Ratchet & Clank on PS4: Where Past and Future Meet

Hey everyone. We know Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac Games, and PlayStation fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of Ratchet & Clank for PS4. We’re excited to bring you that first look today — ahead of its playable debut on the showfloor of E3 next week.

In this trailer, you’ll see a few glimpses of footage from the film, and then your first-ever look at gameplay footage directly from the game coming exclusively to PS4 in Spring 2016. Check it out.

We knew early on that we didn’t want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2. We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank on PS4 as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story (as seen in the film). We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 games while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.

We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more… all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4. Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning.

The fresh start means we changed up the arsenal quite a bit as well. As always with Ratchet & Clank games, you battle your enemies with an out-of-this-world arsenal. In the PS4 version of Ratchet & Clank, the majority of the arsenal is made up of weapons that weren’t in the original game. That means both new weapons and fan-favorite tools of destruction from the Ratchet & Clank Future series will fill out Ratchet’s kit. From the brand new Pixelizer (which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels) to franchise favorites like the dance-party-inducing Groovitron and wise-cracking robotic bodyguard Mr. Zurkon, Ratchet & Clank’s arsenal has never been better.

Ratchet & Clank

When we were asked recently to come up for a special bonus for fans that support Ratchet & Clank on PS4 by pre-ordering it, we went back to the list of our favorite weapons that we hadn’t yet brought to the game. In the end, it was a no-brainer, and I’m ecstatic to say that when you pre-order the game, you’ll get access to one of my all-time favorite weapons from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando… The Bouncer. The Bouncer launches a bomb that releases a plethora of tiny homing bombs that bounce towards targets. One of the most effective and spectacular Ratchet & Clank weapons ever.

We couldn’t be more excited to debut Ratchet & Clank on PS4 and the silver screen next Spring. Help Ratchet and Clank save the galaxy for the first time, again!

  • The fact that Mr. Zurkon and the Groovitron are considered “Fan favorites” pisses me off. The guns, ships, armor and especially Ratchet’s look took a damn nosedive after the third game and I would have loved to have the old version of Metropolis to have been remade instead but you can bet your ass i’m pre-ordering for the Bouncer! I’m honestly looking forward for this one since it has SO MUCH DAMN POTENTIAL to be awesome!

p.s. Thanks a bunch for bringing back planets I loved as a kid, i’m hoping we get a sick soundtrack to go with it (Gemlik Station remix anyone?)

  • PLEASE tell me this has 3D Stereoscopic support! After Full Frontal Assault and All4One, you CANNOT go back to a 3D Ratchet game, you did 3D justice on old PS3 hardware, so now we’re on PS4 hardware which is far more capable of doing 3D so it would be an incredible waste to squander it.

  • Welcome home Insomniac.

  • It’s looking so good!!!!

  • The graphics of this ratchet are very good,it looks truly like PS4.

  • This looks great! I’ve been a long time Ratchet and Clank fan since day 1, and I can’t wait to see how this compares to the original game. I was curious though? Will you guys be bringing back Gold Bolts, and will they be in the same places they were in the first game? Or will it be a new challenge? ;)

Also, you mentioned adding new planets as well? Does that mean some planets from the original game will be exchanged out? I can’t wait to hear some of the really iconic and familiar music from the first game! Thank you guys so much for your hard work and dedication!

  • LMAO at people talking about Pixar as if they were dat good at movies…all I see in the comments is “it looks like a Pixar movie”…the 1st and forever boss is Dreamworks only then comes Pixar.Sorry to all Pixar fans but when they do something impressive Dreamworks has already done years ago.Without taking in consideration that Dreamworks movies are way better in all ways.

  • So it’s not a movie-based game in the strictest sense. Will it have a new continuity?
Do i have to know anything about it’s universe to get into it?
    I’ve only played one R&C.

  • Absolutely stupid idea not showing it at the E3 press conference. Ratchet and Clank is a flagship playstation brand.

  • My best friend’s ex-wife makes $75/hr on the laptop. She has been unemployed for eight months but last month her income with big fat bonus was over $15000 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more on this site…. WWW.EARNMORE9.COM

  • I’d much rather see this game be 900p/60fps.
Everyone is resolution crazy these days.
There is a huge difference IMO between 30fps and 60fps, but going from 900p to 1080p is barely noticeable.

As someone who loves this series and has recently just played through A Crack in Time (SIXTY FRAMES PER SECOND) again (for the 4th time) and then played Into the Nexus (THIRTY FRAMES PER SECOND) I have to say it suffers because of the drop in fluid game play. I was hoping the jump to the all powerful PS4 would have made 60fps a no brainer, but it turns out I was wrong.

Only a few companies, Nintendo included, see the light here. 60fps should be the goal.

  • Can you tell us when it’ll be available to pre-order?

  • ok i pre-ordered :-) Can’t wait but it’s going to make this feel like one LONG YEAR!

    • The trailer looks good, but I’m going to suggest that we wait for the reviews and (hopefully) a playable demo before pre-ordering.

I’m one of the biggest R&C fans around, but I have to admit that their decision to steer away from 60fps video feels like a huge misstep to me. All of their previous games have been running at 60fps, even dating back to the PS2 so it seems really weird that the almighty PS4, being “10x more powerful than the PS3”, can’t hit this mark.

Since it’s a re-imagining of the original I was expecting them to pull out all of the steps… 1080p/60fps (like R&C HD Remastered for the PS3) And with an option for Stereoscopic 3D, just like the remastered games., but not only they they not include the 3D option, they cut the smooth 60fps play down to only 30fps.

The only other 30fps Ratchet game I know is Into the Nexus and that was my least favorite out of all of them.
Parts of that game even made me feel motion sickness, which is something none of the others had done. I’m really worried the new one will do the same.

  • Will there be any multi-player involved?

  • When can I preorder on PS4 digitally?

  • I am so hyped for this game! I can’t wait! Will this pre-order bonus be available in Australia?
