Dragon Fin Soup Coming to PS4, PS3, & PS Vita

Hello, we are Grimm Bros, nice meeting you all! We are Ash Monif and Randis Albion, long time friends and industry veterans. Over the last twelve months, we’ve been working with a small band of indie developers and today we’re proud to share with you our debut title – Dragon Fin Soup!

Dragon Fin Soup on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita

Dragon Fin Soup is part roguelike and part classic console RPG, with a persistent world and story. It plays like a mix of Chocobo’s Dungeon and Secret of Mana, and it comes with two main gameplay modes. Story Mode focuses on storytelling, character progression, and plays more like a classic RPG, while Survival Mode plays more like a Roguelike and features permanent death.

Dragon Fin Soup is a turn-based game — not quite like Final Fantasy Tactics or XCOM, but more like Shiren or Chocobo Dungeon where foes take their turn simultaneously with the player, allowing for more dynamic and fast-paced gameplay.

The world of Dragon Fin Soup is inspired by fantasy and fairy tales and is set on Asura, a giant space turtle. We are not trying to retell the stories, but we plan to twist and re-imagine these iconic tales. One of the main characters is Red Robin. Though she’s inspired by Red Riding Hood, she is quite different than the character you might remember from your childhood. She’s cheerful, but she’s also a raging alcoholic who makes her living as a bounty hunter and sword for hire.

A year ago, Robin lost her memory in a tragic accident. As she rediscovers herself and the world, she slowly learns more about her bloody past, the mysteries of Asura, and a twisted tale of betrayal and murder.

In Dragon Fin Soup we have day and night cycles, crafting, gathering, fishing, story missions, randomly generated quests and missions, wide-ranging locations and more. We also include 20 equipment slots for your weapons and gear, all kinds of abilities, magic and many other fun things.

Grimm Bros is a micro studio of five veteran developers. Our small team has been working on Dragon Fin Soup for a year now with the help and support of our amazing friends and family. We have three great programmers, a freelance composer, and one guy who is doing all the graphics, sfx, and design!

Bearing many awesome goodies Dragon Fin Soup is now on Kickstarter to help us raise more funds for polish and adding a lot of fun features. Please check it out and give us your feedback so we can make the best game possible! Also, keep an eye on our official site and Facebook page for more updates!

  • I appreciate the juxtaposition of the cute girl against the hard fantasy dragon. It’s nice to see the B.B. Hood style character being represented here, and it’s also great to see a striking female main character with a very dangerous appeal.

  • UHUHU VITA…. how amazing loook !! i will buy.

Sony Thanks for the Chruchnroll on PSVITA! you are the best!!! now i can watch animes on my psvita anywhere

  • Wow looking great, I will be looking forward to this on PS4.

  • Wow. Never seen a post with 51 replies. Looks like this was a blast to make. Maybe the download should come with a short tour of the facilities and an introduction of the team and their talents.

  • This looks amazing .. heading over to kickstarter to back now :D.

  • holy crap, you mentioned chocobo dungeon… Instant buy. :D

  • This looks great, like it was inspired by games like the earlier Zeldas and/or Neutopia. That pretty much puts it right up my alley! I’ll be picking it up on day one for sure! Here’s hoping that you guys can put together more winners! I’m definitely buying!

  • this looks amazing! can’t wait to play this on my Vita :D

  • Looks beautiful! Not into too many RPG’s..I usually don’t like having to “grind” and RANDOM turn based fights drive me crazy, but if it has a good story to match the great art direction in this game I might have to check this one out! Really love the art + use of colors.

  • Thank you Grimm Bros and PlayStation Blog for featuring Dragon Fin Soup and other indie titles in development! I hadn’t heard about this game yet, so I’m staggered to see how ambitious it is. I like what I see so far, from the female lead, to the unique take on fantasy, to the style of the gameplay, and the multiple PlayStation platform support is a great bonus.

Just bookmarked the Dragon Fin Soup website and plan on either supporting the game or buying on release. Looking forward to it!

  • This looks great! Beautiful graphics and awesome story! When does this come out?

  • Looks interesting. I’m glad that you are going to launch on all three. I like playing on my TV but this kind of game, my family might object, so it’s nice to be able to play on my Vita as well.

    Thanks!

  • This looks very cool. Count me in!

  • Looks nice, excited to play this on my PS3! I know it’s super early for this but any idea on what resolution you’re targeting for the PS3/PS4 versions? Also congratulations on reaching your Kickstarter milestone so early!

  • I’m not big on roguelikes, but I’ll be watching news on this. The art looks great and I hope the game is received well.

  • I haven’t played an RPG like this in years. It looks wonderful! If it has cross play withe vita/PS4 I will pick this one up. I love supporting the artist and developers in the indie community. Congrats and great job guys!

  • Looks awesome! I’ll be donating soon!

  • This game looks great! I am a long time rpg junkie, and I am very excited that there is fishing in this. A really enjoyed the fishing mini-games in Breath of Fire and Dark Cloud, and I hope this game will have the depth that those games had! I look forward to playing this on my vita soon. Now, back to FFX!

  • Weird name, but the game looks pretty good.

  • Sounds awesome! Guaranteed buy from me :)

  • It looks like you guys may have a winner on your hands. I will definitely keep an eye out for this one.

  • question if i put into the kickstarter can i get i sony version of the game and if its cross buy im all about it

  • Chocobo’s Dungeon was one of my first games on the PS1 and one of my most beloved games of all time. That said, this looks way better! It has all the elements that I liked about Chocobo’s dungeon(or so it seems now) plus more things that I’ve loved from other games: the various other skills/activities, night and day cycles, random quests and other diversions that change based on the day/night cycle. You guys have your hands on the pulse of the RPG community, I couldn’t ask for more out of a game. I can’t wait to get this for my Vita. Mentioning the Vita, thank you for supporting the under-appreciated handheld. It is truly one of the best platforms out there right now, yet somehow it gets almost no attention.

  • I just did kickstarter for the pet familiar. I want a snake named Frakir unless there’s some copyright problem.

    • Thank you!
After the KS we will open the forums and grand all backers access to a special subforum where we will present ideas and designs for the new pet and the backers will be able to contribute with their ideas and choose

  • Would like to eat into it. Never had Dragon?

I love Tactical RPG on a Handheld…..for sure I will get this somewhere along the road.

  • Mother of god, a proper Rougelike in polished form coming to the vita….My prayers have been answered….

In all seriousness, I LOVE This genre… roguelikes and love Arpgs, Srpgs and any rpgs for that matter. i have been wanting a proper roguelike on the vita for a long time as it stands now I had them on my psp and DS, but not on the vita (Blame Square Enix for not putting chocobos dungeon or some Azure Dreams)..

I love playing Dungeon Crawl Stone soup on the PC and was even going to start developing my own on PS Mobile when that came out, but there wasn’t enough resources availble and my programming chops are no where near the level they need to be, as there was no console like curses.h library or any way to port in C or C++ libs like libtcod ( yeah, I am a rougelike geek..lol).

So thank you so much for bringing this to all my favorite platforms and especially the vita! I will support you guys for sure!

  • love the art style and the gameplay sounds exciting! will support this on vita :D but the trailer though, really felt wierd optimus prime narrating that..hehe

    • Thanks!
Haha, that is funny, we do get that a lot about the voice!
“Autobots, releafe james3thebeast of all weapons!”

  • It’s beautiful, I’ll get it on Vita for sure

  • To clarify, this will definitely be coming for consoles? From the Kickstarter page, I was under the impression that it’d only be the case if it hit the $50k mark, so I was a bit hesitant at jumping in. I mean, I wouldn’t mind it on PC, but I’d like it better on a handheld.

    • No, we will definitely come! The additional porting costs are there for the additional features that we might create if he hit some of the stretch goals. Thank you!

  • I pledged. Make $50k happen please. I need this game for Vita! =)

  • When i read that Robin is a raging alcoholic i lost it hahahaha. It looks like a blast to play, and it’s an RPG! Count me in. :P

  • First time hearing about the game looks good!

  • Game looks really good, wouldn’t be able to back the Kickstarter, but definitely going to give it a try when it comes out.

  • A promising title for my PsVita, i would love finally a RPG like legend of mana.

  • Hella excited for this! Looks gooood!

  • You had me at “turn based”. Awesome art style and a great concept. My PS4 is so needing this right now.

  • First time backer. Looks amazing!! :)

  • Red Riding Hood. is this a Retail Game ?

  • Looking forward to this! Just backed you guys on KS.

  • LOVE the art and game-type and want it NOW!!!

But, before even seeing his comment, I had the same negative reaction to the game’s name as #28 above. Your valid reply to him aside, be prepared for others to likely make the same connection. As much as I’d want to play this, I’d still feel kind of icky having a permanent reminder in my trophy list of one of the world’s most abhorrently cruel animal-harvesting practices.

    • Thank you! :)
As we explained it has nothing to do with sharks or finning, and even if it might remind of
something it does not mean that it is supported or encouraged, it can mean quiet the opposite.
      Cheers!

  • Hi,
that’s a fine looking game you have there. I’m definetly going to try it out. I like the art and the description very much, I’ll see the video when I get home. (I’m still at work)
    Just one suggestion:
When I was reading your post exactly the part of the similarities to other titles, maybe it’s just me but I found more emphasis on that than what it actually should, I suggest focusing more on promoting what’s fresh and unique about your game.

Anyways, I’ve been following this on other gaming sites and I’m really interested on getting it when it makes it’s way to the vita..

Keep on the great work and more importantly: have fun giving us fun!

    • Thanks for checking out our Title and for your suggestions!
We plan to release more footage, game-play videos and info about our game in our future posts,
      this was our first announcement.

  • ohh i see sounds good. HI-5 for all the replies. well done.

  • I want a copy for Vita and PS4! Will it be cross-save? And how can I do that through Kickstarter now?

    • Thank you!
We will support cross buy, in kickstarter, after the campaign is finished there will be a survey where you can select the game for your platform of choice.

  • I would say this is better than chocobo’s dungeon, its nice to see a game similar to it as i loved it. It was easy for noobs of rougelikes to play and forgiving . But this looks awesome to good to pass up so day one buy .

    • Thank you very much! We also love Chocobo’s Dungeon, it is a great game, also Shiren the Wanderer, Torneko.

  • I am so happy this is coming out on Vita, I find myself gaming more on the go and the art looks amazing.

  • You have grabbed my attention. I like what I’ve seen. Good chance I’ll be buying this one.

  • Glads its on vita
    love the art style ;)

  • Looks like a fun, cute game.

  • Interesting! First time I hear about this, certainly not the last. Definitely my type of game.
