Minecraft: Story Mode Begins October 13th on PS4, PS3

If you visited Telltale at PAX Prime last month, you might have gotten a sneak peek at Minecraft: Story Mode, or at least seen a pretty darn cool booth. No worries if you didn’t make it out to Seattle though, because we can announce today that you’ll be able to get your hands on the season premiere of Minecraft: Story Mode next month! Episode 1 — The Order of the Stone will debut digitally for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, October 13th, and at retail on Tuesday, October 27th.

Each episode will be available to purchase individually via PlayStation Store, or you can pick up the season pass to get access to Episodes 1-5 as they release. The retail edition will ship with the premiere episode on the disc, and will grant access to the subsequent four episodes in the season as they become available to download via online updates. The season will also be coming to PS Vita — stay tuned for more details on exact dates.

As per usual, we’re keeping plenty of exciting details under wraps so you can have the fun of discovering them for yourself. We can give you a little taste of what to expect, though…

In Minecraft: Story Mode, playing as either a male or female hero named Jesse, you’ll embark on a perilous adventure across the Overworld, through the Nether, to the End, and beyond. You and your friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect; slayers of the Ender Dragon. While at EnderCon in hopes of meeting Gabriel the Warrior, Jesse’s friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and you must set out on a quest to find The Order of the Stone if you are to save your world from oblivion.

We’ve been working closely with the people at Mojang to ensure that Minecraft: Story Mode absolutely feels like a part of the world that Minecraft players already know and love, with a cinematic story and trademark Telltale choice-based gameplay. We know how important customization is to the creative minds who play Minecraft, so we’ve paid special attention to implementing that in Minecraft: Story Mode, too. This is the first Telltale game where YOU get to choose the appearance of the player character. Not only do you get to play as either a male or female version of Jesse, you’ll also be able to select from 3 different looks for each.

We’ve also managed to snag some seriously all-star voice talent for the season. Male Jesse is portrayed by Patton Oswalt (you might recognize his voice from Ratatouille and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), while female Jesse is voiced by Catherine Taber (she’s been in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Marvel Heroes). The season will also feature Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West, and Paul Reubens — and there are still more cast details to come! We couldn’t possibly be more excited to be working with such an amazing group of actors.

And one quick note for those looking forward to the season finales of Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones — they are shaping up to be two of our most ambitious finales yet! Look out for more news on those coming out soon.

Thanks for reading, and as ever, let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Is Vita still getting Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones too?

    • dkarlowicz10

I have the same question. Beat me to it.

    • FinalMacstorm

Yes, please just let us know one way or another.

    • After how poorly Walking Dead ran on Vita, I am not interested in any TellTale games on Vita. Much better to play if have choice on PS3 or PS4 (or Xbox or PC or Mac or PC or Smartphone; basically anything other than Vita).

  • Based on my reading between the lines with the box art, this is going to be released physically, but with a download code? What is the possibility of getting an offline version once the season is complete? Without it, there won’t be any recourse for people to play the game many years down the road when the PSN servers go offline like they did for the PSP.

    • “The retail edition will ship with the premiere episode on the disc, and will grant access to the subsequent four episodes in the season as they become available to download via online updates. ”

I would also like the answer to the once they are all available will you do a “Deluxe/GOTY/Complete” version for retail. I don’t play these games until they are complete with all episodes released, would be nice to get it all on disc to make it easy on the kids.

    • Good and valid concern

  • How about finishing GOT and the surprisingly good Borderlands first? I love you TT but you are starting to bite off more than you can chew.

  • This week is supposed to be one of the Vitas shining moments, and so far we received Gravity Rush 2 to PS4 only, Facebook Support Removed, and now Minecraft Story Mode to PS4 & PS3.

Checking the Playstation Blog is really starting to frustrate me.

    • I guess I should have read the entire article first.
But still it would have been good to at least mention the Vita in their opening Title.

    • madmanwithabox12

It should really be tagged with Vita, but eh. This is the PlayStation blog for you. Vita is the plague apparently.

  • Will it have puzzles in it? Not getting it unless it has puzzles in it. Do a new Sam & Max please. Thanks.

  • This Is one title I would be very grateful to know if it’s Cross buy? PS3 /PS4

I like to play TellTale games, but… Will they ever release a complete game? I’m tired of this episodic stuff. I’m still waiting for Wolf Among Us to end… Who knows if I’ll even be alive by the time they release it.

  • YorlecmNwahs

So you can’t build stuff? What’s the point?

    • veryhoudini11

The point is adding a story to the overly popular, minecraft world. We could say that’s completely unnecessary but at least this is a spinoff and has the potential to be a great one at that. It would be nice to not just look like minecraft but to have included some sandbox aspects to stay even more true to the original game but again that would take away from the point of this game.

  • WHY?

But on a non serious note, you’ll probably have to wait till oh I don’t know 2017 before you’ll get to finish the story. (Just in time for for for a part 2 to be announced)

  • I was really looking forward to this, playing Minecraft a lot. But now that I read choice based gameplay, it seems more like an easy pass.

  • gokumegasayajin

Well, its like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, so i´m not so exited about it. Since it´s the same game but on a Minecraft story, well, the only thing that changes it´s the graphics and the story but not the gameplay. It would be good to make a Minecraft RPG right? It would fit more, i think.

    • veryhoudini11

Yeah an RPG Minecraft would be awesome, and something that can still happen. However that is not something that Telltale Games does. They make story driven, decision based, adventure games. If you don’t like these type of games that is totally fine, but plenty of people do and will certainly enjoy this title.

  • Great to hear it’s coming to Vita. After playing The Wolf Among Us last year, it seemed like Telltale had finally figured out how to balance quality and parallel productions.

Still, after the horribly buggy (and frankly, ugly) port of The Walking Dead to PS4, which Sony somehow let pass certification, I’ll take a pass until unpaid reviewers verify there aren’t embarrassingly awful problems. I’ve been a TellTale supporter since the GameTap days, but I’ve been waiting for things to pull together as far as animation, lip sync, and rigging quality for a few years now. iPad versions of the games get post-release updates, have sharper textures, and re just generally better than PlayStation versions.a

  • Vita version?

  • So wait, the disc version has the first episode on it, and then you get a voucher to download the rest…that kinda defeats the purpose of having a disc. I hope there will be a full disc release later on for people who don’t have downloading the episodes as an option. I always wait for Telltale games to come out on disc.

    • SonicPrinny42

The post indicates that there is no voucher to put in. What it states Is that the retail disc version is basically the “Season Pass” that includes the first episode & gets free updates/patches that contain each subsequent episode (& possibly bug-fixes & optimizations, but given their track-record…).
Either way, were I to pick up the retail version, I would wait ’til the “Complete” edition is released.
This is an interesting way to get (uninformed?) parents to buy it as a holiday gift for their MineCraft-Obsessed kids, as a gift “that keeps on giving”, quite literally.

  • dkarlowicz10

I noticed that you guys are bringing Back to the Future to PS4. Any other PS3 telltale games in the future? Would love to see a Sam and Max and Monkey Island Anthologies on PS4. How about Hector?

  • smithrancio123

i cant wait for this game to come out for PS4 and PSVita

  • I’m confused… Everything I have read up until now says this was supposed to be released today, but… where is it? When I look for it in the Playstation store it simply does not exist. Did they just decide to not release it and just didn’t tell us?
