PlayStation TV Arrives Today in North America

PlayStation TV makes its debut today in North America with hundreds of games available to play. Whether you’re using PS TV to play PS4 games in another room of your house through Remote Play, or playing PS Vita hits like Killzone: Mercenary on the big screen, the system has something for everyone. Starting at $99.99 (MSRP) for the standalone system, it’s one of the best deals in gaming. It’s easy to set up, yet offers amazingly deep gameplay. It sits in a special place in the PlayStation platform ecosystem – as it can play titles from PS Vita, PSone , PSP, PS3 (through PS Now), and PS4 (through Remote Play).

Of course PS TV plays entertainment content, including popular movies and TV shows that can be downloaded from PlayStation Store. PS TV will also launch with video streaming apps Crackle, Crunchyroll and Qello, and stay tuned for additional entertainment content we’ll be adding soon to the PS TV lineup.

In addition, PlayStation Now is available on PS TV in much of the mainland U.S. and Canada* and will launch with games for the whole family like Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, Sly Cooper: HD Collection, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

You can also pick up the PS TV bundle we’re offering this holiday, which includes a PS TV unit, DualShock 3 controller, 8GB memory card, and a voucher for The Lego Movie Videogame – all for $139.99 (MSRP).

I hope you’ll get as much enjoyment out of this small, simply amazing platform as I have. Let us know below which PS TV games you’re looking forward to!

*Service not available in all areas. A steady broadband connection greater than 5Mbps is highly recommended. See us.playstation.com/playstationnow for details.

  • Vita TV….that’s cool.

    when’s driveclub getting fixed?

  • I’m not sure why SCEA is even bothering with this. Game compatibility is poor on all of the supposedly supported devices and the app lineup doesn’t exist. It’s not as though Vita is getting notable games that you can play on this either. It’s all b-tier Japanese stuff and indie games you can find on a toaster. Heck, Don even said so himself: big games on Vita are a thing of the past. Streaming is their “solution” to that problem, but why buy one of these or a Vita when Sony is implementing that streaming tech elsewhere?

This thing flopped in Japan despite SCEJA getting literally every PSOne an PSP game on the store compatible with it, supporting it with ad dollars and more than three apps. If it flopped in a market that actually kind of cared about Vita (though Sony is doing its best to make sure they stop) how low is this thing going to sell in a market where the hardware manufacturer couldn’t care less?

I’m saying all of that as a warning to potential customers. SCEA is going to drop this thing so fast. They dropped Vita after 2012 and that was a thing they pretended to care about.

  • So…I totally understand that this unit is essentially a VITA, and I personally have a major interest in getting it for myself. But as the goal of this unit is to be treated as a low-entry family device to enter the PlayStation ecosystem, or at least that’s what I gather, I do believe that a multi-account system is in dire need.

The VITA can stay the way it is, it is clearly a personal device, but much like the PS4, I would strongly suggest a method in the future, to allow for family sharing. Or even non-PS account, local only users, that can access the digital games on the memory card or on the VITA game cards, while having separate profiles for save management and the like.

The PSTV is a brilliant device, and has a huge potential to boost the VITA ecosystem, but I think separating it enough from the VITA in structure is important. It may be a VITA, but it is now a home console. It should be treated as such. At least so that I can let my brothers play, without going on my account to play. There are some great titles, and going offline or never syncing trophies, is just silly.

Thanks SONY! Definitely looking forward to this Christmas purchase!

  • I’d like to get one since I can’t stand the Amazon Fire TV device, but it has to have Netflix and Amazon Prime first and foremost before I buy it. I cut the cord a while ago and those are my main “tv” options right now so I have to have them.

I’ll keep an eye on it and hopefully those will be out soon. Still no clue why this device would be put out into the wild without them when pretty much everything made supports said apps. Time will tell. For those of you getting one, enjoy!

  • No 1080p = deal breaker. Um, isn’t this the year 2014?

  • So id we can’t get WIPEOUT PURE on PSVITA can we play it on PSTV? Also, OFFIICIAL SONY DUALSHOCK 4 CHARGING STATION for AMERICAN consumers, is it ever coming Mr. Mesa Director of PRODUCT PLANNING?

  • To my previous point, even a non-sharing system, easily selectable accounts would be fine in the long-run.

    @29 Cinderkin “…”

He was referring to this point, not enough devices for one account, but having multiple accounts for one device. The process is too inconvenient for a home console. Having to reformat every time. It needs a better system. I’m sure you guys will figure out something.

Let us know if this may be possible or not, down the line. If not, we’ll understand. Sadly, but surely.

  • Quick question, where is the Youtube App that was going to come out this fall?

  • Lastly, I totally understand the media issues much like why not every PSP game is available digitally, or every PS1 game. There are licensing issues with everything people. When Netflix or whatever is approved for the VITA, just because it is very much like the PSTV, it does not mean they can legally support it right away on that device. I’m sure it goes both ways, but don’t assume they just are lazy or something. That is a ridiculous notion. It is coming. I wish it was Day 1 ideally, but it’s not.

  • My primary question is: Is this compatible with the Elgato capture card?

  • The Vita TV is HDCP compliant so you will not be able to capture any gameplay footage without an HDCP bypass/stripping setup.

  • I hope Ys Memories of Celceta gets patches to make support of this. It is one of Vita’s best games.

  • Reading the tech specs page for the Playstation TV, I see that it is supposed to support having a main account and sub accounts. Can anyone verify if this is the case? And if you can create a sub account on the system, would you be able to set it as an account to a foreign region?

  • Cool little TV thing $ony… now where’s my PS4 games (you remember that system right? the $400 system over 10 million people bought?) that are worth buying, and my 2.0 update?

  • @ Don
I think #29 was referring to having to reformat the system to change accounts.
Say that Player A is logged into their account. When they finish, Player B wants to hop on and play for a bit on their account. Not only will Player B need their own Memory Card, but they will have to restore the system to Factory Settings to log in with their account. There’s no simple Log Out of Player A, Log In with Player B option.

  • Don:

Thanks for that – hopefully the SAO:HF compatibility issue will be resolved soon.

And while you’re at it, if you felt like further encouraging Bamco to localize Lost Song (http://sao-lostsong.bngames.net/) next year – and to ask that it too have PSTV compatibility looked after if/when the time comes – that would be good, too!

  • Crunchyroll for the win.

  • Is Terraria compatible? I want to reclaim my PS3 from my son by putting my newly arrived PSTV in his room. That will be hard to do if Terraria isn’t compatible.

  • This is definitely on my list. However, this close to Black Friday I am going to hold off on buying it right away. I figure that chances are between now and then Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Game Stop, or somebody will have it on sale or bundled with a few extra games. I made the mistake of buying a Vita on day one, and lo and behold, the sales/bundles started within a few weeks.

  • Can you easily use a DS4 controller on both systems, or do you have to map/unmap the controller when you move back and forth? For example, say I want to play PS4 in the living room then in the afternoon play in the bedroom.

  • This will come in handy – I have been moving my PS4 up and down the stairs to play Destiny since it came out (better HDTV downstairs living room but I have to go upstairs so not to hog it from my wife). Does it have optical out for my surround sound headphones?

  • will games like Metal Gear Solid, Valkyria chronicles 2, Crash; will ever be added to the ps vita store now that ps tv will have them day one.

  • Any word for a Mexican release? I so want this!

  • Sony is so pathetic, first turns this into an streaming and doesn’t now support it as one.

  • Unfortunately, until this supports multiple accounts (as has been brought up above), this device just doesn’t interest me.

  • Soul Sacrifice Delta DOES work. Not via patch, it has been working since it ever released. Why are you guys so incompetent and not realize does that? Why is the PS Store a mess?

How can you miss this game and list Toro Network instead that you don’t even bother updating anymore.

  • DEAL BREAKER WITH PS VITA GAME RESTRICTION! Killed my purchase… Oh well back to PS4.

  • The Vita’s, and now this, #1 reason for failure… the insanely expensive proprietary memory cards. As long as I am a slave to needing a card that costs as much as this device, I am in no hurry to buy in. 8GB is nothing in todays games unless all you DL and play are indies.

  • Good thing I didn’t open box yet… back to store it goes… No multi-user… pfft…

  • Im sorry Sony but the stream network is garbage not to mention the ps now “beta” prices, the sad account management and the lack of vita support. In my humble opinion and after watching the “vita Tv” is just another way to show that you only have indies, crappy remakes/jrpgs and bad ports for the vita community not to mention the crappy stream as backward compatibility.

device resolution 0, stream 0, Single Account 0. Overall 0/10 still waiting the greatness.

  • I preordered this thing… got it, brought it home… and when I got it all set up and everything… I tried playing my games on it. Afterward, all I could think was… “What a piece of junk…” I have two games in my whole library that actually work on this thing right now. The only one that is a vita game is Persona 4 Golden. (Lego The Movie The Game I’m not counting) Uncharted: Golden Abyss of all games, doesn’t work. (its not because of the touchscreen thing. It has a setting where you can emulate the Vita’s touchpad input) MGS: HD Collection doesn’t work, of all of my digital PSP games, none of them will work on it… however my one PS1 game will work! (Metal Gear Solid) … That I could just as easily have played on my PS3… don’t waste your money on this thing. Until they get a bigger and better supported library for it

  • Did the Playstation TV sell out quickly on Amazon? I preordered mine back in August, but i’m still having to wait until Oct 22 to get mine.

  • I really want to pick one of these up, but the sole reason why I want one is to play Lumines: Electronic Symphony on my TV. That game isn’t even supported, which is a huge deal killer for me. Shame :(

I’m guessing the touch screen functionality is holding it back? Even though the only function it uses is menu control and unleashing your special power, which I believe is also mapped to a button. *shrug*

  • I want my MTV…..

  • PLEASE I need an answer to the following from anyone that might know.

I am subscribed to PS+ for almost 3 years. Although that I do not own a PS VITA, all those years I was adding to my download list all the VITA titles that was offered for free through PS+. Now I believe that I will have a change for playing all those titles just buy buying a Playstation TV.

Since all those games are in my download list, would I be able to download them to the Playstation TV and play them? Is the PS VITA version of the game that is in my download list compatible with the Playstation TV, or I need to download a different version of the game which only works in Playstation TV?

So my question is: Since I haven’t bought those games, but I only have them in my download list (and through the PS store is not listed for free anymore), can I just download the PS VITA version through my download list, or do I have to buy each title again in order to be able to download the Playstation TV version of each game ? (Since I do not own the title, although that it is in my download list, in the PS Store it is listed with a price tag since the title was removed from the PS+ list of the month)

  • I went to the store today to pick up both the PSTV and Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus on the vita however when I got there I asked the employee whether he knew if I could use a ps3 or ps4 controller to play vita games and he didn’t know. So i went back home, looked around the internet, and can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I don’t even know whether Senran Kagura is compatible with the PSTV. I really would like to buy these products but Sony makes it very tough when they put out such little info on their own site and to retailers.

So again, my question is; If I purchase the Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus “Let’s Get Physical” bundle for the ps vita can I use my dualshock 3 or 4 controller to play the game using the PSTV?

    • Still checking on this title. Once we can confirm compatibility you will be able to use both your DS3 and DS4 controllers to play the game on PSTV.

  • looks like a lot of people are unhappy with it, I just bought mine on the way to work and im squirming in my desk right now to get home and plug it up lol but I will say the PS VITA its self is an acquired taste (IMO) and I do really appreciate it there are a lot of great titles that felt like they could be better on a large screen and not to mention the starting titles that are compatible should keep me busy enough until there are more available. You will not hear me complain because a year ago I thought that I would not even be able to have one due to it only being in Japan (PS VITA TV) , and for that SONY, I say thank you.

  • Is Sony going to increase the Devices per Account limit to 4? I have a PS3/PS4/Vita. I’m probably not going to buy a PSTV, but even if I wanted to it seems like I wouldn’t even able able to register it with PS+ anyway, right?

  • From the FAQ:

Does PS TV support external HDMI-based game capture devices?
PS TV supports HDCP (copy protection). HDCP cannot be turned off.

Please give us the option to disable HDCP the same way it was done on PS4.

  • I love how in the compatibility list (Here: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5376) says that F1 2011 is compatible with the Playstation TV yet when i try to update it,it finds no updates nor does it launch the game, instead it tells me quote “This application can not be used with this system”,really guys? why not update the list when the games are confirmed bt you (sony) or the said publisher-developer responsible for said game(s) confirms otherwise to you (sony),this was honest irriresponsible on your part sony to not make sure said game(s) were confirmed for being compatible with the system before posting the game(s) on the list =\

  • So is there a 3 system limit to your PSN account? i ask because i have my PS3, PS4 and Vita… will i be able to get my PS tv as well, or will that be beyond the limit?

  • I’ll echo the sentiments about multiple accounts and Hulu/Netflix support being a necessity. You’ve heard that already; but I think it’s important to hear it from many of us because these are oversights that need to be fixed SOON, and it’s going to hurt early adoption of the microconsole.

Here’s something that will be really important for Remote Play. We need to connect to the PS4 at the login screen. A double punch to the gut is that not only can we not use multiple accounts on our Vitas/PS TV’s, but in Remote Play we’re married to whatever account is married to our PS TV / Vita. My wife uses my PS4 as well, uses her own account; and has saved game files associated with her account. If she connected via remote play at the login screen, she could log in to her account and play her favorite games using her savegame files. As it is now, she can’t. Essentially, this ‘family’ microconsole only effectively works with one member of the family, and that’s an oversight.

I pre-ordered it, I’m happy to have it. But please Sony; make it a priority to get streaming content and multiple-accounts (at least for Remote Play) on the docket soon!

  • Launching this new platform with only Sony videos and part of the Vita library is bound to fail.

Add Netflix, Hulu,Amazon Video, NBA TV, MLB TV, NHL, and NFL then you can beat Amazon FireTV, Apple TV, and Roku immediately.

  • I havent read it anywhere. Just need a clarification.

I have a PS$ and was going to buy the PSTV for my daughter for xmas. Will I be able to use the PS4 on one tv while she plays on another tv? Or is the PSTV to be able to access it on a different tv and “take control” of the PS4?

    • Yes your daughter will be able to play games compatible with PSTV on another TV. The PSTV will also be able to “take control” of the PS4 via PS4 remote play and you’ll be able to play PS4 games on the other TV.

  • From what I understand if this can stream the ps4 like the vita can you not just use the Netflix app on the ps4 until they release the native app on the device? I don’t use Netflix so I can’t confirm it works but seems to me a lot of people want Netflix on the device won’t this work till the apps ready.

  • PS4 Destiny remote play is sluggish.wired connection same switch. what say you?

  • @catalyst no you will not both be able to use the ps4. The pstv streams the same as the vita your basically playing the ps4 just on another screen so only one person can play on it streaming or otherwise.

  • VI_timmy Thanks. Thats what I figured, but just hadnt read any type of confirmation. Just didnt want to buy it with certain expectations and find out after the fact.

  • @94 netflix remote play doesnt work.”cannot display the current screen from the PS4 system using remote play.”

  • @jay_jon I have slow Internet 15mbs wired and my vita streams destiny fantastic the only lag I get is when I go outside for a smoke but even then it’s still more then playable. And I have me and my wife’s phone on the same wifi and her tablet or laptop as she’s usually watching TV on those witch eat a lot of bandwidth and my TV and surround sound on that wifi. I just use a crappy linksys router I got like 5 years ago doesn’t even have n or ag. Also it’s a brick house witch 8th a lot to go through.
