Hello gamers! I’m Philippe Morin, one of the co-founders of Red Barrels. Our first game, Outlast, is coming to PS4 today, and I’m excited to share that those of you who are PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download it completely for free.
Outlast itself is a survival-horror game created by a team of 11 people with one common goal: to scare the *bleep* out of you.
Here’s the story so far…
So, in short, you’re a journalist who’s found himself in a very wrong place at the very wrong time. You can’t hope to defend yourself against the mutated patients of the asylum, so you have to sneak, run, and hide… or die. We’ve done our best to create a memorable roller-coaster ride, one that entertains, scares, and leaves you craving more.
In fact, one of the most fun things about watching players make their way through Outlast has been watching the terrified looks on their faces, so we decided to step things up a notch. Newly added on PS4 is a difficulty level we call “insane.” If you feel brave enough to pick this mode, you’ll have very low health, very few batteries, no checkpoints, and no chance to save your game. It’s do or die. Survive or start again.
So here it is – turn off the lights, crank up the sound, and hold tight to your controller, because true horror is coming straight to your console today.

I cant even play my ******* ps4. It keeps saying playstation plus is required. Thats BS because it renews on the 24th of this month. Why would you give an update on headphones instead of addressing problems people are having with the system
lol ive been playing playstation ever since you had to take the classic ps1s and flip them up side down to get the disc to work haha
I’ve been a loyal playstation customer almost 19 years. I’m really getting fed up with the BS when are we gonna get an update that improves the system ? I keep getting error messages and playstation is going under maintenance. WHY ?
If this doesn’t get fixed soon. I’m selling my ps4 and staying with microsoft, they do have a better service.

it does hit the store today because the playstation store is going under maintenace as of right now. this review of outlast was probably pre wrote and its a typo
I guess i was a little to eager to download outlast and should have waited for maintenance to fully finish because something got buggard up ond i didn’t get the software license, so im lock out of the game. hopefully restore license should fix the problem .
I finished the download for the game, but now its saying I cant start the application because I don’t have the license for it, WTH is with that garbage!
I’ve been waiting to play this since pc, super excited to try it today!
Another great PS4 game to add to my future playlist. With PS+, I’ll have a nice backlog by the time I finally get my PS4 in a year or 2. Did the same thing with my Vita, and I’m still rocking the free games from the past year on it.
I’ll never have to buy another game at retail, just wait for the freebies. As long as you don’t mind the wait, who needs day 1 bugs and glitches?

Hey is available in Europe today. I cannot find it in the store? Really cannot wait to play it.
Also got the licensing error. Tried deleting it, then went to redownload but now it says PSN is undergoing maintenance. :( I’ll try again in a bit.
For people that are having a licensing issue go to settings then PSN then pick Restore Licenses, that should help.
Ummmmm I see Outlast on the mobile ps store but I keep having a sign in error. I went on my ps4 and now my “what’s new” tab isn’t popping up with anything nor the usual extra details that come when I press down on my d-pad for my games. Is this only happening to me? Is this because of the update? I’m upset because I was really looking forward to outlast and now my ps4 and phone acting stupid :”(
tried the Restore License after the second download the game OutLast and im getting an error code

When I finished download, it told me the licesing issue… Then I deleted it and tried to open PS Store and Library, it told me the sever under maintance… Now I fail to login PS Store from PC. I seems to login sucessfully several times but my plus membership lost in the store. But I can still found the membership in other website…

Grabbed this on Steam. Fantastic game. I’ll definitely be downloading it to play on the big screen though. And by play I mean turn on but then cower in the corner.
I did a direct search for it and it popped up and I was able to download it. Oddly it was two files, an update file and the game. But I had to download and install the entire game to play. There was no, “Download a small file and start playing” feature.
But it is definitely worth the wait. Even while you are alone the music and the atmosphere really make this title a must buy. It fulfills those internet memes, “You’ll ______ bricks when you play Outlast”

Downloaded it but it says I can’t start because I got no license required… wth? anyone else got this?
Between the constant log outs of PSN on my PS4 and the web store, I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to play Outlast today. PS3 is working fine, so I guess I’ll get my survival horror fix with Metro. Or maybe I’ll finish up that Resistance 2 plat I’ve been working on for the last week or so… So many decisions.
excited to get another game to enjoy on the PS4. and for hopefully the return of actually scary intense horror survival games. downloading now so it’s ready when i get home.
OK. I had the same problem with the license and solved it shutting down the console and entering again .
how come i can’t buy outlast at the ps store because of the ongoing maintenance?

I downloaded soon after it was upped. I also had the license error. I reactivated the console and restored licenses, no problem after that.

I downloaded this game, i am a PS + subscriber, and it will not let me start the applications when i try it says “this application can be started only by a user who has a license for it” how can i play the game?

this game is freaking scary the youtube commentaries dont do the game just and with the surround headsets its like its really there
ok my maintainance is done but its not even on my store’s list i cant even search for it what the @#$%^# is going on? >:(
A hundred people asking the same questions. Read all, or at least most of the post before asking a question in the future please. If you are getting an error saying the system undergoing maintenance while trying to access the PS Store, or trying to get the download, completely shut off your PS4 for a few minutes. This does not mean Standby Mode, shut it off. Also check to make sure maintenance is complete before you start complaining about stuff not working or not being available. After you turn it back on, go to settings > PSN > Renew Licenses and then let it do its thing. Should only take a minute.
Once everything is done, you should be able to access the PS Store, and successfully purchase/download.
This problem occurred before for a very small number of users, where they were unable to download and/or play a game they got from PS+. Basically, for some crazy reason, the update ‘disconnected’ the PS+ association from some users, and renewing Licenses will 99% of the time fix the problem.
Be grateful you can get $100+ in free games almost every month for a mere $50/year. Heck, last month alone was something like $140 in new games added to the Instant Collection.
To bad the PlayStation Store here in Canada @10:00pm EST is down and won’t let me down load this game on my ps4 what’s going on Sony?

Game is great, Philippe. However, can you perhaps in a future patch make the Run/Sprint button a Toggle function instead of a Hold? It’s straining my thumb to keep the left thumbstick (L3) pressed down for long periods of running (and there is indeed a lot of running).
Hello, there are different control schemes. The default has the sprint on L1. It’s a lot easier to hold down.
