Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

I would like to have the most basic feature I’ve seen in the internet… the “pause a download” feature, I know that for people who have high speed internet it’s not a big deal but trust me, when you live in a country where the top speed is 4 MB (the “most affordable”) and you do not live alone in your house, it becomes a big BIG BIGGITY Deal, I know you guys are listening so please make it happen, now that we’ll be getting pre-loading I want to go all digital but that pause feature is what it’s missing.

Any news on the share button (video recording) bug. It stops recording after the first 15 mins…which means if I do something cool after my first 15 mins of gameplay the video clip of the “cool thing” I did is lost. The feature should constantly be recording during while you play and when you press the SHARE button it should record and save your previous and most recent 15 minutes of gameplay. FIX THIS ASAP, thanks
ABOUT DYNAMIC THEMES:
1) The themes should have their own music or sound effects.
2) The themes don’t necessarily have to have artwork. For example, imagine a rain theme that has a picture of rain and/or dynamic water droplets with the soft sound of pouring rain instead of the default UI music.
Another example: An Infamous Second Son theme that is black with animated neon effects in the background and tracks from the great Infamous soundtrack playing in the background!
3) Sceensaver mode: After a period of inactivity in the UI, the the Theme takes over the screen completely so you can see the full animated or static artwork and enjoy the music/sound effects. The Amazon FireTV for example has an amazing automatic screensaver mode!

If you double tap the share button you can start recording at anytime a feature i had no idea existed.
We should be able to use the trackpad like a, well, trackpad while in the browser.

The most awesome things that you do in video game happens spontaneously. You cannot record things that happens spontaneously with this method, the current method requires you to anticipate when you gonna do something WORTH RECORDING.. Xbox does this better (even tho I don’t like the Xbox)
Yes sony you the bomb I love all the hard work you put into all of this I actually want to work with you guys and I miss TESTER that was an awesome show that I have enjoyed on the sony side of things I watched all three seasons of it and loved every single one of them it made me fill like I can work with sony and become that awesome
Nice update, but darn; I was hoping for name changing on PSN. There are couple of names on my psn that I want to change.
I hope they make it so you can turn off the controller when Netflix or Hulu are running soon without it pausing so that we don’t have to kill the controller to use those apps.
Have to MS is doing a better job with firmware support/updates. Just release the damn thing already. Zero need to hype it over a month and multiple posts.
I don’t know if you guys will read this but I will throw my hat in the ring. First, off awesome job on the update, I’m personally excited and thanks for listening to the fans. :) I do have one thing that I think would be helpful for the PS4 if implemented. Know how you can instantly go to a party chat or game invite during a game if you press the PS button? Why not have this useable for all updates? More so for messages or friend invites. I know it seems small but I like the ease of the UI that the console has and I think this would help a bit more. Just my opinion anyway. :) Thanks for listening if someone reads this.

True they should add a feature that records every 15 minutes but deletes the oldest after 3 recordings. That way if anything happened you’d be able to just press share and check the recording. Would save a ton of space if it auto erased non saved recordings after every 3 15 min recordings.
Wishlist
1. Ability to change PSN name, and not just once. Perhaps limit it to once or twice a year?
2. I see lots of requests for MP3 support. It’s all nice and good, but it’s not 2000. The MP3 is the “standard” for listening to music in 2014 for some reason, but it’s highly compressed. It’s time to move up to lossless formats. Please add support for FLAC and other uncompressed music formats. Our storage drives and cards are huge so there’s no reason to be limited to strictly compressed formats that save on size but compromise the sound and quality of the music.
3. Allow us to delete games from our trophy list that we decided we didn’t like but now have games sitting at 0% + Maybe set a max percentage where a game can be removed.
4. For god’s sake let us delete items from the download list. There’s too much clutter and I don’t really want to scroll anymore thru the 40 avatars I downloaded on accident while playing Journey.
Sigh… Okay, that stuff is cool I guess… But how about some basic functionality…
MP3 and CD playback, maybe?

That’s a really good idea. It’s frustrating when you do something awesome and want to share it just to find out out the clip that was recorded happened 3 hours ago and the thing you really wanted to share is forever lost.

Also, I’m aware that the PS4 focus is on games. Yet there’s voice commands. So I’d like more commands, more functionality in them.

We need a way to organizeour games some ps4 home screens are jam packed already and what about a vita connection of some sort
This update news made me so happy! It would be cool if when MP3 support does come, I can change the song from the playstation app. And dynamic themes would be cool too :3

So does the next update have a share (bug?) feature fix? I am specifically talking about when you try to share a moment you did something amazing press the share button and look at the saved thumbnail picture to see that it recorded the right thing but later see that the thumbnail preview is correct but the entire clip is random gameplay from like 2-4 games ago.
I think the UI can use an update as well. I feel that there it can be done in a much simpler and nicer looking way.. The DS4 for example.. It takes so much longer to dig in a turn it off than it was on the PS3

Heck, beyond changing your PSN ID, it’s much more important to allow changing a sub-account to a primary one. My little sister’s seventeen, but still a sub-account to mine because she was too young for a primary when her ID was made. For consoles with decade-long planned lifespans, this permanence has been short-sighted.
Here’s my wish list:
– The ability to organize the Library with Folders similar to the Vita.
– More reliable capturing. It isn’t always a given that hitting the Share button will give a clip of the thing that I want to share.
– A more direct way to access my Share library
– More areas where the clock and battery life indicators are visible and seeing if the controller is fully charged via a pop-up.
– When deleting a piece of Share content, to not have the cursor reset to the top of the menu, and/or being able to Preview an item whilst in the Delete menu.
– When sharing something to Facebook, the ability to adjust the Privacy settings as we’re uploading it.
– The ability to upload multiple pieces of Share screenshots/video at once
– A disc-drive icon on the Home screen so we can tell if a disc is in the drive. The icon could also use a Blu-Ray’s icon like the PS3.
– Volume amplifier for video
-Using the D-Pad to scrub through video
– This one’s kinda odd, but allowing full DS4 support on PS3
Also, are you able to say what the image quality will be like, such as how much compression the image will have and what the resolution is?

this is cool and all, but i feel like it’s really an update only geared toward people trying to make youtube game commentary videos, and since i’m not one of them, i feel i’m really getting nothing from this update unless there is more than what’s talked about here.
I’m still mostly just waiting on when you will allow external content like movies and such to be downloaded onto the PS4 like we can with the PS3. I use my playstation as my main entertainment device, and it sucks that I still have to go back to my PS3 to watch a lot of my movies that I have downloaded onto there.
By far and away, my biggest problem with PS4 is game storage. The fact that external game storage is not supported and the fact there seems to be zero plans for it is quite upsetting for two reasons. One: BOTH of the two competitors either already offer external game storage or will be very soon. With Playstation not following suit, it just doesn’t feel right. But the BIGGEST reason why external game storage is so crucial is because of the fact that the largest hard drive that can fit in a PS4 while still being compatible is a meager 1.5TB HDD. That seems like a lot but for a person like me who buys a lot and I mean a LOT of games, this will not last me an entire console generation; not with these enormous file sizes on PS4. This is a CRUCIAL feature that hopefully gets implemented before our 1.5 TB HDDs start filling up! Thankfully that should be a couple years down the road but the sooner you guys support external game storage, the better. Thanks guys, and I REALLY hope to god you guys have paid attention to this comment because I know a LOT of people out there feel the same way as me.
First really awesome update guys. Thanks so much for making me have trust and faith in Sony Playstation Products. Luv my PS4. Scott I was wondering if the pre order game feature to download would it be for SCEA worldwide studios only games or any Day1 Digital game. Second question was the SHAREFactory clip lengths? It can only make 15 min edited clip or more than that? The Stickers idea is awesome but would there be support to update stickers frequently or would be able to buy new ones in PSN Store? Nice upgrade! I hope someday I can change the psn id and country. There are always games and dlcs not available in my region but I really want to play them…

i kept asking myself when will we start getting more features on ps4 that we was promised and here’s one of them. i do have a Q: i know you can’t give me a month or time or nothing but i have 3 simple questions. 1. is it true there will be a 4K update for the ps4 to be able to play 4K movies. 2. if so will it be true 4K or will it be a cheap rip off like the fake 1080p on the ps3. and 3 if the 4K update come’s out will there be 4K games cause the 4K TV’s right now are cheaper then my old 1080 was when i got it. i hope so cause if this happens it would blow our mined’s if you can only answer 1 of them or whatever that’s fine. i know you can’t give up to much info about stuff. i just want to at least know if it will play 4K movies at least. because i got me a 4K TV cause i herd it will. so i’m hoping it’s true so i know i didn’t wast my money. and think’s sony you guys are cool and keep up the good work. thumbs way up peace.

The most basic functionality missing is the ability to start and pause downloads. Thats the most basic requirement and PS4 downloads multiple files at a time wothout priority and chokes the network. Dont understand how Sony missed such an important feature.

Sounds like quite an update! It makes me feel like more than just a consumer when there are updates revolving around us, the Gamers, instead of just fixing issues that might come up. Keep up the good work!
also i forgot something to ask. i remember at e3 when they said that you can pause a game and join someone else that’s online on your friends list with out any load screens and just jump right in and start shooting on like kill zone or battlefield 4. yet i have not been able to do this at all. it always says i must close the app i’m using now to play the other game and i always got to wait for it to load and i was told that you can use the camera to put your face on stuff like battlefield or drive club ect. will this be an update or am i just missing something?
Just a quick question regarding mp3s are we ever going to be able to rip a cd to the hard drive to play our music? And sorry if this has been answered already.

Could we get an option to record party chat because right now you can only record your own voice so its kind of stupid to post videos where you are the only one talking a lone… It could be mp3 file or just included to the mp4 file many of my friends wants this option as well and we would appreciate this a lot! With this option we could make even better videos easier right now we have to have 2 headsets on and laptops that we can record our audio from skype… thanks for your time!

Ok so I’ve always wondered why Sony decided to go along with facebook regarding the sharing feature … not everyone use facebook and my friends on PS4 aren’t the same on facebook and vice versa.
For me those are 2 distinct universes and it would have made sense to DIRECTLY SHARE with my psn friends via the What’s New.
The playstation ecosystem is strong and wide enough to support its own social platform.
As for the upcoming update , it’s more than appreciated! but there’s some major feature to work on guys, as listed numerous time above:
– media playback (music, video, pictures)
– means of Organizing games into sub categories for easier browsing
– pause downloads
– PSN name change
– dynamic themes
– bring down steps of switching accounts, turning off controller
– option to remove or disable apps we may not use e.g Video Unlimited
– notifications for friends getting online, just like on ps3.
It’s astounding to me how rude some of you are. Like typing in all caps while being insulting or just obnoxiously snotty is acceptable behavior, much less will get you results. What a laugh. Also you all should know that Sony has little to nothing to do with the progress of a youtube app, that’s google’s call. Further, the PS4 came out not that long ago and we all know every Playstation system takes a little while to really get going and when it does it’ll be awesome, so chill out, check your privilege and stop whining like little babies who want more ice cream.

Got the PS4 for 4 month now and i am really dissapointed so far, dont get me wrong it plays games ok although there is noting out at the moment that impresses me but hey thats the ill fate of an early adopter.
Its an real shame that mediaplayer isnt an option, does Sony really hope we’re gonna hop to Netflix to watch old stuff?
Although the One has its drawbacks 2 its becoming more and more and option for me now.
