PS4 Hits 6 Million, Ushers in New Era of Social Gameplay

PlayStation 4

As you’ve probably read by now, cumulative PS4 sales have now surpassed six million units worldwide following the successful launch in Japan just over a week ago. It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice. Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90% of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers.

There have now been more than 3.6 million live broadcasts, and more than 56 million spectate sessions on PS4 through Twitch and Ustream. In fact, since January 1st, PS4 gamers account for 20% of daily broadcasters on Twitch. PS4 owners are also embracing the Share button on the DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller, with more than 100 million shares captured as fans show friends their latest achievements on Facebook and Twitter.

And soon, you’ll be able to share your greatness in new ways. Developers are beginning to take advantage of PS4’s new interactive live broadcasting gaming features, integrating modes that allow broadcasted gameplay to become interactive for spectators. Even as a viewer, you can now influence livestreamed gameplay.

For example, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition features a built-in Broadcast+ mode where you can stream your gameplay while viewers on the PS4 or a web browser influence positive and negative effects during gameplay. More social feedback is on the way too, with Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition in March and Daylight in April.

We love the enthusiasm that all of you have had for the PS4 since launch, and we can’t wait to share more great games, experiences and features with you soon. Greatness awaits!

  • @ 47. By Sony’s gratitude, do you mean the free PS Plus subscription and the free games you get just for purchasing a PS4?

  • BIG congratz! Hope you get that supply in to gear by next week, you won’t want to miss out on Infamous Second Son + Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes’ sales boost.

  • mastorofpuppetz

6 million who need to go back to their ps3 to stream media, play mp3’s, play you tube. System also needs ui improvements, sony is way too quiet with the ps4 updates, it needs a lot. Still doesn’t notify you when friends log in.

  • Knack for the win! He has enormous potential for growth. Loving my PS4. Just popped Knack back in, and I can’t get over how much fun this game is.

  • mastorofpuppetz

Wish my auto downloads would work on PS4 mine still doesn’t.

  • wOrldXploRe

i am very happy with my purchase of a ps4. i am also happy with my ps vita.

all the free games and the other great features…you guys deserve the sales. congrats!

Great numbers for sony,it’s got to pass the 7 million mark by march 31st.

And to think the ps4 is sold out in the uk at this time and many other country’s. Plus no good Exclusives yet.

Very good numbers by sony well done. Now please bring mp3,mp4,linux,dnla.

Also if sony does bring the emulation to play old ps1 and ps2 disc based games for ps1 and ps2 they will bring the old ps1 & ps2 audience of fans back and will sell more millions. Considering you cant buy a ps1 or ps2 console now.

Let ps4 emulate old ps1 & ps2 disc based games for people with a large library

And a complete catalogue of ps1 & ps2 games to download digitally from the store.

  • I like my PS4, and the thing is that I don’t use the social media aspects at all. I am a gamer who simply wants to play games. I don’t even have a Facebook account (don’t want it, don’t need it). A few nights ago, I was playing around found the live feeds section, and I thought that it was kind of weird to watch someone else’s game. In some cases, the guy even had a live video of himself playing said game, even weirder still. I don’t know about anyone else, but I found and reset my privacy so that no one watches, or worse, interrupts my game. I’m a little curious as to how others feel about this. . .

If you mean that developers may be able to do something similar to what we’re seeing with TwitchPlaysPokemon on Twitch.tv, then this will really be a new and important era in gaming with regards to worldwide social interactions between the persons who are playing the games and persons who are viewing (and now interacting and influencing) the gameplay.

Can this really be “Greatness Awaits”? This will be far-out.

  • Congratz Sony! That’s so awesome, I really love my PS4.

  • Ichi_The_Espada

Would be nice to get updates I care about such as: 3D Blu-Ray playback, DLNA support, fixing the Remote Play bug when using a Apple router, mp3 support(seriously), etc. Toot your horn all you want but Xbox One(which I also have) is trouncing ps4 on the media front.

  • Congrats

@49: Not true, but live your life in ignorance. But please do get off the internet so you don’t infect others with your disease.

  • @59: They talked about that type of connectivity ages ago. Well before Twitch Plays. No game has used it yet though. Until today.

  • – Release well designed, non FPS games such as platformers, rpgs, strategy, adventure etc. not only indies
    – The focus you are giving the Share button is wrong, it should be to SHARE with your friends to fraternize, not to come off as great or anything. Humble, not arrogant.

  • TH_Swan_Jon

This is great news guys! Congratulations :D
On a side note, any news on a big PS4 firmware update? I would like the HDCP encrypted off so I can use my Elgato soon :)

  • That’s nice. Meanwhile the Vita is dead due to lack of proper support.

  • CrusaderForever

Congratulations Sony!!! I love my Playstation Ecosystem! :) It’s self sustaining with a nice assist from PS+! This is great news and well deserved! Thanks for listening to your fans and understanding that the developers are so very important. Taking their advice and crafting an incredibly powerful console that dwarfs the X1! Most importantly, the Dual Shock 4 is a masterpiece in precision!

  • Congrats guys! Now once The Show comes out it’ll all be worth it for me. :D

(I do wish you’d get PS2 and PSOne classics on the system, though – I want to play some Disgaea!)

  • Wow i can’t wait till March 18th when Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is released.. I believe a lot more people will buy PS4’s once they see how great the game looks on the PS4.. This is probably the game i will be playing for awhile until phantom pain is released..

  • Bring on PlayStation Now.. I feel bad for gamestop and gamefly..lol But good for Sony they deserve everything that is coming their way.. Great job.. I wouldn’t hesitate renting a game from PlayStation Now.. Better than buying it at a high price when your probably not going to keep an old game.. Just experiencing the nostalgia alone is alright with me..

  • ahernan2013

Looks like they did a AWESOME job with 6 million consoles sold. The next exclusives are Infamous, DRIVECLUB, HoHoKum, DayLight, etc… PLUS WE might get the DLNA enabled by April. On a gamestop website, I saw a PS4 blu ray remote control and a PS4 media player. AND they all point to an April release. So, that is my guessing. But overall, KEEP delivering more free games, I LOVE IT!!!

  • Definitely well deserved and earned! I can’t wait to see where the PS4 goes from here!!! Now I just need to get one!!!

  • boob-monster

This is amazing, I cant belive how popular ps4 is, keep bring the games to ps4, and vita (speacially to vita) and congratulations 6 million sales.

  • DecadanceFantasy

Yeah PS4! I will own one some day.

  • This happy PS4 owner would really like to see some sort of Blu-ray/media center remote (along with media center capabilities, of course). It’s quite a bother to have to use a DualShock 4 to control Blu-ray disc playback.

  • Congrats Sony. Well deserved, now give me my Naughty Dog game.

  • Great sales and Congrats to you SONY, thanks for for making my life easier and enjoyable. Now focus on the big production games (AAA) (indies dont sell consoles) and adding missing functionalities.

  • Could it be that the PS4 is poised to hit 10 million sold before E3 or by E3. Because once that happens if I’m correct we will get Kojima’s next masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ElektroDragon

Can we get some custom themes with embedded custom audio/music support?

  • ElektroDragon

And a media remote with backlit keys?

And a removal of the 100 icon Vita limit?

  • Congrats, I’d say you learned a lot from the PS3’s launch. Now, how about producing some more cameras?

  • ElectroplasmGT

Why isn’t the SEN Add to Cart bug being acknowleged? This has been going on for weeks. Sony isn’t even responding to all of our requests and inquiries. Chat and Phone support gives me the run-around. I missed the burnout paradise legendary cars dlc and now I’m missing these ps+ IGC games. I’m a paying ps+ member and it’s about time that Sony address the Add to Cart issue. Clearing cache and different web browsers isn’t helping for a lot of us.

  • TheRealBushkill

    I love you

  • LuiSpartanMIMIMI

    Congrats Sony!

Now bring Syphon Filter to PS4 and Patapon to Vita!

  • StormxNights

Congrats Sony!!! It has been a long road back to the top….

  • This is not what we want to here about. Sony is selling PlayStations. Wow. This isn’t news. We want to know about the updates. The article should read like this “Coming soon in the next update.” That is the news that EVERYONE wants to hear.

  • Still waiting for MP3, DLNA, VIDEO and PHOTO (custom wallpapers)

  • Howah!!!

  • AMILLocanoxJosh

    congrats!!

  • Broadcast+ is nice and dandy, but what happened to the much-promised remote gameplay? One viewer being able to take control of a friend’s game? Or is it that Gaikai is still not up to snuff? We might think so…

  • The other guys who you’re beating the snot out of announced that Twitch streaming is going to be 1080p for their console. Hopefully you guys have plans on increasing the resolution for streaming, or else uneducated folks might think that games on the other console look better.

  • Congrats Sony

  • Don’t sony i’m getting a ps4 for my birthday this year(2014) in May!! Right now i’m on my ps3 and ps vita, on my ps3 to go online gaming and working on going online on my ps vita so yep. Any way congrats sony you did it ya’ll send the ps4 to the whole entire world or all across the world!!! P.S. Can’t wait to get the ps4 for my birthday!!

  • gowofwarkratos1

Congrats Sony! Regarding the PS4, there is a problem about download that I would like to report. Unlike the PS3, the PS4 doesn’t resume downloads once the connection is lost in standby mode. Its only resume downloads after I turn on and login, and then manually resume it. I would appreciate if this could be solved in the next updates :)

  • I’m really happy to hear that. Keep on the great work on this amazing gaming platform.

  • Congrats on making a console that is fast selling and fast overall with everything the ps4 does.

  • plaztiksyke

Can’t wait for more AR games like Start the Party, EyePet, and Wonderbook Diggs Nightcrawler on PS4. 1080p 3D AR is the killer app for PS4 IMO.

Would really love it if the web browser performed better — it looks like there’s no GPU acceleration used on *anything*. My old iPhone 3G performs better in the HTML5 fishbowl demo, and it plays the audio properly :/

  • Glad to be part of that 6 mil. Hope I invested in the right company, I am certain I made the right choice this gen.

  • Still no MP3 nor CD support and it’s now March. We were told it would be Jan or Feb. And the worst is no sound is made when a message arrives nor when a friend logs in. I actually miss alot of invites both on PS3 and PS4 because I’m either busy gaming or am on my PC. I need some kind of tone to let me know a message has arrived… Come on Sony…

  • I at least expect the PS4 to do what the PS3 does (and then some) bar the ability to play PS3 discs of course.
