Ratchet & Clank Announced for PS4

Hey everyone,

It’s been a dream of ours for years at Insomniac to see Ratchet & Clank on the big screen. We think the entire Ratchet & Clank universe is a perfect fit for moviegoers, from our unique cast of intergalactic characters and outrageous weapons to the majestic planets and cheeky humor.

So it’s with great pride I get to announce that Insomniac will continue our involvement with the Ratchet & Clank movie while developing a game that re-imagines the original Ratchet & Clank for PS4. As was mentioned during Sony’s press conference , the game will share the film’s vision of Ratchet’s origin story, and features updated gameplay along with completely new visuals that rival the best PS4 games on the market.

Both the movie and game will be available in the first half of 2015. Our California and North Carolina studios will work on the game together – marking our deepest cross-country collaboration since the Durham studio was founded in 2009. Many of the original developers responsible for the very first Ratchet & Clank game will get an opportunity to create the stunning Solana Galaxy our fans have been clamoring for. Longtime Design Director Brian Allgeier, North Carolina Studio Director Chad Dezern and Game Director Shaun McCabe will lead the project.

I’ve been personally involved with the Ratchet & Clank movie since pre-production began. Hopefully, you had a chance to see the film trailer shown during the press conference . We are happy with how production is progressing as everything feels authentic to the spirit of Ratchet & Clank. In fact, our key characters are voiced in the movie by the same fine folks who bring them to life in our games – talented actors such as James Arnold Taylor (Ratchet), David Kaye (Clank) and Jim Ward (Qwark) reprise their famous roles while we have a surprise or two still planned. Former Insomniac scribe-turned-Hollywood screenwriter TJ Fixman wrote the Ratchet & Clank movie’s original script. Renowned award-winning Insomniac artists David Guertin and Greg Baldwin created the character concepts for some of the new creatures appearing in the film — operating under their spectacular Creaturebox label .

And former Insomniac animation director Oliver Wade is helping oversee animation production at Rainmaker Entertainment.

We can’t wait to show you more from both the game and the movie. Expect to catch your first glimpse of the PS4 Ratchet & Clank game this fall – follow us on our social channels below to learn more. In the meantime, we hope you’ve polished off Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus or are brushing up on the PS2 classic games through the HD Collection on PlayStation 3 . Of course, you can also get your Ratchet & Clank fix on PS Vita via the HD Trilogy starting this July.

Thanks for stopping by, and as always, you can ping Insomniac via our Facebook page or Twitter .

  • So I’m a bit confused, has the Ratchet and Clank Collection for the PS Vita been announced for the United States yet? Because here it refers to it as the Ratchet and Clank Trilogy, which is not what it is called in North America. And no US websites have it availible for pre-order yet.

  • Awesome! I can’t wait for the Ratchet and Clank Collection to come to the PS Vita! I hope we get a solid release date for North America soon!

  • Can’t wait for moar Ratchet! One of my favorite gaming series ever!!!

And I have to express my belief that you HAVE TO MAKE THIS GAME 60fps. Ratchet and Clank plays WAY better at 60fps. Into the Nexus was a great game but my enjoyment of it really took a hit due to the 30fps. I will gladly take a hit in visual fidelity if it means getting 60fps gameplay back.

Thanks for all your hard work guys. You’re the best! ^_^

  • I really hope you guys are just redesigning the first game from the ground up with no map/story changes. The original was so good so please don’t reboot the franchise. My cousin and I couldn’t stop playing the original three. So many great memories. I need another game that takes place after Into the Nexus. A full 10 hour or more Ratchet & Clank experience.

  • This is simply amazing!
Not only are you guys making a movie, but you’re also rebooting the franchise, or, at least you’re reimagining the first game.

This is seriously the stuff of dreams for a Ratchet and Clank fan! I simply can’t wait for this!

  • i am extremely excited for Rachet and Clank on PS4, it has always been my favorite series and franchises that i mainly missed on the PS3 life so i dont feel the weight and the feeling of there have been so many eventhough theres been a bunch, but yeah as long as i dont have to pay 60 dollars for it thad be great. make it 20-30 dollars in the store and ill buy it no questions asked

  • The anticipation is killing me. I raised 4 kids on Ratchet, Jak, Ty, Sly. you get the idea. I never thought I would get into these games but considering the fact that I am 54, and the kids are adults and on their own yet I continue to keep up on games and consoles, oh yeah, I am hooked. Anxious for the movie and the revamped game for PS4.

By the way, I met a gal on line who is also a gamer and she is 70+ years old. How cool is that.

Idky it took me so long, never played Rachet and clank b4 a few days ago tools of destruction was on psn sale i figured y not im bored and i just beat watchdogs i need something to play. OMG Rachet and clank have become 1 of my PlayStation favorites right behind Uncharted. Its soooo fun im not even thru the 1st game and decided to buy a crack in time too im lovn the game so far and from what i can tell i have lots of Rachet and clank adventures ahead of me which is great. And now a remake of the 1st Rachet and clank 4 ps4?! I may just become a superfan i love the space themes jus seems like starfox but way cooler. Im already droolin over the thought of what this would look like on ps4 lol was going to get another 1 does any1 know if quest for booty is good?

  • A game based on a movie based on a game… This is going to be a disaster. It’s such a shame Sony couldn’t have left well enough alone and ended this series After a Crack in Time. Each entry since has gotten worse and worse, the sales have fallen off a cliff and yet it’s still being milked dry. I just don’t get it. Insomniac couldn’t even be bothered to send somebody to Sony’s conference since they were so busy yucking it up with their new best friends over at MS and we’ve heard nothing on this since Andrew House quickly glossed over it but I’m supposed to believe this game is going to be any good? Maybe if Insomniac had one of its ‘A’ teams working on it but we know that’s not the case.

  • So now that Insomniac is with Xbox will the R&C games be multiplatform?? I’ve lost faith in Insomniac and will spend my money elsewhere. I mean this isn’t even a new game. This is sheer LAZINESS. Milking us PlayStation fans for more money while the Xbox get original IPs? No thank you. I’ll give my $$ to Naughty Dog… deservedly so!
