PlayStation Now Streaming Game Service Coming this Summer

PS Now

Today, at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we announced that PlayStation Now (PS Now), our new streaming game service, will be available in the US this summer. With PlayStation Now, you will be able to stream popular hits and classic games from the PS3 library, first on PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by PS Vita.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 US models of Sony’s BRAVIA TV lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.

PS Now will begin a Beta program in the US at the end of January with an expected full roll-out in the US this summer. Be sure to check the PlayStation.Blog regularly for more updates on the PS Now service.

  • Will blackops 2 zombies be available? This is my all time favorite game and I sold my ps3 so I can’t play it.

  • Finally PS4 is Backwards compatible. XD

  • TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!!!!!!!! This program is GENIUS! But let’s say the program happens, and I since I KNOW PS1, PS2, and PSP games will be added. If I have data on my PSP can it be used to continue my game on the streamed game on my PS3? Answers would be awesomeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • I agree with 517, and I’m sorry but instead of jumping up and down about this right away I’m going to remain skeptical. How much you want to bet that we’ll still have to buy Plus, because it is required to play online now, and will also have to pay separately for PS Now, and then will have to re-buy all of the titles all over again to use them on Now. Sony knows a cash cow when they see one, and I have seen the Sony people respond to others comments on here, but they refuse to answer the questions like the ones about re-buying titles…

  • like the ONLIVE (2010).anyway

  • Luckily, I kept some of my favorite PS1 and PS2 games and my PS2 console so the new service while nice for those who fancy playing some of their fav old school games, isn’t enticing to me at this point !

  • Hello, can someone please clarify whether PS4 games will be available to stream on any device (as the ones stated). If this is true I will be deeply disappointed. This will absolutely kill PS4 sales, I think it should just be left for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. If PS4 games are going to be available to stream on a PS3, then I just wasted $400 on getting a PS4. I know it has extra features like the SHARE button, but is that worth $400? Not likely. Why would you do this sony? Why would you shoot down your own console? The console you’ve been hyping all year is going to be made redundant.

  • This is awesome.

  • Recently, the biggest thing i have been wanting to do was play some Dark Cloud 1 & 2, but sadly my sis took her ps2 with her, and neither the ps3 or ps4 here has the compatibility to play. I was hopping for the games to become an HD remastered collection like ICO and Shadow Collosus, but i know there’s a slim chance of that (even though i would buy it in a heart beat). But now after hearing about this, I have hopes that Dark Cloud will end up of PS now. LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!!

  • What about all the games that I already bought from the PS Store for my PS3, I’ll be able to play the games, or I’ll have to pay for them again. And what about the saves that I already have, I’ll be able to use them or I need to start the game again.

  • I dont understand where all the processing power is going to come from to run games on a TV without a console? What about latency? PSN is pretty good, but it’s not already without its latency issue, and that is WITH the console handling the processing power in the home. Any details on that?

  • can someone please answer my question about ps plus users being able to have acess to ps now are will it be a diffrient subscriprion i hopecthe answer is yes that the subscriprion should be free to psplus users psplus users are in the dark and we wish to know more please

  • So, does this mean reverse compatibility? If so… YES!!!!!

  • All I understood is that even if you have a PS4 (which doesn’t have the backwards compatibility), you’ll be able to play PS3 games with the service (either rent or own them through it). But say I have physical copies of PS3 games I own and I decide to get rid of my PS3 (which I won’t do anytime soon though) in order to change to a PS4. This means I won’t ever get to play those PS3 games on PS4 unless I rent or buy them again. And this is actually the same problem I had when I got the PS3. I had to buy both Odin Sphere and Harvest Moon again through the PSN because I couldn’t play my physical copies on the PS3. I know everyone likes the whole digital content, but I like having physical copies. I guess though, streaming would only benefit one in the sense that you don’t have to use up your PlayStation’s harddrive and only own something like a license that says you can use the game whenever. Still…I like physical copies. TT_TT

  • ps3 the best

  • U know what its sick that a company like sony has downgraded their charm Playstation 3 To Playstation 4 and selling the product with false views to customers … Just bought a PS4 yesterday its really really pathetic u dont have a media player or usb player in PS4 where as PS3 had it all .. I was expecting PS 4 to play MKV files like mobiles do these days…. I dnt think its good to fool customers this way … Really upset coz had a lot of expectation on this console to be better than previous PS3 but in short i have been downgraded paying extra 400 gbp….. NEVER BUY PS4 …

  • How do we find out about the beat? I would like to test this new concept

  • Ive read quite a bit about this today but i’m confused about how this will interact with PS+. Also i thought we were going to be able to stream games we already have purchased or gathered through PS+. I sold my PS3 because we were told this. So should i abandon the idea of ever getting to play “my collection” on my ps4 and just get another ps3?

This sounds great by the way, especially if the smartphone part is precise. Hopefully we can bluetooth on smaller gamepads rather than the dualshock, I got a Steelseries Free i carry around easily in my pocket.

  • Please someone answer this :/ what about games we have downloaded on the ps3…..will we have to buy them again to play them on the ps4? Or will it carry over with this PlayStation now?

  • to stream on to your phone, does it have to be sony or it can be any android/iOS phone?

  • Sweet! Now, hopefully your guys’s servers will not crash. There will be TONS of people online. So get more servers for more players!!!!

And that would be very, very good if you can sign me up for Beta. (If you need a resume, I have one. I have tested TONS of games on every current Gen and PC.)

  • A long as I don’t need a paid subscription to play the games I have already purchased, I’m all for it. Also, I think it’s about time Sony implemented a way to install ps3 games on to the console so those of us who purchased physical copies can enjoy this service to its extent. Call me old fashioned, but if I don’t have a physical copy of a game, then as far as I’m concerned I don’t own it, I’m just borrowing the service until I can’t divvy up cash anymore. Doing digital downloads of a game that will be fully stored on a cloud service to me is like paying $70 plus the monthly internet bill to rent a game, and that I am not cool with. If digital copies were closer $30 for a brand new title (which they should be being as with digital copies the company no longer has to pay for shipping, packaging or share profit with the retailers) I would be much more willing to jump ship.

  • So cool I know I will definatley be participating in the beta cant wait! :-D

  • PS Now still doesn’t sound like it is going to solve the problem. I want to play MY old PS1, PS2, and PS3 games in the PS4 machine. Why do I have to pay to play them all over again?

  • I really hope this change doesn’t affect physical games because personally i prefer to be able to go and buy a disk rather then downloading a game. Will Playstation stop making physical disks and go all digital? if so i am not on board with this idea.

  • Will we be able to play PS3 games that we already own and play it on PS4?

  • To everyone wanting it to be free to play your ps3 games on ps4 … You do realize sony paid 380 million for gaikai ? They are goin to charge for this service… gaikai was an investment for sony it is a business model for sony & I for one want sony to be around for a long time

  • And please people if you have under 5mbps internet and you play online multiplayer upgrade your internet ( if possible in your area )

  • Would it be possible to pair the Dualshock 4 (rather than the Dualshock 3) with a Bravia TV?

  • i cant wait to use this service but honestly if i have to pay for it im not going to because you are already payng for PS plus playstation now should be tied in to that service but the streaming service will give me the opprotunity to play games that i missed out on on the ps3 because i always had an xbox and another question is will online gaming be possible throught this streaming service

  • Would so love to be in on the beta test for this, My children and I all enjoy PlayStation products, with 2 Ps4’s 3 Ps’3 2 Vitas a Ps1 and Ps2. it is a sure bet that there is always a PlayStation in our house.

  • Well I hope this means if you purchased a game(a old spyro classic) that everyone else got on vita already or some other system in other countries that this means we’ll be able to play them…or even offer a discount to now if you have a subscription to ps+….

  • please create something new for sony psp. i always waiting for it.

  • I would love to play the Mass Effect trilogy on PS4, some Skyrim, and not to mention the current The Walking Dead series!.
    PS now sounds great!
    A lot of potential.

  • ok so does that mean its part of the plus subscription?

  • would like to be apart of the beta. would give great feedback!

  • Please let me in this beta!

  • what about all the ps3 games purchased through the playstation store , too many to keep on hard drive . i have over 200 games from the playstion store , will i get to stream and play all of those games . what if they shut down ps33 eventually , will we all lose the games we have

  • Do u have to have playstation plus membership to use ps now?

  • This sounds cool! Loved to play beyond on my ps vita

  • Finally. I can finally play ps3 games. I never got a ps3 before. So I miss out a ton of games like Puppeteer. Is puppeteer going to be one of the listed games for streaming?

  • any kind of beta signup planned yet?

  • How do you sign up for the Beta? The more i hear, the more I want this!

  • What is download rate as compared to downloading and playing a game the regular way. ? (i.e. Mb usage)

  • I’m very late with commenting on this news. But I am really excited for it. Though I do have plenty of questions, if you don’t mind answering them for me and others wondering the same things. (I am aware that some have been answered, but I guess it can be revised here)

When you start rolling out PS1/PS2 games, will we eventually be able to have netplay like we do on emulators? What about optimization options like what emulators have where you can put games at much higher resolutions?

What will happen when we’re in the middle of a game and get disconnected? Will we pick up where we left off like we do if we’re watching a movie on Netflix?

Will our saves be on a cloud, or our HDDs? And relevant to previous question, what could possibly happen if we get disconnected in the middle of saving a game?

Relevant to the first question, I recall a patent being filed a year or two ago about trophies being added to older games without modifying them via certain methods, does that have anything to do with the PlayStation Now service? It would make sense if it did have any sort of link to it.

These are most of the questions I have for now. If I could receive any hints or answers, that’d be great! Thanks guys!

  • Shut the Heck up, sign me in and take my money…NOW!!!

  • Also, to make a suggestion. Put ratchet and clank, sly cooper or any other good games that a lot of people like.

  • Are you going to make available ps1,2 and maybe ps3 games to download on the store as well as playstation now, or it play station now the only way to play older games on the ps4?

  • So why should I get a PS4 if I can just keep my ps3 and play all future games using PS NOW?
