Introducing Project Morpheus

Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE’s prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

Project Morpheus - PS4

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we’ve refined our vision for VR. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers that are as enthusiastic about this new medium as we are.

At GDC 2014 this week, attendees will be able to check out Project Morpheus in action at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

  • Goodbye real life!!

  • Shu you should run for President!!! Best Sony Exec in history in my opinion :)

  • Mr. Yoshida can you tell us when to expect the virtual reality headset. good luck on your project, from a ps fanboy :)

  • what happens if a kid runs into a wall while waring this due to it being sooo real (and that is coool) ???

  • It looks very nice! I would like to enjoy this accesory.

  • What is the diference between Morpheus and Oculus Rift?
    The second one already exist.

  • BTW, it will be like in case of sharpshooter. Many others products, and only one “original” product .

  • 3 Things I wish PlayStation 4 VR had:

-Some kinda glove with LEDs on the finger tips so you could move each individual finger in 3D space.

-Kinda wish it was a full helmet like SAO Nerve Gear with built in 7.1 virtual surround sound speakers.

-A new improve and more comfortable PlayStation move controller with a new navigation controller with the same LED on the tip to also be tracked in 3D space.

Games I’ll like to see using PlayStation 4 VR:

The only game I want is a MMORPG game, similar to Fantasy Star Online 2, RF Online, Blade & Soul Online, Oni Giri Online etc. it don’t graphically have to look amazing just run smooth and ton of content with deep customization classes and job change similar to Ragnarok Online. All this would birth in a new genre VRMMORPG! And would change gaming as we know it, if I was a game developer this would be the first thing I’ll be making it’ll have like a 80%+ chance of success! The dream! People from around the world logging into a virtual world.

  • I’m more concerned for those who wears glasses… Would it be uncomfortable, seeing how it fits right over the eyes?

  • Why oh Why dont sony give the consumer the choice to pay for Adobe flash player .Can’t watch youtube etc. We don’t want sony held to ransom . So why not leave the door open and let us decide. Then only Adobe can price its self out the market .Least its down to Adobe and not sony.Cumon Sony it aint rocket science get it fixed give the consumer the choice to pay ?/??/??/?/?/?/?/?/?/??

  • That is the coolest looking reality system ever and probably the best because its made by SONY!

  • Well, certainly the Oculus Rift will shape the future of games. If this morpheus headset follows the same path as PS4K, it’ll cost nearly 5.000,00 USD here in Brazil! Thanks, but no thanks! Don’t get me wrong, I love the PS4, it’s a great machine and I’ll buy one as soon as Sony stop with this abusive price policy in my country, but for VR a high-end PC is the best platform. I mean, the guys at Oculus already have 4K VR Headsets prototypes being tested internally. (anyone here have heard anything about screen door effect?) The PS4 cannot render any game at 4K in 2D, imagine in 3D…

  • Sony need a like button on these blogs to help theme see what their consumers likes more clearly.

  • when do you think the headset will be released for sale

  • Reminds me of Sword Art Online, if only it could get that far

  • This looks promising! I really hope developers get behind it. Based on the prototype the two improvements I would most prefer is an increased field of view and wireless if it doesn’t impair quality too much. As for the wireless feature if it could run in a way similar to remote play over the local network I’m sure there would be no problems.

  • Good job sony really good job!!

  • This Tech Has been years in the making. And for a prototype that is one of the coolest looking pieces of prototype hardware i have ever seen , I have already told my partner that i am getting one day one when they release , i am sold on the idea and will fully welcome this to my gaming collection,I have been playing PlayStation since the PS1 that was my first console and will be playing the living daylights out of it. Mr Shu Yoshida you are a genius and have a winner on your hands. BTW shut up and take my Money.

  • Amazing to see all the rumors and gossip being fulfilled with such a strong debut. The gaming media and developers alike (and future end-users like myself) are all thrilled.

  • Sony, I have always thought of you as the very best when it came to video games,(Microsoft can’t even try to compare to you guys) this not only proves me right, but you have just started a game-changing platform that(I hope) will catch the attention of everyone who doesn’t think highly of you guys. THANK YOU for re-assuring me of how awesome you guys are and PLEASE keep coming out with amazing new ideas and even more awesome games and PLEASE keep changing the world of gaming not just for me(and the rest of the Playstation Community) but for everyone involved in the world of gaming. You guys truly are THE BEST!!!!!

  • I recommend that Sony installs an “iris” eye camera for motion tracking of a persons eyes while working in conjunction with the playstation camera for motion tracking of the body.

Do Project Morpheus virtual reality headset have anything similar to this?

  • hmmm… this looks is looks awesome if only I had a time machine, cause i want this NOW!!!

  • What is the potential release date of this? 2014 or later?

  • MY MAN!!

  • SHU! I just yelled that. Sorry.

  • Shu – 2 questions. Will Project Morpheus be shown at E3, and are you looking for any Beta Testers? :D

  • This looks so beautiful, You just keep getting my money every day Sony, Love you guys

  • I wonder if they are going to make new motion sensors for Morpheus like playstation gloves ?

  • if it cost 250-300$… i’m in :D.

  • This is simply amazing that sony is making this it blows my mind. Just picture playing survival Horror games like the new one that is coming out, The Evil Within.

  • The front of the visor (the outside bit) should have two front facing cameras for stereoscopic vision that would/could work in unison with a touch pad on the front (the black part ) so that you could potentially use those in unison to put the unit on hold without removal. The two cameras could then overlay the users surroundings I’m real time. The touch input could also be used for switching camera/HUD modes in-game for example: switching from normal vision, to infrared, or night vision. Or in-game augmented vision like the glasses in heavy rain. I hope this suggestion gets heard, because I would probably buy project morpheusin a heart beat if it did this as well.

  • would it be like the oculus?

  • I will remain reserved on this project for now. I have high hopes, but really don’t want to be let down.

  • Whats the ETA to possibly be available for sale to the public???

  • 私は待つことができない!

  • This is just great! Hope it crushes the Oculus and comes soon! I’ll buy this even if it doesn’t have any games. We’re finally getting into the VR gaming age, can’t wait till there’s complete immersive gaming! And it’s so beautiful! You guys should make a PS4 that’ll have the same color as the prototype!
Keep it up Sony, you make, we believe!

  • This seems really next-level… I mean, really high-quality 3D that could even work for my mother (real3D in theaters just looks like double images for her), but ALSO 3 dimensional surround sound? Did I read correctly that this has head-tracking that also influences audio positioning?!? Amazing! The only other thing I’ve heard of that does that is the Headzone (by beyerdynamic?), but THAT doesn’t do height!

Will this use the TrueAudio processing from AMD and GenAudio to do the surround processing? In general, could/would 3D audio (including height) be available on the PS4? Really hoping to experience this!

  • This is evolution! I’ve been dreaming for this day like forever!!! You guys are just awesome. Be sure I’ll buy this (as long as RPG’s are made for it :P). Congratulations. This is the step of a new are in gaming :D. Sony rocks!

  • Hey shu, IGN is just reporting that Sony Worldwide studios is in trouble, emphasised of too many layoffs of staff at the moment, from the director of driveclub, to uncharted writer, to jack tretton, despite of the ps4’s success, should I be worried, am I still expecting great games on playstation just like the great pressure you’ve made during the ps3,2,1 era? Shu!! I want more games:#)

  • MR. Shu Yoshida ……IF YOU PLZ . DO U KNOW IF THERE IS A GOD OF WAR GAME COMING TO PS4 OR NO???
    THNK YOU

  • Very interesting. One thing I loved about the Sony PS3 wireless headset was that you could use it beyond just the console and use it with your home computer. I would love to see this VR used where you can change your environment while you’re on your computer at work. Think of the game Heavy Rain. He sits in his miserable office in the Police Dept and is now in the middle of a forest during Autumn. People would be using it in their cubicles everywhere. I think if you can do this, you’d expand your demo beyond just the console users.

  • cant wait for it!!!

  • Everything about the project looks promising! I watched the video and I’m still curious to see first hand whether this virtual experience will be worth paying for. You guys discussed issues with characters in game having issues distinguishing walls – distance from wall. Couldn’t you do something as simple as writing in arm lengths based on average height which only allows a character to walk close enough to a wall or object that they’d be forced to extend their arm to reach out and touch it. I’m sure you guys/gals have thought of everything. Excited to see where this goes.

  • This is a perfect opportunity to create some great MMO’s. Also, i would like to play God of War III first person view right now.

  • I’ve never been a huge fan of first person games. I think this product might change my mind. I think we’d all have flying cars a lot quicker if Sony took up the challenge. Good job.

  • I’m a huge PS person and this looks very exciting and but I’m still looking forward to when I can take my PS3 games and other PS titles with game saves and be able to access them along with my PSN download list on my PS4.

  • i would like to know if this can be set near or far sighted for individual eyes as i suffered from a head trauma and from one eye (right eye) i am currently farsighted from that eye, i don’t require to wear glasses though as i see perfectly fine with my left eye the issue is that my right eye is fixed dilated (stays dilated all the time) i really really really really REALLY!!!! want this product but i don’t want to suffer from migraines and future sicknesses ……thank you !

  • There will be online games for this?

  • Finally…The future of gaming is almost here. Now Playstation needs to create a real hover board.
