Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE’s prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.
I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.
Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.
The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we’ve refined our vision for VR. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers that are as enthusiastic about this new medium as we are.
At GDC 2014 this week, attendees will be able to check out Project Morpheus in action at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

Oh shoot! This is incredibly superb. Do I need a playstation camera for this or I does it have motion sensors like the controllers?
I will definitely buy this one i don’t care how much it will cost lol. This is something i should have in the future. Im a super fan of playstation 4 and for me having this is an achievement. take my money now! lol

so….. this looks amazing. this really gives me a reason to go out and Buy a PS Camera. Also is their any plans on a Syphon Filter, or Legend Of Dragoon Sequel or Remake????? or anything of Sony First Party Exclusives that released from PS1 to PS2 Era??? i want to see some Major Sony Franchises from back in the day make a comeback on the PS4. But other then that. This Looks amazing,

I think this is going to be HUGE, and i hope to see a Persona game that uses this type of technology eventually, and I will wait as long as I need to for that to happen. Also, take as long as you need to get any glitches out. I hope this turns out to be bigger than I think it will, this is AWESOME!

Hey i am curious to know if the PlayStation 3d tv will have compatibility with the PlayStation 4 technology by using the PlayStation 3d tv’s dual screen capabilities? allowing for two headsets to be used.. also i am curious if that production has stopped for developers.. the idea was amazing and looked phenomenal.
What about Destiny? Bungie’s new mmo-fps game launching in the fall?
I cannot wait for this tech to hit the shelves. day one buy for me. This is THE next step in gaming and can’t wait to see all genres of games in all environments for me to immerse and experience myself. Thank you Sony for bringing to us! :D

Looks cool!I’ll give it a try as long as its not expensive. H oping Sony understands that price is everything .Psvita with memory card is to much money. Compared to tablets like Nexus7 with 32 gb built in.Psvita analogs feel bad too.
To me, (don’t take this personally I loved Playstation since i played games) but this just seems like another limit to games unless you have it. I don’t want to buy ANOTHER $300+ addition just to play some games that look good and play better than other games. If it does ever come out, It will be like buying another PS4 ( I’m just guessing here Sony has tended to surprise me these last few month’s). I have just never really seen a VR device take off and it’s always the same reasons why. At least make it an optional thing for all games that do make this compatible.
it is funny that sony is making a big deal about this “new technology”. This is not new and ihey are lucky they arent gettign sued. several years back Oculus tried to get the console companies on board with them and microsoft and sony both said no and now sony is developing the same thing and putting their names on it. Glad to see them going in the VR road but sad to see they didnt partner with Oculus Rift.
i am extemely excited about this. I was stoked to see sony get into vr because the possibilities are so endless. i am so hoping to see batttlefront with vr supporr. Or a new star wars rogue squadron type game with cockpit view vr support. Imagine piloting an x wing on the final run on the death death star with vr and a cockpit view. Call of duty and battlefield would be sick too. But i even see the possibilities in 3rd person games. Imagine playing the last of us or mass effect 4 and the like. The vr headset would act as a bad ass full view tv but then when you aim down sights it would zoom to a first person view as you fire at the enemies. Great job guys i hope to see this in the coming year and maybe some of these ideas are on the table. Day one buy for me. Cant wait to prorder.
And considering Occulus is now owned by facbook im ecstatic there was no partnership. Facebook will be the end of Occulus.

What every gamer has been asking for i know the gamer might not be inside of the game virtually but its going to be more realistic than anything we have experience before really looking foward to it .
the price on the ps vr shouldn’t be that high because im sure there will be xbox die hards willing to buy the ps for this instantly with that being said that’s more money in there pocket for greater features. The ps vr should just rumble when touching a wall. And could ps please upgrade the camera okay it has two cameras but doesn’t function well in the dark. Upgrade camera and set a affordable price and sell tons. Like I said you’ll need a ps for this vr so customers will buy what’s in demand plus camera and the move, think about it.
I think they should add an additional surround system on morphesus because a headset seems like it wouldn’t fit on to the prototype.

Looks very interesting project. I will love to see the final product. can not wait. this is the prototype, so the real product will be awesome. just one question I was reviewing and I heard that there is a gap in the prototype where you can see the outside is a little gap on the bottom of the prototype. hope that can be fix for the final project. Otherwise, very good …

What is the highest price it might cost
Can you make it look like the Nerve Gear from Sword Art Online because I heard that a SAO game is coming out so I want to be more motivated to play it and actually make my dream come true, I was so sad that season 1 finished so quickly waiting for season 2 I figured that I people actually were making technology like that so I searched google and I found this. I am going to camp at the game store for 1 day before launch LOL. I must have it!
Is the virtual reality Headset going to put are mind in the game like sword art online…… or is it going to be like just a smaller tv on your head?????????
my question is like TekuNaito will we be able to just play inside a reality in are heads and walk around like in sword art online if Sony is able to do that i will be buying it the first day it comes out if it is not like that i may not want to wast like 200$ on it
