Bringing The Banner Saga to PS Vita and PS4

Lance James's Avatar Posted by Community Director, Versus Evil

The first thing we have to say is “thank you” to every single fan of The Banner Saga who has helped raise the profile of the game and has supported the Stoic team from the start. Your passion for The Banner Saga and the way you have helped spread the word has been instrumental in the decision to bring this amazing and unique game experience to PS4.

We’re also excited and honored to have PlayStation announce that the game is also coming to PS Vita at the recent PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas this past weekend. Our friends and partners in crime at Stoic (who just announced The Banner Saga 2 at the Game Awards in Las Vegas last Friday) are some of the nicest, most talented, and dedicated game makers you’ll ever meet, and we couldn’t be happier for them. The team at Stoic took some time out of their busy schedules to tell you a bit more about the Vita version below.

Being able to bring The Banner Saga to Vita is especially exciting since the fans have been asking for it for a long time, and it’s a natural fit for the game as well as Vita. The Banner Saga is often described as like reading a good book, because players often get engaged in the story and have a hard time putting it down.

Vita will allow players to continue their journey when they leave their homes. Stoic initially designed the UI and the gameplay with the idea of mobile devices in mind, and the Vita is no exception as the gameplay, UI, and design all work extremely well on the platform. The idea of holding The Banner Saga in your hands and utilizing both the Vita’s controls and its touch surfaces while being able to move about freely in the real world is something we’re really keen on developing and seeing in action in 2015.

The Banner SagaThe Banner Saga

Another thing that’s exciting for us is to bring that old-school style of gaming back to the modern age. We’re big fans of games such as Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, and The Banner Saga was heavily influenced by how those games operated. We wouldn’t be here without those great games that really proved handheld tactics games had an audience and a right to be there.

We really love the idea of being handheld and paying homage to those classic, turn-based tactic games of the past in addition to hopefully giving gamers a new take on the genre with our own game. The award-winning art combined with the excellent story of The Banner Saga creates a wonderful world that we have seen capture people’s hearts and we hope to continue that on PS4 and PS Vita in 2015.

The Banner Saga

Finally, we’ve got a lot of big things coming down the road for The Banner Saga and we hope you continue to interact with us via Facebook and Twitter. We really can’t thank you enough for all your valuable feedback.

That’s it for now, but we’ll be back soon! Happy holidays from Stoic and Versus Evil!

Are both Banner Saga 1 & 2 coming to PS4/Vita this year? Or are you just aiming for the first?

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see The Banner Saga announced for the Vita! That system is the perfect platform for RPGs and Tactical RPGs, and the touch interface should prove perfect for interacting with the game’s systems. It looks gorgeous and should give Vita owners a meaty console-like experience on the go, which is what we continue to ask Sony to provide for us. Looking forward to losing myself in this beautiful world you guys have built!

I’ve been waiting for this game to make it to Playstation since I first saw it, and never lost faith it would happen. Awesome, the vita is a perfect fit for TBS, thank you guys.

For everyone asking for Banner Saga 2 on the Vita, the answer is simple….

Buy the first when it launches and the developer will see the support and bring the sequel there as well.

No sane developer will turn down potential customers if they are there, waiting to pay for the product.

First off very excited for this. Heard about it a few months ago and was super sad my computer can’t run anything. But now it’s coming to vita & ps4 so I’m a happy camper.

Question? Will it be cross-buy? Or some kind of discount if you get both versions?

Thanks for bringing Banner Saga to the PS4/Vita. I am genuinely interested in this game. Looking forward to playing it D1. If you do offer Cross-Buy please incorporate a Cross-Play feature so we can upload our saves to the cloud and then download it to continue on the other console. Beautiful game by the way.

I backed Banner Saga on Kickstarter, hoping it would come to Vita. I’m so glad that it finally is officially announced.

I do hope that it is cross-buy!

Will there be cross-save between the versions so I can play on Vita during my commute, and then switch to the big screen once I get home?

Will we be able to import out save game from Banner Saga 1 into Banner Saga 2?

Thanks again for listening to fans! and to TPP for whatever they did to strike a deal with all these great developers! :)

For cross save and cross buy – still unknown at this time!

But yes, you will be able to carry over your caravan/story in to Banner Saga 2. If you haven’t finished the first game you’ll have the option to start Banner Saga 2 with a default story/caravan.

This game looks beautiful! Reminds me of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons.

Are the characters all hand-drawn or did you come up with some spiffy rendering engine to get the old cartoon effect?

All hand drawn :) Arnie spent a lot of time working on them, but they all came out looking great and truly works of art!

Thanks for bringing this game over to the Vita, ever since I’ve heard about it this game has always held my interest. Unfortunately I don’t have a Steam account and gaming on mobile systems like iOS and Android don’t appeal to me at all since a simple OS update can pretty much break any game at any time. But the Vita is definitely a device I would purchase this game on and hopefully it’ll do well enough to warrant the sequel in the future.
