Mega Man Legacy Collection Out Today on PS4

Mega Man is one of Capcom’s earliest and most beloved characters. I’ve even met gamers that have never played a Mega Man game before, but own Mega Man shirts or even have tattoos of him! We hope to make jumping into Mega Man the easiest it’s ever been with this collection of the series’ 8-bit origins: Mega Man 1-6 for only $14.99.

Whether you’re new to the series or it’s just been a while, we’ve put together a little video history piece about what each of the games introduced, and what made them special.

Alongside the six games, which display in crisp HD sprites, we’re including a ton of content in Mega Man Legacy Collection that will let everyone really get to know the rest of what makes Mega Man so timeless:

  • Database: All six games include a Database that features a description of every enemy and which weapon they’re weak against. The best part is you can jump into a practice fight against any Robot Master with all weapons available to you before diving into the full game.
  • Museum: We compiled hundreds of production art pieces, concept work, unused enemy sketches, and other cool artifacts. Seeing all this art that was the source of the pixel art in the game feels like a treat because it’s a new way to see the games you and I played.
  • Music player: The music is one of the strongest components of what makes Mega Man so popular, and this player puts all 100+ tracks from Mega Man 1-6 in one spot for you to enjoy.
  • Challenges: A series of 50+ challenges that take some of the most difficult sections of the games and arranges them in a time trial format. It’s fully supported by leaderboards and video replays for the top times so you can learn from the best.

What sets Challenge Mode apart from just playing the full game as fast as you can is that you have access to all the weapons and items from the respective game for each section of a challenge. This creates situations where you can find the fastest way through a stage that’s not normally available. For example, you can find ways to use Item 2 (Jet Sled) to bypass areas on Air Man’s stage. I’m looking forward to seeing how creative you all get to get through areas quickly. It’s a whole new challenge when you have all the tools at your disposal.

Before I leave you, there’s one question I want to answer that I often see. Why Mega Man 1-6? Good question. Allow me to introduce developer Digital Eclipse, a team that is deeply rooted in the preservation of video games as a valid media of our cultural heritage, on the same level as movies and TV. They’ve even worked with the Smithsonian to get video games in historic displays.

Digital Eclipse specializes in creating an authentic experience that is completely accurate to the original game by using their new engine that can do this without porting or emulating. All the original glitches, cheats, flicker is there naturally because of the quality of this reproduction effort. This tech is currently developed for games made on the original console Mega Man 1-6 were developed for, hence the games in this collection.

If there are any Capcom 8-bit games you’d like to see get the same treatment, I’m all ears! Now it’s time for me to sign off. You can go download and enjoy Mega Man Legacy Collection on PS4 today!

why no megaman legacy collection for my legacy handheld

    • It’s on the PS4. If you have one and a Vita, just stream it over. That’s what I am planning on doing at least when the store updates and I can buy it.

    • dkarlowicz10

I have a PS4 and Vita, but can’t stream during my commute to work on the train (which is 1 hour).

    • Yes, No Vita = No Buy for me.

If you can do it for the 3DS, there’s no reason you can’t do it for the Vita, except you, the publisher, think that Vita users will not buy your games, which is an insult to the Vita users.

  • madmanwithabox12

Would be great if this was on Vita.

  • Um I would love to see the same treatment with the classic 2d street fighter type games.

Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2 (and all iterations), Street Fighter Alpha series, Street Fighter 3 and all its iterations.

Not sure if its possible with copyright stuff, but seeing all the marvel, xmen, vs capcom fighting games too would be awesome too! 2D will never die! ;)

  • Alucard-XII

Make an update with an option to remove slowdowns and flickering. There is no reason to not keep this option available.

    • Agreed. This is the biggest reason I’m not picking this up. If I want slowdowns and sprite flickering I’ll play the originals.

    • @both of you, this was left in to keep in step with the nes’ limitations. This means that it’s a true port of the classic games. Don’t like it, don’t buy it. You’ll probably end up crying over the fact that there aren’t tutorials or unlimited lives as well. Get good.

    • – Having it as an option won’t hurt anyone
      – They added a savestat feature, which goes against your claim of keeping the authentic NES experience

Your assumption that our request is based on lack of competency in the games is wrong

    • supremestarhawk

reaxion813 Actually, any slowdown that was a result of a hardware limitation of the NES was taken out, but anything that was a part of the *actual code* was left in.

    • The reason why they can’t make an option to turn it off is because this thing is just an emulator running NES ROMs so all the game will work just like how they did on the NES.

  • Again, copyrights may be an issue but how about a Disney collection with Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin etc?

  • From what I’ve seen this looks like a really good collection, that serves to honor the original games well. That said, it seems like missed opportunities the game doesn’t have a Platinum trophy, or be coming to Vita. Vita seemed like a perfect fit.

    • I was wondering why the difference in Trophies between the Xbone and PS4 versions?
Xbox One version has 21 trophies (worth 1000 gamer score) while the PS4 version only has 13 trophies (no platinum).
Since the collection cost the same on both platforms why are PS4 users getting less of a product?

  • alarionultima

    why no vita?

  • madmanwithabox12

Also, whilst I’m here, I think it’s disgraceful that nobody from Capcom even mentioned the fact that Resident Evil Revelations 2 came out on Vita last week. Why wouldn’t you promote your own game?

  • I shall also chime in with the masses wishing this was on Vita.

If it can work on 3DS (which already has all these games in the VC anyway), it can work on the Vita.

  • CraddaPoosta

This would be awesome on the Vita. I already own the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2, which has two more games, but less bonus content.

If this were cross-play or had a Vita port, I would snap it up in an instant.

  • jrodfantastic

This collection is absolute amazing for two big reasons:

    1) Mega Man 1-6 are truly great games that gamers haven’t had access to for a long time.

    And

    2) If this collection succeeds, it will truly open the door for many other “legacy” games that need a re-release. Street Fighter, Mega Man X, Ace Attorney, X-Men, Onimusha… (I want to list others but will limit my choices to Capcom titles)

  • I would also say the following:
    * was hoping for a vita version as well (especially since a 3DS version was announced?)
    * also would love Disney collection (duck tales, chip and dale, etc)
    * as for Capcom games to preserve, not necessarily 8 bit but, Progear and Warzard/Red Earth. Both of these are unavailable on any platforms to date

  • Seriously wishing this was on the Vita. I mean not even Mega Man 9 or 10 can be played on it for whatever reason.

  • Can we get a Mega Man Gameboy Legcacy Collection next? Those 5 games have a much higher quality to “meh” ratio than the NES bunch could ever dream of having. :)

  • It would be awesome if it was Megaman X collection

  • waaaaaaaaaa why can’t everything be on my VITAAAAAAA – Almost Everyone on Every PS Blog post.

Geesh. THANK YOU SONY for bringing this to PlayStation.

    • TeamGreen615

Scuba, You clearly have not invested the money in a Vita like many others have. Some of us get more time with our Vitas than our consoles and wifi is not always available. Don’t let things get to you so easily. Have nice day!

    • gerneric123

What did Sony have to do with this release?

    • markedman54

I play the Vita waaaaaay more than my PS4. and remote play is awful on almost every title I’ve tried.

    • TeamGreen615

Who said Sony had anything to do with the release?? People just voicing their opinions and would like for it to be offered on the Vita.

    • TeamGreen615

Very nice response by you Sir. Hopefully they don’t take the Vita requests the wrong way. I already own some of these on a different handheld device but I will still pick it up at sometime on a Sony platform. Cheers!

    • TeamGreen615

      @#16

    • @TeamGreen615 I was talking to ScubaOwl. He was praising Sony for bringing this game to PS4, but Sony isn’t involved?

    • Why does it bother you? Vita owners see this is released on 3ds yet they don’t get a version? It’s only natural to be pissed off. It doesn’t help that sony discontinued the vita so their best bet is be vocal in the capcom posts in hopes they change their mind.

    • If it’s coming to the Vita but not PS4, you PS4 users will do the same.

  • TeamGreen615

    • I hear ya, dude. But these guys work hard and deserve more positive comments, IMHO. And its not trivial to port a game to another piece of hardware. Having said that, I hope they DO bring it to Vita for ya though. All the best.

  • The 8-bit Capcom game I’d like to see get this treatment is Destiny of an Emperor.

  • It’s not on the PS Store. Where is it?

    • The store is updated early evening every Tuesday (eastern time). It should be available with that update later today.

  • It’s not on PSN. How am I supposed to buy this?
Why even post the game is out if the game is not out?

  • rockman_uli

    Please be crossbuy on vita

  • Rey Jimenez, you might want to get someone to provide a communication to users explaining why this is not on the PS Store.

    • The store is updated early evening every Tuesday (eastern time). It should be available with that update later today.

MY BUSTER IS READY. THANK YOU CAPCOM

  • Explanation on why playstation gets less trophies than the competition?
Does capcom think we are second rate players? Or is it that playstation dollars are less valuable than xbox dollars?

I’m glad the game isn’t on PSN yet, it will give me time to reconsider my purchase since capcom thinks I’m a dirty second rate player who deserves less for the same money.

  • @ MikeChk12
This kind of thing happens every week. PR person says “in store now” and it isn’t. People ought to know by now to wait for the store update.

    @Andoracer
Blame Sony’s ancient policies regarding trophies and “small” digital games.

    • For some reason I highly doubt Sony forced capcom to remove trophies from the playstation version.

    • Those Trophy requirements are no longer in effect. It is now up to the publisher what kind of trophy list they want for their game. The only difference between which list you want is how much QA/testing is required for certification last I heard.

  • markedman54

This would be perfect and I would be all over it, if it was on the

    ***** V I T A *****

  • I am a huge mega man fan but no 7-10 is a joke and no vita support ,what a loss I mean at least add mega man soccer

  • also mega man x > mega man

  • It’s a shame that this set offers less than the compilation that was released over a decade ago for the PS2. That had Mega Man 1 thru 8, plus 2 Mega Man Arcade games, plus 2 cartoon episodes.

  • What time can we expect this to be on PSN? It isn’t there as I make this comment.

  • Since you guys are releasing Mega Mans 1-6 on the PS4 in a collection. would it be possible to release new versions of Mega Man: The Power Battle & Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters on the PlayStation Store, like you did with Street Fighter III, Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, & Marvel vs. Capcom Origins. If you did that, I’d be able to sell my PS2 copy of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection.

  • I’m glad to see that I wasted my money buying Mega Man 1 through 4 when the PlayStation Store had them on sale 3 weeks ago. I’m not going to re-buy these games again, although I’m impressed by the massive amount of bonus content in this collection.

    • When will Capcom release Mega Man 5 and Mega Man 6 as PSOne classics?

I already have MM 1-4 as well, so it also seems like a waste to buy this subpar collection for PS4 when I could have all 6 games for both my PS3 and PS Vita.

  • Thank you for this collection! Since you’re taking suggestions:

    – Mega Man 7-10 and Mega Man & Bass
    – Mega Man X collection
    – Capcom / Disney NES classics (Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, etc.)

  • Two things:
    1. I agree that this should also be on the Vita. It would have been a perfect fit. I figure, there’s a pointless 3DS version (pointless because all these games are on the VC), so why not the Vita?

    2. This is a nice collection, I like the database and music player. Despite that, this collection is still lacking because the Anniversary Collection offered more games than this, so really it does feel like a ripoff especially if you’re charging $30 for the physical release. For that price, I hope the physical release has something more than the digital.

  • To go with my previous comment, that’s not to say this is a bad set or bad price. It just feels…Incomplete.

As far as other 8Bit Capcom games I’d like to see get a full work up like this, there are a ton:

    1942
    1943
    Ghost N Goblins (NES)
    Ghouls N Ghosts (SMS)
    Disney Licensed Games
    Mighty Final Fight
    Commando
    Trojan
    8Bit version of Strider

    • Joe,
1942, 1943, Trojan, commando, & Ghosts n goblins are all available on ps3 in the CAPCOM ARCADE CABINET in their arcade forms…
(along with some other goodies like gun.smoke, legendary wings, & section Z)

  • 1,000 gamerscore on Xbox and a few trophies/no plat on PS4. Sony sure makes the choice easy.

    • It’s not Sony’s fault there are less Trophies than achievements. It’s Capcom’s choice to have a smaller list of Trophies. Sony changed their rules. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has a platinum. If the old rules were still in effect, it would have no Platinum trophy.

  • dauntless5183

Where is it? i cant find it on the store.

  • Why are we getting shafted on Trophies again? Last I checked there was no longer any restriction on Trophies unless the publishers decide to do so. For a collection with six games in it, having only 9 Bronze, 3 Silver and 1 Gold seems pretty lazy and imo rather insulting.

    • My thoughts exactly. Both Steam and Xbox get 24 trophies while Playstation gets 13 and it doesn’t even have the complete all six games one.
Will be skipping this, not because I care about the trophies that much, I could get it on steam if that was the case. But because they are purposely giving us an inferior product for the same prize.

    • I agree with you, & would like to add: This collection IS getting a retail release. Imagine buying it @ retail (which is prob only going to be 19.99) but then it having this bare 12 trophy set? pretty lame actually…

    • StuTX it’s worse than you think, the retail version is gonna cost $30.

    • It really is a shame. If you don’t care about trophies then having/not having a certain amount or platinum simply wouldn’t matter… Where as if you do care about trophies, would’t you (as the developer or marketing) want to have more trophies in it so that it would appeal to that section of the player demographic? SO Dumb!

  • Anyone heard or know of a time this bad boy will be available. I’ve been stalking the store since 1am

    • I read in th blog later today but I’m just ready to go. Funny how there is nothing in the store advertising it in he coming soon or new this week categories

  • What a let down, was waiting for this since it was announced only to find out both the steam and xbox versions are superior with double the achievements.
No thanks capcom I won’t buy this inferior product you’re offering me.
Rey Jimenez be sure to commend your superiors on my behalf for the great job they’ve done in delivering a subpar version for the playstation.

  • I would buy this for PS Vita, but I’m simple not interested on buying 8-bit games for my PS4 (I would have bought a Wii U instead in if that were the case).

Not to mention that this collection is underwhelming compared to the PS2 one.

I’m a big Mega Man fan, but I will have to skip on such lazy release.

  • ^not a big Mega Man fan. Don’t tarnish us pls.

    • The only one tarnishing the fanbase would be you, praising Capcom for throwing you scraps.

If Capcom wanted to make a next-gen only release they should have made remakes of these games similar to Mega Man Powered Up (a remake of the original Mega Man with tons of extra content), not release the oldest games from the series in such format that even the 3DS can run it.

As Mega Man fan since the NES era, I definitely can’t but see this and think it’s just a lazy cash grab is read of a proper relaunch of the series that Capcom had shelved.

  • Is there a reason I don’t see this on the store?

  • Also. Why does everyone hate everything nowadays. Like its just trophies. If you aren’t a mega man fan than don’t buy it. Chances are you aren’t anyway if you’re complaining about everything

  • WHERE IS IT!!!!! I can’t find it on the store, and judging by the comments people can’t find it as well.

  • I can’t seem to find the game on the PlayStation store, had no problem finding I Am Bread. Anyone else having this issue?

  • It should be up no later than an hour and a half from now, which is the usual complete store update.

If you pay attention on the web store, it’s been slowly updating.

  • It’s now up on the store.

  • wilsonfamily

I see it on the store but it says it is $18.99, I thought it was supposed to be $14.99. Will this be fixed?
