Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Out Today on PS4, PS3

Hey everyone, it’s T.K. back again on PlayStation.Blog. I’ve had the pleasure of being able to peek in time-to-time to talk about the latest and greatest titles from Konami on PlayStation platforms, but today by far outranks them all. I am incredibly proud to announce the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on PS4 and PS3, available today on disc and via PlayStation Store.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid, for those uninitiated, is the decade-spanning, globe-trotting, epic spy saga about the consequences of war, nuclear détente, and occasionally cardboard boxes. The latest entry, The Phantom Pain, takes place 9 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (also available on PS4/PS3) as the legendary soldier Big Boss wakes from his long coma since the events of Ground Zeroes.

With the fire of revenge burning in his heart, he sets out to rebuild his former mercenary legion with allies new and old, and swears vengeance upon Skullface and the mysterious XOF organization.

Lucky for Boss, he has a big, beautiful playground to work with. Boasting a map bigger than all previous games combined, you will plan, execute, and command the battlefield. And when you finally fight your way to the end of the conclusion to this secret chapter of Metal Gear history, the war rages on in our online Forward Operating Base mode, which pits you in a 1-on-1 match to attack (or defend) critical materials from fellow players around the world! If squad vs. squad is more your tune, we have our full-blown multiplayer coming October 6th, which gives you plenty of time to tackle the massive single-player mode.

Need more field support while you are tackling tough missions? Grab The Phantom Pain companion App for in-depth second screen functionality and tactical support, also available starting today for iOS and Android devices.

So, to recap, amazing story, massive gameplay, and great multiplayer all in one package. What are you waiting for? We hope you’ll enjoy Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

  • As this is likely Hideo Kojima’s last Metal Gear (for real this time), I’m so glad to see he sent the series off on a very high note :-)

  • Can’t wait to play this tonight!

  • Can’t wait to jump into this one!
Random question: Will there be a custom audio profile for the gold headsets? Thanks!

  • Shame that PS Store isn’t working. Wanted to play this game on my day off of work, but guess not.

  • No Vita, No Buy.

    • Remote play…?

I’m afraid to think of the sound my Vita might make after trying to run “a map bigger than all previous games combined” ;-)

    • @ paulogy – I guess you ain’t talking about Phantom Pain there.

  • Konami is evil

    A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME

  • KazeEternal

Pro tip. Companion app links are much appreciated in articles.

  • So how long before Kojima make up with Konami and work on MGS6?

  • Once that clock hits midnight the store should update with not only MGSV but all the free ps+ titles also. It’s really sucks having to wait until 4PM on the east coast for the store to update. BTW I voted for Zombie vikings and think grow home is too much of a kiddy game. I wish the voting system was different in that individuals get the title they vote for, thank you.

  • Plan on getting this at Best Buy for the PS3 soon.

If Konami plans on making a new game in the Metal Gear franchise (with or without Hideo Kojima), Please make it a PS4 exclusive since the Metal Gear Solid audience is mostly on PlayStation consoles (the games sell better on those consoles).

  • I don’t know this game. Must be one of the indies I keep hearing about. is it any good?

  • Picked the game up on my lunch break, and I can’t wait to get home and play it. If possible, give my regards to Kojima and his team for a job well done, not only for The Phantom Pain, but all the amazing content they’ve contributed to the industry over the last few decades. It’s been a long journey, and it’s bittersweet to see it come to a close.

    Hi Travis. <3

  • Collector’s Edition sitting on the desk right beside me, can’t wait until work ends to fire it up.

PS: I’m looking forward to all of the pictures online of Snake’s Bionic Arm doing inappropriate things; I already sent a middle finger pick to my brother :)

  • I’ve been playing the game a lot today (school starts tomorrow so I gotta enjoy myself while I can) and it is simply fantastic. The amount of freedom in the gameplay and the MOB elements easily make this the best game in the series from a gameplay perspective. Jury’s still out on the story though. First impressions, not enough cut-scenes (the cassettes are nice though).

  • Really dying to play Phantom Pain as I’m a huge MGS fan but I can’t.My fault for not playing Peace Walker yet.
Been following Phantom Pain since it was announced and damn the game looks outstanding…eager to see if it can top MGS4,I doubt though.

Game stops after first mission as screen goes black and says installing game data do not turn of system 507 seconds… and still nothing! I have restarted the game 2 times already and it keeps saying the same thing! any thoughts anyone???

  • DragonIrons

Wait, Ground Zeroes came 9 years before this? I thought Ground Zeroes was an overpriced demo for phantom pain… I thought it was actually the first lvl or something. Isnt’ that what they always said? Great….. so if I ever get this I’ll have to get that too……

I probably won’t get this though. After Konami pretty much gave all real gamers the middle finger by going to mobile games (freaking tablet games)….. and their stupid pachinko machines (whatever that is). Then there’s the crap they puled with Kojima….

    • Blind-Lunacy

@19 I thought all the Dumb ones was Eradicated from the PSN Universe, Then you came along. After playing a days worth of the phantom pain i can safely tell you that you wont need ground zeroes to play phantom pain, they recap the story in the beginning telling Big Boss all what happened before and during his Coma (that includes the recap of ground zeroes).

If you have Ground Zeroes though you are free to Use your save file and get some benefits. for example all the prisoners and personnel you extracted in ground zeroes will work for you in motherbase. you get snakes sneaking suit early (his GZ outfit)

and yeah it is sad that Konami pretty much gave up on us. but Kojima gave us MGSV as a farewell gift.

And just like that, the summer drought-that-wasn’t-a-drought-thanks-to-PSN+ came to a close, and then the rains came.

So excited to finally get this game. The prologue is pretty crazy, and I’m sure it will take a long time to figure out what happened there. Love the Kojima craziness.

I certainly hope to see more games from Kojima in the future, but this is looking to be a great one so far!
