PS4 Update 1.70 Coming Soon, Introducing SHAREfactory

Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.

As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.

Introducing: SHAREfactory

The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:

With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.

Share With the World

Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!

Play as Soon as the Game is Released

Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.

As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

We’ll have more information to share about new upcoming features for this major system software update as the release approaches, so stay tuned!

  • Great update! I couldn’t help but notice it said in SHAREfactory it said “use your own original music”. Does that mean we are getting MP3 playback? Need a reply on this.

    Oh and I second these:

    DLNA playback
    Name change
Delete unwanted trophies – DELETE not hide
    Dynamic themes
Folders to sort apps, games, etc.
    PS1/PS2 classics support
    Notifications of friends hopping online

    Please consider these.

  • Its sad i loved my ps3 and now my new baby (ps4) is here and im telling you ps3 had a affair with another consol. Cause im seeing red wen thier should of been blue. This baby is missing all the genes from its ps3 parent. Take away the things that helped make the ps3 great im not getting that move by sony oO and lets work on other features that work around this youtube sharing strait from ur ps4 request lol starting to make nintendo moves sony Snap Out Of It

  • No Cause that would let you pirat songs off the web and just like the movies thier not having it. remember this a game machine , you got get a xbox 1 if you want a multi task system that supports all those wantd features from the ps3 lol

  • These are key things.
-Friend list grouping: The ability to group friends as favs, or MMO friends. My KZ Crew etc.
-Friend Notifications: I wanna know when my friends are online and offline, can you make groups for people you care to see online and going offline? Or get a screen where you can check and uncheck who you wanna see. Ohh and notifications is a friend starts playing the same game as you. Or joins your session.
-Customize UI, even if it’s just colour FOR NOW. I’m not a blue fan, I’d prefer a Green background and get annoyed with the blue.
-DLNA and Media is a given.
-Having games still running while in sleep more, pause and resuming games feature. Was really looking forward to it.
-Being able to pause and resume downloads at will.
-I don’t care if this is about PS4, I WANT MY CRASH TITLES TO WORK ON MY VITA ALREADY, damn… The world is playing it but not me, one of my all time favs Crash 2 and CTR. Every week since PSOne support over a year ago came to live, I’ve literally been praying it says it’s added to the Vita on a PS Store update. Please
-Is this the update with better quality streams?

  • Great updates…

…but what I really want hasn’t been done yet.

    1. When will 3D Blu Ray playback be enabled?

    2. When will streaming 5.1 surround sound support be enabled?

Both are things that the PS3 had, so what’s taking so long? It’s been months….

  • I have been looking forward to this day since the release of the PS4. I can now capture my footage onto my PC to add my own flair to it. Thank you Sony for listening on this feature. I also love that I can put the videos I already have recorded on my PS4 to a thumb drive.

  • These features are great keep them coming, thank you so much for listening and please don’t stop. (Plex App)

  • When you test Internet speed on the PS4, it only gives you a fraction of the result you get when you test to PC. First why is this, and second is there any plans to do anything about it? Thanks – the Eggman

  • Got my ps4 on day one and here i am browsing the web wishing i had a great new online game 2 play lets see what every1 else playing hmm titanfall forza well thats ok Cause we ps4 players we got ._._._._. We ._. Got hmm what do we got Cause we sure dont have what we did have and every time 1 of these features or mentioned thier dodged, dont that tell everyone something ? Ask about – Mp3 support – youtube app and youtube sharing strait from ur ps4 , – full br movie support and watch em ignore the question or blow you off like saying thats y you can transfer your vid to anothier system and it can post to youtube or whatever so lame

  • Great News! Still waiting for some news about (another user already said something about it):

    – Media Server DLNA Streaming support
    – The option to listen to music from the harddrive or DLNA while playing other software (not limited to just Music Unlimited)
    – Organization options for Friends list (the ability to create groups of friends (like folders) and have a best/favorite friends list)

    – PLEASE! BETTER UI AND ORGANIZATION FOR THE LIBRARY SESSION.
(All digital games poster/icon must be in the library even if is not installed. I bought a lot of digital games but I have to uninstalled it because the hdd size limitation and sometimes I dont remember which one I bought. Its very complicated to find on Account Management as well… would be nice to separate what we bought of what we download it for free… something like Steam)

(Game poster with description about the game with picutres and trailers into it would be nice for better view)

  • As a side note is their any word on being able to be shown as offline if we don’t want our friends list to see us online? Sometimes I like to just sit down and play a relaxing single player game or mode without everybody asking me to join multiple games.

  • Yey… Waiting for this update…

  • Uh, why are you sticking with Facebook? Let us upload to Youtube or Vimeo or somewhere else through the PS4. Exporting seems like such a half step because that won’t show up on my PS4 activity wall.

I don’t know if you guys at Sony have noticed but due to the privacy features on Facebook and people not wanting to spam their family with inFamous videos the PS4 activity wall is littered with blank thumbnails and broken videos. It’s pretty much rendered the sharing button useless for a lot of people.

So while sharefactory looks awesome it seems you are missing the point of what people really want… IE NOT FACEBOOK.

  • Does this mean that we’ll finally be able to import our music to the HDD? And how about a custom soundtracks feature? I REALLY need this for upcoming racing games, like Project CARS and Driveclub. MusicUnlimited is too expensive and far too buggy, unreliable and lacks selection to fill this void.

  • i find it hard to believe this sharefactory stuff was more important to get out than local media playback!

you also said that HBO Go was coming “soon”

Spotify / YouTube / ESPN apps please!!!

  • Love everything about the ps4 and is one go the greatest gadgets that i have… now i would like some stuff in there, like a youtube app like the ps3 have already but i guess people would be complaining about letting them to upload videos to youtube right there instead of using a USB for it. another thing is the trophy list. if i had a long time not playing a game and i am trying to see whats the trophy that i need to plat it doesnt bump it up to the top like the ps3 and sometimes i spend a lot of time trying to find the game trophy list. i think it would be great that when you play a game and you are getting trophies for that game that it gets bump to the top right away with the game. i hope you guys understand what i am trying to say. english as second language.

  • Ah, the old Sony trademark of coming “soon.” Ha ha I don’t understand why it’s so hard to say something like “We’re shooting for the end of the month. Please bear with us if it takes longer.” Is there a reason we don’t know, as to why we don’t get specific time frames? Or do you guys just, honestly, not know when you’re thinking about releasing it?

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen.

  • Exporting to USB is nice but it is still an extra step. Please keep banging on the drum that we would like to upload directly to Youtube – simple and easy. Thanks!

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen.1

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen..

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen…

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen…..

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen……

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen……….

  • I would like to see some kind of Dynamic Theme viewer, where you only see the theme on screen…………

  • Sweet loving ps4 :))) But I might be wrong but was there a feature that enabled you to share a game across to a friend eg: if you were stuck on mission you could send it to them or something like that. Might be wrong but not sure?

When are you guys adding name changing on PSN? Have you guys considered doing it?

Scott McCarthy on April 16th, 2014 at 9:32 pm said:
Considered it. How often do you think you would use it?

Just because most people would only use the feature once doesn’t mean that it’s not important and shouldn’t be implemented. I think your users have a right to change their PSN ID if they want to. XBL has granted that right to its users for years now.

I don’t even have to bring XBL into the picture though. After all, PSN users in Japan have also had this right for some time.

It begs the question: why not let your US PSN users change their PSN ID?

  • I like this update, but I think there is more that can be done:
    -Emulation for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games
    -Copy Data to USB Drive
    -Dynamic Themes
    -Enhancing voice control
-Making custom Directories to sort apps and games per user

  • I’ll leave my input:

    – Download pausing, resuming and customization
    – Ability to use the virtual keyboard with your fingers touching the air, in conjunction with the PS Camera?
    – More games, less FPShooters stuff
    – Make sending invitations for online multiplayer to friends a little more straightforward
    – Allow the web browser to use one of the 8 unusued at that moment CPUs when the low performance CPU devoted to the UI starts getting clogged. Perhaps the use of main memory too to alleviate hiccups
    – Native, and full YouTube support (main webpage version) where all videos are watchable without or with html5, with the same broad UI from PC. Also, uploading my gameplay directly to YouTube
    – More PS Plus discounts for PS4 games
    – More PS4 games that aren’t just indies
    – Media support like PS3
    – Able to record longer gameplay videos and load them directly onto a USB device (HDD, Flash Memory)

  • still waiting for ANY kind of UI customization. Im also waiting for the ability to download Vita games and apps to transfer them as the PS3 can do

  • Can we please get the ability to just share with PSN friends in What’s New and NOT have to share stuff on FB or Twitter??

I know the new feature allows you to share on a USB but I’m not trying to export screenshots off my PS4, just share them with my PSN friends. :/

  • Guys, I’m so happy you’ve added this to the PS4… I had high hopes for the streaming and archiving of video, which haven’t quite got there (unless I pay for UStream… which I won’t).

This will finally allow me to do playthroughs of the games I’ve fallen in love with.

    I can’t thank you enough!

  • The copying to USB will be great. The video editing software looks cool. Now that we can add music to the vids, it brings up the question – What is the ETA on the mp3 playback and media server?

  • Keep it coming Sony! Loving all these updates so far!

  • Long ago you promised a suspend/resume feature for PS4 and, pretty much since you announced that feature, it’s really not been spoken of again. Why is that? It’s a huge feature, one that, as someone who’s always getting interrupted while playing and having to stop, is very important to me.

I didn’t want to “go there”, but your direct competitor has the feature (since day one) and it’s a life saver for me; enables me to play even when I’m expecting an interruption and having to stop, something I tend to not do on my PS4 (play when I know I will be interrupted) because I will lose progress.

So why is it that this feature has sort of been swept under the rug? And when can we expect it to arrive?

  • Some games have limited sharing function. For example NBA 2k14 allows you to record video but without sound. Is there any way to bypass such restrictions? Will I be able to record sound in this particular game when using direct capture from HDMI output?

  • How about something to make remote play more stable. It reduces the strength of my connection where the signal is strongest where I can’t event use it (i.e. sitting beside the gateway/router). In other cases, it strengthens the signal when further away from my access point.

I have NEVER been able to access my PS4 outside of my home on public WiFi.

I have a 45 MB download connection and a 5 MB upload connection, although that can be reduced at times based on the devices I have hitting my network.

    Any suggestions anyone?

  • Its great to see the new update is coming soon. I would like to see 3D Blu-ray soon. I am an older gamer, and I believe that most older gamers would agree that we don’t really care about social media. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is great for people who will and are using it, but its not why I spent $400.00 on a new Sony machine. I enjoy good games, great movies and excellent sound.

So here is the dilemma, Watch 3d on the ps3 in 5.1 surround or watch the Blu-ray on the ps4 in 7.1 surround. I’m sorry but the Hobbit was ABSOLUTLY SICK!!!! in 3d!! The ps3 is going to get all my attention, and until a good game comes out, the ps4 is a Hulu/ Netflix machine.

I am looking forward to the last of us ps4. I have already beat it 3 times, but the updated graphics should be awesome. Video and sound are all I’m looking for in 1 machine.

    thanks

  • And for CE-34878-0 error?

  • Great news! I still think there’s an issue (or maybe I’m not doing it right). When I press the Share button to upload a video it doesn’t have the last 15 minutes, it usually misses the parts I need, which is at end of the video. I’m always losing the portion I need. Anyone else having this issue?

  • You guys really need to take a look at the friends list. First of all, when you have 2,000 friends….It just doesn’t work. Doesn’t fully load, it’s impossible to find anyone. No sorting, folders, favorites, etc. I’m guessing no one ever QA tested it with more than 100 friends.

  • Twitch archiving is now the only major feature I need. Thanks Sony! Can’t wait for this to come out

  • Great Update, Now I will be able to easily edit videos and maybe even do a quick review with comentary for my friends or even open a Youtube channel. Awesome app this ShareFactory. Pre-loading also Great, more reason to go digital.

    Whishlist:

1 – External Storage support, so when I download a 40 GB game and I need more space, I can just pass it to an external HD( and back) instead having to delete it and then downloading it again when I want to play more.

2 – Change Background (Color, Wallpaper, Theme)

3 – Folders for Games (Same way the videoapps are under one folder)

    4 – Music Upload

5 – Even if I can get the edit video to an USB and then upload it to youtube, It would be great in the future to be able to upload it right from the PS4 so no middle man (PC) is needed it.

  • I really like the pre-download feature is a very neat feature on PS4. As I really do prefer digital download. But, I hope we also have this features:

    1. Sorting/Filter options on your download list.
    2. Be able to use bigger sized hard drives like 4TB.
    3. If number 2 is not possible, I hope their would be an external hard drive support.
    4. If number 3 is possible, Be able to backup a game from an external hard drive so, that I can just re-copy it on the PS4 instead of downloading it again for a long time.
    5. Customizations
    6. Game management via folders or any type of organization

  • Hi. Great job in PS4, big fan, but it can be better if:
-> You release a MP3 player and also a photo app
-> Option to personalize our UI
-> New sounds to our DS4, like notifications
-> New demos (yeah, it’s really necessary ;))

But right now PS4 is awesomme, but with this features it would be better, just saying (:

    Love PS4, very well job

  • Video chat functionality or Skype please!! Way behind Xbox on this one, guys.

  • Please add 3D Blu-ray playback and DLNA playback (including MKV and MP4 file formats).

  • How about tellling infinity ward to let us be in party chat while playing Search and Rescue or Search and Destroy. I can’ t talk to friends while I play.

  • I am really hoping that with this update the ability to watch my 3d blu ray movies will be added, this one should be easily implemented I would think, I do want the mp3 and media abilities to work that I could do on my ps3. The new features look awesome and I am glad to see the progress you guys are making, but really hope that these other features that should have been available already are included in this. I have my concerns since they haven’t been mentioned yet…..
