6 Ways to Win the War in Transformers: Devastation on PS4, PS3

This week, after four months of anticipation, long-time Transformers fans were finally able to get their hands on Transformers: Devastation on PS4 and PS3. The latest action-brawler from the gurus at PlatinumGames pits five of the franchise’s most iconic Autobots against an army of angry Decepticons.

Grimlock, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Optimus Prime are ready to roll, but before you saddle up, I’d like to pass along a handful of tips that should help you win the war.

Transformers: Devastation

For Tighter Turns, Hold Circle While Driving

Transformers: Devastation moves at a breakneck pace, so you’ll need all the control that you can get. In vehicle mode, holding circle will give your tires the grip needed to take those corners at supersonic speed. Why slow down when you have sticky tires?

Hold R1 to Spin Your Tires After a Vehicle Slam

After putting an enemy on his back with a vehicle slam (simply jump straight up, then hold R1), you can continue dealing damage by holding R1. You’ll spin your tires on the downed enemy, draining his precious hit points.

Headshots with Ranged Weapons Trigger Opportunities for Vehicle Attacks

In Transformers: Devastation, honing those sharpshooting skills will open up new avenues for attack. In fact, scoring a headshot with one of the game’s ranged weapons will throw your enemies off balance and trigger a vehicle attack opportunity, even at long range.

Learn the Delay Combos

PlatinumGames is famous for creating deep, intricate combo systems, and this game is no different. All of the characters in Transformers: Devastation have a set of combos that require a bit of patience. You’ll press a sequence of buttons, pause for a bit, and then continue. Controlling the timing of those thumbs is essential. All of these combos can be found in the game’s move list.

Hold Square at Max Vehicle Speed to do a Flying Uppercut

When your vehicle starts shooting flames from the exhaust, you’re at max speed. From here, holding square will trigger a rush attack, resulting in a spectacular uppercut that will launch you and your enemy into the air. Once airborne, immediately hit the enemy using the Triangle button to trigger a vehicle attack opportunity. This will result in some crazy air combos. To perform this you’ll need to purchase Rush Combo in the Lab.

Parry is Super Useful

The timing on this defensive move is difficult, but it’s incredibly powerful if used correctly. You can even parry Devastator’s drill projectiles in mid-air and throw them back at him. Parry is available for purchase in the Lab.

Hopefully this collection of tricks will give you an edge in the battle against the Decepticons.

Transformers: Devastation is available right now on PS4 and PS3. Happy smashing.

  • Should be on vita too

  • To be honest, with the size of this game, I feel it would have been better as a downloadable title instead of a full priced game. If it were $20 or offered more gameplay (possibly even a Decepticon campaign) i would have grabbed this right away. For now, I’ll have to wait until the eventual price drop.

For what’s in it, it looks fun and nostalgic though and reviews so far have been good (aside from the content vs price aspect).

$50 is a generous price. There’s quite a bit of replay value in all the difficulties and challenge mode levels. Can’t say I agree it’s $20 game.

  • Thanks for this, did not now about the spinning your wheels attack. I luvs this game takes me back to watching the toon after school. Only complaint is the renaming of a couple of the characters and no co-op. The insecticon name is SHRAPNEL in game he is SKRAPNEL, Bumblebee got renamed to GOLDBUG not GOLDFIRE. other than that great game and I can’t for part 2.

    • Hasbro are not always able to retain (or renew or re-acquire) the trademarks to all of the original G1 names – even when it comes to creating new toys based on those characters.

There was a time not so long ago when Bluestreak had to be called “SIverstreak”, or when Trailbraker was listed as “Trailcutter”, to give two such examples.

Sometimes the original names do become available again, but often too late for a particular toy wave or licenced project.

  • Are there any plans to update the game so that we can play as the Decepticons? I want the evil side to win!

  • Looks like this game’s Menasor is partly based on the current Combiners Wars/Generations Menasor toy; which is made up of six combined Deceptions (the Voyager-sized Motormaster as the torso, four Deluxe-sixed Stunticons as the arms and legs, plus the Legends-scale Backjack as the chestplate) rather than the original G1 toy’s five.

Notably, of the origin Stunticon roster, the only one not initially released as a part of the Combiner Wars set was Wildrider; his spot was taken by a “new” character, Offroad. But then, that didn’t stop Hasbro from releasing “Brake-Neck” (AKA Wildrider, but re-named due to copyright reasons) later, in order to complete the “classic” set.

Meanwhile, TakaraTomy sell the five “classic” Stunticon characters (with Wildrider subbed in for Offroad) as a gift set over in Japan. It seems you can combine them into Menasor without installing a sixth “chestplate” piece, which closer matches the dynamic of the original G1 team.

The original g1 motormaster came with a small roller car which is probably what that legends car is in reference to.

It’s looks cool looking forward to playing transformers

  • McWorked_You

I had no idea about a few of those tips. Thank you.

The game is amazing. I love it all. The graphics are top-notch. Controls are as tight as usual with P*.

As a lifelong Transformers fan, I’ll say it’s the coolest I’ve ever seen any of the robots in disguise.

I hate to even start with this, but a competitive multilayer arena game mode would be pretty cool for a game in the future, much akin to Anarchy Reigns.

  • Thank you, these tips are incredibly useful! Listen up everybody: buy this game, it is incredibly fun to play.

  • looks fun hopefully ill get it .. =D
