A Message From Jack Tretton

PlayStation Nation,

It is with mixed feelings that I inform you that I will be stepping down as President and CEO of SCEA effective March 31, 2014. This is a result of a mutual agreement with SCEA, and I leave knowing that the PlayStation brand has never been stronger, PlayStation 4 momentum continues to accelerate, and the future will only get brighter for our gamers.
Serving PlayStation fans for the past 19 years has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. Your passion for gaming inspired me every day.

I want to thank you for constantly pushing PlayStation to deliver breakthrough gaming and entertainment experiences, and to never settle for “good enough.” The embodiment of this commitment can be found in the PS4, which has quickly become the #1 next-gen console worldwide…thanks to you.

We’ve shared many memories over the past two decades and I’ll always be grateful for your support.

Thank you,

Jack Tretton

  • Not sure how to feel about this. Not happy really, as this man has been instrumental in making the PlayStation brand what it is today. Say what you like, but PlayStation is stronger than ever now. We shall see if the next guy can carry on with great gaming experiences.

As for the rest of it: Most decisions made by large corporations are purely financial. The “other” console was largely populated by shooters, so Sony did the logical thing and brought more shooters to its consoles. I don’t personally care about most shooters; I like some TPS and even fewer FPS games. I don’t like QTEs, but I’ll tolerate them if they are done well (shrug) and are relatively infrequent. IMHO they shouldn’t overwhelm the experience. But that trend will pass like all the others.

  • These are not things to worry about. Keep playing the games you like while praising and recommending them to others. I’m an old-school JRPG guy, BTW. I can attest that many of these games can be challenging despite the gameplay being less action-oriented (for the most part). They can involve deep strategy in figuring out which combos or spells to use, and with which equipment and so forth. It’s not always as easy as pressing X.

But sadly I just don’t have the time for most RPGs any more. I enjoy a wide variety of game genres, and I’m usually not willing to invest potentially hundreds of hours playing one game while my backlog grows.

    Cheers.

  • Best of luck on your next achievements. I was wondering why can I not hear anything from my PS4 on the Gold Wireless Headset Stereo. I have the Headset Companion App, I still do not hear anything. What am I doing wrong? I here everything just fine on the PS3. I am getting nothing on the PS4. Can you please give me the ropes on what I may be doing wrong.

  • Many tks,Jack.
    Wishing u’ll have wonderful future.

  • “Say what you like, but PlayStation is stronger than ever now.”

i am still very confused by this since the Playstation and Playstation 2 sold over a hundred million units each. PS3 is still quite a ways from reaching 100 million.

Also, the PS and PS2 had much better video game libraries.

So, in what way is being worse being stronger than ever?

  • Mr. Tretton, it’s been a pleasure being on this side of the consoles you’ve overseen. Your smooth demeanor and genuine delivery at E3 have caused me to involuntarily clap with glee many, many times. Thank you for everything.

Of course there’s more to it than that… although not much. ;)

But I mostly said what I did to neuropunk because of his similarly stripped-down and dismissive synopses of the genres that don’t appeal to him. His expressions were embarrassingly shallow, as shallow as the games he bashes supposedly are, so it was an act of dispensing a taste of one’s own medicine on my part, in hopes he’d see the error of his ways, but of course, it was all for naught. Oh well. I tried.

    @ neuropunk

Well, if you’re looking at sales numbers to find evidence of Sony’s resurgence and/or overall brand strength, then simply look at the numbers for the most recent console and compare it to previous launches. There it is.

And if you’re speaking of strength in an all-encompassing manner, long-term success takes care of that. The PlayStation brand naturally has more influence in the industry now than it ever has, simply because more people are aware of the brand now than ever before. Influence is a huge part of strength.

    You’re welcome.

  • @neuropunk: What he said. :P

Or something like that. The PlayStation is now arguably the top dog vs. being the new kid in the PS1 era. Sure, more PS2s were sold than PS3s so far. More PS3s will continue to be sold, and you’ll see steady sales after the monster price drops over the next year or two.

But frankly I blame the somewhat smaller sales numbers (which are not final totals) on the relative strength of the competition in the PS3 era. Without looking at the numbers, I’d bet that the Wii sold better than the GameCube. The 360 has been very successful as well.

The PS1 and PS2 having “much better” video game libraries is entirely subjective. There were tons of great games in every genre during those years, but I’m having no trouble finding games to enjoy on my PS3.

Sounds like you are having trouble. You should continue to lobby Sony to bring more RPGs (and whatever else you like) to its consoles. But maybe calling the departing CEO a piece of crap is the wrong approach.

  • Sad to see you go. I actually liked watching you on E3. You were always calm, cool and collected :)

  • Well… that kinda sucks. I liked this guy.

  • You’ll be sorely missed, Jack. You did some fantastic things for the PlayStation brand. Best wishes for the future. Kick ass wherever you go.

  • When I asked for your help you ignored me,games that were ONLINE ONLY got shut down,i didn’t pay for these games so they can be a paperweights now,I hope you get fired from youre next job.

  • Jack Tretton I just want too say thank you for giving us the PS4 and I wish you the best of luck and God bless

  • What?

    I loved your E3 conferences :-(

Wish you good luck for whatever you do next :-)

  • Wow really sad news! Best of luck for you!

  • Thank you for everything you have done. You made my business with sony a friendly and trustworthy one.

What you said has been always backed up with truth. With your departure Sony will be left with a giant whole to fill.

I sure hope you stay somewhere in the gaming community doing something. If not I hope what ever you do next you find great success with.

    Cheers

And think you. For all your Time.

  • That´s is so sad I guess . that you worked so hard since the Playstation came to America that is a bad news to the gamers. I hope that the E3 from this year be fine. I always enjoyed the E3 with you on the show. Bad News but I hope hope the brand Playstation continues strong in the videogames technology and services as ever. and I hope this is not a Bad news for the company and the industry gaming itself on Playstation. Who will be the next Ceo ? Why are you leaving so soon ? Whats going on ?

  • Will really miss you jack you have been amazing for sony and i wish you the best of luck where you move on next bye jack ?

  • Thanks for everything, Jack.

  • I keep telling myself this HAS to be a joke.

But it was only a matter of time before I accepted reality.

I want to thank you sir for the years of gaming you’ve brought to us fans. I was a Playstation fan the minute my mom bought me a Playstation 1. I was even a huge Sony fan from the minute my Trinitron lasted for many years before it bit the dust.

You may or may not be religious, but I pray that God paves a safe way to whatever you undertake next. May God bless you Tretton and keep you. May he guide you along your next journey or your retirement.

    You will be missed.

  • i always loved watching jack during E3 or any press conferences he always came across as a genuine guy not just some suit trying to sell you things. the PS community will sure miss you and best of luck in your future.

  • Impressive work Mr. Tretton, thank you so much for giving us the best E3 conference in history! and your passion working for the PS brand. Best of luck!
