Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

PS4 Logo

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

  • can anyone tell me what the hell is DLNA ?

  • I would like to be able to see when my friends come online… I would also like to be able to have game chat come over both the tv and headset for YouTube recording. I mean both of these are simple what is the problem.

  • How about add HBO GO and make a remote control like on the PS3 so I don’t have to drain my controllers’ battery to watch Netflix. Also, the external hard drive or USB drive would be great. Why make this system go backwards compared to everything the PS3 had?

  • WOW! Tha’s why I sold my PS4 and build a PC… so tired of this,

I am glad I did the switch :)

  • please also add the ability to see when our friends get ONLINE AS WELL!!

  • Also why not allow users to use PS Now games they own digitally on the PS3, be free on PS Now. Im sure there is a way to due that. I do not want to rent a game I own already. It would be nice just to see now recognize I own it on the PSN and let me stream the game for free. Also be cool to swap my PS3 save onto the PS4 HDD.

  • PLEASE I WANT TO KNOW WHEN MY FRIENDS BE ONLINE AND OFFLINE LIKE IN THE PS3.

So please put this options to see the last time he be online, its so important because i need to know when is the last time my son played.

  • Cool features, but why can’t we get much SIMPLER features first? Like the ones we had on PS3 already?

Why can’t we have a “comment” over our names like we used to on PS3?

Why can’t we see alerts when our friends come online?

It would be perfect if you could group friends into different groups “socom friends/clanmates, racing friends, etc” and then you should also be able to choose what friends you want to see notifications when they 1) come online or offline 2) start streaming OR are ALREADY streaming. You shouldn’t have to check the “whats new” section to see a streaming alert.

Oh, and why can’t we VIDEO chat either? PS3 could handle video chat…. why does the ps4 not have this functionality?

  • @101 …….yyyyuuuuuuuuuuuuppp………… Google can. And I can too. ;)

  • PS4 Skype be cool for video chat

  • @101 IBolinha75Br “can anyone tell me what the hell is DLNA?”

What the majority of the PS4’s core audience, and pushes sales, don’t care about. Which while important, and a nice feature for having a media hub, is not essential to play Bloodborne. I’ll take the games please.

To answer your question, it essentially an option to allow folders to be accessed on your network, for media purposes. Videos/Photos/Network. You could set this up on the PS3 via any DLNA service on your computer, and keep your HDD on the PS3 free for games, which was what I used it for, for when I wanted to watch a show/movie on my PS3 with a better T.V., without having to get a USB, or use my computer directly.

Convenient essentially. Just not what someone who is mainly interested in game features should be complaining about. If that is what people want, then why did they buy a PS4? I wanted to play Killzone: Shadowfall and Infamous personally, and look forward to Destiny, Little Big Planet 3, No Man’s Sky…Not the ability to stream the new Linking Park album to my PS4 over the network. I think I can miss that feature for the foreseeable future with little complaint. Their focus should be games.

  • PS4 should run skype, the Vita can why not the parent console?

  • enough sharing , were is the move support games and the media centre apps!!!!!!! that camera is a waist of money , mane you need a mother law suite.

  • @106 bankaischorr514

Discount, sure. But who is paying for those dedicated servers to stream that game for you? Should RedBox allow you to always stream their movies if you buy the disc version forever with no charge? They have to pay for that. It’s not free to host an always available server for you, even if you bought such game.

They have make this profitable. A secondary subscription will be the way to go, assuming the price is right for the value that people feel they get out of it. It does work well, just too costly.

  • Sony should make new games from classic titles they use to pump out. I would love to see Crash Bandicoot make a return. PS1 and PS2 native support be nice, Id like to stream those games for relaxing night chatting with friends on twitch. If they can code the PS1 and Ps2 games for PS3, they can do it for PS4.

  • Arabic Language

we’v been asking this for 3 years

    Seriously SONY ?

  • I would love to see DLNA come to the ps4, external storage support, as well as notifications for friends when they sign in and out of the PS Network. Also I would like to see the ps4 home screen updated so that games and apps can be organized the way we want them. I would thoroughly enjoy Dynamic Themes to make it’s way to the ps4. The blue background and optional music gets dull after so long. Customization is key in my opinion.

  • dude i can’t wait

  • I really don’t get the External HDD Support request. I know I don’t want a bunch of peripherals hanging off my PS4. I will be upgrading the internal drive when needed.

  • I agree customs wallpaper would be nice. Thanks for all the great work share play sounds awesome.

  • @115 bankaischorr514

And they should give us all free money too! And pay for my college tuition. Hey, these things cost money. They aren’t free. They aren’t your slaves. Understand how licensing works maybe, and you’d understand why certain games aren’t available. It’s not just a simple thing they are legally allowed to do, and that’s the major reason it hasn’t happened. I’m sure it is something they are negotiating and while working on getting the support for PS1 games up to scratch, but it’s not a simple copy/paste of the program, and it’s good to go.

Be respectful, and try thinking before you type. And after!

  • Folders or some kind of library management. Download Management. For the love of God…video, music, photo apps, and DLNA. In other words, make the PS4 as good as a PS3 in those aspects and you’re golden.

  • External HDD support, MP3, FLAC music support, MKV and MP4 video support, custom avatar and wallpaper support(the PS3 had this WTF Sony), Folders, Ability re-arrange downloadable content in alphabetical order(don’t want to back to the end of the list just to dl something), Ability to rearrange things in order.

  • This is by far the single greatest feature that any Console has ever seen, and dare I say that not even the mighty PC can readily or easily make this happen. I’m not sure if others found on the internets can quite fathom the possibilities of PlayShare yet, like inviting one of your friends who don’t own a copy of Diablo3 to join a co-op game with you, assuming that’s something that’s allowed. However, at the very least, I’ll never have to speak to friend about much I wish they could try a game they couldn’t afford. I’ll simply invite them to play it firsthand.

    Bravo Sony, you’ve outdone yourself.
I’m sure all of the negative posts have some form of merit, but that doesn’t mean you deserve the belligerent responses seen above. Keep doing what you’re doing, and take the needed time for their requests, because there’s nothing worse than releasing desired features that don’t work. Sometimes the PS Community forgets that.

    Community, be patient.
Who honestly thinks that Sony, after all they’ve done to make us happy, won’t keep trying to do so?
If something can be made better, let’s assume and be patient enough to expect that one day it will be.

  • DLNA, MP3 support please gawd dayum how long does it take to get this ish on the console!? lol

  • Wow I’m sure a lot of stuff will not be mentioned because of copy cats. But add External HDD support i need a bigger HDD.. For more games that are coming!! wink wink:)

  • @ 121 drd7of14 I was not disrespectful and did not use harsh words. I feel they should make games free on Ps Now by check ing to see you own it already by checking License. Everyone has their own opinion or suggestions.

  • @124 V1284

Praise be to some people! Thank you for not being one of the many unappreciative people on this thread. You see through the genius of this announcement, and what it really means. My guess, it hasn’t really sunk in, this feature they announced, to the DLNA posters up above. If they knew what this meant, they would not be complaining so fervently.

Thanks for being a supporter, it let’s them know they are doing something huge. Something right! And something we all didn’t know we were missing, and wanted. It is now something I don’t want any future console to go without. :))

  • @drd7of14. I think it’s debatable whether the majority of consumers want/use DNLA. You can at least fairly say that a majority of hardcore users (the kind that are commenting on a Sony blog) would like to have it. I think as more and more people give up cable and sat tv and move to an all streaming household it will be a more needed feature.

I think it just kind of irks people that features the PS3 had are no longer supported (HBO GO, DLNA, External Hard Drives). It’s obvious Sony was pushing to get the PS4 out the door and to consumers, so they released it without all the features that consumers wanted it to have. It’s just surprising that a year later they have made 20 changes to sharing features and don’t have any updates when anything else is coming.

  • BLUETOOTH CHAT SUPPORT PLEASE!!! GREATNESS AWAITS?Sony, there is nothing great about being forced to use a wired mono earbud!Yes I know about all the wireless headphone options but they don’t interest me.

  • My wife and I both have PS4s in separate bedrooms, would she be able to play my downloaded games that are associated with my account? That’s what we do with our steam library sharing and it sounded like this would be a feature with this update. Am i wrong? Can they only share they game if you are playing it with them?

  • This new firmware does look like it will be good, I’m sure there are plenty more features they withheld to water are pallets till the release.

  • along with myself, there are MILLIONS who do NOT CARE ABOUT SHARE FACTORY, UPLOADING TOO YOU TUBE ETC….

WE WANT OUR OWN GODDAMN MUSIC TOO BE PLAYABLE…WE WANT MP3 & AUDIO CD SUPPORT..

THATS ALL I “BLEEPING” CARE ABOUT., AND I SWEAR TO CHRIST ABOVE, THAT ALL MY FRIENDS ARE THE SAME WAY…. THE PS4 CAME OUT LAST YEAR, AND TOO STILL NOT HAVE AUDIO/MP3 SUPPORT 10 MONTHS LATER IS QUITE FRANKLY,

THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF BULL S#IT…ITS A EASY UPDATE, AS TOLD TOO ME BY MORE THAN 1 PS4 TECH, WHO WHEN PRESSED, ENOUGH, THEY WILL CAVE IN AND AGREE THAT ITS BS AND THEY HAVE, “NO CLUE WTF SONY IS THINKING!”

GET YOUR GODDAMN ACT TOGETHER ITS FKN EMBARRESSING

  • CAN U BE MORE CLEAR ABOUT THIS, “VIRTUAL COUCH”….YOU SAY THAT WE CAN INVITE A FRIEND TOO PLAY THE GAME, EVEN THOUGH THEY DO NOT OWN IT.

SO WHAT DOES THE “INVITED” GUEST HAVE TOO HAVE?

DO THEY NEED A PS4 ALSO?
OR CAN THEY BE INVITED TOO PLAY ON MY PS4, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE A PS3?

    MORE INFO PLEASE….ASAP

  • Dear PlayStation

I am on a blog site and we have discussed many things we would like to see on ps4.
The main feature I am looking for that you all have been silent about is in game mp3 playback.
I really want to be able to listen to my mp3’s while playing a game.

It really makes a game that much more enjoyable to listen to my own music while playing certain Games.
Games like DriveClub and GTA. And even cod multiplayer would be even more enjoyable if I could listen to my own mp3’s while in game

    Thanks,
    BluMatt

  • SharePlay sound awesome guys. What I really would like is Bluetooth chat support for my not so old and very expensive wireless headset (Turtle Beach). Almost 9 month after getting PS4 I still cannot chat to my friends (I can’t do wired chat as my pets chew cables and I’m not shelling out for another headset). DLNA would also be handy. Not fussed about YouTube personally but I know a lot of people do really want this. Looking forward to 2.0

  • I would like to pause downloads and be able to sort them how I want them to download.

  • To those complaining about not getting their feature that they wanted; I’ve been waiting on Share Play since Sony promised it in their February 2013 presentation. They never promised MP3 support, DLNA support–it’s been just assumed that it’d be there because it was in their previous console and people have been requesting it. Since then, Sony has mentioned that they’re looking into it, but from an informed purchase standpoint you can’t say your expectations were based on anything Sony said, such as Share Play. Come v2.00, I’ll consider it a promise fulfilled and look forward to playing any game, multiplayer or no with friends. I hope everyone eventually gets what they want out of the Playstation 4, but it’s foremost a gamer’s console and not the multi-media, near-computer device that the PS3 was. I’m ok with that.

  • @101 – IBolinha75Br

The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is a nonprofit collaborative trade organization established by Sony in June 2003, that is responsible for defining interoperability guidelines to enable sharing of digital media between multimedia devices.

You can access your media on other devices on your Playstation….in other words.

  • I’m getting a bit fed up waiting for the MP3/DNLA Video support. Before every PS4 update since launch there has been a tremendous amount of conversation about “when” they are going to add support. I’m for one getting sick of being disappointed after every update. With each update that goes by with out this support makes a lot of PS4 owners that much more angry. I think Sony owes PS4 owners an explanation. We were supposed to get this support a few months after launch, then we were told the spring, then the summer, then we were told it would come before the games com, now it’s the winter. Once winter comes they’ll promise support for the spring in 2015, then it’ll be the summer, fall of 2015. ENOUGH! When are we getting support for MP3/DNLA/Video? I’m seriously thinking about selling this console and upgrade my PC if we don’t end up with this support for the PS4 in the next few months. This is BS.

  • @138 keef_psn

    I like you Keef. ;)

  • The link will take you directly to the community blog spot because my statement in very long. http://goo.gl/KlnyMM Also, I’ve had absolutely no contact from you guys… I’ve emailed you guys, called and live chatted… I’ve seen nothing done, please help and more importantly RESPOND.

  • What about an Spotify/Pandora app?

  • Sony please tell me that those leaked PlayStation 4 Interface images were real or not because they looked amazing and a huge improvement, if you don’t reply to this I will assume that they are real and you will only disappoint me and countless other PS4 gamers out there when we find out those images turn out to be fake. Thanks

  • @Andrefpvs I agree with you: with need an update that allows multiple accounts on the PS Vita. It’s terrible ordeal all you have to do to change your accounts back and forth, specially compared to the PS3, PS4 and even the PSP.

  • @keef_psn – Some of us have very limited HDMI port space, and a large portion of this community have been calling for multi-media support for MP3s/DNLA/ video for a long time, so much backlash was created on the PS4 not having those features, it pushed Sony on the defensive. What’s going to happen when this part of the community runs out of patience? Quite frankly with now almost a year later without this support, wondering what it’s going to cost Sony going into the holiday shopping season? People are going to start to walk from this console soon. I’m one of them if this continues past November.

  • Scott these features sound amazing however adding features I feel is one peg lower in priorities than fixing bugs.
Can you please get a fix for DVD/Blu-Ray playback issue when a mobile device is plugged into the PS4: error code CE-35486-6

  • Microsoft is killing it on the monthly firmware upgardes
they are listen to the sony gamers more then sony is:

    http://majornelson.com/2014/08/12/kicking-gamescom-2014-social-features-new-ways-watch-tv-usb-dlna-support-coming-soon/

  • Yeah, the lack of any mention of DNLA, MP3 Playback, or external hard drive support is beyond retarded. At least give us something. “Slated for 2015”, whatever. Even XBox wised up and mentioned USB flash drive support in their press conference today.

  • I want a funimation app damnit
