First Look at Mad Max Gameplay

Hi PlayStation fans! Well, here at Avalanche Studios, we’ve had our heads down, busy putting the final touches to Mad Max. We’ve been focused on pushing what we can do on PS4. Now we’re confident we’ll be able to show you an experience that you have not played before.

We are very proud of Mad Max, so we thought the best way to showcase it would be to put together a video. Since the game is massive, both in terms of geography and variety of content, we didn’t think one continuous sequence would do it justice. So, we have cut together a bunch of in-game footage (with a little in-game rendered cinematic sequences to set the scene) to give you as broad a sense of the game as possible. We hope you’ll enjoy the first real look at Mad Max gameplay in our walkthrough video.

First Look at Mad Max Gameplay

There has been a lot going on recently as we launch into the final phase of development. A massive moment for the team was the recent release of detailed information about the game. It was great to be able to share as much as we did in recent articles.

It was equally rewarding to read your responses and hear the support for Mad Max and Avalanche Studios. We’re lucky to have such a passionate fanbase.

So, what’s happening with the development of the game right now? Well, we are continuing to push the fidelity of The Wasteland and squeeze as much content and immersion out of the PS4 hardware as possible. True to the Avalanche Studios promise, we are cramming in content, both above and below ground level, to ensure that there are surprises around many corners. Apart from very desolate and barren landscapes, the prevalence of indoor locations is something quite new. You may have to look hard for many of them, but they’re worth it if you persevere!

It’s important that The Wasteland is a living, breathing entity — it’s one of the game’s most important characters. We are really pushing the weather systems, day and night cycle, skies and environmental effects so that the world feels as dynamic as possible. It’s not only the inhabitants of this world that are intimidating!

We’ve also been looking at how we allow PlayStation users to share their experience with friends. At heart, it’s a single-player experience, but since you can customize so much (your Magnum Opus, Max’s appearance, your journey, your investment in strongholds) we felt it was important to be able to show off! More about that stuff later.

We’re looking forward to bringing you more news from the trenches and we’re working on more video and trailer material that shows off this unique and disturbing universe. We hope you like what you’ve seen so far!

    Whoa! This looks awesome!.
Some kind of Action-Racing-RPG game. Crossing my fingers that the game plays and feels like this great trailer.

  • Wow. This is looking absolutely amazing. Should’ve expected as much given that this is an Avalanche game. Day 1!

  • PanTheMan16

This does look really good. Not sure why, but I’ve been super hyped for this game, even though the movie is by far one of the worst things I have ever seen. I would like to see some improved animation though. Scooping a handful of food from a can should not have the same animation as feasting on a body. Max’s face is a little too dead as well. It needs to be more human so people can connect and care about him more. Overall, though, this game does look awesome and I am really looking forward to it. Just, please, put in the extra effort to polish it and show us why buying a PS4 was worth it. :)

  • I had almost forgotten about Mad Max. It looks and sounds incredible. Well done! It’s nice to see a release date as well!

  • Corn-Pillow

I think this will blow people away like shadow of mordor did. I wasn’t expecting to pick this up but now i definitely am.

  • It actually looks better than I imagined. I’m kind of hype

  • Thanks for the actual gameplay. Started to feel hyped but just remembered Watch Dogs. Never again. Still will keep an eye on it.

  • JonathanJedi

Damm! Was not expecting that! Looks like a cross over with Vigilante 8 + Fallout mixed with Shadow of Modor combat style. Day one purchase definitely!

  • KazeEternal

TWO MAN ENTER!!! ONE MAN LEAVE!!!

  • yowzagabowza

It looks pretty damn good so far! I think I know what I’ll be playing in September now!

  • OnTheBus666

Sweet love that the combat looks more like batman AA than a cover based shooter, which is what I thought we were getting.

  • TheFlyingPuffin

    Looks promising for sure.

  • SONIC-Deadlocked

This game looks crazy good. It’s also good to actually see gameplay, and have some details about the game. I won’t get too hyped yet, thinking about all the disasters of last year, but I’ll be paying real close attention to this.

  • The hype is real folks

  • Does the combat look like the Batman series? It seemed so (and I liked it!).

  • hitsus-sama

His similarities to Joel makes this game look like a story of what happened between prologue of the Last of Us and the actual game :P

  • CrusaderForever

Amazing, they really nailed the subject matter! D1P easy!

  • combat looks like batman+ac

  • September 1st? Really? The same day MGSV:TPP comes out. Prepare to move your release day a few weeks or be prepared to take a huge hit in both sales and media coverage.

  • Looks like a young Nathan Drake !

  • PanTheMan16

People comparing this to Batman and Shadow of Mordor is a HUGE insult. I hope Mad Max is nothing like either of those games. I think it looks very unique, with the only similarities being to maybe Rage and Twisted Metal. You know.. games that are actually good. But still, I doubt it will feel like either of those games. Here’s to finally being able to experience some creativity this generation.

  • Looks impressive I will keep this on my radar.

  • SeanStrange

One of my most anticipated games this year is shaping up to be amazing!

  • Fantastic

  • bbswarrior_11

This looks fricking rad! Definately getting this and MGS PP on september 1st. This is right up my alley.

  • I don’t want to hear any more news on this game or watch anymore trailers because I don’t want to ruin the game because this looks awesome as ****

  • Photo Mode would help out a lot when it comes to sharing…I’m very interested in this game after finally getting to see some gameplay. I read the game informer article but I still needed to see it being played(at least some). I can’t wait to see more gameplay. Hopefully E3.

Guys if you had been living under a rock for 15 years you should know that 3D beat em up games are awful. The Warriors is the only popular title and yet it’s a movie title!!

  • @27 – 1) Having melee combat does not classify a game as a “beat em up”. 2) Most people here won’t have heard of The Warriors, so no, it’s not “the only popular title”, or even a popular title at all, nowadays. For my money, the best melee combat we’ve seen in recent years was in Sleeping Dogs.

  • BrianMcGuinness

    Holy cow this looks awesome.

    ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

It’s like Nathan Drake in kicking ass in RAGE game!

  • Jake_Indiman

The layout and structure reminds me of Sleeping Dogs. I loved that game. You sold me! :)

  • I’m going to go out on a limb and say fun driving, tedious on foot fighting

  • I am the Nightrider. I’m a fuel injected suicide machine. I am the rocker, I am the roller, I am the out-of-controller!

  • Im soo buying MAD MAX

  • Looks amazing! Can’t wait to see more gameplay–hopefully it has a fairly lengthy story too. Reminds me of a cross between Fallout and Rage with a little Far Cry and other game mechanics mixed in as well.

  • hubba hubba

  • Wow, that trailer. Nostalgia factor+actually looking good….but appearances can be deceptive. Don’t let me down, Ava.

  • But is it 60 FPS???

  • This does look awesome. Where is the pre-order for the digital version on PSN?

  • Deuces_Apples

Can’t wait to play this! I’m really impressed. I think this game would be successful even without the Mad Max name. Me being a fan of the Mad Max movies is a definite plus.

  • @29 Yikes, somebody’s taste is absolutely atrocious.

  • Looks pretty sweet! Looking forward to it.

    @42 Nope, just different.

  • PanTheMan16

@42 – Yours, evidently. But that’s alright. Have fun with Destiny and Hardline while the rest of us enjoy Mad Max. :)

  • PhenixNguyen-

Looking forward to this game. The environment kinda remind me of the game RAGE.

  • Wow this looks amazing can’t wait to get a hold of it when it comes out..

  • Hoou I wasn’t expecting much from this game when I saw the announcement trailer at E3 but damn!!…this looks too good to be true, the gameplay looks top notch and I see a huge potential in this game.Well I’m looking forward to some more gameplay videos, some side-missions showcase but this bad boy is already on ma list.I really really hope this game is good as it looks…great job Avalanche.
And if this is a SP only game…well then you have my support already. Also:

“we have cut together a bunch of in-game footage (with a little in-game rendered cinematic sequences to set the scene)”

    Thanks for being honest.

  • Looks great. Even better that you have made it single player. I do hope we get to drive the real last of the V8’s as well.
    Happy motoring.

  • @44 “I know you are, but what am I?” About the sort of retort I’d expect from a person of your caliber. Have fun snobbing your nose at anything popular.

  • PanTheMan16

@49 – When you logged in, solely to insult someone’s interests because they differ from your own, you lost any imagined right you had to play the superiority card. It’s your own fault you’ve been embarrassed. Pick your battles.
