PS4 20th Anniversary Edition

Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.

20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!

Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.

We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D

But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!

How to pre-order in the US: PS4 20th Anniversary Edition will be available in very limited supply for pre-order starting Saturday, December 6th. Please watch the PlayStation Experience keynote starting Saturday morning at 10:00am Pacific Time to learn more.     Happy anniversery! I feel old now remembering playing Battle Arena Toshinden and Wipeout on the original PSX! Anyone else with me on that? I love this color scheme on the PS4 :)

    Take a $10 PS1, disassemble it with a hammer/other tool, tape it to a PS4 console, BOOM, Playstation 1 themed Playstation 4. Also works for the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3. Also a much higher chance of getting one!

    Please allow us to buy that controller separately! I’ve always wondered why there has never been a “Throwback Gray” color for PS2 and PS3 controllers.

    UGH!!! WHY LIMITED?!?!?! I litterally just bought a PS4 last week but would STILL buy this if it’s available. This was an easy money maker for Sony. Wish I could give them more money.

    So what’s the significance of the number of consoles? Twelfth month, third day? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to make 20,000 of them for the 20th anniversary?

    I’m more interested in if the grey controller will be released, because I would much rather have that as a 2nd controller than any of the other available colors.

    A new Wipeout game would be a good way to celebrate. Evolution is around (I could name others), but Studio Liverpool isn’t; that is just wrong.

    The console looks sick. Great job Sony. On the games front, PS1 turns 20 today, and there are NO PsOne Classics on sale this week? How’d you miss that opportunity?

    I probably won’t get this, considering I am getting one on Boxing Day after Christmas…

    Anyone who gets one though, have fun! :)

    Although, I wish I could have one of those, since I enjoyed the PS1 when we first got one!

    Crash Bash, Spyro 3, Metal Gear Solid… Oh my god, the list goes on… :)

    If I were to pre order one of these, do they come out before or after Christmas?

    Damn…what a BOSS PS4…looks very sleek….the DS4 is really awesome on PS1 colors.Thats a real treat to your fans Sony,I wish I could get one of these but I just bought my PS4 3 weeks ago.

    Whoever came up with this needs to give themselves a serious pat on the back. Multiple pats. Awesome idea. You know what would be even more awesome, though? Let the console itself remain Limited Edition, but release the glossy detachable part as a separate product. That way, those of us who miss out on the LE console can still show our PS colours on our own units. That’d be great.

    I just got the Destiny white bundle a few weeks ago!!! Arg!!!

    I’m going to try to get this, it’s just too momentous to miss. Ridiculously limited production. The EU blog says the price is 499 in Euros. Not sure what that means in dollars, but doesn’t matter, I’m going to try to get one even if it’s at original phat PS3 prices, adjusted for inflation.

    How can we watch the PSX on Saturday if we’re not there? Will it be broadcast on the blog here? Meaning, probably won’t work?

    Man, I still remember when we got our PS1! We were kind of poor, so getting a new system was this big, MASSIVE deal for us! I remember, we got Crash Bandicoot 2 and Final Fantasy VII, and it was just a total game-changer. Been a Playstation fan ever since.

    Bummer my PS3 got stolen, and I’m too broke to buy a PS4 now. Man, though… that thing looks so awesome, especially the button-symbols being etched on everything. Half tempted to take out another student loan, just to buy one of these bad boys! :P

    Don’t get me wrong this bundle is really awesome and a great way to celebrate 20 years of PlayStation but to make it a very limited edition is just not worth it. If you want to celebrate a product lasting for 20 years you should make it readily available to the customers who have supported you the entire way, not create something that so very few will be able to obtain. I feel punished for purchasing my PS4 at launch and being a loyal customer.

    ive been dreaming of a ps1 inspired ps4 to have as a throwback, not to mention ive considered vinyl wrapping my ps4 in grey… but to have an official ps1 grey ps4? this is so awesome, thank you

    i just need to know where to buy… im going to guess it carries a $449 price tag as it has the camera and stand

    i am curious why the led lights for the light line on the ps4 werent changed from blue to light green and match the ps1’s power button?

    Just awesome! Although I won’t probably get one, since there’ll be so very few of these guys for sale… Anyway, I especially loved the DualShock color, wish it would be sold separately from now on !! Keep on rockin’ PS !!

    Wow… This is just…wow.

    It really saddens me to see so many MINDLESS DRONES…just 100+ braindead sheeps celebrating a mega-corporation’s accomplishment. -_-

    They just change the color of a console and stick a shiny little piece of plastic with “20th Anniversary” in it…and everyone forgets that PS4 doesn’t have DLNA…nor backwards compatibility…or the ability to play mp3s…and that atm they are breaking more than solving with their “firmware updates”. Not to mention FORCED (and crappy) PS+…and a somewhat tiny and flimsy library for a 1-yr old “super-console”.
    Nah…let’s just give Sony a piece of cake and “celebrate” with them how they went downhill for the last year or so…by buying yet another unnecessary console…at an inflated price.
    That could be our way to say “THANK YOU, DADDY” for always replying to people’s comments and giving us an awesome Black Friday Sale…oh, wait… =\
    PSTV…PS Now…be ready for a “PS Watch” in the near future. They are just making stuff up at this point…just to milk all the fat-wallet zombies out there…meanwhile Vita is (almost) a DEAD portable console. And some people still say “Thank You Sony”?? What th–!? o.O

    And the worst part is that people are just saying the most idiotic things! It’s ok (if your wallet’s overflowing with cash) to want a little new toy…but some comments are painting this as if it were the 2nd coming of Christ or something.
    It’s just THE SAME CONSOLE with a new color scheme, for God’s sake! >_>

    Un-be-lie-va-ble… some people desperately need to experience an economic crisis and wake up and smell the coffee. Maybe that way they’ll be able to live in the REAL WORLD, with their feet on the ground, and not in The Matrix, congratulating corporations basically just for taking our money.

    Kudos to #50 & #125 for…you know…actually USING their brains and not behaving like cattle just following the butcher to the slaughterhouse. ;)
