Bound by Flame: New Trailer Details Combat

Hi PlayStation.Blog readers! This is Walid, producer at Spiders Studios. With the upcoming launch of Bound by Flame — our latest game and our first RPG for PS4 — we decided to tease you a little more with our combat system, via an extensive combat trailer explaining its mechanics. Enjoy!

Bound by Flame features real-time combat that’s tactically deep, dynamic, and spectacular. Defeating your enemies won’t be an easy task, as every single monster and creature you’ll encounter has its own behavior, strengths, and weaknesses you’ll have to exploit in order to tear them into pieces.

You’ll be given access to three different skill trees to develop your character, each tree with its own unique abilities. The Warrior uses two-handed swords, axes, and war hammers to break his enemy’s defenses and inflict heavy damage, while the stealthy Ranger dual wields daggers to sneak up on his enemies for devastating backstabs — and then fights the survivors in fast-paced melee combat. The Pyromancer channels the fiery powers of the demon: hurl fireballs, light your weapon on fire, invoke flame spirits, and much more.

In combat, you’ll be able to toggle between the Warrior and Ranger stances in the blink of an eye, to adapt your tactics on the fly according to the enemies you’re facing. The rich bestiary of Bound by Flame will throw strong and varied foes at you; some of them might inflict poison, while others will use long range attacks. Even stronger enemies will try to tear you apart with powerful melee strikes.

Bound by FlameBound by Flame

Crafting plays a critical role in Bound by Flame. Nearly all weapons and pieces of armor are customizable, letting you improve their effectiveness while also adding beneficial bonuses that suit your fighting style. Adding a new pomel to a sword may greatly increase your damage, but it could also reduce your attack speed. Choose wisely before crafting new components to your equipment!

Your chosen companion will also be a decisive component for victory. Do you need a defensive healer, an unyielding tank, an aggressive sorcerer, or an elusive archer? Select carefully, because if you throw yourself into battle without any plan in mind and no ally to watch your back, you’re more likely to get overwhelmed by your opponents.

If you want to know more about Bound by Flame, don’t hesitate to visit our official website and the official Facebook Page. I’ll stop by from time to time to answer comments, so if you have any question, just ask!

Will there be any kind of hit reaction by the enemies? It just looks so clunky like this. It’s like you’re attacking a rock. There’s no satisfaction in hitting an enemy, and having it not react to your hits.

During a fight you have chances of breaking an enemy’s attack or having your attacks being broken. The opposite is also true; an enemy can be resistant to breaking and you can improve your character’s resistance. Being resistant means taking damage but not playing hurt animations and not being stopped, thus, sometimes, giving the impression that the enemy did not “feel” the blow. You can improve your “breaking” ability as well as your resistance through your skill tree and choices of equipment.

Looks like Borderlands 2 sans the humour… but given there is no BL planned for PS4 anytime soon this may be the thing to get.

What a pity , it’s not for Vita why? :( Sony where are you?

You guys seriously need to tweak the gameplay. The enemies doesn’t react to being hit at all, this is a HUGE flaw! It makes the combat feel completely weightless, for a game that’s focused on combat i am already seeing how boring I’ll feel just from watching this video, time is short but i Really you guys will act on it. It’s baffling that the development team feel it’s ok.

Looks great and I am impressed that there is so much customization. Also having a companion is going to be a lot of fun. I will buy this D1. However, to bring Bound By Flame to the next level I highly advise you to add hit/impact visual evidence. I can see blood and flame from the impacts but not much reaction from the enemies. Also, can you comment on why this new PS4 game is only $49.99? Can’t wait to play this game!

WORK WITH GOOGLE online, seriously I couldn’t be happier I work when I want and where I want. And with a little effort I easily bring in 50h and sometimes even as much as 80h…heres a good example of what I’m doing…………….jℴℬs35.ℭℴℳ

I don’t know if you guys changed anything since the last gameplay, but combat looks better (even though it still lacks the “feeling” of being hit sometimes).

Could you please tell me about the difficulty? Will it be at “Dark Souls level” of difficulty?

Will I be able to customize my companion’s appearance as well? I couldn’t watch the entire gameplay since I’m at work, so I don’t know if this is mentioned at the end.

Thank you!

The game will be difficult; we felt that the player had so many ways of defeating enemies (with the 2 fighting styles, the fire powers and all) that we made them stronger, more resistant and more dangerous. We really didn’t want it to be a walk in the park.
Still it’s not “Dark soul difficult” :)

    Companion’s appearance is not customizable.

Game looks really interesting and i hope theres a demo at launch for ps4 version. Also, will the digital version be cheaper than getting it on retail? i hope so.

RPG’s are my favourtie Ganre, so I will keep an eye on this, a little worried about the combat though, no impact when hitting enemies looked like you were slicing air at times. Is it 49 in Canada? Sony really hurting canadian customers with the price increase.

wow, this game looks really neat. i wasn’t really into the last trailer that was posted here, but this one has peaked my interest. it looks sort of like what gauntlet seven sorrows was supposed to be. i think this game will be in my collection when i get my ps4 =)

It looks like a lot of hard work has gone into making this game, and getting it out to eager players. I’m really looking forward to it.

Is there a specific reason for the ten dollar price reduction? I mean, hey, I’m not complaining – just curious! Appreciate your efforts to provide a much needed style and setting on PS4.

Is the game linear? How does Bound by Flame handle both character and story progression?

HobanKnight said:

April 11th, 12:55 pm

Seeing as I loved the atmosphere and gameplay elements of Mars War Logs, I am so buying this day 1. You guys make amazing games. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait til the game drops.

HobanKnight said:

April 11th, 12:56 pm

O also, you guys should figure out a way to make all your games playable on Vita. That would be even more dope.

@Walid Miled – Thanks for this! Had BbF pre-ordered for PS4 months ago, can’t wait for some truly good RPG action on the current gen.

Wish there had been a collectors edition of some sort though. :)

Thanks spider games for bringing this game to ps4 . I will buy it day 1 from the ps store just waiting for sony to allow us to pre order it. Guys cmon we gotta support these kind of developers who knows in future they might compete against the bigger dogs like skyrim and the witcher .

Walid, are there no plans to improve the attack animations/hit detection? In the last video you showed us, we noticed that when a stealth kill was executed, the daggers did not impale the target the way they were supposed to.
Honestly it is shady and dishonest how you just dance around these questions like it’s all part of the plan, saying enemies can be resistant to attacks. You know that isn’t what we’re talking about here. You know these attacks are not connecting properly. We just want to know if there are plans to fix this or if you are going to ship the game in this unpolished state. Don’t you think you have a responsibility to be honest with your customers?

man the trailers for this game looked so cool, but this combat looks kinda weak. It reminds me of WOW which is not a good thing. The Art for this game looks so rad but i think i’m gonna have to wait for it to hit the bargain bin before i can justify a purchase.

PGL163 said:

April 11th, 5:38 pm

Strange battle animations indeed. It reminds me of Risen. Also locations where the battles are look too narrow, like the fight is going in some corridor, where player moves from one enemy to another like in bad old beat em’ups.

PGL163 said:

April 11th, 5:43 pm

ll I think the game will be selling good enough, because of lack of other big rpg’s.Maybe they hurry up to release it that’s why it looks unfinished.

The_Bunn said:

April 11th, 8:06 pm

You show us different classes and a party attacking an enemy. and yet the game is single player (at least on wikipedia).

What a waste. I’d get it for sure to play with friends otherwise :/

looks good but like the soccer games on ps4 I’m not gonna buy unless i can download it off the psn, i refuse to buy discs for the ps4, download only for me, also i would love to play a soccer game on my ps4 but discs can break or be stolen more easy than my ps4, so i rather download only an i thought sony said all ps4 games will be downloadable to but i don’t see any sports games on psn?

poor guy, making him say all that stuff without a breath at some points. I think I got a really good idea about everything in the game just because of how long the trailer was but it wasnt very entertaining because of that just very informative though the best lines you gave him though was “the punishment for failure.. is death” he said that exceptionally

Not that great of a game =/ Played ~6 hrs and i could not get into the story at all. Character’s eyes are always looking the opposite way they are suppose to be talking, and sometimes facing the completely wrong way as if they are talking to a wall. As far as the fighting goes, I was easily slain at lvl 4 by a monster in the pain part of the game. I had to put it on easy mode to take 4-6 hits. If i put myself in ranger mode, i felt that they could bounce hit me before i got off a simple combo. If i were doing a simple action such as move over an item, i had to completely stop in order to hit the X button to pick up the item. Just not a smooth game. Overall a 1/5 rating on PS4.
