  • So now for some questions actually relevant to the post (hopefully Paul or someone else at Evolution is still looking at comments here):

    1. What are club membership mechanics like? Can you join more than one club? Can you switch clubs (and if so, are there any limits to how many times, etc. etc.)?

    2. When a person you challenged (video 1, I think) re-broadcasts that challenge to his contacts, is there a history that is accumulated? That is, will the people who received the challenge derivatively still be able to see that you started the challenge, and perhaps see a history of people who successively beat the challenge?

  • Tell us how match making works. If I have the PS+ Edition, will I be matched with PS+ Edition players only? If I am driving a certain free car, will I be matched with players driving similar performance/cc/whatever cars only? With the emphasis on clubs, it suggests that matches will be mixed with all cars, no restriction or attempt to balance the playing field.

The main question remains: I only have 1/5 of the cars (presumably mostly the lowest end of each class), how am I going to win any race against other players who paid for the full game and have the full arsenal of fast cars?

  • MAC-DADDY-REGGIE

in comment 18 reply he clearly states “PLAY TROUGH (PART) OF THE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN” so we wont get the whole single player campaign experience. if that’s not pay to play i don’t know what is. how many people want to start a campaign and doesn’t want to finish it (unless it sucks). sigh.. i was genuinely excited for this tittle. o well i’m pretty sure destiny will keep me occupied, so no biggie.

  • While I was disappointed at the initial requirement to need PS+ to keep the game at a discounted price, at least that bad decision was rectified.

Now on to the people complaining about the game not being fully free. If I remember correctly back at the live E3 streaming, conference or whatever it was when they first mentioned DRIVECLUB, the guy CLEARLY said that users would get “DRIVERCLUB PS+ Edition” free. They specifically said the PS+ Edition so it was very obvious it wouldn’t be the full game.

Anyone who blindly just thought that Sony would put out a next gen game and release it at no charge at all must be insane. This is a business and they are not going to just give you high budget games for free on a console that just launched.

Also, anyone who passes on this game just because they found out it will cost money is plain silly. You’ll get the chance to try the game, and if it’s fun you’ll gladly pay to get the full version.

This game looks very promising and I’ll likely try the free version first to see if it’s worth buying the full game.

  • @53, “Anyone who blindly just thought that Sony would put out a next gen game and release it at no charge at all must be insane. This is a business and they are not going to just give you high budget games for free on a console that just launched.”

No really. In fact, it is perfectly logical that Sony would put out a next gen game for free, exactly for the reason that it’s “a console that just launched”. In Japan, every PS4 sold comes with a free copy of Knack or something. And Sony has been putting out PS4 games in IGC every month, though not high budget titles.

Basically what happened was that Sony originally wanted to use Driveclub to promote the PS4, so a full or almost full game was promised for free. But the studio dropped the ball, Driveclub was delayed and delayed. At this time, after the PS4 has sold 6 million sets, Driveclub is no longer a launch title needed to push the console. And due to the delay, development expenses have gone up. So cost outweighs benefits, they just pulled the handbrake and did a U-turn. Instead of a 80-100% game for free, it becomes a 20% glorified demo.

  • #1 it is a demo.
#2 they said plus edition would be missing a few cars and tracks
    #3 these videos suck
#4 microtransactions are never for gamers’ benefit
#5 i see no “revolutionary gameplay”, those menus better be dynamic as hell.

  • @honkayjeezus I do. You know I didn’t mean that comment to everyone, because not everyone is like that. But I do mean my reply to SmokeAdellic. He is clearly insulting us PSN users. That is more than enough to piss me off. I wasn’t happy with the Driveclub thing either, but I’m glad it was changed. There was no reason for insults like that.

  • @yowzagabowza

#1 – No, it’s not a demo. Demo’s don’t allow you to unlock trophies and come with all game modes unlocked.
#2 – Yes, they did. You are right
#3 – These videos are awesome
#4 – The micro’s in this game are only for people who don’t want to put in the time to unlock the cars and has no effect on the game whatsoever other than people who like blindly throwing away money.
#5 – I hope the dynamic menu is cool as well. Game looks great already though.

  • PrimeroIncognito

I’m glad Sony reversed that stipulation…

Now we don’t have to hear anymore whining (about that)…

Anyone who thinks it was a “test” is paranoid, still. They wouldn’t test something like that. It’s too risky. Like I said earlier, no company wants a bunch of disgruntled customers showing up at their doorstep. They didn’t do it on purpose for some shady reasons… in fact, the reversal proves they aren’t greedy. Greed would have held tight to that condition at all costs. So, if anything, this proves everyone wrong when they talk about how “greedy” Sony is.

I guarantee you they knew ahead of time that many people wouldn’t like it, but did it anyway ’cause they felt like they had do, for financial reasons. And now, even though they’ve been very humble in their response, I guarantee you they’re not looking forward to eating the potential loss in projected revenue. I believe they’ll get through it anyway, though, because the PS4 is shaping up to be absolutely dominant over the next couple of years.

  • A demo is meant to give you a taste of the game, so that hopefully you will like the game and buy it. Whether you get to play 2% of the game, 20% of the game, the first area of the game, first hour of the game, one game mode (just capture the flag but not king of the hill), all game modes (both the above)… it does not matter. Whether you get trophies or you get a message saying you would have gotten a trophy had you bought the full game… it does not matter. Whether they call it demo, full game trial, open beta, prologue, ground zeroes… it does not matter.

If the nature of it is a demo, it’s a demo. If they yanked a large part of the game out and only give you a small bit to play with, it’s a demo.

People seem to make a big deal out of “all game modes unlocked”. What game modes would there be in such a racing game? Career mode (which obviously you can only play a small bit of), tournament mode (again you play just a tiny bit since you won’t have all tracks)? So what if you get to play all game modes? Of course they want to demonstrate all the modes… what competent demo wouldn’t show you all the modes and highlight all the features?

  • Remember The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1? They give you that for free. It’s 1/5 of the whole game. It gives you trophies. It lets you play the whole episode, all game modes. It is actually a small complete game if you want to look at it that way, but regardless, IT’S A DEMO! Remember Blue Toad Murder Files? Same deal, first episode free. IT’S A DEMO!

  • Honestly, I’m glad they reversed their decision to make your game purchase tied to your plus account, but to be perfectly honest the game still has a big problem. The plus edition is missing at least 75% of the tracks and cars. I call it demo, some call it “Plus Edition” other call it beta. Some will call it trial, and some will call it Shareware. Honestly all of these terms are true.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. Anything over 60% of a game that is missing makes it a demo. You call it whatever you want, but that’s a pretty severe crippling of the game. Allowing people to earn trophies does not a game make. It’s fooled some people, but looks to be mainly only the trophy hunters. Personally I couldn’t care less about trophies. The pop ups are annoying in the middle of a game, and I can’t even remember the last time I synced them off my PS3 or Vita.

  • I think a lot of us can safely say that the hype for this game is pretty low after the delay, the plus tie-in drama, the poorly worded level of crippling of the game that seems to change from month to month. I hope they can turn it around so the people that actually did the work on the game can earn a living despite questionable decisions by their bosses.

There’s still time before the game launches. Let’s try to wait and see if they can get their act together and give us a decent plus model and a decent (read: not full price) upgrade option. If they can’t then I’d kind of prefer if the plus edition disappeared altogether and was replaced with another game. Make it an indie which I hate because I think there’s just too many of them and most of them are poorly made in my opinion, but at least it would be a full game

  • But I do think it’s about time for 1 full retail game to hit the IGC for PS4. There’s plenty of them to choose from and that could be picked up by Sony for the IGC fairly cheap. Lego Marvel comes to mind. So does Injustice or maybe Tomb Raider Definitive. These games have seen steep discounts already which is usually the model for games hitting plus anyway. I own all these games so it wouldn’t benefit me in the slightest if they hit the IGC in Drive Club’s place, but at least it would show that Sony’s stepping up their game and taking their next gen (or current gen – whatever) console seriously

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ GummyCore

So, did you consider Gran Turismo 5: Prologue to be a “demo”? And if so, did you whine about the fact that it cost $39.99 when it released? (FYI: GT5:P had fewer tracks [6] than the so-called “demo” version of DRIVECLUB [11].)

Where was all the outrage over that? I don’t recall hearing much.

“A forty-dollar demo?!?! Are you crazy Sony?!!??!?! RAAARRGHARRrAGAHAHR!!!! I’m switching to XBOX right after I change my dirty diaper!!! RAHHHHRRGH!!”

  • glad I started a debate on what a demo truly is, and I see that there are obviously detractors on the issue. really, with the social features, etc, it’s an extended demo, but a demo none the less.

also, I would like to point out to the detractors who argue “but you knew it was PS+ edition”…where’s your sense of pride in being a PS+ member? who here has been PS+ since it first began, when PS+ edition usually meant early access to demos or betas? when it got you bonuses instead of giving you a fraction of the game? Warframe had the right idea in offereing a PS+ starter pack for their game, a little extra on top of. where is that? is our extra on top the extension of the demo? that’s weak guys, and you all know it.

for those saying I’m wanting more free games, incorrect. I simply wish to receive what I pay for across all 3 consoles (PS4, PS3 and Vita), which includes 1 free FULL PS4 game per month. I certainly hope sony finds a solution by Oct 7th, which would be the first Tuesday of October and the first store update of that month.

  • I do not know enough of GT5 Prologue to tell, why don’t you tell me? One thing I do know is that, from the get go, they did not hide the fact that it is a “prologue”. Ground Zeroes and Driveclub are the obvious opposites. The fact that the studio went back on their words of the Plus Edition being full game less a few cars/tracks demonstrates fully their guilt. As I mentioned above, due to the delays, Driveclub Plus Edition no longer serves its original purpose of being a free game to drive console sale, so they just whip up a small version (call it demo or whatever) and give it trophies, so that people are fooled into thinking they did not lie. Obviously some people fell for that.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ DaGimp13

Who cares. Demos are free and so is the “Plus version” of DRIVECLUB (which gives a lot more for free than demos do).

If you want the full game and buy it through your Plus version, you pay $10 less than someone who didn’t. There’s the Plus perk you’re looking for.

    @ GummyCore

Ah, so you just weren’t paying it any attention. Well, if you had been watching GT5:P before it released, would you have complained about it costing $39.99 with only 6 out of the 71 tracks and only around 70 out of the 1,000+ cars? Percentage wise, GT5:P offered much less content in comparison to it’s finished version than DRIVECLUB does.

Also, DRIVECLUB’s trophies were part of the plan from the beginning. They didn’t allow them later to make up for less in-game content. By the way, you can’t get ALL the trophies in Episode 1 of The Walking Dead.

  • @PrimeroIncognito

Well, actually what you just described is a completely DIFFERENT PS+ perk, known as a “Discount” ;-) you’re right, free demos are great, but remember it’s a demo. remember PS3 when you’d download a full game through PS+, the 1 hour trials? could earn trophies etc, and if you wanted to keep the trophies, had to buy the game? it’s really not much different as Paul Rustchynsky said himself earlier, and I quote:

“So you’ll be able to create or join a club, send and recieve challenges, set-up your own races, play through part of the single-player campaign, and more! On top of this you’ll be able to unlock trophies and even earn the Platinum, and if you choose to upgrade then all of your progress is seamlessy carried over too.”

Notice the key words “play through part of the single-player campaign, and more! On top of this you’ll be able to unlock trophies”
“Play through part of”…hmmm, sounds like that might be an hour worth of campaign. next? ok. “and more! On top of this you’ll be able to unlock trophies “….guess what? the trophies are the “and more!” in that robotic PR statement, no offense Paul, but it’s clearly scripted to maximize interest.

  • only difference really is the online side would last longer than 1 hour and you get trophies regardless of purchasing the upgrade.

  • PrimeroIncognito

Yes, I know what I was describing, thanks.

You mentioned “bonuses” and I pointed one of them out.

Single-player may be shortened, but online is infinite. Can’t really complain about that.

  • so it’s agreed though that this is a demo, extended or not, demo? ok. so its a demo with option to purchase full game at discount, agreed? ok. Day 1 discounts and demos are always welcome in the PS community…but that’s my overall point, is that a demo is not a full game and a discount is not a free game either…so obviously Sony has some stepping up to do.

btw, bonuses referred to extras like special backgrounds, ingame character weapons or avatars, etc…the Discounts and early access betas is what they promote alongside with the free games, so are they really bonuses, or part of the package deal, seeing as we get weekly discounts across the 3 consoles on way or another?

  • PrimeroIncognito

No, I don’t agree it’s a demo. I’m just allowing you to feel that way if you wish.

I don’t consider GT5: Prologue to be a demo, so I don’t consider DRIVECLUB PS+ Edition to be a demo either.

    • Demos don’t allow you this much content for free.
    • Demos don’t have trophies.
    • Demos generally don’t allow infinite online play.
    • Demos generally don’t allow you to track, save, and advance your progress through the game.

    • A racing game demo wouldn’t give you 11 tracks, you’d get only 1, maybe 2.
    • A racing game demo wouldn’t give you 10 cars. Again, you’d get 1 or 2.
    • DRIVECLUB PS+ Version does not lock you out after 1 hour of play.

Therefore, DRIVECLUB PS+ Version is NOT a demo. There is also no standard for “expanded demo”. So, even if this is the first of its kind, the protocol for producing expanded demos still wouldn’t take hold until a second game utilizes the same model.

  • @67, When GT5P was release, was it made clear that eventually the expanded game will have 71 tracks/1000+ cars? I don’t know whether I would have complained or called it a demo. To me the positive thing that is that they made it clear it’s a prologue (it’s in the name!)

So if GT5 has 1000+ cars, in comparison, having just 50 cars in the full game makes Driveclub rather limited in content, doesn’t it? And with just 5 locations, 55 tracks (no doubt they will count reversed direction, weather variations, various shorter circuits through the same location, paths that change in the last round etc all as individual ‘tracks’), the full game of Driveclub isn’t much to begin with. What does that make 10 cars in the PS+ Edition?

The thing that gets people most upset (now that the unfair upgrade policy is reversed) is simply that THEY LIED. I would have happily accepted the PS+ Edition as IGC over most 8-bit indies, but the fact remains – we were shortchanged. We were promised an almost complete game but we get an extended demo (if that’s the term you can agree on) instead, and they continue to lie about it being a full game.

  • @72, If you don’t want to call it a demo, I’ll allow you to feel that way if you wish. But let’s say they promised GT6 for free (knowing that GT6, at the time of release, is not complete yet, there are more cars and tracks as DLCs in the works to eventually expand it to 71 tracks/1000+ cars – in other words, GT6 is the final finished product less a few cars/tracks). And then they changed that to giving just GT6:P for free. Doesn’t matter if you call GT6:P a demo or whatever, important thing is, you are getting way much less than promised. Would you be happy to get GT6:P instead of GT6? Is it right for them to pull such a sleight of hand and insist that GT6:P was what they originally promised?

  • PrimeroIncognito

GummyCore said: “When GT5P was release, was it made clear that eventually the expanded game will have 71 tracks/1000+ cars? I don’t know whether I would have complained or called it a demo.”

What does that matter? You brought up the percentages (20%) and I showed you how GT5:P offered even less, percentage wise, in comparison to its full version. And it cost $40! Compared to FREE! That’s a HUGE difference! If you wouldn’t have complained, you’re a hypocrite!

GummyCore said: “To me the positive thing that is that they made it clear it’s a prologue (it’s in the name!)”

The modified nature of DRIVECLUB PS+ Version was made clear too. There has been a lot of press surrounding it for months. Stop pretending that you’ve been deceived. PS+ Version is in the name! Big hint!

  • PrimeroIncognito

GummyCore said: “So if GT5 has 1000+ cars, in comparison, having just 50 cars in the full game makes Driveclub rather limited in content, doesn’t it?”

That’s not the issue here. Gran Turismo makes EVERY racing game look limited in comparison.

GummyCore said: “The thing that gets people most upset is simply that THEY LIED.”

They didn’t ever lie. They had every intention of delivering what they said they would. Plans had to be modified when unforeseen roadblocks popped up. The release date changed as a result. The modifications were made public before the game was released. There is no attempt at trickery here. Just poor foresight caused by unbridled ambition. Stop taking it so hard, and so personal.

    I’m done. Peace.

  • Which “unforeseen roadblocks popped up” to prevent them from including most of the cars/tracks (less “a few”) in the PS+ Edition come October, if they have “every intention of delivering what they said they would”???

As I mention in comment #54 above, basically what happened was that Sony originally wanted to use Driveclub to promote the PS4, so a full or almost full game was promised for free. But the studio dropped the ball, Driveclub was delayed and delayed. At this time, after the PS4 has sold 6 million sets, Driveclub is no longer a launch title needed to push the console. Instead of a 80-100% game for free, it becomes a 20% glorified demo.

The only unfore$een roadblock$ stopping them from delivery on their promise is money or greed – and that is no excuse (but I will try that “every intention” line on the bank if I fall short on my mortgage payment). They are just weaseling out of what they originally promised (they even try to cover up what they promised).

    THEY LIED.

  • @GummyCore The more you keep saying “THEY LIED,” the more dumber you get. I don’t know if you’re doing it on purpose or just being a plain idiot, but I kind of agree what Primero is saying. The title clearly says “PS+ Edition.” Surely that never meant the full game. If you think that way, then you consumers are just a bad as the company themselves. Stop spewing self-centered nonsense. You gamers are nothing but selfish brats.

  • Oops, did not mean to double post. But to add to that, I knew that the “PS+ Edition” won’t be the full game. No way a company would give away their hard earned dollars on something they worked hard for months. You guys have no idea how business works, do you?

  • Paul, still waiting on any feedback whatsoever about your comment about the PS Plus edition being just “minus a few cars and tracks”?

Maybe you don’t read the PS Blog, but feel free to answer. I hate to think you just randomly lie about things? Was the retail version set to release at PS4 launch 13 cars deep?

  • @Gamerz, I have seen your comments… please don’t include me in your “us PS Plus users”.

Chill out a bit on everyone else, people want some general answers about what Paul was saying a month or two before the game’s launch last Fall.

  • @Gamerzlimited, Instead of name calling (dumb, plain idiot, self-centered, selfish brats…), can you try learning some reading comprehension?

As quoted many times here and in the previous thread, last September Evolution Studios design director Paul Rustchynsky said “You can earn the platinum trophy in the PS+ Edition, remember its the full game minus a few cars/tracks.”

Repeat after me: PS+ EDITION… ITS THE FULL GAME MINUS A FEW CARS/TRACKS

Yes, we all know the title clearly says “PS+ Edition”, we all know “PS+ Edition” won’t be the full game. Guess what? We all also knew PS+ EDITION IS THE FULL GAME MINUS A FEW CARS/TRACKS, cos that’s what Evolution Studios told us. If that’s not the case now, THEY LIED.

No company would give away their hard earned dollars on something they worked hard for months – true, they only give away DEMOS for free. If you know how business works, you should know that they were going to give it away as a launch title to promote the PS4. That’s what Sony was aiming to do. Obviously the studio screwed up with the delays, now it is no longer needed for that purpose, and they took back their promise. THEY LIED.

  • And here’s another quote: “Yes, the PS Plus version will be the exact same as the full version, except that it may be missing a few assets such as cars or tracks, that will be found in the full version.”

    playstationer(dot)net/2013/07/05/driveclub-q-and-a/

  • @honkayjeezus I just noticed I used “us” when I wasn’t suppose to. I hate when people say those words and I apologize for saying them myself. I meant “the” PSN users, a typo on my part. It wasn’t my intention to include you. I just don’t like people use “us” and “we” as I don’t speak for them. That is all.

It’s fine that people want answers, but it’s just that some people such as those two I was replying to aren’t helping. They’re not going to get an answer with the poor attitude towards the company. They could get one if they acted a little nicer.

  • LOL, someone using terms like “dumb, plain idiot, self-centered, selfish brats” freely teaching others to act a little nicer. Well, bootlicking didn’t work (the two I was replying to tried it repeatedly), sometimes the squeaky wheel approach gets results. See the last thread, QED.

  • @GummyCore You do know that those insults isn’t entirely directed towards you? I was directing to those that are too blinded by company hate and people will have an idea who I mean.

Ok, I can see your point. I don’t read from 3rd party sources because most of them aren’t reliable, so how was I suppose to know? That site you took the quote from doesn’t look like it was legit. But fine.

Demos are fine because they serve as a sample for you to buy the real product. And yeah I know, minus a few cars/tracks. It’s good to hear that you know it isn’t the full version. That means you aren’t a reckless consumer, but not everyone does know and will complain it isn’t.

That’s because I’m not showing my “nice” side today and I’m not usually like this. Saying that comment about bootlicking was completely unnecessary. How would you feel if someone said that to you?

  • @87, If that link doesn’t look legit, how about this post by Rushy himself:

That’s where I got the “You can earn the platinum trophy in the PS+ Edition, remember its the full game minus a few cars/tracks” quote.

To be honest, I was not aware of either links directly, but I do remember reading about it on other game news sites. That’s why I always had the impression that we are getting a near full game. Sure enough, a simple search on Joystiq and Gamespot lead to those links.

By the way, I know the “upgrade PS+ dependency” issue is resolved, but take a look at this screenshot:
    i.imgur(dot)com/ZnLnMub.png

Rushy originally posted that the upgrade does not require PS+ subscription (bottom) but later edited his post to remove that reference (top). That’s the sort of nice company we are dealing with.

  • I watch E3 every year and I don’t remeber ever hearing them say it wasn’t the full version. Sure you could read between the lines when they said “PS+ Edition”. Then later was the “minus a few cars and tracks” quote. I would have never even got excited for it if they said at e3 that it was 1/5 th of the game. It’s like they used it as a system seller then its gets delayed and and people buy ps4s anyway. So after a year of delays they improve what? Less of the game, lower framerate, and not a video of gameplay in sight. That’s fishy to me. Mark my words, if this goes over well, it won’t be the last non full game on the IGC.

  • Search youtube for NOoJ6ucEY8g. That’s the E3 Sony press conference posted by IGN. Forward to 1:29:02. Jack did announce that it’s PS+ Edition we get, with no details on what is or is not included.

  • Why do you feel people feel so “entitled” to get the ENTIRE GAME FOR FREE? That is complete insanity. Having Evolution give then entire game for free, after suffering lay-offs and delays and pouring a lot of time and effort into the game, would be ridiculous! I bet none of you who feel the entitlement to the full game for free did anything to help Evolution out. Did you work on the game? NO. Did you donate money to help them? NO.

So quit acting like you are so deserving of a brand-new title for free, when you clearly aren’t. As far as the PS Plus Edition of the game, I like how the Platinum can be earned as well as play with all the social features and game modes. Since I am not a racing fan, I will definitely give this a shot.

  • @Primer, I think it does show that they were being greedy and people are right to be upset. As you said, they surely knew before proposing that stipulation that there would be an outrage, and they did it anyway. Maybe it would be more forgivable if they had asked less, but charging $50 for a game you can’t keep when you can just buy it retail for $60? That’s just crazy.
With time (and probably not much of it), people will likely forgive and forget this because it was only brought up one time and with one game. But let’s not forget Microsoft’s original plans before they did their 180. It absolutely was greedy, wrong and is reason enough for no one to trust them ever again. That 180 will be considered by them (Micro$oft) as a HUGE loss and they may spend the next 7 years finding ways to screw their consumers, just like they had so hoped to do on day 1. This Driveclub situation leaves a bad taste in my mouth because we all want to believe that Sony is better than M$, and of course they are… but when they start doing things like this it is very easy to suspect differently.

  • Having said all of that, I want to say that I have had Driveclub pre-ordered since last year, so my issues with Sony don’t stem from any sense of entitlement. They do plenty of things I am not happy with, but these things I understand must be done for business reasons, but like I said this was just wrong and should never have made it public. Surely, there were many people involved in the discussion and there was an agreement that it was a good idea to propose it to the consumers. Isn’t Sony smarter than that? Isn’t Sony better than M$? That line just became a little more transparent.

  • And I think the PS + edition is perfectly fair. We’ve known from the beginning that it would be a stripped-down version of the full game, which is why I pre-ordered it. Driveclub is a massive AAA title and was originally going to be one of the PS4’s flagship titles. It would be incredibly foolish for Sony to just give it away.

  • I think most of the whiners would prefer having NO Driveclub PS+ version AT ALL. That would make them really happy!

  • @93,

Those poor developers of Contrast, they are just a 7-persons team, they poured so much time and effort into making the game, and yet on day 1, their labor of love is given away to all PS+ subscribers for free as IGC. And that’s the full game, not just a glorified demo. They must be out of jobs, out of money and starving now. We PS+ members are terrible human beings for feeling so entitled to rob them of their game sales. And they must be totally insane to give us their game for free.

Really, do you think that’s the case? Do you think game developers/publishers just give away their games as IGC? Of cos not. This is a business. Sony is footing the bill. Whether the dev gets the same cut they would have gotten if the game was sold, we will never know – obviously Sony get a sizable cut from digital sales, perhaps it’s just Sony forgoing their cut when a game is on IGC, and Sony is not doing that for free either, it’s like insurance, Sony collected the PS+ subscription fee from everyone to fund that.

And back to Evolution Studio, if you are not aware, they are not an indie studio like the Contrast team. Sony acquired them in September 2007. They are part of Sony. If they are suffering layoffs, doesn’t that have to do with the mismanagement there (project delays etc) or industry climate? Don’t blame the ‘greed’ or ‘sense of entitlement’ of us PS+ members.

In Japan, ever set of PS4 sold comes with Knack for free (full game, not demo, no PS+ needed). Oh they must be insane for giving their months of hard work away. That must be resulting in Sony Japan Studio laying off employees and the studio will be collapsing soon. Those Japanese customers are such vultures for being entitled to the free game. Not. Obviously being a launch title offered for free to push a new console, the developer (regardless first party or third) is being compensated appropriately. It is Sony footing the bill, as part of the expenses to gain market share, no different from marketing expenses and SuperBowl advertisements.

DriveClub was supposed to be our freebie game to help push the console. It falls under the same PS4 marketing budget. It has nothing to do with us PS+ members feeling entitled or greedy.
