Introducing Project Morpheus

Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE’s prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

Project Morpheus - PS4

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we’ve refined our vision for VR. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers that are as enthusiastic about this new medium as we are.

At GDC 2014 this week, attendees will be able to check out Project Morpheus in action at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

  • Any estimate of a price range?

    • Shu Yoshida
      Shu Yoshida

This is a prototype, and we are not talking about our final product yet.

  • DarkStar83x

    Looks promising.

  • deathshadow799

If only Fumito Ueda released a videogame on virtual reality glasses…. o well, first he has to fu***ng finish The Last Guardian.

Looks amazing anyway. I hope we get more info on E3 2014.

  • gowofwarkratos1

I hope that is not expensive hehe!

  • Awesome

  • Day one purchase for me. Been waiting on this ever since I heard y’all were prototyping it a couple of years ago. Good luck on a final set. Will be waiting for more info!! Thx Mr. Yoshida- San

  • can I have one?

  • I guess I know where my disposable income is going:)

  • gerneric123

After the “support” Move, and more alarmingly, Vita, got I’m not too hyped for this. There’s no guarantee Sony will actively support the technology beyond the launch window.

  • The Future Doesn’t Start Till Sony Says So… And By The Looks Of This, There Telling Us It’s Starting Now!!

  • gowofwarkratos1

I can’t wait to see this in action :)

  • Awesome! I hope the price is reasonable. Also is the PS camera required? And I didn’t even know that Move even still existed :/

    • Shu Yoshida
      Shu Yoshida

PlayStation Camera is required, PS Move is optional, depending on the title.

  • Here’s hoping you guys also don’t send it out to die like you did Move and Vita…

  • Rabzinatorz

    It’s it’s it’s.. IT’S BEAUTIFUL! TAKE MY MONEY NOW (if it’s affordable)

  • JeRzYzFyNeSt

SHU just focus on the PS4 !!

games for the VR will take forever to make. it does look nice tho

  • ossiecastro5

This looks very promising. I hope for the best and hope that it will enhance our gaming experience. Thank you!

  • matthew1836

WOW I always wanted to look like a member of Daft Punk

  • If it costs less than the PS3 3DTV (which dropped in price by like half before I even finished paying it off, and then you guys stopped making games for it!) then I’d like to preorder now

  • GiveEmHellKid__

This sounds promising. Let’s see where it goes.

Direct competition. Wow, this is what excites me about the video game industry. Innovation is met with hardcore competition, and WE ARE THE WINNERS ALWAYS. Haha.

I can’t wait for this year’s E3. I wonder if this will take up a large portion of the conference. I’m curious to learn more; this feels promising.

On the other hand, I will be saving up a large portion of money.

  • Break the Walls Down! i am so buying one when it releases!

  • Take my money!

  • darkgemineye

I love the fact that Sony continues to bring us new and innovative tech. Keep it up guys! But before you give us the next “big thing”, can you please give us 3D Blu Ray playback for the PS4? Baby steps Sony. Thanks so much.

  • Any idea when more PS4 camera’s will be available?
I’ve been looking for a month or so.

  • No Driveclub? I thought they were gonna support the VR headset. Thats why they had to go back to the drawing board. Well anyways its great news for Playstation nation. Ill buy it no mattter what. But it worries me a bit. they didnt show much of info. No release window? I guess coming holiday 2015. or even later. Not this year for sure

  • FJ1100_rider

need any beta testers ? sign me up if you do
I doubt this will ever take off though , nobody wants another gimmick that doesn’t make the games more fun or playable or gives you a headache in 30 minutes of use

  • I think that this might cost anything in between 100-300 US dollars.

  • Shut up and take my money! Lol ;) no but this is HUGE!!!! I have been wanting this for YEARS YOU GUYS!!!! I PROMISE you that the moment this is available for purchase, whether it be day one on shelves or pre-order online, I WILL BUY IT!!!! Though I hope it will cost less than the PS4, I DON’T CARE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!!! I MUST HAVE IT!!!! I LOVE YOU SONY!!!! What you are doing is beyond just gaming, this is pushing ALL of technology forward! This is groundbreaking and I WILL be there as a Playstation VR pioneer from the very start :D

  • Day one buy for me, don’t forget about my PSVita and send me a devkit now.

  • boomstickbhg

how about introducing a store update?

  • Shu: this is Important, will a purple model be available??

  • What is the point of this gimmicky headset? No wonder Sony keeps having financial problems, since they keep pouring money into needless accessories that no one wants like the ps move. :/

  • Who do I sign the check to? And why do I still own checks?

  • btw, where in the world is the psn store update?

  • Really excited for this and how it will bring greater immersion to gaming.

  • Why 90 degrees? Why not 180 degrees? Or a front camera to map out your playing field, turn your house into a haunted house. Make obstacles in your home an object in the game. Able to take the headset outside for some FPS with the neighborhood kids.
Some real VR action, GSM or some NFS :p

  • Hooligantuan

And I thought Oculus’s Rift looked kinda clunky and unwieldly, then Sony reveals this lunk!

  • GTA, not GSM

  • freshprincepbg

Just take my money now! I hope this comes soon

Shadow of the Colossus would be epic in VR.

  • Blitzkrieg_exe

Finally, something to do with the PS4 camera I bought at launch!
I hope I can wear my glasses under this. If not, I guess it’s time to start wearing contacts.
The only thing that can stop me is a huge price point.

    • Shu Yoshida
      Shu Yoshida

I ware glasses and have no problem using this prototype head mount unit :)

  • This would go well with the store updates being on time

  • That caught me off guard, super awesome! go PS!

    The future.

  • che_guate07

AWESOME, can’t wait for this, hope they come up very soon.

  • Can’t wait.

  • Now how about a Playstation Camera extension cord so it can actually reach my PS4 from the top of my TV like my Kinect can do with my XBOne.

  • president2038

Beyond! When can I have this? For how much? What games can I play?

    • Shu Yoshida
      Shu Yoshida

This is still a prototype, and we are not talking about final product.

  • oo7PorscheMGS

Should give one away on the PS Blog :P This WILL be awesome but show us some actual games + price before we can get tooooo excited. I hope this will work with some PS4 games..DriveClub, etc….. add it in to your main games SONY and SHOW people why it’s the future. Looking forward to seeing the demos.

Imagine a game like InFamous or DriveClub in VR………….. or hey, Uncharted 4… :P

  • One would assume this would require more 3D content on the PS4?

  • I wonder if this will be as popular as 3D gaming?
