PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • Can you show a preview of how the new library system looks?

  • Not sure why that double posted, sorry.

  • Skype can easily come to PS4. Skype is owned by Microsoft, but they are pretty idependent as a company/developer. Skype is on rival (non-Windows) platforms, so why not put it on PlayStation as well?

  • Bring Twitch/Ustream streaming and Share functionality to Vita and PlayStation TV. This should be a standard feature for all future PlayStation devices.

  • Also, allow us to use the Share features with PS Now games.

  • When does it come out?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Hi!
I have some ideas that I think they’re useful,
    1. release playstation app for windows phone. some of us (like me) are using WP and we need PS app too. so I think it’s a good idea to have it on WP.
    2. support persian language.

  • So excited thanks Son is everything we’ve waited for I’m mostly excited for YouTube and the mom files player thanks again!!

  • Cool, now hurry the f*** up Sony. Thanks.

  • hi just brought a ps4 but very unhappy that i cant play music or had photos or other stuff i had on my memery stick .please tell me they will be added soon kind regards

  • Instead of putting effort into an already antiquated technology (ref DLNA) why not allow us to install xbmc/plex on the ps4?

  • Hi,

This is a great update! I hope they can add support for DLNA on ver. 2.0.

Also, I’ve been having issues with 2k15 on my PS4 white Destiny Ed. It gives random error CE-34878-0 on the game. If I play other game, my console works fine. I dunno what’s wrong, send a bunch of error reports with attached Video Preview but no one contacted me yet.

I hope it also fix the issue on NBA 2k15.

    More Power!

  • when does the update release date????

  • when does the update release date please??

  • Ok everyone knows the details!! When is the RELEASE DATE?!?!?!

  • I hope that Playstation will utilized the voice commands during the game itself. That would be so much easier to capture screenshots and start video clips.

  • I hope that Playstation will allow the user to utilize the voice commands during the actual gameplay itself for screenshots and video clips.

  • I would also love to see another Vigilante 8 on the PS4!

  • YES! music player! now i can play play pvp while listening to “Still” by Ghetto Boys!

    IT IS ON!

  • Is anyone working on individual audio for splitscreen multiplayer gaming? Sound is a great advantage in games such as shooters or survival. It would be incredible if each player could have they’re own headset with audio unique to there specific character

  • is there a fix coming for PS4 messaging system, for the last month and a half sending and receiving messages on my ps4 or on my phones PS APP takes between 5 to 20 minutes ( had one take 35 minutes to go through ) it is not my internet as i have had ps4 since release and have never had issues sending messages, they use to go through instantly, all of my friends are having issues with slow messaging or messages not being able to be sent .

  • Hey scott i know you must be sick of hearin this but please add VIDEO SUPPORT ASAP, it will be a great day for ps4 when that happens.

  • I really hope you intend to fix the bottle necking on peoples systems.

In general I get speeds of 100mbps on my pc. As soon as I log onto the ps4 it’s cut right in half. This is because YOU bottle neck peoples connections or there’s a bug with the network cards on the ps4.

    Please get this issue fixed.

    Thank You.

  • This sounds like a minor update to me. What everyone really wants is DLNA, a feature the PS3 has had for years! And where is HBO GO? Another feature already on the PS3.

  • video support!!!

  • Update is awesome. But I would like to give some ideas that Sony could look into implementing in the future on the PS4. If that is ok.

Some of the main features I wouldn’t mind getting in an update/Or Would love to get. Would be: Early Access, here is a brief statement of what Early Access I would like on PS4.

These are games that evolve as you play them, as you give feedback, and as the developers update and add content.

Another feature i wouldn’t mind getting on PS4. Would be some sort of Greenlight Feature:
Here is what Greenlight would do:

Greenlight is a system that enlists the community’s help in picking some of the new games to be released. Developers post information, screenshots, and video for their game and seek a critical mass of community support in order to get selected for distribution.

And last feature I would love to see on PS4. Would be the ability to vote for a select games that Sony comes up with or so. And have the gamers vote for that month’s PS Plus line up for PS3, PS4, And PS Vita whichever games come out on top will be on PS Plus that month. Kind of like a Gamers choice kind of thing i guess. For example.

    anyway awesome update.

  • X86 Architecture has never been easier to develop for…. Sony’s own Cell Processor was a nightmare onto itself and they churned out multimedia features and functionality immediately which has been the standard with every Sony device made MYLO,PSP/GO/VITA or any other multimedia device manufactured by Sony in the past why take away our freedom and lock these basic features out??? Xbox One which is struggling has managed to give it’s user’s MKV playback which is basically pirate format gold! and Sony now is telling us we can’t watch movies unless we rent them or use Netflix or go buy Blu-Ray movies no CD playback because they wanna make us pay for the privilege monthly with music unlimited which has **** selection! Just Because your in the lead it doesn’t mean you should become Complacent,Cheap and Lazy! GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT SONY…..

  • Thanks Sony, for the update. However, any news on updating the psn so it performs better on the PS4 store? It doesnt happen all the time, but some times when you log in after playing a game and enter the store, you get a hanging blue screen. Which results in having to tun the system off and back on for it to function. I can wait on DLNA but we need more codecs on our ps4. Lastly I know its not up to you guys, but please try to expedite an HBO go app on ps4 sooner rather than later.

For the Vita I just need PS2 classics.

  • A very cool codename you picked for the new OS Update, Sony!
I really can’t wait to get it on my PS4, I hope it get released before the end of this month, and to be honest I have my high hope to see it tomorrow on Monday.

  • @971

You can blame Yosp for not Putting Ea access on the Ps4 as he is one that stop it didn’t find as a value to the PS4 owners (lmfao what a joke )

Sony needs lots to catch up to Xbox One updates ( they are way way behind )

A thing that needs to be Implemented on PS4 is a Activity feed to comment to friends

  • Can’t wait to use my anime background. :)

  • Little question you said at E3 that came out in the fall of 2014?
Now we are in the fall so there is no exact date?

  • Great to see the new updates coming. Couple things I’m still wanting that my PS3 can do.
    1) DNLA support
    2) Bluetooth media remote support specifically support for Logitech’s Harmony hubs and remotes.
    3) Music CD support

Nice to hear an official YouTube App is coming. Additional App support would be an added plus. Better browser support would also be nice.

  • PS4 update 2.0 coming Nov 15, celebrating one year of greatness with USB mp4 video support. Right before GTA V release date.
announcement coming once update is ready.

    My Guess…

  • “we don’t want you guys playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update of the year.” I smell a pre call of duty AW release… DUB STEP WITH CALL OF DUTY DAY ZERO LET THE USB PRELOADING BEGAIN…

  • What about Video chat I understand Skype is a Microsoft product but you have it on the Vita if not Skype how about Google’s Hangouts or Apple’s facetime. and would love a UFC fight pass app

  • Great Sony, iam hyped for this haha. When you guys put friend notifications? I wanna see when a friend comes online.

  • I wish there was ps1 classic games also for ps4 at store i would for sure buy some masterpieces!

  • Hi Sony,

Please bring entertainment apps like HBO GO, Xfinity TV, and Showtime Anytime on Sony PS4.

It was sad to know that your competitor XBOX has received three major entertainment apps – Comcast XFINITY TV, HBO GO and MLB.TV

    http://gdn9.com/story-27556-More-Video-Apps-for-Xbox-360-Include-Xfinity-HBO-Go-MLB-tv.html

  • I’ve noticed a few things. First comments are being replied to less and less. Second… my people have brought up a USB video playback option (including .mkv support) and this question keeps getting dodged which really bothers me. If I had known that I couldn’t use my ps4 as a media station like I could with my ps3 I wouldn’t have wasted my money on the ps4. It’s sad when the older gen console is better than the new for a lot of things. My next problem is that ps4 is not backward compatible yet for a ridiculous rental fee you can use the Now app to rent, not own, ps3 titles. If you can manage to do that then why not out the ps3 games in the ps store for purchase?

  • And last but certainly not least it would be a nice feature to be able to pause a game, go into standby mode (incase you have to go out or have something to do), and return from standby mode to pick up from where you left off at. At this point I’m seriously considering selling my ps4 and switching to X box one. Although they are lacking a bit in the hardware department they seem to be lightyears ahead in every other aspect :S

  • Finally! I really would like the ability to change my themes. I do wish there’s a way to carry forth the themes I bought on the ps3, but no matter :)

On another note, there’s something I have been wondering. I have been playing destiny a lot lately and the chat system on ps4 has been good with the prioritising of chatting. But is there a way to turn in game sounds completely off? It seems adjusting the sounds bar (for the prioritising) just makes people talking so much louder. I don’t need people to be loud, I just want the ingame sounds to be completely gone.

  • What are you all thanking for? Im not sure Im reading the same article as everyone else…………….

    Nothing revolutionary here.

  • Here are the features I am most interested in.
I would like to see some vastly improved trophy features and messaging features.

I would like the same filtering, sorting and indexing of my trophies on all my PlayStation platforms. Currently only PS3 has the greatest feature set while the VITA and PS4 can sort on rarity only.

I heard a rumor at one point about possibly being able to implement trophies on older generation titles. With PS NOW, if I could get trophies on PS1 games, I would totally take advantage of that.

I would also like to have messages in a central inbox, rather than get new message prompts on every system every time I get a message. That’s incredibly annoying.

  • When will we be getting this update? By the way thank you Sony we all been talking about some of these features. Just didn’t make sense why the ps3 had the music playback on release and ps4 didn’t.

  • This is a good update, but can we maybe get a better way of organizing our games/apps in the future? It’s not horrible scrolling constantly from left to right all the time for different games. But it would definitely make it easier to categorize games under a games folder like we have for video apps etc.

  • The biggest update of the year would be with simply one feature…. PSN display name changes.
I wouldn’t care if it was the last update for the PS4 until whatever console is next no matter the amount of bugs just as long as i can change my name i gave myself when i was like 12 as of which i have got a new gamer tag i want but do not want to lose any of my current progress in trophies

  • I have music on my PS Vita so can i connect it to the PS4 upload the my music to it

  • So I’m assuming this means we will be able to use custom entrance themes for our superstars in WWE 2K15?

  • Please, Sony I would appreciate video chat for me just like what the PS3 had. I would love you so much more if you guys hear me and add this feature in.
