PS4 System Update 1.60: Official Headset Support; Gold Wireless Headset Out Soon

Hello PlayStation Nation! The next system software update for PlayStation 4 (version 1.60) will be available for download beginning late tonight, bringing support for the PULSE and PULSE – Elite Edition wireless stereo headsets to PS4. We know you’ve been patiently waiting for this update, which means PS4 owners will now be able to enjoy an enhanced gaming experience with 7.1 virtual surround sound and crystal clear voice chat with our official PlayStation headsets. PlayStation headsets are created for PlayStation gamers, by gamers – and designed to truly provide the audio that game developers intended. It’s truly how games were meant to sound.

I’m also excited to introduce the newest member of our headset lineup – the Gold Wireless Headset, which launches early this month. This new headset offers 7.1 virtual surround sound, custom audio modes created by developers specifically for PlayStation games, a hidden noise cancelling microphone for voice chat while playing online, customizable faceplates, and other features –all for $99.99 (MSRP).

PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset

You can connect the Gold headset to your PS4, PS3 or computer using the wireless adaptor for eight hours of straight gameplay. The headset also is compatible with your PS Vita or other mobile device with the included 3.5mm audio cable. The portable, folding design and travel pouch make it perfect for playing games or listening to music at home or on the go.

The Gold Wireless Headset and the PULSE – Elite Edition are compatible with the free Headset Companion App, which hits PlayStation Store in February. The app allows you to download developer-created audio modes that are specifically tuned to enhance a game’s audio. Kicking off the custom sound modes will be Sucker Punch, who’s developing a mode for their highly anticipated PS4 exclusive inFAMOUS Second Son. In addition to these custom audio modes, the app also offers a variety of preset audio modes for games, music and movies, as well as a tool to create your own custom EQ mode.

  • It say‘s gold edition does that mean there will be a platinum edition? If so i would wat for those!

  • ^wait

  • Now very very happy ….! Can use my pulse elite ….!

  • As others have asked, what about the Stereo Wireless Headset that predated the Pulse models?

    http://us.playstation.com/ps3/accessories/wireless-stereo-headset-ps3.html

  • Good to know that sony isn’t going to make a official bundle for PS4 and this headset

  • A headset whose wireless is redundant on the PS4 when you can just plug in a cable to the controller, and requires a cable for the Vita where the wireless would actually be useful. The only system that seems to benefit from this is the PS3.

I guess I should give up on waiting for a Sony headset that works on all systems and is wireless on the Vita.

    Really disappointing.

  • Will this update support Sony wireless headset 7.1 ?

  • So can we use other headsets via USB yet then the playstation ones???

  • Do the sides become larger if you extend them? because that room for head seems like for a child’s head… (bad design decision?)

  • does this update also make the 99 dollar sony wireless headset

  • does it make it work

  • Can’t wait to try my Elite with the PS4 [It was getting dusty]

  • Great to know that headset support is finally here! Also, surprised to see the new headset for only $100…I was expecting around $150 like the Elite headset that was released last. Might have to get one of those some day! :D

  • DLNA, MP3, PHOTO, MUSIC, VIDEO, AKA EVERTHING THE PS3 ALREADY HAD AND STILL MAKES IT A BETTER ALL-AROUND SYSTEM!

  • who cares about headset support. When is video playback being added to ps4? It was foolish to remove the ability to view our own mp4/avi video files from the console, when the ps3 let us.

  • PLEASE SONY ADD:

    MP3 support and DLNA support!

  • There are countless comments on the internet about lack of CD/MP3/DLNA/external HD support for the PS4. Please listen to the customers that’s what’s on the MOST WANTED list for firmware updates. Check it out yourself.

  • 1) The PS headsets are wi-fi so they can be used with any number of devices that have USB ports.
    2) They are not Bluetooth, and the Bluetooth version on PS3/PS4 is not up to snuff for audio. It’s an older version, most efficient for use with controllers, not other types of content.
    3) The Vita’s wi-fi is for connecting to the internet and can’t be used to connect to headsets at the same time. Also doesn’t have a USB port to connect the dongle to, and doesn’t support Bluetooth either, so give up on waiting for a wireless headset for it.
    4) Yes, the update will work with all three headsets. They listed three and they only have three, though they originally called the first one “wireless stereo headset”.
    5) The Gold headset is not the same as the ELITE for $50 less. From the description, they seem to be missing the Bass Impact feature, at least.
    6) This update was promised “shortly after the beginning of the year”, but took over a month. For those of us who want our NEXT-GEN SYSTEMS to work with our headsets, this update was far more important than DLNA, MP3 playback or PS1/PS2 compatibility. You’re not speaking for everyone when you complain about those.

  • cont…

    7) Thank you, Sony, for finally getting this out to us. Now how about those colored controllers that were supposed to be available here before the end of 2013?

  • Does this mean the old official PlayStation headset will never be compatible with the PS4?

  • Can you charge and still use the New Gold PlayStation headset? I like to use a long USB cable to play and charge the headset so there’s never a stopping moment in my extream gaming life!

  • I am very interested in this headset but after checking several store sites, I am not sure where I will be able to pick this up come next Monday.

  • When are we getting blu tooth support? Id like to not have to plug my px4s into my controller. I like being able to control my chat volume and be able to mute my mic with my headset.

  • Will this support the original Official Wireless Stereo Headset from 2011 (non-elite)?

  • Pulse Elite headsets “LOOK” nicer and of better build quality. They are also $150, I wonder if Sony is feeling generous or if these are lower tier headsets. Either way, they look nice.

  • Happy that I can play with my Elites “on” now with my PS4. The new Gold Headset seems very flexible unlike the cracking Elites so thats a pro as well as the Price. Only con I could get out of this is the removal of the Bass Impact which is something that has impressed everyone I let use my Headset.

  • If you guys want an all-in-one media device, that just happens to play games, then honestly, go buy the system that advertises itself as such.
Sony didn’t remove features from the PS4. They were never there in the first place. And for all we know, they had every intention of adding them in over time, just like they did with the PS3.
They wanted to ship a gaming system that could play games. The other stuff will come with time. Complaining about it won’t make them get it out any faster.
Would you rather get it now and have the update brick thousands of consoles, or have them engineer it with care, test and QA it properly, and get it out when it’s good and ready?
I’m happy with my gaming machine. I can wait for it to do other things. And there are plenty like me as well, like… the millions of owners who aren’t on the internet crying about “removed features” that weren’t present in the first place.
Use some common sense people. Consumer demand != magical firmware creation speed increase.

  • YAY I CAN FINALLY STOP PLUGGING MY PRO ELITE HEADSET INTO THE CONTROLLER AND USE ITS FEATURES!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

  • If it really is foldable, I’ll probably buy it.

  • AiZawaYuuichi……

“bringing support for the PULSE and PULSE – Elite Edition wireless stereo headsets to PS4”

That only mentions two headsets…not the original stereo wireless, so you can see why some of us have questions. Layer in that paragraph it does say all official Sony headsets, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

  • @76 They purposely held out features in hopes to sell us their services. The PS1, PS2 and PS3 all had MP3 support, but they “forgot”? Come on, don’t be such a fanboy. I love my PS4 and PS+ as much as the next person, but at the end of the day Sony is a big corporation who will try to slip things past us if we don’t voice our opinions.

  • I’m buying these’s headsets the sec their are out. I brought the Pulse Elite Wireless headsets and will get Gold Wireless headsets too. :) These’s new headsets are using my favorite color blue on them and its so awesome. $100 is good deal.

Pulse Elite Wireless headsets my 1st pair had plastic cracks on the side of them and had to sent them in for repair. I hope new one’s won’t get that problem.

  • Thanks for the update.. but common, headsets? This is an update to allow you to sell more product. That does not send a good message. You know the community is waiting for much better features: DLNA, MP3, Menu Organization, Lightbar options, and better integration with the touchpad and menus. It sucks my PS3 has much more utility than my newer PS4.

  • Wauw, waiting for 2 months on a descent update and all u guys have to offer is support for some freaking headsets most of us don’t even use?
Where is the promised dlna/media server support, the 3d support, the mp3 and what not that u CAN do on a PS3?
Are we really talking about a new and (not so) improved machine here?
Get extra teams working on this issue, u are a world renown multinational that really dropped the ball here and u are not makeing any extra efforts to make it wright on ur customers?
At least @ microsucks they addmited there faults and changed the specs/firmware support for their machine when the community complained.
U are admiting to a problem and not solving it!
Least to say u are not keeping your community updated on the how and when in a world where people want information and they want it fast! It’s not like u have to print paper for it, a simple message on the playstation forum/blog/facebook or twitter would suffice.

  • Sigh disappointed with this update…..great for those who bought those headsets but for the rest of us we want the music update already. Dlna and able to listen to music already!!!! Come on sony quit wasting time!!!

  • Headset support nice but still, again what most people in forums would like to see in a firmware update is MP3/DLNA/external HD support…..don’t believe me then read the forums. Those are people who don’t want and XBOX1 media features but a ps4 that can at least stream and play some media files.

  • Soooo this update doesn’t include DLNA media streaming support, or MP3 support which was promised in the second update? Thanks Sony.

  • Does the update only support Pulse and Pulse elite? What about other PS3 headsets, or the Vita headphones (w/mic) or the PS3 bluetooth headsets?

  • Neat little update but how about support for the PS3 Bluetooth headset too?

    Speaking of updates, where is:

    1) DLNA Media Player support
    2) Photo, video and music (mp3) viewing support
    3) USB flash drive support
    4) YouTube app support

The system software is *way* behind PS3, 360 and Xbox One. Also, “crystal clear voice chat”? That’s an exaggeration, voice chat is decent at best right now.

  • Good for now, but these features are a must and need priority over anything else:

    1] MP3 Support! PS1, PS2 and PS3 had it, screw Music Unlimited
2] DLNA Support, screw Video unlimited
    3] External HD support
4] Flash support in the browser would be nice
5] Ability to upload game captures to my computer or a USB, many don’t have Facebook.
    6] Youtube App!

It’s bad when my PS3 can do more things than my PS4.

  • I have a Day one PS4 and still in the box until a decent firmware update comes out.

  • We need dongle free support. Until then, this blows.

  • How do these compare to the Pulse Elite Headset in terms of sound quality?

  • I’ve got the GTAV Pulse headset already but I’ll deff pick up this bad boy at some point. That is a sexy headset. :)

  • I really hope they update the system to allow both the old ps3 official headset and the turtle beach headset support. Miss being able to use the actual headset functions

  • Oh this one looks good….nice design…sadly this is just another thing that I will have to buy in the future, damn you Sony lol….haha already got Pulse Elite but who knows…also nice update for PS4 hu….allowing people to use Pulse’s for PS4….really good because when I inevitably buy a PS4…it’ll be good to have my headset working with it.

  • Tempted to get! The Gold headset sounds really great for dat price. Worried though that this means a better, platinum set could be around the corner?

Now, if only you’d just announce where our Red/Blue DS4’s for the US are at… :)

  • Great now I can listen to all my mp3’s on my PS4 headset while streaming from my laptop right? Oh no that’s right, only my 6.5 year old PS3 has the power to do that, I forgot. What a horrendous oversight by Sony that the PS4 STILL doesn’t have this capability. This should have been a no-brainer from day 1.

SONY – PS4 NEEDS MP3 & DLNA SUPPORT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.- I have purchased MLB: The Show every single year since it’s existence. In fact the main reason I got my PS4 at launch was in anticipation of next gen baseball. However, I WILL NOT buy MLB 14 at all if the PS4 doesn’t support custom soundtracks using my mp3’s like it has for many, many years on PS3. It is one of the coolest features that totally personalizes the game for me, and I would miss it way to much if it wasn’t included. Wake-up Sony, you are completely “dropping the ball” on this.

  • SONY – PS4 NEEDS MP3 & DLNA SUPPORT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!! thumbs up
