PlayStation Vue Launches Today in Chicago, NYC, Philadelphia

I am excited to announce that PlayStation Vue has officially launched today in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia on PS4 and PS3. PlayStation Vue is a new service that combines live and on-demand TV, and a cloud based DVR to stream the best TV shows, movies and sports directly to your console without a cable or satellite subscription.

PlayStation Vue

We set out to build this revolutionary product with our community of gamers in mind. This latest addition to PlayStation Network lets you experience TV the way you have always wanted it. Your favorite shows and channels will always be front and center whenever you start PlayStation Vue. When you are looking for something new and exciting to watch, powerful discovery tools will help you filter thousands of shows in just moments, so you can search less and watch more. The cloud based DVR lets you save your favorite shows with no programming conflicts and store recorded episodes for up to 28 days.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue is initially available on PS4 and PS3 in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. We are working hard to deliver PlayStation Vue to more cities soon. We are also bringing PlayStation Vue to iPad in the near future.

  • They need Univision Network and beinSports

  • Sony this is nice and all, but are you ever going to make a blu ray remote for the PS4? The only reason I still have my PS3 is because of the remote to watch Netflix.

  • $50 isn’t going to entice many of us. There are still way better alternatives out there for less.

  • Sony, why did you post this article without even mentioning the prices? I swear, you guys are the biggest idiots when it comes to pertinent information. It took a user to post the info people want. You guys suck.

The service is not even close to worth the price. Your “discovery” system is ****. Just make some freaking ps4 games that are great and that launch properly.

  • Good Start. Like the idea of ditching cable for an all online set up, but I hate that you guys stuck with a tiered network bundle pricing strategy. This is uncharted territory and you have the opportunity to redefine the model, but you are pretty much just trying to be cable on your ps4. Was really hoping for a more consumer friendly strategy. Still very interested to see where this goes.

  • I want to subscribe but with the current offerings and entry price point of $49.99 + Internet service, no HBO, Showtime, ESPN and ABC.
It’s overpriced. You have to reduce the price SONY, especially with Sling TV packages starting at $20.

I am trying it out right now to see how I like it, and to be honest so far I love it, the price for me is a major downer though.
I will wait and monitor how things develop in the future for this great service that unfortunately is overpriced and doesn’t have some of the major networks…yet.

  • what are the audio and video bitrates? are they competitive with Netflix (8mbps @ 1080p video, 384kbps Dolby Digital audio) or VUDU (8mbps @ 1080p video, 1.5mbps DTS-HD audio)? The existing near-forced streaming on the PlayStation Video store looks and sounds noticeably worse on our big screen TV than the downloads of the same shows on our PS3. We have ~40mbps downstream bandwidth from Sonic.net VDSL in San Francisco and have no issue streaming 4k video from other providers — PlayStation Video store just has poor encode quality for streaming (the downloads still look/sound pretty great!).

Until I can download videos locally to my PS4 like I can on my PS3 and Vita, or there is a bump in streaming bitrate/quality that is higher than PS Video store downloads (~6mbps ABR video and 384kbps ABR audio), my purchases will remain quite low. It’s a shame, as I purchased entire seasons of Teen Wolf, Regular Show, and JIm Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge amongst many other shows in the past.

  • Oh my god, I’m so tempted to switch over. There are only 4 channels we care about: Nickelodeon,Univision,NBCsN and TruTV.You have 3 out of those 4 but you dont understand untill you get Univision i wont be switching at all, you see latin women cant live without their novelas so my GF would kill me if we dont have Univision.

  • wow…….3 whole cities……….

  • I don’t understand how it’s only in specific cities if it’s online and not through your cable provider? Anyway, I’m in Philly so whatever!

  • If it was a bit cheaper, I would say it’s worth it, but for that price, it’s tough to make the jump.

  • How do i get the PS Vue on my PS3, PS4, and PS Vita if for that platform then? I was looking for replacement to my overkilling TV ISP who charger crazy price that makes no sense.

  • Sony man y’all tripping with these prices. If y’all charging this much for internet tv y’all tripping sling tv is much less for more channels and y’all wanna charge 50-70 bucks not taking into account of netflix, hulu, vudu, crunchy roll and these other services. nah sony get it together. I want you all to win but these prices will put you all back in the PS3 financial troubles again.
I can only hope that you all don’t charge an arm and a leg for the VR headset cause y’all are getting too comfortable.

  • THE FUTURE IS NOW

  • $50 A MONTH COMPARED TO VERIZON OR OPTONLINE thats actually amazing, THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE but 80% of the channels are brainwashing mindless crap. this si for those who like cable tv.

  • $40 the premium service would be nice.

  • its here in north new jersey too ya know!

  • In sweet voice of Christopher Walken… WOW
“We set out to build this REVOLUTIONARY product ”
I guess your heads will explode when you create partially functional media player app that can play mp3 from the HDD on PS4.

  • iPad? Is that a feminine hygiene product? How about, you know, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet?
I love the idea of this service. Currently using OTA antennae + Netflix + rentals from PSN to cover my tv needs, but I would consider going all in with Vue if there was a $30 tier that included AMC, Comedy Central, etc. $50 is a lot to ask for a bunch of channels I don’t ever intend to watch. Perhaps there will be a PS Plus incentive at some point? Also, you really need to pull some strings to get ESPN on board, otherwise Sling TV is going to eat your lunch.

  • Hm.. Depending on what city you select, different channels become available or not available. Why does where I live change what I can and cannot view? Internet is open, let loose those restrictions.

  • Any idea when this will be coming to the Detroit area? Specifically Ann Arbor?

  • There must be some serious infrastructure hurdles with this service, like setting up cloud servers in each individual city. I hope the nationwide rollout goes forward as planned. No offense to the fine people of Philadelphia, but that seems like an odd choice for a test city in lieu of Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Don’t forget about us up here in the Northwest. It would be a bold move to launch the service in Microsoft’s backyard, i.e. Seattle!

  • Make it nationwide and LOWER THE PRICE! You need to compete with $20 Sling TV, especially once Sling gets History channel and H2 at the end of March.

Better yet, LET US CHOOSE channels a la carte for about $3 each. I only really care about the major networks, PBS, History, CNN, and some science and nature channels.

  • I was on the Beta in NY and the service is nice but as of now its still lacking a few good channels. I figured it was going to be in the 40-60 price range. That’s still kind of high especially with all the options out there right now. I was wondering how the DVR feature works, and looks like its basically all streaming to your console and being stored on the Sony cloud that is very cool. But still where are all the rest of the networks, I assume they will come as it gets more popular but that will also increase sub price. So until they can get price a bit lower many will pass.

  • Wth i just downloaded this for nuthing? you know what sony instead with an that i can download but cant acess y dont you go screw yourselfs

  • You guys dont do nuthing but waste my time this is not a good way to get customers to buy your products

  • I live in Chicago and this pricing is too much, I’m sorry. whats the point of switching from Comcast or WOW to this when the pricing is this insane! you are better off getting a bundle deal with your provider. Why didn’t you just add Sling TV?

  • How is this different from cable?? The thing that sucks about cable are the bundled packages. Let us choose the channels we want a la carte, and then we’ll talk. I’m not interested in paying for a bunch of stuff i don’t want.

  • BUT ITS NOT COMING TO SONY’S OWN XPERIA ANDROID TABLETS?! MAKES PERFECT SENSE TO ME!

  • I just noticed that some of the channels they are lacking are on Sling lol, so most likely when those expire Sony TV will grab.
    AMC, TNT, CN, XD, ect……

  • Way too expensive and offers Way too little. The Fact that Comcast is a much better deal should say it all…

In My Opinion and at 1st glance the Cons-
    1-Lacks content
    2-Way too expensive
3-Have to run your Playstation and hence, running up your Electric bill and putting ware n tear on them
4-Still paying for channels I do NOT want.
5-Netflix or Amazon Prime are all better deals and pair nicely with Vudu+, YouTube, Hulu+ and other resources. Basically I can get ALL of them for under 30.00 a month and THAT’S WHAT YOU GUYS NEED TO BEAT :)
6-I still need an Antenna or Cable-antenna service
7-Have to use the clumsy PS4 controller which sucks for watching Apps like WWE(so easy to hit a button by accident)
8-This is more of a ?- Does it rely on PSN being UP??? If the Answer is yes, that;s a HUGE downside and concern
9-Still annoys me I can’t play a movie bought from PSN on any device I want as well as DL like with UltraViolet and Disney Anywhere etc…
10-PS+ Subs should get a Decent Discount- This is just an opinion, but PS+ now blows really bad and that would help it.

    THE PROS
    -Nice Interface
    -Some nice DVR features
    -Full HD delivery
    -Possible Voice Control???

  • Any idea how they “authenticate” your location? Geolocation based on IP would be stupid (and rule out things like satellite ISPs which frequently Geolocate to entirely different states, and eliminate those of us who tunnel all our traffic through a VPN.)

    Account address? Billing address?

  • Get this on Pstv and it would be perfect. Having one ps4 and a pstv on other TVs would be perfect instead of getting another ps4

  • You know its a shame how you guys r so popular but yet your so woorse off then xbox i really dont understand is it the graphics that draws people towards this system i mean it must b cause otherwise they Wouldn’t b here hardly no content they dont post things about updates as they should or as they said they Would and they **** people over and they r not even honest about it you can bet im leaving the sony camp and heading over to the xbox camp where at least they r trying to improve things and if they try to **** people over hey at least they r honest about it but at least they r owning up to they’re mistakes and they delivering on they’re promises they deliver on they’re updates and they deliver on they’re content sony is doing none of those things

  • You know its a shame how you guys r so popular but yet you r so woorse off then xbox i really dont understand is it the graphics that draw people towards this system i mean it must b cause otherwise they Wouldn’t b here hardly no content they dont post anything about updates as they should or as they said they Would and they screw people over and they are not even honest about it you can bet im leaving the sony camp and heading over to the xbox camp where at least they r trying to improve things and if they screw people over hey at least they r honest about it but at least they r owning up to they’re mistakes and they are delivering on they’re promises they deliver on they’re content on they’re updates and on they’re services sony is doing none of those things

  • Sony theres a lot you should have done.

First, this should have been something like $20 pick X number of stations, $30 pick X number of stations, and so on. As the price goes up you get to get X amount of stations to pick.

Second, why is there no discount for PS+ people. As it stands now we pay $50/year for PS+, and now we pay $50/month for Vue. Should have been some type of discount for those that have PS+.

Third, your missing local stations. All local stations for the area where the person lives should be included (and if you take my idea above, then all local stations shouldnt be standard and not counted against the allotment for your price bracket).

There’s so many ways you could have killed cable providers in their tracks by taking the consumer approach, and yet you took the cable provider approach and just killed a ton of business you would have gotten.

I was so looking forward to Vue, but if i take your price plans (starting at $50/month) i would end up saving money just adding on a tv package to my FIOS internet with Verizon, and come away with more channels than what you offer for your $50 level.

    SMH….. sigh…

  • UGH… cant edit above post so:

Third, your missing local stations. All local stations for the area where the person lives should be included (and if you take my idea above, then all local stations SHOULD be standard and not counted against the allotment for your price bracket).

  • @85

    Well said Sir! Completely agree.

  • Yeah as i said sony is doing none of the things they set out to do thats y people should b mad at them and should express it once again SHOULD be mad no no no have to b mad it shouldnt suprise you that they dont deliver on nuthing cause thats they’re usual routine is nuthing they do nuthing for us us the people us they’re customers who made them the million dollar company they r today the ones got them out of they’re financial situation

  • Hey Eric, any idea when the service might be coming to San Francisco?

  • you get 1 week trial

  • Adding to my list above @85:

Sony you could have gave us even more options on pricing plans by keeping the current model you have now, and also having the pricing model i have listed above. That way the consumers could choose which option works best for them, and Sony could also see which is more popular among the consumers, and make any changes to their pricing models that they see fit, or just leave it the way it is.

More choices is never a bad thing. The key is to get the pricing just right that fits in with the consumers.

  • Give me ABC and Pix11 and I’m sold.

  • WOW i didn’t notice the price before hand but wow. You are over-killing on the price then my TV ISP. We are paying only about i think around $50-60 month i believe so for everything we need.

  • Loving the continued Vita support.

  • I would be interested if it worked with Vita and oh I don’t know PLAYSTATION TV.

  • No PS Vita and PS Vita TV support, no ABC, price to high for elite membership, and for real wow. If you get ABC i’m 100% going to get PS Vue then and trade up for faster ISP for speed to handle PS Vue then.

  • I’m glad to see the Sony is innovating in the space. As a cord cutter, I’d definitely consider using a platform such as this. However, these packages are very very expensive. The high cost defeats the purpose of cord cutting. I’d only consider purchasing at a lower price point. I’d be happy to have fewer channels, if they were the channels I care about, in exchange for a much better price. The service needs to come closer to being a la carte. Also, I hope this service makes it soon to non-PS hardware such as Roku & Tivo.

  • Fox Sports 1 and 2? Hell yeah! I get to see UFC fights, but where’s ESPN? :/

  • Oh, and we need ABC, and it should also be a little cheaper.
