Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin Revealed for PlayStation VR

It seems like just the other day we were announcing a new Psychonauts game, and now we’re announcing another! What is this, Christmas time? Oh right, it is I guess — well let’s enjoy it, then!

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin was announced today at PlayStation Experience, as a PlayStation VR game coming to PS4 next year! It tells the story of what happens immediately after the end of Psychonauts which was left on a cliffhanger…

At the end of Psychonauts (Spoilers, you guys!) Raz is recognized as a great PSI-Cadet and is asked to join his tutors as a fully fledged Psychonaut! But just as Raz is about to go home from camp with his father, news arrives that the Grand Head of the Psychonauts (and Lili’s father) Truman Zanotto, has been kidnapped. The team, Raz and Lili included, fly off in the Psychonauts jet to rescue him. It’s time to tell that story!

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will bridge the story gap between the original Psychonauts and the forthcoming sequel! Did we mention we were making a sequel? Well we want to, anyway — help us make it a reality!

If you can make this, why do you need crowdfunding for the sequel?

Because Sony is paying for this to support their VR gear, no publisher wants to pay for a sequel to an old platformer that didn’t sell that well.

why make it VR exclusive? some of us don’t want to or can’t use VR (I have to wear glasses, and I know VR wouldn’t work well with it, not even counting the fact it’s expensive)

I adore the first game and I really want this to be released as a non-VR game too. Making it VR Only (especially PS VR only), is knocking out a massive chunk of the psychonauts fanbase. I know I myself didn’t discover it until it was released on PC via GOG, long after its initial release.

    • This is probably a different experience from Psychonauts 2, optimized with unique gameplay for VR. Similar to how you have unique gameplay using the Vita touchscreen.

This was the one Double Fine announcement I was unabashedly excited for, since i know the producers at Sony won’t allow sub-par art/design in the first wave of PS VR titles. I really liked Double Fine’s approach with their Kinect titles (despite the tech limitations of Kinect) and am looking forward to more of that fun mechanic innovation!
