PS Plus: Free Games for May 2015

Another collection of excellent games joins PlayStation Plus this May, and you’ve come to the right place for details!

Let’s begin with a fan-favorite game with a crazy colorful art style: Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition on PS4. Is that title a mouthful? Sure! A mouthful of delicious hand-to-hand combat! Bask in Guacamelee’s mix of platforming, puzzle solving, and exquisite video game humor.

Also up for grabs on PS4: Ether One. This new, first-person puzzle game tasks you with restoring the broken minds of the mentally ill through surreal puzzles. Can you unravel their tangled lives and also find answers to your own desperate questions?

Other games this month include the critically acclaimed indie project The Unfinished Swan, solar speed-demon Race the Sun, and the calmly explorative Hohokum, all of which are available on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. As well as the oddly charming Murasaki Baby, available on PS Vita.

These games will be free for Plus members starting on May 5th. Would you like to know more? Hit the video below, and hear me rant about video games for a few minutes!

“Another excellent collection of games PlayStation Plus Joins this May ”
I do not think my dear friend ..

  • bellyflopmonkey

Meh. Is it just me, or is PS plus free games really getting lame. Last year was jam packed full of big title games and this year is 90% indie titles. Don’t get me wrong I love a good indie but I would definitely like to see some more bigger titles. Could be because they’re trying to ease everyone into next gen (I still only have ps3) and make it seem like ps3 is played out. Smart tactic, I suppose. But if we’re paying to be VIP I’d like to see some bigger games! Love ya PS.

  • I guess it’s quantity over quality for Vita this month, huh? Race the Sun sucks, Hohokum is going to be played for 15 minutes once and I’ll go “neat”, then the same for Unfinished Swan. Murasaki Baby looks fun but stupid. We’ll never get anything like Disgaea 4, Senran Kagura, or Atelier, will we?

How about for once Vita has a good month like when it was first supported?

  • Alright. What the hell is with all the god dang side scroller games why cant we get something good for once like idk. God of war or anything else thats not a side scroller like for real.

  • Very nice collection this month, good job sony!! Would be nice to see some aaa by now though.. Honestly Ive been more interested in xbox live offerings for several months. Honest feedback since you wanted to hear it, still love my ps4 tho.

  • Interesting reading all the negative reviews and rants. Obviously there is a whole range of likes and dislikes. I personally am very happy with the line-up.

  • When is Driveclub coming out for Playstation Plus free?

  • Such crappy games this month. Usually there’s at least one mainstream game, but nothing but cheap indie crap this time. Unless June and July have something truly exceptional, this will be my last quarter having a membership. Way to ruin a great loyalty program, Sony. The free Plus games were the only reason I’ve chosen Sony over Microsoft for the last two console generations.

  • Dont want to sound antiindie cause not but this months line up is bad. As a Vita owner Im happy cause I got 4 games that are appropriate to be played on Vita. As a PS3 owner Im mad cause all I got was little indie games that already be playing on Vita. Crossovers nice but it shouldn’t mean no console exclusives. There are a # of good games still havent been released for PS3 that really should like Beyond 2 Souls. Old but not ancient, exclusive to PS3, & actually carried prestige. No offense to Race the Sun but I now own 4 copies. PS needs to diversify. PS4 this month is laughable. Guacamelee is old and I’m pretty sure it’s already been released on PS3 for free b4. Thats a step backwards. And every month its just indies that could run on the PS3 or the Vita. That’s not the kind of content people were hoping for when they signed up for PS+. Obviously now its a grift because PS4 owners have to have it for MP so they can give out whatever crap they want and we’ll all still have to keep our membership but try to have a bit more respect for consumers. The PS4 isn’t super old but its time to make with the bigger budget games already. Knack or something. Don’t turn into XBL.

  • Sorry for my horrible grammar in my last comment. I had to shorten it to make the character count.

Also bring back the bigger games collection. Back when you had several months of games available at a time instead of just 1 month was a lot better. Not sure why that even ended.

  • To anyone acting as if we, as consumers, have no right to complain, I guess you don’t know how commerce works. It makes no difference what used to be offered on Plus when it first came out, what they offered two years ago or what is offered today. We, who pay the subscription fee, have every right to voice our opinions to a company who has already taken our money under the premise that in their own advertising, claimed to offer “at least one AAA title per month” as part of the service. When this promise isn’t kept, that company can expect to hear me complain. As they do not offer refunds (even when they don’t offer what they advertise), this is the only recourse many of us have. The fact that this blog has a section to leave comments clearly shows they want feedback, and whether some users like it or not, not all feedback is going to be sunshine and rainbows.

  • There’s no denying that ever since online play on PS4 has made PSPlus a requirement, the quality of the IGC offering has declined. Sony revamped the IGC with advertising that promised a AAA title EVERY month, and I based my decision to pay for three years of plus at once back in 2012, expecting them to maintain their standards. As soon as the PS4 launched, I started to realize the mistake I’d made. As I’ve said before, I don’t care for online multiplayer. I never got into that, so the ONLY incentive for me to keep the subscription alive is for the IGC offering. I’ve had a PS4 since launch, and I’ve yet to utilize any online multiplayer on it.

  • For those who feel the need to get personal because other consumers opinions are different from yours, you really need to reevaluate your life, possibly get out more or look into some anger management assistance. Nobody here is crying, whining, etc…. They are voicing their opinions, just as I am, and this doesn’t justify jumping in front of a bullet for a corporation that doesn’t care about you. Let people have their say, as you’ve had yours. Perhaps grow up a little and take everyone’s comments for what they are: consumers voicing their opinions about a service they’ve paid for and aren’t happy with what they’re getting for their money. Just because some of you are happy, doesn’t mean we all have to follow suit. Having a place to voice my displeasure is as much my right as it is for others to voice their satisfaction.

  • What a load of crap, I remember when PS used to come out with awesome games for PS plus, now its mandatory for ps4. U guys really have cut the budget on ur great games. I mean half of this is sidescrolin crap and the others are either never heard of washouts or gamestops $5 bin. Sad u sold of Sony. Welcome to playstation360

  • This is an amazing lineup. Keep up the great work.

  • Played all 4 Vita offerings. Not one good game in the bunch. Hohokm is unbearable pretentious pap. The rest are just mediocre.

  • I understand that the games are free, however, there are rarely anything other than indie trash on here, some of which has been available for several months.

Can’t we get TLOU by now? or I:SS? these are the types we really are hoping for, and we used to get this level of service for the PS3 from time to time, but on PS4 there has been little reason to look for anything worthwhile.

I really look forward to you guys stepping up your game a little; as you can see, some of us are tired of the junk……

    Thanks for listening.

I don’t entirely understand why people are complaining
*1 month you’re paying 10 dollars for the service, okay.
*3 months you’re paying 18 dollars, or 6 dollars a month for the service.
*12 months you’re paying 50 dollars, or 4.17 cents a month for the service.

    Your subscription pays for:
    *Online Multiplayer
*Free games, themes, avatar pictures, and the like
*Games, themes, avatar pictures, and whatnot at discounted prices

And other features I can’t think of.

So we’re talking roughly, what? 1, maybe 2 dollars that you’re actually putting towards those free games each month, and you’re complaining that they’re not triple A titles? You realize considering PS+ is required now, they could just do away without the free games entirely.

I’m not the biggest fan of some indies, but I’m less of a fan of people who feel entitled just because they pay a small fee each month that they feel they should get $30-$50 games each month because Sony has gracefully given them in the past.

  • I know we should be appreciative of the free games we’re given, every so often 1 will be fun for a day or two, but seriously month after month with the indie games is starting to get really annoying. Every since the ps4 came out we haven’t received a AAA game yet.. I’m sure they think it’ll be made up by releasing 4 games for the ps4 but its surely not. i really hope next month something better comes along.. only can hope..

  • Late post, but all of this were awesome, thanks for the video Ryan!

  • NicholasSommerby

@519 This has been one of the only months I can think of recently where it’s been all indie titles, and even then Ether is what…$20 normally? Unfinished Swan is normally…what, $15 before the discount it’s getting? Same price goes for Guacamelee. Last month they gave us Dishonered and Killzone Mercenary, March gave us Oddworld, Sherlock, and Papo and Yo which the only “indie” out of those three alone were Oddworld, which is arguably not even an “indie” game, February gave us both Yakuza 4 and Thief, and finally…January gave us Duke Nukem, Duck Tales Remastered, Prototype 2, and Infamous First Light.

This is literally the first month of the new year where it’s been all indies. I think Playstation can take a break from giving well known titles for once. If people aren’t satisfied with the big titles they get, that’s on them, but the complaining about not getting them is ridiculous. Has PS4 gotten the short end of the stick? Sure, but Playstation 4 isn’t old enough to warrant getting many well known titles, as many of those titles still cost a pretty penny to get. Will they start dishing them out more once the library gets bigger? Most likely.

  • why couldnt eu/us get Trials Fusion? Its 9,99 in the store, can someone explain it to me please. eu/us are thirsty for AAA games and japan ps plus gets it. killzone, Knack, Trials Fusion, Child of Light. What next? Wolfenstein, Rayman, Sherlock Holmes PS4? and we only get indiegames? doesnt seem fair?

  • SONY LISTEN
In June 2015 they should give out 1 AAA Game for PS4 like Rayman, Wolfenstein, Trials, Sherlock and June 16/18 at E3 Experience they should give out KNACK or Little Big Planet 3 for free for everyone. That would be a smart move to thank their customers.

    This!

  • another month more crappy indie games. the equivalent of 1980’s Atari cartridges. no thanks

  • JerseyDevil1313

More Shovelware….. Gee thanks so much for charging me to play online Sony. 2 more months till my sub runs out… I will never resub to Playstation plus again and you guys pretty much made the decision for me to go all in on PC. As soon as I can find someone dumb enough to buy my PS4 I’m out.

for the 1st time since 1982/83 Consoles completely SUCK. Way to go Sony/MS/Nintendo

  • “Another collection of excellent games joins PlayStation Plus this May”….are you serious? So far the games for Vita are horrible! I’m afraid to try the ones for PS3 and PS4. I don’t think they can be any worse!

  • no one wants to play mario or pac man on a world’s best consol or pc. Everyone wants to play games suits their hardware or consol’s capability. Its very funny to see 8bit games on ps4.

  • Unifinished Swan was such an amazing game!
    Now onto Ether One.
Most of the indie games coming out in PS Plus lately are pretty amazing. I’m glad Sony keep reinforcing that.

  • The argument that these are “free games” is ridiculous. If they were free, we wouldn’t be paying for a subscription, we’d just automatically get them for having the console(s). Statements such as, “it gets you online multiplayer” don’t stand on their own when the previous generation console didn’t require this (and not everybody cares for online gaming, I know I don’t). The fact is, Sony doesn’t “give” games every month, they give access to use games for as long as the subscription is kept. Stop paying, and you lose access to all of them. The argument could be made that if Netflix started offering less mainstream TV, and focused more on an independent platform (youtube for example), I’m sure most people wouldn’t question anyone complaining about it. In fact, they’d probably join the mob. Yet Netflix is a subscription service, exactly as PSPlus is. The only difference in the marketing model is the form of media being offered. Instead of TV shows, it’s games. I wonder what would happen if Netflix dropped all “AAA equivalent” material. Would people just put up with it and say, well, they don’t give us all the major shows anymore, but it’s cheap, so you have no right to complain?

  • There is a huge back catalog of AAA titles, going back to the launch of the PS3, that still haven’t found their way into the instant game collection, yet these brand new indie titles are being offered as part of it on day one. And it’s no surprise this really started happening as soon as Plus was required for online play on the PS4. Sony’s banking on this fact so that they can offer a lower quality lineup and people will still pay, just for the sake of being able to game online. So Sony can offer indie games (which I’m sure have much lower licensing fees to the devs than your typical big title dev (ie: Ubisoft, EA, Capcom, Square, etc…). This means a bigger cut of the profits for themselves by putting online gamers behind the eight ball and making Plus mandatory for online play. I suspect next month will have some good titles (it gives them something to brag about at E3), but then July will pick up right where this month left off, as if it hadn’t missed a beat.

  • ULTIMAELITE1900

Still waiting on something worth playing and not something that feels like a damn chore,

  • No AAA game for PS3 ??? :o
I’m so dissapointed… Guess I will be playing the Witcher 3 soon and say Bye-Bye to PS+… :/

  • Many people saying we subscribe for PS+ because of multiplayer. In ps3 multiplayer was free on ps4 it requires fee. why? because service is good. now wait there, “I DO NOT THINK SO…” playing COD AW and idk wht they are doing but its lagging. i thought this shouldnt be a problem?
Pay attention i didnt mention “free games” yet.

@518 NicholasSommerby: I havent seen any decent free theme given by ps plus in ps4. and there is no such thing as avatar in ps4. free games is actually “free games”. and finally why do we need discounts and “free games” if we are not interested in them and not planning to play.

By the way I am not fat guy that lives in his mothers house for her money. I dont want to waste my free time playing bunch of crap

  • Guacamelee is a great game, I really enjoyed it when it was the XBOX Live free game of the month last year.

The rest of this lineup is awful, just garbage indie game followed by garbage indie game. Amazing how when you didn’t have to have PS+ for multiplayer how good the game lineups were, compared to now. It’s almost like Sony stopped trying because they don’t have to try anymore.

  • Driveclub Plus Edition.

    HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA.

  • PrimeroIncognito

Generalplot on May 6th, 2015 at 12:31 pm said: “The argument that these are “free games” is ridiculous.”

The implication that they are expensive is actually what’s ridiculous. If $50/month is breaking the bank, you should quit gaming entirely.

Technically, they are “INCLUDED” in the subscription, since there are other aspects to Plus.

If you’re using any of the other features more, the games could be seen as a “bonus”.

If you’re relying on Plus to provide the majority of the games you want to play, you’ve made an absolutely horrible decision. There’s probably less than 1% chance that it’ll work out the way you really want it to, and you’d have no one to blame but yourself for taking such a silly gamble.

Sony didn’t design Plus to prevent customers from spending money on their other products. Sony and all their affiliates would go broke if the service worked the way you guys are demanding. Duh.

So, buy what you want, and look at Plus as what it’s supposed to be: AN ADDITION (+) to your usual gaming experience. It’s NOT supposed to be EVERYTHING you need.

  • What can we do about it? Thats the important question.
to be honest ps plus for ps4 istn worth it

  • PrimeroIncognito

Akmaljon on May 6th, 2015 at 8:35 pm said: “why do we need discounts and “free games” if we are not interested in them and not planning to play.”

How are they supposed to know what you want to play?

How do you NOT know that everyone has differing tastes?

How do you NOT know that they can’t cater to only one type of gamer, when their customers’ interests are so diverse?

How do you miss the numerous posts that express satisfaction with every single monthly update?

Plenty of people like the games they get. More do than don’t, actually. You people who come here to complain are a far smaller slice of the consumer pie than you realize. Most people are either satisfied or neutral.

I’m pretty sure the numbers on Sony’s end tell them the real story. When you come here and say “WE” don’t like this, as if you’re speaking for everyone, you make a fool of yourself. And the folks at Sony KNOW you’re just trying to manipulate them to serve your specific taste. You’re not fooling them, I promise. Try something else. Understanding and gratitude, maybe. That might help.

  • the games only have value if they are something you would have considered getting anyways.
also, lets not forget that the majority of the indie spam is old pc games that were routinely available for 99cents each long before coming to ps4.

WE WANT KNACK, KILLZONE, WOLFENSTEIN, RAYMAN, TRIALS, TOMB RAIDER, GROUND ZEROES, SHERLOCK, BLACK FLAG, BF4

  • PrimeroIncognito

RayDonovan_- on May 7th, 2015 at 1:09 am said: “the games only have value if they are something you would have considered getting anyways.”

Then let your subscription lapse. If you need your subscription for online play, then the games are a bonus. If you don’t like them, ignore them and go back to the games you play online.

“WE WANT KNACK, KILLZONE, WOLFENSTEIN, RAYMAN, TRIALS, TOMB RAIDER, GROUND ZEROES, SHERLOCK, BLACK FLAG, BF4”

Then buy them. They’re available at your local game store, department store, online store, etc. Simple.

  • Then explain for what am i paying ps plus?

i already had them, but i want to replay them on ps plus or play multiplayergames with my friends. instead of 10000 indiegames, just give us something decent.
most aaa games are very old and they cant even give them out? they are cheaper then most buggy indiegames.
those games are very old. look at ground zeroes its 4 dollar in every store and you want to say that they cant give it away or they cant even ask the publishers to give it away? so why could the xbox one get rayman legends or child of light?

murdered soul suspect is dead, the publisher is broke and they dont even exist anymore. you want me to say that anyone is still buying THIEF or Knack? Even Tomb Raider DE is dead, nobody buys it.

what else the games the last two month for ps4 are old and not even funny to play. april was terrible and may is ok because of guacamelee, but we already had it.

Tower of Guns? Really? its a buggy glitchy and bad game with frameratedrops.

arus awakening the same, nobody is playing it.

never alone is ok, but had bad controls, i finished it.

  • They should be fair and should find a good balance between indie and aaa games
Every three months a bigger game like rayman legends, tomb raider , sherlock, wolfenstein
And for the rest they could bring indie games.

    not possible?

but i need to rebuy games if i want to play diablo III with my friends who dont want to buy them.
PS Plus Subscribers Quadruple Since PS4 Launch. Where is the big thank you of sony? only indiegames really?

  • Hate Indie games, Pay my Ass off for a Ps4 and this is what we get! Even Ps3 are getting better games then the PS4. So not happy

  • I so Agree with RayDonovan !!!!

  • PrimeroIncognito on May 7th, 2015 at 12:18 am said:

The same old stuff that’s already been said a hundred times and still misses the point.

Again, I point out that I signed up when to Plus back when the advertising specifically stated that there is ALWAYS at least one AAA title offered each month. Go back and check promo videos for Plus around 2012-2013 range if you need to see it. I based my decision on THIS SPECIFIC STATEMENT to buy three years of Plus upfront. That’s not gambling, that’s taking advertising at it’s word. And again I point out that I don’t care for online play. Free themes and avatars? Who cares for that stuff? Cloud storage for game saves? Not needed either. My only incentive to keep the subscription alive is for the IGC offering. Period.

  • I buy plenty of games (I have the entire top shelf of a closet cluttered with them, not to mention how many digital copies of games I’ve bought), but that doesn’t excuse the fact that Sony is not keeping their end of the bargain. When their policy changed and they decided that not every month would include a big publisher title, they didn’t bother telling anyone. They just pushed it out there and let the complaints fall on deaf ears. They got a bonus though, plenty of corporation defending shills to take the heat for them and come on these blogs to defend their honor for them.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ Ray

Why are you paying for Plus? You tell me. I don’t know. Seems like you just want Sony to grant your personal wishlist for cheap, but, if you’re in it for something else, you should know what it is.

You imply that all indies are bad and all AAA games are good. This is nonsense and everyone knows it. You might get further with your push if you were being honest. Gross exaggerations being passed as truth tend to turn people off. Especially busy people who have better things to do.

How many “thanks” do they have to give before you’re satisfied? It’s nice when they do, but it’s not required. You want something they make, they put a price on it, you pay for it. Done deal.

How about YOU THANK THEM for what they do by purchasing the games you keep trying to get for free? You want Knack and Thief and you say they’re cheap… well, then? Why not just buy them? And, for the record, Sony has shown their appreciation for us numerous times over the years. How quickly you guys forget all the nice things they’ve done every time a “weak month” rolls around. Well, not every month can be a “winner”. Fluctuations in business are natural and should be expected.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ Boysetfire

The IGC is not ALL THERE IS to the PS4. It’s obvious you’re one of those guys who’s trying to get a bunch of top-tier games on the cheap. Well, good luck with that. It’s not going to happen. It’s not financially feasible. Get with reality. You should peruse the shelves of your local game store if you need something else to put in your console.

    @ Generalplot

Oh, I’m pretty sure they announced every change made to the IGC. In fact, I think it was Morgan who said that they weren’t even going to call it “IGC” anymore after re-arranging the structure for the Plus bonuses because it’s no longer the same thing. It’s us gamers who keep calling it the IGC. Maybe you missed that.

Now, if you buy all your games (and I’m glad you do), then I don’t see what your beef is, really. A guy like you should see Plus as a supplement to the main course you provide for yourself. But, if you find that you no longer like the “included” games, and you don’t use any other Plus feature, why subscribe at all? Seems like you don’t need it. Let it lapse. It’ll be one less thing to nag at you.

No corporate shill here. Just a guy who’s tired of man-babies embarrassing his species.

  • @Prime: “how do I not know?” That’s what I am doing few months already. I am telling them what I want. I apologize using “we” in anger, where I meant “I” or just “ps4 users”. All I am seeing is ps4 users complaining including me because I am jelouse. I wouldn’t say anything if they respected every console users equally. They give out really nice games for PS3 but they don’t give a poop to ps4 users. I don’t own all consoles like many do. If they can’t satisfy each console users individually than they have to make ps+ subscription categories and make separate subscription for ps4 and PS3 and vita. But no they chose to do all console for $50 so they have to satisfy me, a ps4 user. “How do I miss comments of satisfaction?” But “how do they miss comments of dissatisfaction?”

  • After getting to play this month’s selections, I’m very disappointed in all but Guacamelee. I just don’t find the other games to be any fun.

When you have to downplay the most heavily advertised feature of Plus, while ignoring all previous mainstream marketing, just to prove a point, you might be a corporate shill.
