PlayStation Plus: January’s Free Games

It’s almost time to ring in another New Year, so let’s take a peek at what Plus members can play to kick off 2015.

PlayStation 4 owners can leave their pink neon mark on the city of Seattle in inFAMOUS: First Light, a standalone expansion to inFamous: Second Son that outlines the backstory of the troubled conduit, Fetch. Additionally, there’s The Swapper, where you’ll use a cloning gun to solve puzzles in hopes of getting yourself off a creepy space station. On PS3, you can unleash a lot of chaos in an open-world via Prototype 2 or take a trip down memory lane with the revamped classic platformer DuckTales Remastered. Finally, Vita owners can nab Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition so they can enjoy some first-person shooting on the go, as well as test their arcade game skills with the single-screen platformer Whoa Dave!

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting January 6th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Please make The Duke work on PS TV…

  • Not a bad choice actually…. But I already have the disc copy of Prototype 2…… In fact, I already beaten Prototype 2 and it’s challenges.

  • Duke on the go! Whoa, Dave! sounds good to me too. I already have Duck Tales, but those that don’t should check it out. And is The Swapper cross-buy?

    ♡ THANKS ♡
    (°~°) HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

  • I already have First Light, but still, great monthly games. Thanks.

  • Duke Nukem is a nice surprise.

+ Hefestus91 Resogun on Vita is fixed. Add PS3 and Vita versions to your cart on the web store and repurchase to get the fixed license, then delete and reinstall on Vita.

  • excellent month.

very excited to play first light. just finished second son 3 weeks ago.
    the swapper is redeem worthy.
ducktales i already have. bought day 1 – it was a lot of fun and personally the best game on this list.
prototype 2 i may play. it’s been on my radar for quite awhile. backlog has increased.
duke nukem – wow this is huge for the vita. haven’t been this pumped since velocity 2x.
whoa dave is redeem worthy. looks like it could be good for 1-2 hours.

collectively this has been the best month across all platforms.

  • Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition for ps plus and on my vita?! SOLD!!!!

  • @56 that is a workaround. And though it does work, RESOGUN is not “fixed” on vita. It’ll probably be a month until it actually is.

  • Can’t wait for first light if I like it I will get infamous I have so many games and never have time to finish any of them any more not sure why I keep buying them

  • At least first light sounds good

  • Great job!

  • meh not much i want but freez Don’t really want to buy+sub but XRD isnt free online play, add games like chess, pool, strike suit zero, transistor

  • It looks like 2015 is starting off really well! My only thing is now I just feel sad that PS3 is going to be gone by year’s end! It was a fun console while it lasted and I only hope that it ends with a big bang!!

  • Decent month. Had decided to purchase The Swapper for Vita if it was included in the holiday sale so this is a great bonus for me, thank you. Already own Infamous First Light but great for those who don’t, especially if they haven’t played Second Son yet (I actually prefer Second Son, not because of the game size, I feel it makes better use of the impressive open world better than First Light).

  • I’ve already got Ducktales and The Swapper on PC, and I have no desire to play either Vita games in this lineup. First Light and Prototype 2 are good offerings, so I may renew my PS Plus for those, since I ran out of PS Plus in December.

I wish Vita would get some bigger games offered, why not offer some older PSP games, or some classics to break up the constant indie offerings.

  • finally a decent month.

  • I’m gonna straight up massacre some Duck Tales bruh!

  • Already have 3 of the games but I will enjoy Duke Nukem on my vita now. I would love to see Tokyo Jungle on my vita though.

  • Cool! I was waiting for Duke Nukem 3D Megaton edition for my Vita! I was ready to buy it but getting it free with PS Plus is just too cool! :)

And InFamous First Light is nice too. Having finished Second Son recently, I was interested in playing it since then. Real nice!

  • @saab01

    patience, patience

Almost every resident evil has been free through out the years..RE1,2,3 free 4 was 11 bucks discounted. 5 was free and 6 was like 12 bucks discounted..its bound to be free…just wait for the remake to come out and maybe capcom will have a sale.

BF3 was free a while back and 4 is bound to follow.

  • How more free game since Sony took longer then they needed to get psn back up

  • Awesome line up. I was actually going to buy Duke Nukem for Vita, now I don’t have to. Thank you Sony.

  • Another terrible month!! I already have First Light and Swapper! Give us RETAIL releases instead like you used to! Preferably obscure ones!

  • Looks like a good month all around for me in the free game arena. I’m excited.

  • Is this bc the system was down?

  • A great lineup for January!

Apparently, it’s a “terrible” month yet you have 2 out of the 6 games and 2 of the remaining 4 are retail. What type of clown logic is this!?!?

  • Not a bad list but something does need to be done for people who’ve purchased this content before. Many of these titles were discounted at launch for plus members along with a buy 4 get $10 back deal so we the super loyal brough yhem and now the are free. It really wasn’t that long ago the Swapper and First Light were discounted for plus members for example. Somethin about that doesn’t seem right.

Also that survey really needs to be done about your survey. First we never EVER hea the results even months or years later so how do we know your listening. Seconds as a IE statistician it is poorly designed for gathering data qualitatively. If I’m disatisfied with a game why not ask why for example. It seems to be designed to gather very basic data and compile numbers based on that data why not go further?

  • thanks for duke nukem on the go.

  • Also tell Ryan his “The Drop” needs to follow your desin with everything layed out evenly with pics and descriptions in line with one another and equal spacing that follows. His was a novel idea but looks bad compared to your simpler approach.

  • @3 Duke Nukem has many games starting in 1991. Duke3D came out in 1996 and has many variations of it for ps1, pc, mac, xbla and now psn.

@64 Sony said they’ll support ps3 as long as they can.

    @22 Its been delayed

53 The Swapper looks to be crossbuy.

  • thank you :D
please make a ps plus subscribe sale

  • I haven’t really gotten around to playing 2nd Son, will I still be able to enjoy 1st Light’s story by itself?

  • Still no retail games for the Vita. I’ll claim the games before my sub expires on Jan 15th and won’t renew until we start getting some love for the Vita. The PS3 offering (infamous 2) is a bargain bin game I can get for less than 15 dollars and actually own.
The rest I already played on other platforms or I’m not interested in.
Good thing there’s no shortage of videogames companies fighting for my money. I spent 60 dollars on Nintendo e-shop deals these holidays while I still have 40 sitting on my wallet waiting for a good sale.
You need to step it up Sony.

  • Time to go take Ducktales Remastered off my Steam wishlist.

Hope I won’t be too in the dark playing Prototype 2 without playing the 1st one. Though is ironic to finally have a Prototype game come out on PS Plus the same month as yet another inFAMOUS game does. (Although the first inFAMOUS was technically not PS Plus, but part of the “Welcome Back” package for the months of downtime.)

As to the complainers, boo hoo, you lost 4 days of PSN. Blame the hackers.

  • Wow nice to see a non-Indie for once on Vita! I’m excited for Duke.

Also excited for First Light. I loved SS

  • Nice month. Lets hope the sales are just as good!

  • Also, where is this week’s store update/sales? Are you guys gonna just continue to ignore questions?

  • @89
And are you going to continue to pretend that New Year’s doesn’t exist?

  • @90 Hahahahaha!!! Well played…

  • Extending the flash and holiday sales does nothing. After this network disaster I’m not really in the mood to give you more money Sony. you ruined mine and manny others Christmas Sony. I believe the playstation community deserves compensation for this.

  • First things first. No idea why Ducktales isn’t for Vita.
Completed that one a couple years ago on a NES I bought for the kids, that they ignored for the PS3.

Almost bought The Swapper, but went with Race the Sun instead, so glad to try it out.

Not interested in Prototype 2, or Whoa Dave, or Duke Nukem though a better choice for Vita I suppose.

Hope Vita actually gets some decent sales like EU.

This will be my last year with Plus, more than likely, so better sales would be nice.

  • I rarely leave negative comments, but I feel this latest outage due to the Lizard Squad DDoS deserves to be addressed — at least for PS Plus subscribers. It wouldn’t have been so bad if:
    1) They hadn’t warned you nearly a month ahead of time
    2) Sony’s networks hadn’t been exposed as weak before
    3) It didn’t occur during the BIGGEST opportunity all year to play
    4) PS4 didn’t lock you out of games that have no reason to be online
And yet, the compensation paying customers get is an extended sale? Not really in the mood to give you more money! At least pro-rate our accounts. It only adds up to about 14 cents per day. Is that so much to ask for? Think of the additional loyalty and ROI you’d get.
Nothing can replace the days I lost because I won’t have that time off from work again for another year. But Playstation could make good to the thousands of PS Plusers in the same boat as I am and stop pretending nothing ever happened. Tell us how you’re going to prevent it in the future so we can have faith to remain subscribers. Given how quickly Microsoft was able to respond to the DDoS, I’m starting to wonder if I made the right choice in console.
    Respectfully, a huge Playstation fan,

    @joshuadelung

  • No one “deserves compensation” because some group tried to ruin the day. It’s not like you missed out on anything.

Anyways, I think this line up is rather nice. I’m glad to check out what First Light is like.

  • There wouldn’t be such an outrage if the PSN wasn’t so vulnerable to that type of attack. Not to mention Xbox Live came back up way earlier than the PSN, which was down for like a day and a half after the guys claimed to have stopped the attacks.
As little money as it adds up for 4 days, I do believe Sony owes its costumers something. The way they handled this was pathetic. The @askPlaysStation account was copy pasting the same tweet over and over again for three days straight, before an official announcement was made in here.
It was a total PR disaster and I cannot fathom anyone possible defending Sony from what is clearly a screwup on their part as well.

  • Good month :)

PD: Flash Sale New Year? u_u

  • @StraussAKA Agreed. I still haven’t gotten a reply to my tweets from @AskPlaystation either.

  • Nice month, but where is the PS Store update of this week???

  • Well I bought Swapper last week so…. Hey I know you are with the Flash Sale and Holiday sale, but can we have a normal weekly sale too?
