PS4 Update 1.70 Coming Soon, Introducing SHAREfactory

Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.

As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.

Introducing: SHAREfactory

The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:

With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.

Share With the World

Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!

Play as Soon as the Game is Released

Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.

As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

We’ll have more information to share about new upcoming features for this major system software update as the release approaches, so stay tuned!

  • My ps4 crashes from time to time. It would be nice to see a more stable system. Also it needs more options, like in comments below, i wont repeat them all but new themes would be nice, also an option to totally hide my real name, I don’t even want to see an option that allows me to chose do I want or don’t want to show it. An option to switch off the light on the controller to save battery. Also do something about the charging mode, because the ps4 controller only charges while the ps4 is fully running and not is stand-by mode. Also I cant use my ps4 while the controller is charging, when it charges, a question mark appears while I play. Also it would be nice to have an option to change the theme to ps3 because it was better. Yeah, stuff like that :)

  • Great that the PS4 will become even more awesome

I would love to this in a future Update

    – media playback (music, video, pictures)
    – means of Organizing games into sub categories for easier browsing
    – pause downloads
    – PSN name change
    – dynamic themes
    – bring down steps of switching accounts, turning off controller
    – option to remove or disable apps we may not use e.g Video Unlimited
    – notifications for friends getting online, just like on ps3.

  • the patch allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video. does this mean that we will be able to add and play music files from the ps4 now as well?

  • Was so hoping that Twitch archives would be snuck in at the last minute. Guess not :\ Seems like such a trivial feature to add as all the hard work is being done on Twitch.tv itself. Fingers are still crossed, but it’s not looking good…

  • Will we be able to put our own music/photos/videos through a usb drive???

  • When will we be able to upload our own media on the dashboard?

  • lst me just PAUSE a download please… its a simple thing, PS3 had it day 1.

  • With the ability to export video, I assume (and hope) this means we can export pictures as well? I am not aware of a way to get HD photos onto my computer from my playstation and I hope this is a way to

  • i’d really like the availability to upgrade a sub account to a primary account. I’m 30 years old and had to abandon my account when the ps4 came out and start completely over with all my trophies. For something that seems so simple i dont understand the complication here?

  • Great update. Maybe now we can get external hard drive support. Fingers crossed.

  • Hi! I don’t understand why there’s no way to upload directly to YouTube, hope some day (soon :P) it will.

BUT! And is a big “but”, i honestly LOVE what you are doing here. At the begining when i saw the PS4 reveal, i thought that i will never use that “Share” button. “Why bother?” I said to myself.

Now, this SHAREfactory thing and the Photo Mode in inFamous prove me wrong, very wrong. And i thank you for that. Those two plus the streaming on Twitch are awesome features, and i’ll be looking forward to what’s next.

Thank you, from a loyal PSFan (since the original “PSX” :P)

  • this is awesome, just wondering what other features are coming. When will we be able to set users as favourites and get notified once they sign onto the ps4? Also, dynamic themes would be cool! and maybe some NHL avatars on the ps store would be awesome too! and maybe when you hit the ps button you hear the game in the background instead of hearing the xmb music

  • I am very glad to be able to switch off HDCP and the ability to save my footage to a flash drive. I love sharing my experiences with the gaming community and I felt like my PS4 was getting neglected in this department because I had to upload it to Facebook and then download it to my PC from there.

Is there any chance that the PS3 will be getting the switch off HDCP feature at some point in its life or is that a lost cause. I currently have to use Component Cables to record and the quality suffers in my video.

  • Excellent first update guys! Very much looking forward to being able to send videos to my USB and upload them to something other then Facebook!

Some quick questions if you could answer.

Any chance we get uncompressed 1080p screenshot capability in the future?

Any chance we will be able to take native framerate / resolution videos in the future?

    Thanks!

  • I guess “soon” implies less than two weeks. The Playstation twitter just confirmed the update releases sometime on April 30th.

  • How about an update on the Vita to let us re-download those PSOne Classics that you unlocked a few days back? :\

  • Need more control over audio output. I can’t use Dolby Pro Logic II on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu etc., even when the program is 2.0. This isn’t a problem on PS3.

  • How about the ability to custumize everey aspects about it such as the background the wave in the background the the borders around game icons headers you know give us the options to change the designs of the ui without actually changeing the ui just wanna change the colors to everything on the design

  • Love to see big update for the PS Vita to fix some problems with the apps like Friends (Friends list half the time won’t even up and it says i don’t have any friends at all. Only way to fix it; turn vita off for hour and hope it doesn’t do it again.), System moves slow by taking time to open up the apps when changing vita memory card out, fix bugs with OS sometimes lagging up, fix browser to stop reloading pages for no reason, and to much to name down.

Hope to hear more game coming to PS Vita; new IP’s and better support for Vita. :)

Vita rules with iron fist! :)

  • Yes… We get it… Use a USB and the possibilities are limitless. But thanx for continuously avoiding the question. Maybe you just don’t understand that not all of us wanna have to export anything to USB to share. This is next gen right? Everything is supposed to be seamless and intuitive and convenient. Using a USB does not set the ps4 apart from anything, it makes me feel like I’m using my PC. We want to be able to share to you tube… Period. Either tell us to blow it out our rears and that it ain’t gonna happen… Or GET IT DONE. I’m sick of the lack of features on the ps4 that were promised at launch… Why are we still waiting for things like customizable XMb and suspend features. You can at least get us a YouTube partnership.

  • Hi, personally I think this is great it’s like Sony have given us a new toy to play with In a nursery :) don’t be pressurised by people wanting YouTube app up loaders or something they just gotta be patient and plus is it ok if we can maybe shift and organise our apps and games at the home screen it’s just I want to organise it :) even if it’s just a shift button which shifts the app to the right ;3 your doing a great job Sony. You care for your community unlike some un named rival console … Who rhymes with eggs bot bon

  • Thanks for respecting your users Sony, the HDCP toggle is much appreciated. I will also make heavy use of the ability to preload games.

  • What is the proper way for submitting feedback>

  • In terms of the first couple comments, we want to be able to personalize the ps4 UI. Everyone has the same blue background and it’s very boring. I want my ps4 to reflect me, which will be different from how others personalize theirs. Also allow the UI to be shown on stream so people can see what you’ve done. We also need to be able to organize the games. 20+ games and I have to scroll through everything one by one.

Avatars I’ve purchased on the ps3, does not show up on the PS4 avatar selection, that needs to be fixed.

When streaming, if messages, trophies etc show up in notifications, the black bar blocks the screen. Privacy I understand that, but it does not need to be THAT big of a bar, literally half the screen is blanked out and it’s very annoying as a disruption to our viewing experience.

When turning on the PS4 using the DS4 that has been fully charged when offline while leaving the cable attached. The sub menu (holding the PS button), the battery bar on the screen shows a “?”.

Also, if the usb cable attaching the DS4 to PS4, is set to standby with power charge set to on. Once the console goes to standby, the DS4 (and presumably other devices) will not charge until it is unplugged and plugged back in.

  • will there be an update that lets the playstation 4 operating system sort applications by the user and also .mp3 support? Thanks!

  • “No, thank you.” on the Facebook-exclusive sharing.

  • Did you guys bump this, just so you could say you are listening to the mp3, Youtube and DLNA requests?

Jesus, I see the same only reply posts in red about how sharing affects their life.

Talk about a slap in my face and intelligence…

  • Jesus, you literally did take an old blog post and repost it so you didn’t have to answer about mp3 and DLNA with awkwardness.

  • At what point can we expect an update on Yoshida’s statement on mp3 and DLNA last Fall?

  • can you guys do something about the horrendous chat system if i have to choose between listening to my game or to my friends you guys are doing something horribly wrong. PLEASE add some sort of volume control feature that actually works much obliged.

  • I would really love to upload to youtube and watch youtube as i youtube but i can’t upload in good quality and i don’t have a usb and don’t know where to buy one

  • Wow i see you responding to almost everyone that comment.i agree with kazeeternal. add all that features.i got something in mind please tell time warner cable to do a time warner app like the xbox 360 got.

  • This update is going to be great!!! Thx Sony. Keep always improving your system. Love my PS4. #4theplayers

  • A great suggestion, I’m not sure if it’s a feature but really quiet. But you should be able to hear your whole party in streams together. I know sometimes my friends hear others in my stream but they sound quiet. Would be nice for co-op games if you could hear them better. Would make watching streams so much more entertaining.

  • No DLNA yet? Soon?

  • I wish the PS4 interface allowed us to revert to the classic cross media bar format. I hate the cluttered interface of the PS4. Also please bring dynamic themes back. It would be great to allow downloaded or saved video clips as a background theme too. Please also enable 3D for bluray movies. A youtube app and Pandora app would be great too.

  • To everyone happy about this update, good for you. As for me, Sony you have done nothing to the PS4 that’s make me want one. No vertical stand or blu-ray remote yet and if or when you make a remote. Make it thin like the PS2 remote and not like the fat PS3 remote. Make a white PS4 sooner then later. Sony you have taken once step forward with this system and two steps back. The Last of US and Beyond: Two Souls and Gran Turismo 6 should have been PS4 launch titles. The updates we the people have been asking for falls on deaf ears. But you don’t hear me though.

  • And yesterday still no way to play our own music while gaming. Stop strong arming the overpriced music service and add this basic functionality please,

  • I like to see Google/Youtube support at being able to upload to them like Facebook. As for PS4 background themes, it be kind of nice to be able to use the ones we have for PS3. But if not, I like to see themes that really change how the PS4’s UI looks and be able to sort things on the PS4 UI (meaning sort games and sort the apps that are install).

  • Finally got a PS4 and am really excited. The PS4 is gorgeous (Infamous second son is a great looking game that is really responsive). However, I am a bit disappointed to see the significant list of meaningful things that I could do on my PS3 that I cannot do on my PS4. I have 50+ PS3 disk based games, 50+ PS2 games, and 40+ PS1 games. None of these will play on my PS4. I understand that there would have been engineering challenges when designing the PS4 to make this happen and accept that true backwards compatibility is a feature that is not going to come, but it is still frustrating that I will have to keep out multiple consoles when I have never had to do that in the last 20 years of having Sony Playstations. Although the thing that bothers me more (because it was preventable) is that whereas my PS3 was my music hub on which I stored 100+ CDs, and most of my family home videos (from a Sony camcorder) that could be viewed with ease on my big Sony TV and sound system, the PS4 will not allow this. The PS4 won’t even play a CD. This is a HUGE deficiency for me. So while I love the potential in my new PS4, I still have many many reasons to continue using my PS3 and comparatively very few reasons to turn on my PS4.

  • Account name change would be good, my kids are getting older and the names they have from back on the ps3 are no longer what they want. Problem is, you change you lose all of your trophies.

Beyond that however, give us the ability as master account holders to change sub accounts to master accounts when we want. Even if it’s a one and done deal, the parents or master account holder should have that capability.

  • I’d like a proper YouTube app for PS4 were we can use the virtual keyboard to type the name of the video.

The ability to change our SOE/PSN account name would be great too.

  • Can i upgrade my PS4’s HDD to 1t?

  • @593 DoTheKiller91: Yes you can. I did at launch

  • None of these features look interesting in the slightest to me unfortunately. Any chance of any of the following features?
    1. Folders. It’d be nice if we could stash away a lot of the useless tiles the system has. Would reduce clutter and make it look clean.
    2. Interface customization. Everyone’s asking for dynamic themes, but even something as simple as changing the color of the main interface would be a good start.
    3. Clearing notifications should be automatic when looked at. As it stands, they just sit there. I recieved a friend request two months ago, but the notification sits there eternally. It doesn’t show up as a number on the title bar, but go into notifications, and there it sits, even when the request was dealt with long ago.

  • 4. Light dimming on the controller when not in use. Right now, it’s constantly reflecting off the screen in a dark room. Annoying.
    5. Adjustable tile sizes in the store and elsewhere. At the moment, it’s taking up far too much space per tile and not maximizing information given to the user. There’s also a lot of poor use of empty space. A tiny, slick-looking download monitor on the main interface would be one example of good use of this space. Perhaps even optional widgets. That would be fantastic.

  • We need a “follow” button for viewers on PS live otherwise there is no point in streaming from there.

  • I liked the new stuff! however I am waiting for an update that uses the entire bandwidth, and has a decent download manager!
    Tank´s ^^

  • Only one question will the accuracy of your share clips be better sometimes when I hit share button shows me content from over a hour ago but nothing recent even though I have been playing the whole time.

  • What’s up Sony PlayStation!? Hey quick question guys; will you guys be considering having a friend sign in or off notification feature? It would be great to see my friends sign on without having to check. :) the Sharefactory looks awesome guys, thank you so much.
