God of War III Remastered Coming to PS4 on July 14th

Happy Tenth Birthday, God of War! I can’t believe it has already been ten years (almost to this day) since Santa Monica Studio released Kratos out into the wild.

10 Years with God of War

Creating an original game is really hard; it takes a combination of creativity, tenacity, guts, skill, and let’s be honest here, no small amount of total lunacy to imagine and see to the finish an entirely new world. So making an original game that is successful, well that is just lightning in a bottle, my friends. I believe that David Jaffe did just that when he created and directed the first God of War game.

God of War PlayStation Gear

Official God of War merchandise is now available on the PlayStation Gear Store at gear.playstation.com. The collection includes several t-shirts to choose from and a limited edition Kratos statue! The Kratos on Throne Statue depicts the final scene in the original God of War.

The statue is being produced as a limited edition of 1,250 and stands at an incredible 29 inches tall, showing Kratos sitting upon his throne as the new God of War. Reserve yours with a deposit today!

I joined the Studio later in the development of the first game and had the pleasure of being part of making Kratos who he is today. It all began with Dave’s vision of a brutal mythological world that was equal parts amazing and insane. Then slowly it coalesced with our desire to make the best “pick-up-and-play” action adventure game, seamlessly taking the player to the far reaches of their imagination.

All of this was rolled into the capable hands of one of the most talented development teams I have had the pleasure of working with, the Santa Monica Studio. Together we fought our way to the finish, battling side-by-side (and sometimes even against each other) to reach the finish line and release a game that we all were proud of. As luck would have it, many of you played that game and liked it enough to let us make many incredible entries into the series.

As a fan action adventure and story based games myself, I am forever thankful to Dave Jaffe for the amazing world he created, out of his freaking head. As a professional I owe much of my current career to the opportunity that he and Shannon Studstill (now head of Santa Monica Studio) gave me to go on and direct the second game

The story I wrote for God of War II set the stage for an epic finish to the trilogy Dave and I had always imagined, an all out war between the Gods, Titans, and our favorite angst-ridden Spartan warrior. Going into the third game I set to work on a script and game layout that would push the PS3 to its absolute limit.

While I did not continue on to direct the game, Stig Assmussen, the badass Art Director on the series, took the helm as Director and continued crafting the game and story to its eventual meteoric heights with creative gravitas and skill, and along with his amazing team created one of the craziest, most bombastic and most visually resplendent entries in the series. Seriously, every time I play through that game I see the unique brand of brilliance the Santa Monica team pours into every game they do.

Imagine if a game like that came out on PS4, right?

Well, thanks to the fine folks at SCEA (or Santa Monica Studio) we do not have to imagine anymore because God of War III Remastered is here!

God of War III Remastered

Well, not here yet, but here in the sense that we are announcing it, here. It actually comes out on July 14th.

This action packed thrill ride of a game will take series newcomers and regulars alike on a retina-popping thrill ride filled to the absolute brim with 1080p gameplay, silky smooth combat, earth-shaking weapons, bosses you simply have to face to believe, and an all-new new photo mode so you can share those most tender of God of War moments, like stabbing a Minotaur in the frickin face, with your friends and loved ones.

I highly recommend everyone grab a copy and play because whether you are new to the series or Spartan veterans, God of War III Remastered is one damn fine game.

On this glorious day of celebration we are also taking some of the world’s best speed runners and bringing them together under one roof to watch them break, exploit, and skip all the long hours and hard work the development team put into these games, all in hopes of achieving the fastest completion time! Huzzah!

Seriously, they can finish the game in less time than it took for us to agree on a dinner order, its nuts. You should just watch it.

Should we toast to another ten years? Will there be another ten years?

  • $40 for a higher res version of a 5 year old game?

    Sorry, but that’s not happening.

You really missed an opportunity to have a $20 greatest hits line here sony.

  • I guess people buying The Last of Us remastered sent Sony the wrong message.

  • It’d be cool if it was free on PS Plus. That’s the only way I’d play again. I loved the game but I platinumed it on PS3. i can’t see myself spending $40 on a game where I have seen everything it has to offer already. But if you missed it on PS3, you must play it if only for the first boss fight, one of my favorites in the series

  • I think some are missing the point about this being 3 only without 1 & 2: Yeah, 1 & 2 were redone in HD previously. But you still can’t play them on PS4. PS Now is irrelevant for many people who don’t want to pay yet another monthly fee. People just want these games on their PS4s. So while many are blah about this being released at all, they figure it at least ought to be the complete trilogy so newcomers to the series (and everyone else) can start at the beginning.

  • I love GoW in every way and don’t understand why people hate ascension so much???? the multiplayer is by far the best multiplayer I have played hands down. I wont be buying GoW 3 unless multiplayer is included

  • makes sense for the whole collection to be released if not FU SONY rip off merchants

  • 20$, no more!

  • Really fell like Ascension should be included.

Xbone- Master chief collection gets 3+ games remaster/re-released in one package

PS4- gets 1 game AND i foresee if this sells well then GOW: Ascension will get a remaster also @ $40

Normally its Microsoft screwing their fan-boys not Sony.

    Will buy once under $20

  • Any chance we’ll be able to use the Godly Possessions on playthroughs w/o removing trophy support? Or adding and the ability to and along with a New Game+? I mean a normal run is going to net almost all trophies anyway. Or even using the skins. I wasn’t gaming much when GoW 3 was released up until recently so I only ripped through it once. Past few months I’ve been awaiting back surgery so have way too much gaming time resulting me in going back to play GoW 3 & quite a few other PS3 titles the past month waiting for Bloodborne to drop. Needless to say I was disappointed I couldn’t use the skin (black/red) w/o disabling trophies even though both Kratos damage and enemies damage were the same amount. Doesn’t make me so sad I was so uninterested in gaming that my LE GoW 3 ended up being nothing more than Pandora’s Box and the game because the DLC expired by the time I actually opened the case again sometime before Ascension was released. Even though I’m playing GoW 3 I ordered this first thing once Amazon listed it. Here’s hoping for some minor fan services and tweaks to trivial items such as those mentioned and others perhaps overlooked.

  • Great for people who have never played GowIII and don’t have a PS3. Pointless for people, like me, who have their PS3 still and can buy the collection with the entire series (minus Ascension) for $20…

Seriously, I got super excited to see GoW for PS4 pop up on Playstation.com…until I saw III underneath the logo. I do have to say thank you to Sony for redirecting my attention to the PS3 collection which I planned to buy before. I’ll just buy that instead to get the entire series and play the other 4 games I never got around to (I played and beat Chains of Olympus).

Still very very disappointed about this not being provided as a collection, an the $40 price tag compared to the $20 collection price tag for the PS3 version is even more insult to injury.

Also, can we please get more exclusives on the PS4 that actually give the same amount of spectacle and wonder that many of the first party PS3 games did? it’s kind of disappointing lately to just have remakes and lack decent games in the first party department. I’m hoping Bloodborne delivers.

  • Sony: Don’t listed to all the complaining. God of War 3 Remastered looks awesome and I can’t wait to replay it. I for one like Remastered games, keep them coming. I heard rumors of Beyond Two Souls Remastered, I hope that they are true. Also don’t forget about the Vita, it would be nice to have an original God of War game for the Vita (not just remote play).

  • I need to say this:
GoW was FANTASTIC. Everything was just amazing in the first game.
But then… GoW 2 appeared, and I instantly noticed the change of scriptwriter/director, and man, the story ended being like it was written as a FANFICTION. It was TERRIBLE. At last the game was still good on its own.
Everything after that was just dissapointing.
If God of War stood like an ONLY game, I could still say “Yes, it was a timeless classic”, but all the sequels and prequels just messed the greatness of what you started. I mean, ok, you have to make more of X because X gives money, but… the entire franchise after the first game it’s EMBARRASING. You could have done MUCH BETTER PREQUELS, hell you should have made even, instead of sequels and prequels, spin offs or something.

Gow 3 was good, but it felt short in everything, specially in expectations.
You have a lot of great talent, don’t let it get wasted on unnecessary remakes, sequels and prequels.

  • Santa Monica sorry but you guys just did a big mistake,I’m disappoited.

  • @ 114 GENETICIDE – Very well said.

  • @ 163 Viewtiful_Gene – I’ve never read so much nonsense in a single comment but I do agree that they should stop milking the GoW franchise before they spoil it even further than what they did with Ascension.I seriously hope this new “project” they’re working on…ain’t a new GoW game.

  • Maybe if Sony would make REVERSE COMPATIBLE SYSTEMS then PS4 users would not have to wait for their favorite games to come out again.

  • Will this come with the multiplayer for ascension? I had a lot of fun playing it and I feel the $40 price tag would be more fitting if it did.

  • I recently purchased a PS3 to catch up on the must-play games for it, and I also have the PS4 for the new stuff.

I haven’t played any of the GoW games even though I bought GoW Ascension a while back, I haven’t gotten around to playing it.

With that background, here are my thoughts on the GoW 3 remaster –
I AM EXCITED! I’d love to be able to play the classics from PS3 and the new games all on the PS4. It’s one less console to manage and the games will play better on the new hardware. Remasters are good for 1st time players and for people who want to relive the experience with better graphics and sound. I think that they should fix bugs and shortcomings while they are remastering, but that may not always be possible. The remastering crew may only have limited access to the game code, so they may not be able to fix anything at all.

I understand the complaints, it would be nice to get the entire series as a collection for the PS4 , but I’ll take what I can get!

The Uncharted series remastered would be nice, though I’ve played 2 & 3 and I just got 1 a week ago to play when I get time.

  • # Santa Monica can you tell me if this game will remain D like the original or is that feature being taken out. Or If anyone knows please comment
