly why we really wanted to get it on PSN+ Instant Game Collection. Really glad you had a chance to check it out and enjoyed it. Enjoy :)

  • Australia?

  • Such a fun game to play, glad I waited to play it on PS4. Been playing it on Vita too! plays great! one thing though, wish you guys would add customizable controls and the option to hold down touch screen to bring up the map, I keep bringing up the map by accident. If not for that it would be perfect to play on Vita. Anyway great game. PS4/PS3/PSVita needs more Permadeath games!

    • Thanks for the comment and kind words! We may do some slight tweaks down the road, I’m not sure if controller re-mapping will be an option but I’ll add it to your suggestion list for PS4 to chat with the dev team.

  • What time will uk get it

  • Wow! If for some odd reason you don’t have PS+ you should take a hard look at this game and drop the $14.99. Great game! If you really are doing some paid DLC for this down the line Mr. Rollins I know you will have at least one day one buyer. :-)

    • Thanks so much for the support and kind words. We are indeed working on more content, some will be expansion some will be free, not sure what the final word is yet, but we’re still developing stuff. :)

  • Where’s the UK update?

  • UK release time update??

  • Cant find it on the store is it out in the uk

  • dont starve 2 please with coop

  • Its on the UK store now if you type it in the store search engine while your in ps4 store but as usual ps plus aint working so its only up for £11.99 iv renewed my licences about 300 times to make sure aswell lol so looks like ps plus peeps aint getting it for free just yet :(

    • It should be up now! just log out and log back in. PSN has a bit of a “range” of update times so even we don’t know when exactly it will go up. But it seems to be all good to go now!

  • Please read guys he is repeating it over and over it takes some time but it wil be free for plus soon cant wait btw epic stuf

  • Just wanted to say I downloaded it for PS+ and it worked fine. I played it one game and my son (9 years old)played two games of it last night. We both really liked it. I survived to the second day. I was so proud of myself just for figuring out how to catch a rabbit in my trap! My son’s first game, he died on the first day because he walked into a spiders nest. The second game, he made it to the 4th day, with me giving him some tips. In that second game, it looked like he was getting sleepy or delerious in some form. The brain icon at the top right of the screen was basically on empty. We couldn’t figure out if there was a way we were suppossed to make him sleep.

If I had to (very loosely) try to describe it for someone, I would say it was a little like Kingdom of Kelflings but with much more angst. You still go through and get your resources, and build up more and better things as you go around the map (although you do it on your own, not by sending kelflings!), but in Kelfilings, you can’t really die, and in this game, you definitely can!

Can’t wait to play it some more. Kudos on a game well done!

  • EU People if you can’t find it in instant game collection search it up and it should be there

    • Thank you for the update! I have to wait with everyone too, I have no idea when stuff goes live. I hear about it from Twitter and these comments haha

  • Hey Corey Rollins, do you know if you guys will be allowing the mods on PS4? I’d like to see my boy lucid’s Spriter being put to work on console already. He’s a childhood friend of mine, and I know that’s one of his goals, to get to see it in action on PS4 and such.

    • Alas, no consoles support user coded content. So all mods have to live on PC, where we don’t have an ESRB / PEGI to deal with, and we don’t need to put every single code change through Certification. It would be really cool to allow mods, but alas, it’s just not possible.

  • @184 – Patsrule0316

Picking flowers will increase your sanity. Also, if you have enough flowers you can build a headpiece made of flowers to wear. That will give you a constant increase in sanity.

  • Interesting! Thanks for the tip.

  • You’re saying a game this simple (albeit fun) can’t run on a PS3? That’s ridiculous….

    • It would indeed run, it would need to be optimized much more, but it’s more about the process of converting a PC game to the PS3. Also, with the new PS4 launch, which we were apart of at E3, they are much more focused on Indie Games such as Don’t Starve. The whole process is much more friendly to us making this possible.

  • One hour in and can’t put this game down.

  • Since I have Don’t Starve on the PS4, is there anyway of having Don’t Starve on the PC?

  • @ Patsrule0316: Once you get the right materials to build the Science Machine while playing as Wilson, you can craft a Hay Roll in one of the Tool crafting columns. It took me a few glances to realize this was basically a sleeping bag. I’m not sure if you can use it at anytime, as the description says you can use it to sleep through the night (which is what I did), but definitely don’t do it on an empty stomach. I thought it might help restore some of my stats, but instead woke up with a shrunken stomach and my health slowly ebbing away. Very brutal game, haha.

@ Corey Rollins: I ended up making five runs at this game last night. Twice I made it up to Day 6. Amazing, fantastic game. Really enjoying it! I knew there was a reason I was excited for the indies they showed at E3. I definitely would have bought this if it weren’t on PS+, so with how much fun I’m having with it, I almost feel bad getting it for free. Count me as another consumer who will purchase any extra content you release down the line. :)

  • @AizawaYuuichhi,

Thanks for the tip. I haven’t gotten that far, but I did make another go at it last night and got to day 4. I have been able to make a fire, fire pit, torch, axe, pick axe, capture and cook rabbits and birds, and make a suit for some protection. But I haven’t figured out how to use any of the things that are locked yet, or found the materials for the science machines. I don’t want any spoilers about this unless they are actually in the instructions, but I haven’t figured out what is going on with the evil flowers, and the gnome, and the mysterious box that I found. I am guessing they play a role of some kind. Very intriuging…I will probably experiment when I do my next run through.

  • This game is hard. ):

I like it. Got 6 days on my first try.

  • @ Patsrule0316:
Of course, spoilers for this game would suck. I also have no idea what to do with the gnome or box, and I also found a toy rocket… no clue what any of this stuff is for.
The mats for the science machine are actually basic drops if you’re in the right area. I just happened to spawn a world in my third or fourth game that put me in the right area to collect them and I was able to build it on Day One. You just have to either get lucky or eventually find them. But yeah, nothing else from me as far as crafting. Part of the fun of this game is figuring out how everything works. I managed to make it to Day 12 last night after posting here. It’s kinda like Spelunky, keep improving your runs as you get farther each time and learn more about how to stay alive. Good luck in struggles. :)

  • I made another run yesterday. Everything was going well. I found gold in my second day, and built the science machine, made a few new inventions and ventured out on the third day. Thats when I made the fatal mistake of trying to take an egg from a tall bird’s nest I stumbled across….

I’ll make another run through today. Still really like it.

  • I’ve been working 10 hour shifts at work this week but now the weekend is here and I shall download this game!

  • Pretty much one of my favorite games. So surprised it’s on the console, so giant on the tv! Awesome work KLEI! Actually gave me something else to play on the ps4 lol…. Play late at night and in the dark for extra spooky, desperate effect :) don’t wanna SPOIL much so discontinue reading any further if you want to discover everything on your own!

…I hear the pig king digs collecting gnomes and other “unusable” items….one man’s trash, another pig king’s treasure! Don’t starve and STAY WARM FOLKS! …..cuz yknow, winter is coming. :)

  • Also impressed with Corey Rollins’ support. Good stuff man!

  • Honestly I think the game should have Multiplayer up to 2 to 4 ppl. but in the start on the game we are all in the same world but we spawn in different places. This will help us work together and have a good connection with our friends. I play this game often but it sometimes get boring when ur all alone in a world with now one to talk to. i start to become insane myself. Thanks for reading…
