Destiny: PS4 Beta Hands-on

Today, PS4 and PS3 owners will get a chance to experience Bungie‘s galaxy-spanning epic Destiny for the first time. Assuming the role of a newly revived Human, Awoken, or Exo, players will explore the ruins of a Russian Cosmodrome and battle hordes of formidable Fallen and feral Hive, all while earning new skills and collecting increasingly effective weapons and armor.

I had an early opportunity to play the Beta, and I’ve collected my initial notes below. While this post is by no means comprehensive, I hope it’ll help get you up to speed before you hop in yourself. And if you’re in the Beta, please share your tips, observations, and feedback in the comments below.

If you played or read about Destiny’s Alpha last month, you might be wondering what’s changed for the Beta. The answer: plenty! Perhaps most notably, the Beta fills in many narrative gaps with pre-rendered and in-engine cinematics, fleshing out more of the backstory and making this feel much more like a world I want to explore. These scenes are fully voice-acted; your character even chimes in with his or her own voice from time to time! Your Ghost companion’s dialogue has been refined as well, and generally fits better into the overall story, complete with computerized filters and other cool audio effects that lend a bit more personality and color.

A few more enhancements I noticed in the Beta:

  • Music is more prevalent during the Beta’s more intense action sequences.
  • Screen-filling visual effects that punctuate important in-game events look to have been punched up, like a display-wide violet tinge and screen-shake when a massive ship drops a platoon of enemies onto the field.
  • Certain areas are now dubbed “Darkness Zones.” Respawning is disabled in these sections, meaning you and your Fireteam need to stay on point to make it through.
  • On the main overworld map, the Tower displays small, green icons to indicate when rewards or messages are waiting for you there.
  • The character customization system can still yield some pretty awesome looking Guardians.

For those with a more competitive nature, the Crucible — Destiny’s PvP multiplayer mode — awaits. This pits players against one another in glorious combat, and keeps things extra-interesting by tossing vehicles into the mix on larger maps (such as the moon-based level I played here). Players can commandeer large, armed conveyances or deploy their handy Sparrow whenever needed — or they can stick to an on-foot approach to ensure an instant offensive is always an option. The mode I played saw my team capturing and holding three control points, while taking special care to eliminate those who would take over our post.

These are but a few observations I made in my short time with the Beta ahead of its official launch today. Once you’re in, let’s compare notes in the comments! Destiny launches on PS4 and PS3 on September 9th this year, but you can play the Beta starting today by pre-ordering the game, either at retail or on PlayStation Store. See you in the Tower.

  • hurry up & give me my fkin beta since i pre ordered in june

  • @97 same here

  • Man, when is PSN NOT down during something big like this? What use is this exclusivity if you can’t even ****ing play it?

  • I pity anyone that bought this game digitally for the full release in September. Sony are never equipped for big launches. This is happening with a beta, can you imagine the traffic when the full game releases and it’s like 50GB download, etc.

    Oh well….

  • We pay for access to online and then it craps out. I thought our money was required to build up the infrastructure. When will that happen so these issues don’t happen as often?

  • SONY can we get a ****ing update please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So, I figured it out. Go to redeem codes in the PSN. I entered the FIRST code and it took me to the confirmation section to download the beta. It is slow, just be aware. Hope this helps.

  • Where are the effing moderators to discuss this clusterhole?

  • @Sulumon

    They are hiding

  • SONY update please!!!

  • This is awful. I entered in my code and it was accepted. THen when I went to download it it kicked me out of PSN. Now I can’t find it in my downloads page AND it can’t be redeemed “again.”

As someone above mentioned – aren’t we forced to buy into PSN plus in order for them to strengthen their online structure? Clearly there’s no evidence of them doing so. Sony is constantly unprepared for big events like this.

  • I hope there’s more than the alpha had. I really hope.

  • This is a sad day for Sony. How do you receive a L for a beta launch

  • So when will Sony address the issue issue some sort of statement an apology or some sort of explanation of what is going on.

  • I can get on the store but still can’t redeem code

  • And ofc network is down .. cant connect ..cant connect ..and again cant connect !!

  • Just when I’m about to install the beta, what a buzz kill Sony!!!!!!

  • @SukTHEfac

It can be redeemed again. Your situation happened to me 3 times with the same code. The key will work until the confirmation goes through

  • @104 I think that’s why they have the pre-download option, but still don’t think it’s going to make a difference. Definitely buying this on on disc!

  • @purse317 Sony got too arrogant to apologize (they sit on their sales as kings and we players are just their slaves) and admit that they never be able to beat MS on this…

  • I was online to chat with Sony support, and, when I got to the front of the queue (after 40 minutes) I got a message that said there were no representatives to help me and I should try again later. Nice!

  • holy crap its a 14 gig beta

  • i knew i should have stayed a pc gamer….

  • How about getting hands on with those servers so I can remote download this to my PS4 ><

  • I put in one code and was about to download; then the store kicks me outs. Now I can’t even access my shopping cart in the store. This is VERY poor planning on bungie and sony.

  • 1.41/10.97 GB In Progress!

  • Ok now i finally got on the psn store punched in my code got a confirmation the it was for Destiny Beta pressed confirm and it suddenly logged me out. And now when i got in again and tried to repeat the process it told me the code had already been used. But there is nothing in my download. This is unacceptable Sony send me a new code and fix this.

  • PS4 OWNERS HOW TO ACCESS THE BETA

If you can get in the store follow these steps

Get in the store (good luck on that)
Once in go to GAMES – NEW – GAMES – DESTINY BETA ACCESS
    Download (good luck on that)

Eventually you’ll be able to play the game

Geez I should be paid for this since Sid or Sony or whoever should’ve told us this

  • Lemme get this straight we wait months to get to this day and now sony wants to say sorry we have to do maintenance the day of beta. Why not any other day before this!!!????

  • @123 The store is only SONY. Send them tweets, send e-mails, write on each blog, write to bungie about sony problems, write on every single forum or gaming site. Maybe they get the negative publicity they deserve despite their sales!

  • Agreed. You could’ve done maintenance yesterday. You guys knew this was coming. =/

  • that only works if you bought it through the playstation store..

  • I can’t even login to get my code and bungie has not even sent me the code so uh.. yeah not happening….

  • you get the code on bungie website

  • Hey Justin!

Between this and FFXIV we’re going to need to start cloning ourselves to keep up!

  • Long time player, long time supporter.

This is unacceptable, Playstation. This is not your first game launch on PSN, not even your first online test-play for Destiny. The Destiny beta had a beta, it was called the alpha. All of this connecting and downloading should have been planned for and shouldnt be killing the store.

remember, you are now charging us to play online….. no excuses.

  • Guys I found a way around it. Okay listen closely, go to the sony entertainment website http://www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/home/ and sign in the redeem you code there, then it will say successful then you go on ur ps4 and keep pressing the ps store button until it opens, then scroll down to downloads and destiny will be the first one there, and you just hit download and there you go it will instantly start the download, and then you will have the beta. You are very welcome, I know how you guys are feeling but I hope this helps.

  • PS4 OWNERS

If you followed my 126 post you probably got the maintenance error upon download eventually after getting the error again and again and again.

The beta was just added to my notifications downloads without actually clicking on download

Wish you guys all the best and KEEP COMPLAINING TO SONY SO THEY CAN FIX THIS WE PAY GOOD MONEY FOR POOR SERVICE

  • I’m starting to think we pay $5 a month for a sack of potatoes as servers

  • Im extremely upset but kinda happy, ive never been in a forum rant before xD

  • @126 or just go down to your “download list” once you’ve redeemed your code and select it there for download!

  • Sony won’t admit that they messed up. I don’t why anyone is disappointed with them right now – this is always expected.

NO EXPECTATIONS = NO DISAPPOINTMENTS :-)

  • @136 potatoes might even get their work done :D

  • And by the way after the beta downloads and you start the game you have to wait for another 10.97GB to download Lolz not to bum anyone out or nothing.

  • There is no maintenance. That is their default message cause of high traffic on PSN.
Also if you pre-ordered and received a code you have to redeem the code first then go to GAMES – NEW – GAMES – DESTINY BETA ACCESS to download it. I t is stupid that once it downloads 170mb then you have to open the game to download the rest and cant play other games while waiting.

  • I just talked to someone at Sony. They have no idea when the network will be working–said to check every hour on the hour for the network to be up and running. They also said I needed a code even though I bought the game through the PS Store. I actually think he’s wrong there, but whatever. I’m here and I’m waiting…

  • Guys I found a way around it. Okay listen closely, go to the sony entertainment website on your computer, like the sony site without the” store. ” in front of it. and sign in the redeem you code there where it says redeem prepaid card. then it will say successful then you go on ur ps4 and keep pressing the ps store button until it opens, then scroll down to downloads and destiny will be the first one there, and you just hit download and there you go it will instantly start the download, and then you will have the beta. You are very welcome, I know how you guys are feeling but I hope this helps.

  • Greatness Awaits for Maintenance

  • Ok thank god its appeared in my download box. Now if only i can stay logged in long enough to confirm it. Damn.

  • Madness awaits!
