Introducing Project Morpheus

Shuhei Yoshida's Avatar Posted by President, SCE Worldwide Studios

Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE’s prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

Project Morpheus - PS4

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we’ve refined our vision for VR. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers that are as enthusiastic about this new medium as we are.

At GDC 2014 this week, attendees will be able to check out Project Morpheus in action at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

This is a prototype, and we are not talking about our final product yet.

If only Fumito Ueda released a videogame on virtual reality glasses…. o well, first he has to fu***ng finish The Last Guardian.

Looks amazing anyway. I hope we get more info on E3 2014.

After the “support” Move, and more alarmingly, Vita, got I’m not too hyped for this. There’s no guarantee Sony will actively support the technology beyond the launch window.

The Future Doesn’t Start Till Sony Says So… And By The Looks Of This, There Telling Us It’s Starting Now!!

    Shu Yoshida said:

    March 18th, 7:41 pm

We are demoing this at GDC PlayStation booth starting tomorrow.

Mando44646 said:

March 18th, 7:02 pm

Awesome! I hope the price is reasonable. Also is the PS camera required? And I didn’t even know that Move even still existed :/

    Shu Yoshida said:

    March 18th, 7:42 pm

PlayStation Camera is required, PS Move is optional, depending on the title.

Mando44646 said:

March 18th, 7:02 pm

Here’s hoping you guys also don’t send it out to die like you did Move and Vita…

If it costs less than the PS3 3DTV (which dropped in price by like half before I even finished paying it off, and then you guys stopped making games for it!) then I’d like to preorder now

This sounds promising. Let’s see where it goes.

Direct competition. Wow, this is what excites me about the video game industry. Innovation is met with hardcore competition, and WE ARE THE WINNERS ALWAYS. Haha.

I can’t wait for this year’s E3. I wonder if this will take up a large portion of the conference. I’m curious to learn more; this feels promising.

On the other hand, I will be saving up a large portion of money.

I love the fact that Sony continues to bring us new and innovative tech. Keep it up guys! But before you give us the next “big thing”, can you please give us 3D Blu Ray playback for the PS4? Baby steps Sony. Thanks so much.

No Driveclub? I thought they were gonna support the VR headset. Thats why they had to go back to the drawing board. Well anyways its great news for Playstation nation. Ill buy it no mattter what. But it worries me a bit. they didnt show much of info. No release window? I guess coming holiday 2015. or even later. Not this year for sure

need any beta testers ? sign me up if you do
I doubt this will ever take off though , nobody wants another gimmick that doesn’t make the games more fun or playable or gives you a headache in 30 minutes of use

vXsaintXv said:

I think that this might cost anything in between 100-300 US dollars.

Ryumoau said:

March 18th, 7:21 pm

What is the point of this gimmicky headset? No wonder Sony keeps having financial problems, since they keep pouring money into needless accessories that no one wants like the ps move. :/

Daverost said:

March 18th, 7:22 pm

Who do I sign the check to? And why do I still own checks?

Ryumoau said:

March 18th, 7:22 pm

btw, where in the world is the psn store update?

ambsnake said:

March 18th, 7:23 pm

Really excited for this and how it will bring greater immersion to gaming.

jibjab79 said:

March 18th, 7:23 pm

Why 90 degrees? Why not 180 degrees? Or a front camera to map out your playing field, turn your house into a haunted house. Make obstacles in your home an object in the game. Able to take the headset outside for some FPS with the neighborhood kids.
Some real VR action, GSM or some NFS :p

Hooligantuan said:

And I thought Oculus’s Rift looked kinda clunky and unwieldly, then Sony reveals this lunk!

    Shu Yoshida said:

    March 18th, 7:51 pm

    Thank you for your feedback.

jibjab79 said:

Shadow of the Colossus would be epic in VR.

Blitzkrieg_exe said:

Finally, something to do with the PS4 camera I bought at launch!
I hope I can wear my glasses under this. If not, I guess it’s time to start wearing contacts.
The only thing that can stop me is a huge price point.

    Shu Yoshida said:

    March 18th, 7:52 pm

I ware glasses and have no problem using this prototype head mount unit :)

    Shu Yoshida said:

Should give one away on the PS Blog :P This WILL be awesome but show us some actual games + price before we can get tooooo excited. I hope this will work with some PS4 games..DriveClub, etc….. add it in to your main games SONY and SHOW people why it’s the future. Looking forward to seeing the demos.

Imagine a game like InFamous or DriveClub in VR………….. or hey, Uncharted 4… :P

eddypoe said:

March 18th, 7:33 pm

One would assume this would require more 3D content on the PS4?

Budapesti said:

March 18th, 7:34 pm

I wonder if this will be as popular as 3D gaming?
