PlayStation Vue Launches Today in Chicago, NYC, Philadelphia

I am excited to announce that PlayStation Vue has officially launched today in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia on PS4 and PS3. PlayStation Vue is a new service that combines live and on-demand TV, and a cloud based DVR to stream the best TV shows, movies and sports directly to your console without a cable or satellite subscription.

PlayStation Vue

We set out to build this revolutionary product with our community of gamers in mind. This latest addition to PlayStation Network lets you experience TV the way you have always wanted it. Your favorite shows and channels will always be front and center whenever you start PlayStation Vue. When you are looking for something new and exciting to watch, powerful discovery tools will help you filter thousands of shows in just moments, so you can search less and watch more. The cloud based DVR lets you save your favorite shows with no programming conflicts and store recorded episodes for up to 28 days.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue is initially available on PS4 and PS3 in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. We are working hard to deliver PlayStation Vue to more cities soon. We are also bringing PlayStation Vue to iPad in the near future.

If you are ready to start Vueing, go to PlayStation Store on your console or visit our website for more details and ongoing updates.

  • how can people be saying $50 is too much? try coming back when your intro price to your cable/sat provider expires and youre paying 180+ a month for 500 channel you dont watch.

  • This is a major fail, in my opinion Sony. You are bundling channels and forcing people to buy channels they don’t want, to get the ones they do want. People don’t want a cable clone. They want new and modern. Choice and flexibility. Something regular cable doesn’t provide. This is a huge step in the wrong direction.

Not that it matters for me anyways. Just another feature not available in Canada.

  • As someone who does not watch television – I cancelled my subscription three years ago and never looked back – this service is irrelevant to me.

But what would really be exciting is to see Sony team up with Digitally Imported (Trance, EDM, etc) and get their app on the PS4. That would be something worth paying for.

Oh, and finally, should we just assume that the PlayStation TV has, and is, a complete and utter failure and that Sony will no longer be acknowledging it’s existence in the future. After all, here is another service – one of many – to which will not be made available on the little device that could but no body thought it should.

  • The prices are ridiculous and there isn’t ESPN. Engadget had a lot of negative things to say about it as well. Why would anyone ditch Cable or Satellite for this? It would be better to just do SlingTV for $25 per month and Netflix for $9 per month.

  • SCEA couldn’t even be bothered to get Netflix on PSTV. They never cared about that.

  • Since there is no ESPN, the local comcast sportsnet channels should be included with the $50 plan. The video quality and user interface is pretty good. Just irked that I have to pay extra for CSN

  • Lol. I’m not getting this. I get a better deal with Verizon given the high speed data and the hundreds of channels. I’m upset that I had to go digging for prices rather than reading it on this post, the email from Sony, or the PS store. I understand you guys got burned with the backlash on PS Now prices, but don’t try to insult my intelligence, please.

  • So I’m watching Playstation Vue why is not showing full screen and the Weird thing is it’s a Sony Tv
Sony needs to update this it’s like I’m watching a converter box

  • Sony would do well to combine their PS Now business with this new service, making it a complete entertainment streaming hub.
I bet there will be a lot of people interested in such a thing.

  • This would have to be expanded onto PlayStation TV for it to take off, because most homes only have one console. The only way to watch TV on other TVs is with PlayStation TV. It would help the sales of both the service and the PlayStation TV hardware, big time.

  • I have been looking forward to this, downloaded the app. Can’t watch and I am only 2 hrs away from chicago. :( I guess I will just have to wait to give you my money sony. Get it to Indiana soon!!!!

  • Bloomington if it has to be a city lol

  • I want that in Canada s Shaw could kiss my soft spot good bye Telus Internet with unlimited add-on and this 140$ per months living happy ebver after saving nwarl 1000 per year… I WANT THIS IN CALGARY! Do you hear me SONY? Make it!

  • Wow trying the free preview, I hope this is going to b the quality on launch on the west coast. Let’s get all your IT stuff up and running on are end of the country. We need are PlayStation vue. The picture is perfect. Makes cable look like old analog antenna days. TV and home entertainment will never be the same. Thank you from the customer ambassador to the PlayStation Network.
PSN I’d: bombbreath Gregory S. Napier PlayStation entertainment complete.:-) Sony make.believe

  • Was going to try the free 7-day trial, but then the PS Store wanted my credit card. NOPE.

  • Sell your cable company stocks cancel your satalite and cable or phone co. Television services are dead. And true home entertainment has just begun. PlayStation’s Vue service is just going to get better.:-)

  • Just read on GaF that its starting at $49.99 with three channel tiers $49.99 to $69.99. Not very enticing at all to cord cutting my cable. Sony better get on the ball and land AMC, CW, ABC, ESPN, MLB Network, NFL Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, Disney and more etc.

Get rid of the tier nonsense. I’m paying $20 more a month for everything Sony and its Vue is offering plus everything they are missing on 4 tvs (minus dvr – no one in my house gives a **** about dvr stuff, so I’m saving money there too by not having dvr-hd boxes)

Something I had my eye on, but… I’ll pass on it for right now. Not a very cord cutting friendly deal (imo) with everything that is missing. Something I may revisit in the future once they gradually add more channels, alll or most of the ones missing, and they offer a one package, no tier nonsense, for $50 a month, they will have something great on their hands with their service.

Convenient for some, not convenient for some. (at least right now)

    ….

Shame, they should also have the option to pay from PSN wallet. (or do they? I might have missed that)

  • Your price points aren’t very competitive with existing cable TV plans, and the way they’re structured is not very appealing to cord-cutters.

I think what would ratchet up more interest would be one more lower price-point, say $25/mo, that let’s you select from a number (10? 20?) of the channels available on the lowest ($49.99) tier.

That kind of a’la carte option would be far more exciting to me, and probably many others who have cut the cord (or are thinking about it).

  • Um… yeah.

Wake me up once ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel and Disney XD is added to PlayStation Vue. If not, Ugh.
(Well they abandoned Disney TV support in the PS Store, so…)

  • Really, they should have matched the monthly price of Sling TV with what they are offering channel wise. Then tier up from there since they have tier packages. They could absolutely blow Sing TV out of the water by doing that.

Sony should offer Sony Movie channel to Vue for free, (Its a Sony service… probably passed it over glancing if its not already offered, but doubt it)

Maybe add Qello to Vue at no additional cost.

Seems Sony gathered the basic average cost from every cable/sat provider and priced Vue off that or something.

  • U guys hurry up I live in Los Angeles County and I want to try this out for free to make my decision. I tried Sling TV now I want to try you guys.

  • Like I said before this is not a bad deal and definitely won’t be if they add ESPN and Disney for no additional cost. I guess none of the people complaining have ever had Comcast or Time Warner Cable after the first year. Also people seem to be comparing the promotional prices to this $50 price tag. If you see a price on a Cable website that is not the final price. You can probably add $10-20 each month to the promotion prices for the first year. Even more for the first month if it’s not free to install. But after the first year you should be adding $30-80 to the price tag because after the first year it is jumping a lot. There are a few downsides to the service though but I don’t think price is one of them. The first one is the lack of PlayStation TV support. Another downside is the fact this is a internet required service. So if you go to cancel your triple plan with your local cable monopoly and just keep the Internet you are going to have one hell of a time doing that. When you finally do get it down to only Internet it will most of the time be overpriced internet which might make this PlayStation Vue service too expensive. But if you can get reasonably priced Internet like Google Fiber this service is priced perfect.

  • God, I hope this comes to Arizona soon. $50 is a good price, and you have almost every channel I’m interested in (ABC being the notable exception).

  • That’s rad especially because I don’t have TV anymore

  • Add PlayStation plus as an incentive and I’m all the way in.

  • so $50-$70 a month – LOL

Do people actually know it is probably cheaper to bundle with your internet access than pay these rates?

Technology is great and new ideas are awesome but when the new idea is something that most tv providers have been doing for years and have it included with your service, it is NOT a new idea.

Maybe I am just jealous cause we cant get real internet in the country setting I live in but there seems no point to pay that amount of money. If you area cord cutter and think this is just “awesome” you need to check what your internet bill would be when adding cable or sat to it ;)

I guess this is easier than making a HDMI cord for the Vita or letting people play PS3 games on a PS4 without charging them even more money to do it.

Sad the type of company Sony has lowered itself to.

  • Got it! Love it.
Great package. Saves me from having to deal with my cable company and an extra cable box, etc. etc.

  • I live in Pennsylvania and it works for me . Cheaper than the 101.00 I pay for direct TV because with Direct TV you pay extra for HD extra for local channels extra for second receiver extra for dvr .once AMC is on the channel lineup I’m set

  • OK, signed up for the 7 day trial. YES, you can place-shift your stream to your ps tv, but it is controlling your ps4. Unfortunately, this means that you need additional ps3 or ps4’s for other tvs in your house to stream different shows at the same time. Also tested by bringing my ps tv to the office and it also works place shifting the ps4 stream. Sony needs to update the ps tv to support 1080p and add vue app to it, and this will take off. The quality compared to apple tv and sling is a step up….considerably. It is by far and away the highest quality stream I can get on any of my systems. Although, I cannot say what the results would be like on a slow connection, I have 100/100 both at home and in the office. I will try at a friends house who is at 30/30 to compare. If they add ABC, ESPN, Disney (apple has that advantage right now and if sony adds it, it will probably be later in the year after apple announces their streaming package) I’m in! If they don’t, but knock down the price to $25, $35, $45…..Sign me up. A little steep now, but impressive.

  • For people who say 50 bucks is way to much for 80 Channels PLEASE tell me who you guys have as cable providers. Lol. Im currently getting bills that are 180 bucks for basic digital cable (no extra channels) and 20mb/s internet (which is 60 bucks).

  • Seriously, how can this not be coming to PSTV or Vita? Do you guys want us to live in your ecosystem or not?

  • I would like to see a discount for PS Plus Subscribers.

  • This will work on an iPad, but I use an android tablet. Will this come to Android tablets like the Nexus 9?

  • I’d sign up in a heartbeat once this comes to Portland,OR. for the people that are *****ing about that cable is cheaper have obviously never paid for cable. Once you get past 6-12 months the price of cable nearly DOUBLES to on average around 100$. Plus there’s the factor of EXTRA FEES and paying for the Crappy cable boxes and DVR service. After such fees the bill can raise to around ~150-200$ depending on how many boxes you have in the house. That said, they should include a basic bundle that’s around 25-30$ and not include some of the less popular channels in the 50$ bundle. Me? I’m all for that 50$ bundle whenever it comes.

  • 50 bucks for availability only on PS3 and PS4? Who thought this up?

  • I wish it would include ABC, and ESPN and Disney…..if it included all that then there will be no stopping me from getting the subscription……keep at it PS!!!!!!!!

  • one last update. Went to a friends house and tested this. Started the app on his ps4, then opened a second instance on his ps3…viewing different content at the same time. Went back home and did the same on my ps4 & ps3. So 4 simultaneous connections work. So if you have 4 people all of which only want 1 tv viewing at their place at a time, you can split the cost 4 ways and that would give you all 1 connection each starting at $12.50/mo……no bad at all.

  • I think the price is a bit too steep. I agree with #50 about a better pricing structure to help make this service more successful. Also, as someone living in Arizona I really hope you can add the Pac12 Network to the sports offerings. I have to be able to watch my UofA Wildcats and I’m not interested in any service without the stations necessary to watch my teams games, including ESPN and Pac12 Network.

  • $50 a month is a steal if you have ESPN and HBO, lacking those it is a hard sell… good to see we are getting closer.

  • Does playstation vue offer any sanish channels or multilingual options? i would be sold if this service offered those options

  • Just use a zip code from one of the supported areas!!!!…it works fine!!!!….Use your brains people!!!

    Working great here NEPa

  • Can somebody who’s using the service please hit R3 while watching Live TV and post the specs for the live TV stream?

I’m so curious how the quality is, if its comparable to Netflix, then I’m in !

  • @142 the zip code thing doesn’t work. It is all based off of your IP geo signiture. If you got it to work I would like to know how.

  • Love the product, hate the Slogan!

Stop Viewing. Start Vueing is weak!

How about someting more memorable, like:

    STOP WATCHING, START VUEING

    ???

  • We need to have this on the PSTV. I’d like to be able to do more with it than just being my “PSOne Classics” box…

  • $50 / month
    Fewer channels than basic cable.
    “Cloud-based DVR”

That last one really kills it. “Cloud-based DVR”. Imagine if your cable company could log into your home DVR and delete programs that licencors tell them to delete because a licence has expired or what ever, because that’s precisely what will happen with your “saved” programs in a cloud-based DVR service. Your “saved” programs will disappear just like shows/movies do on Netflix.

So you’re paying a premium price, lacking many basic cable channels, and your DVR experience is controlled by licencors. Why should people pay for this again?

  • LET ME GUESS: This will never be available to Canada… AS EVERYTHING ELSE… Right?? And please dont say “We’re looking into Canada”…

  • Im only an hour away from chicago. Specifically Kenosha, Wisconsin will the service work for me.

  • I just got the 7 day free trial today, and I like it so far. Has all the shows I want, no one in my house watches sports so the 49.00 a month is fine by me. We pay that much for comcast and we don’t even get HD! yeah , you have to pay 10 bucks more a month for HD on comcast and have a whole new installation and new equipment. Screw that. So this gives me the HD quality I want and the shows I want. All we wanted was cooking shows, news, and children’s show. I will be staying on when 7 days are up.
