PlayStation Now Streaming Game Service Coming this Summer

PS Now

Today, at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we announced that PlayStation Now (PS Now), our new streaming game service, will be available in the US this summer. With PlayStation Now, you will be able to stream popular hits and classic games from the PS3 library, first on PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by PS Vita.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 US models of Sony’s BRAVIA TV lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.

PS Now will begin a Beta program in the US at the end of January with an expected full roll-out in the US this summer. Be sure to check the PlayStation.Blog regularly for more updates on the PS Now service.

  • That’s Great!! But What about us Canadians?? We are pretty much in bed with the US why not go all North America with this at the same time? Why limit to a single country? Sony makes just as many sales here. Don’t do the Microsoft thing and only give it to the Americans.

  • great, cant wait for the beta

also will the digital games that we already purchase thats on PS now need to be paid for again?

  • Will we be able to play the games on pc?

  • Awesome news! I remember seeing the news of them purchasing Gaikia in 2012 and hoped this is where it was going haha. I’d definitely be up for the beta if possible! Being a Sony fan is just getting better and better lately :)

  • Just an idea, maybe add a feature after buying/renting so many games you get a free rental or buy a game at a discounted price via offer codes or something.
This service sounds like it will be a blast though just hoping that prices aren’t going to be to ridiculous.

  • Will PS2 and PS1 classics like Crash Bandicoot eventually be available?

  • We recommend a 5MBPS+ connection.

    Yup I’m ******.

    oh well

  • We recommend a 5MBPS+ connection.

    Yup I’m fuuuuucked.

    oh well

  • I think it’s unfortunate that the question, “Will we have free streaming access to the digital games we have already purchased, or will we have to repay either by rental and/or subscription to play them through PsNOW?” has been asked so many times on this thread and we have yet to receive a straight answer. Alot of us have spent hard earned money on the Playstation Network buying games, I would hate to think Sony expects us to pay to play/stream games we already own.

  • I want in on the Beta…

  • Please , Please I beg you SONY!!!! sign me up for the beta, like right now this so awesome I opened my front door and screamed for joy!!!!!! then frozen ran back in yikes its cold! but honestly this could be the best news like ever since PS4 any ways

  • I was wondering how long do we have to wait for the update for the Bluetooth headsets because we’re want to use a headset and are we getting YouTube app on the ps4 or something

  • Game changer. Period.

  • This sounds interesting, but it’s not for me. First off I’m not too fond of subscription-based services and I would rather just download a title rather then stream it which runs with my second reason in that I live to far out in the country that I doubt this will work out all that well for me anyway.

  • I’m hoping one day this will be like a netflix kind of service. Pay your monthly subscription, choose a game to play from a catalog of a few hundred, and enjoy. This is the future of gaming.

  • This sounds really cool but what would really make this awesome is if we can register our games we’ve already purchased and stream them anywhere. I’m pretty sure that’s what was promised back in this years E3 or the ps4 reveal. We want backward compatibility!

  • so wait technically does this mean we’d be able to play vita games on the ps4 now?

  • I really think if you already own a physical disc of let’s say an old Call of Duty on the ps3, that you should be able to play it on PS NOW on the PS4 for no extra cost.

Why pay $400 on a ps4, $60 on a game, $50 on PS+ and now yet ANOTHER subscription for PS NOW… please Sony don’t keep piling on subscriptions just to simply play older games we already own on newer systems…please?

  • This will be most excellent indeed, so it’s at the end of the month aye. Well I hope to test out the new service & give feedback to help improve the service!!!!!!!!

  • Just today I purchased a new controller and three new games for my PS3, explicitly because the PS4 would not play PS3 games. I would consider purchasing a PS4 under two conditions:

    1) The physical and digital PS3 games I already own would trigger free streamed play across the PS4;

    2) My local game saves and trophies would mirror onto my PS Now account.

I’ve seen a lot of other comments expressing the same issues and none that I saw had responses. Maybe seeing that a PS4 sale would be triggered by including the above features in PS Now will motivate Sony into responding.

  • Is there a live demo of this working somewhere? Not a canned demo, but one working over the internet to the actual Gaikai servers.

I’m curious of the lagtime and artifacting on the streaming games.
Every streaming service, including Gaiaki, that I’ve tried bas has lag and wasn’t as clear/vivid as the actual game playing locally.

  • I’m with all the ones that want those Digital Games transferred. I still have my PS3. But I’d be willing part ways with it and buy a PS4 if my digital library streams for free. Seems we all see eye to eye, hopefully SONY “will do the right thing.”

  • Wish you’d be able to download those games to your hard drive.

  • Sign me up for the Beta :-)

  • If we have the service do we have to re-buy games we own/owned or do we get copies of them to play on lets say the ps4

  • WAIT, I’m a tad confused! You’re saying we can continue playing PS3 games on PS4 & tablets. AND we can continue playing PS4 games on PS3 & tablets?

  • omfg thats so blesssedd <3

  • so from what I’m understanding any game that we played on ps3 will be rolled over to this service like we never lost it and can play it on the ps4 for example multiplayer for god of war, or the progress for diablo 3 and etc. so its pay by rental of the product or a subscription like Netflix were you can watch/play any that is available for a set price? I would love to try the beta testing on this

  • Would this service be region locked? (I hope not)

  • So… this service sounds awesome and all… But, will it be going outside the us or will we be screwed over like netflix and stuff?

  • This is defiantly a game changer

Being able to play PS3 games on my PS4 and vita and eventually mobile will change how games work.

I for one will be a part of this, regardless of weather or not my digital library is transfered

  • So are the rumors true? I can play ps3 games on my ps4

  • My main question of interest is:

If we already have the digital version of a game rather it be PS3, PS Vita, PSP, PS1 or whatever bought from the PlayStation Store, will there be the ability for PlayStation Now to offer those games to us for free. Since we are using our PlayStation account that has our purchases that we have made, I was wondering if this would be offered. Or will we have to repurchase these titles or buy a subscription in order to play them on other devices?

  • Make sure to have a least a 30 Mb Internet connection or your screwed!!

  • Is it rent to download or rent to stream. And will ps4 games be added down the road

  • I would like to try out the beta. :)

I do have a question though; would it be possible to make digital PSone, PS2 and PS3 games available to download from the PSN store? It would be nice to have this in addition to PlayStation Now.

  • The question I’ve had since they first talked about this idea was “What’s going to happen with the games I already own digitally?” Am I going to have to repurchase those games or will they transfer over to the service when they become readily available?

  • Congratulations!!!

This is sooo amazing. I remember the Gaikai service before Sony acquired it! Anyway, please take my request to be in BETA Testing into consideration!

Good luck and keep moving forward!

  • So…I could…say I was playing GTA V on my PS3 and I had to go downstairs for some reason, I could just start up my GTA V through my Vita and take it downstairs with me? Is that what I’m understanding? Plus I guess this is like a rental service where you can rent a game and not even have to download it, just start playing right away?

If I’m understanding it right, that is super awesome.

  • While it would be great if this was a part of having a PS+ Subscription, I am totally prepared to pay whatever amount of money Sony charges for this service. While I love my PS3 and am still playing several titles on it, there just isn’t the same “satisfaction” in turning that on then when I boot up my PS4. Even though all of the games may not be up to the PS4’s graphical standards, I am really looking forward to being able to use my PS4 as my Entertainment Hub. So once again…thank you Sony. And Gaikai.

  • Another feature promised then only given to a single country.

Like any other promises from sony it will take almost the entire consoles lifetime to get it here by the time we will not even want the service.

The PS4 is turning out to be half the machine that was promised.

No game interaction feature to take over friends game remotely.
No playstation Now for over a year
Almost 70% of launch titles delayed
3 apps? deja vu PS3 for 8 years.
65-70€ for digital download games or off the shelf.
    No dnla, mp3 playback
    No video chat

When is sony gonna realise there is more markets then just one.

    My opinion and mine alone.

  • Please oh please let me in the beta. It would make me very happy right now.

  • So what about games i have already purchased through psn on my ps3? for example i have black ops 2 digitally purchased on my ps3, i will not have to repay to play it through playstation now on my ps4 correct??

  • Simple Question: What if you already own a physical copy of a game offered on PS Now and simply want to stream it. Will that be an option or will you have to subscibe to play games that you already own?

  • This is really not a game changer for me any way…. going off line for awhile to much hacking going on.. and I’m still not buying a vita!!!!

  • Will there be trophies for these games anyone?

  • Awesome news, I heard rumour’s about this sort of thing last year, glad to see I was not disappointed. Looking forward to it, when it releases in AUS.

  • Do I need a ps3 to stream ps3 games on my ps4?

  • the main question is will you be able to port you save game from the ps 3 to ps 4 via the online storage

  • So I can play games like sonic generation or call of duty black ops 2 on vita?
    Sweet
