Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • Gifting would be a nice addition to the PS Store also being able to see the last few games your friends played and how long ago they were last online.

  • With the next update may we please have it so we can change our PSN names. and can we have a better twitch so I can be able to watch other people then the ones on playstation.

  • all features sound great and all but, where is friends online/offline notification, i hate browsing my ps4 friends list to see whos online or offline, we NEED that feature on PS4 Sony!

  • omg please can you please also update ps4 so wa can get the youtube app on our system and also to play cd’s like our own music plzz plzz :D

  • Excellent update.

    – 1080p uncompressed PNG screenshots
    – 1080p native framerate video captures

Those 2 things possible for a future update? If so, the internet may explode from all the sharing

    • An explosion of shared content? Be still my beating heart! These are great ideas. We LOVE to hear your feedback on how to make sharing easier, better, and more personalized.

  • I just want mp3 custom soundtrack, I always believed it should’ve been standard feature from the get go since the 360/Vita had it that way. I know devs had to opt in for it for PS3 but I really want it in, makes trophy hunting so much easier since I can listen to podcasts and my own music while I’m trophy hunting or just taking on the challenge rooms in Batman Arkham City.

So in short, please get it in there ASAP.

  • When is the 3D movie playback option going to be added in? The Trine 2 demo knew I had a 3DTV and asked if I wanted to display in 3D and it worked great….so why can’t my 3D Blur Ray play?

I still have my PS3 hooked up for my movies. Hurry up I want to put it away!

  • Aaaaand John Koller drops the mic, haha

  • Holy… This takes out a lot of the stuff on my list. I had decided to stop streaming until the option to archive broadcasts popped up (Speaking of which, I really hope that our past broadcasts will be archived as well. Outlast gave me quite a few memories), and I wasn’t at all expecting it in this update (Much less the Lightbar options to shut up the people that can’t seem to hear that LED has almost no effect on the battery). Thanks, Sony!

  • One more thing is I would like it if I could pause a game a turn my system off and come back latter and pick right up where I left off with out reloading the game back up. If I remember that was going to be an option on day one off the system being out.

  • That’s all well and good but I’ll be impressed when you reinstate the PSP/PS1 games on the vita. Til then, no update you ever do to the vita will hold any interest for me

  • Doesn’t anyone want a pause feature for downloads? Shoot maybe that’s asking just WAY to much. I figure it would be pretty easy to do.

  • and what happened to the option where we could jump into someone game and help them out with what ever trouble they are having with the game. That is what you all said at E3 last year.

  • Great update. I’m very happy that we’ll finally be able to sort our trophies by rarity. Another feature I would like to see added someday would be the ability to list all your trophies by rarity without having to click on a game section. For example let’s say I have a trophy from the last of us with a rarity of 1.4% and a trophy from Heavy Rain with a rarity of 0.8%, I’d like to be able to see a list that’d show something like:
    1. Heavy Rain 0.8%
    2. The Last of Us 1.4%

Still looking forward to mp3 support and video playback support. I have so many awesome game trailers on my usb stick that I would love to watch on my PS4 like I used to be able to on my PS3. Keep up the great work Sony, tomorrow’s going to be exciting.

  • i think that we should be forgetting about wanting to play our own mp3’s on the ps4 because its obvious that sony wants people to use their own service instead.dont get me wrong i love this update but i would have to have the ability to play my own mp3 music on my future ps4…. :/

    no dlna
    no custom soundtracks
    no ability to play cd’s
major disappointment, even tho the ps4 has alot of ram and processing power to do all these tasks :/

  • What I’d still like:

    1) Option for folders and pinning stuff on the menu.
    2) Notify me when Friends are online/offline.
    3) Updated streaming interface with less negative space and more room for comments.
    4) More functionalities for the camera inside actual games
    5) Option to have the system automatically turn on during set times without being in Standby mode, such as the PS+ option for the PS3.

I’m sure that there’s more, but those were all that I could think of right now.

  • I’m sure this update is great for some people, but it does nothing for me.

    Where is:
    1. DLNA Support
    2. Youtube App
    3. HBOGO
    4. MP3 Playback during game

  • I would like to be able to delete games from the trophy list that are 0%. Please add folders. Notifications when friends log on. Fix the glitch where Facebook profile photos not showing up (Just a black circle with a line through it). That’s all I can think of for now

  • Any hints as to when we’ll get the Blu-Ray player update? Would be nice to bring it up to the PS3 standard, a dedicated remote wouldn’t hurt either :p

  • Still no friend online status notifications, wow sony! maybe next time then with the dlna support.

  • Better organizational options for games, and purchased content on the download history list please.

  • 2 questions! 1) can you guys give us the option to know when our friends are online? it gets annoying to going back to my friends list just to check if that certain person is online. 2) are we gonna be able to download the update tonight at midnight? Thanks!

  • Great update, would also like some 3D Blu-ray support plz!!! Also a Blu-ray remote would be nice too!

  • WOW! What an AMAZING update! Cant wait to give all the new stuff a try! Being able to watch/listen/view movies, music and pictures from my USB or External Hard Drive will still be what I want most! But I trust you guys will get there. THANKS!

  • Will this include standard UI improvements as well such as allowing us to pause downloads, sort menus, notifications for friends going online etc…?

Also, how much longer for music support and suspend game support…? With all the effort put into this update music support would have been a drop in the bucket, so why the delay?

  • Awesome features in this update! In the next update, can you add a way to organize games/apps etc instead of just having everything in a straight line? Also please add support to import our own MP3/video files like the PS3 allows. Please enable 3D for Bluray movies. Those are the only things I can think of right now that I would like to see implemented in a future update… Soon if possible :D As far as hardware.. A universal remote control with Bluetooth that doesn’t require a connected USB dongle would be awesome!

  • I love you Sony!

  • Can we get the option to sort friends by custom groups? Will we get a notification when a friend signs on or plays a game with this update?

  • Not good for my Vita cause it’s broken and will have to send it out to get fixed… Hope it doesn’t take long!

  • Does USB also include external HDD?

  • What about blu-ray 3d . All so what happened to being able to try games before buying as in the Feb 2013 reveal . Come on Sony p’s 3 you could play 3d movies mp3 plus dlna . Plus using a external drive and USB

  • a long as people pay for sony video and sony music they will not let us use our own music or videos and will continue to block music and video streaming sites

  • While I think this is great and I am glad this update is finally here…….. there is so much more still missing.

How is there no media player?
Where is the DLNA support? (for Vita too)
Where is the ability to organize my library in the media bar?
Where is the ability to organize my friends?
When will we get the ability to play personal music during gameplay?
    & so many more……..

  • This is the big update? The useablilty of the ps4 is not improved at all with this, it’s all about streaming video, which I can get on you tube.

Why were friends notifications not a priority?

Why are games and apps all together in the horizontal bar it’s a disaster, needs organizing it’s a mess

    No mp3 and dlna

Still cannot change even background colour let alone themes.

    Pause downloads??? Hello.

Suspend/resume was a big feature sony talked up at the reveil, it looks like the drive club of OS update delays.

    Etc……

Sony is not listening, all the features were way more important then Share features.

Ps3 is sill a far better console feature wise.

  • Thanks for listening!

  • Ok, Now all the free advertising things added to the PS4 (sharefactory equals free advertising), Now can we get the functionality that we lost from the PS3.

    DLNA support
    USB video playback

You don’t need the Youtube App, just go to the website in the browser. It works great that way

  • now if we can just get DLNA,
    MP3 support
    player notifications
Friend sorting i think we’d be just about back up to PS3’s speed.

  • Any news on when/if standby mode that supports game resume is still coming?

I would love to just be able to pause a game and power the system down and then come back to it later.

  • well i have to say im disapointed. all this teasing of more stuff but it wasnt reallly all that more. the stuff that we didnt know about was minor stuff.

i cant beleive we still cant play MP3 have a youtube app or DLNA on our ps4.
or something as simple as friends notification is also missing. certainly this is easy to implement.

folders are also really important atm i am starting to consider deleting some games because the list is getting soooo long. and why do we have all those download APPs icons under. if i want an APP ill go to store especialy when i alrdy have the app it should remove the download link.

so only 4 major things . USB export wich is still just a work around for something that should have been there.
video editing app that was created by another sony department.
HDCP wich i gues is good for some so im glad tho its useless to me since we alrdy have streaming.
and pre-download. wich to me is useless cause with the speed of internet i have i can wait. but i d apreciate that most ppl might use this.

  • Been waiting for this update! Just one question though.. Will I be able to back up or export my saved clips to a USB? Or is this just for new clips you save after the update?

  • Also we need to do something with the train wreck of a Menu. The PS3 menu was way better and still could be improved upon. Also let me delete the apps I don’t use. I don’t even want to see them advertised on my menu.

  • Fix LPCM 7.1 issue through HDMI. Only stereo sound where PS3 has 7.1.

  • When are people going to realize there’s never gonna be a music player Sonys a business and they want to sell music unlimited subs. It is like having a cd store and putting up posters for spotify and iTunes all over the wallets of your place.

  • Ummmmm…. HOW ABOUT SOME MP3 AUDIO SUPPORT & MP4 VIDEO SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!?????????

THIS is what we want. Our music. Our videos. Forget these sharing options. I still have no idea what HDCP means. I’m sick of playing InFamous in silence, or having to play music from another source while I’m playing my PS4. You said it was coming, where is it?? Sony and the PSP are the very reason I have a robust, high-quality Mp3 audio and mp4 video catalog. I would like to access these files on my PS4 menu and during gameplay! It makes no sense that this hasn’t been added already, it’s tech that’s come built into the last 3 PlayStation consoles. To release and hype such a “MAJOR UPDATE” without addressing this garing issue is, quite frankly, insulting.

SONY- TAKE SOME NOTES… WE WANT OUR AUDIO & VIDEO BACK!!

  • Also I’ll will cause all kind of problems with streaming because if people are playing there own music in games then streaming it then videos will be taken down then people will complain. Why did my video get taken down wtf.

  • If you didn’t like the features then why did you buy a ps4 it is what it is. Again sony may never put it in

  • Thanks for the update! glad to see that you are listening guys!

  • @95 if they make it a background type app. sony can make it that it will stream the game audio .
besides this could alrdy be a problem really. if someones was playing music inside their home while streaming thei game and have audio chat enabled. it will alrdy be streaming the music.

  • Great new features across all 3 platforms. Looking forward to the update. Some things that I’d like to see implemented in the next update though are:

    – The ability to pause and prioritize downloads
    – An on screen notification when friends come online
    – Some type of Folder or organization system for games instead of having to scroll through a huge line to get to games.
    – The ability to control the mouse pointer with the touch pad in the web browser
    – Being able to play videos and music through USB
    – The video game suspend mode you guys mentioned back before launch (like Vita and PSP have)
    – Custom backgrounds or skins for the home menu

Keep up the great work guys, hopefully we can see some if not all the features requested in the near future.

  • Not gonna lie guys…this is EXTREMELY disappointing. I was really expecting at least ONE feature people actually wanted. Not this stuff that 5% of people care about. Hopefully the next update will be a real update and actually include some of the things the flipping PS3 does.
