Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness Launches June 28 on PS4

Francis Santos's Avatar Posted by Product Lead, Square Enix

The greatest sci-fi JRPG returns! The next installment in the Star Ocean franchise, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, comes to PS4 on June 28. Yes, it’s a mere three months away!

This year actually marks the 20th anniversary since the release of the very first Star Ocean, so it’s a very special time for us at the office. We’re celebrating our fifth dive into a universe we all know and love, and we can’t wait for you to experience it with us.

New to Star Ocean, you say? Well here’s a couple of things you should know.

All the titles in the series share a rich history and universe, but you should know that you don’t have to play the previous games to enjoy the story of this one. It’s not like watching the third movie in a trilogy without watching the first two — you won’t get lost.

Apart from the story, the battle system is really a driving factor in why players return to the series. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness will actually boast the ability to have up to seven ally characters on screen and battling simultaneously. (Clears throat) Seven!

To give you some perspective on that, imagine seven characters from your favorite fighting game banding together using their flashy abilities all on one screen simultaneously and obliterating enemies. Excited much?

Oh, you’re a series veteran?

Well, as you know it’s been five years since the launch of the last Star Ocean. So there’s been an itch to bring the franchise back to the top of the JRPG echelon. This was producer Shuichi Kobayashi’s mission from the start, and that passion has been contagious between our offices in Japan, Europe, and here in the United States.

He asked me to deliver this special message to Western fans:

“It’s been a while since our previous title, but the time has come for us to share the ‘story of the sea of stars’ with everyone once again. I am personally really happy to be able to take part in the revival of the series that I truly love. I believe that there is significance in announcing this title at a time when there aren’t many JRPG consumer titles being released compared to before.

“The series’ traditional exhilarating action battle has evolved with a party of a maximum of 7 characters, with easier-to-create combos. We have also prepared many elements that let you play for hours on end, so I hope you give it a try.

“I hope for your continued support so that the story of the sea of stars can continue even more.”

–Shuichi Kobayashi, Producer of Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

To give you a bit of background on the story. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness revolves around a blue-haired swordsman named Fidel. Look at that hair. Can we all please live in a galaxy where our hair looks that good all the time?

Anyways, Fidel and his crew, which includes the pink-haired healer named Miki, embark on an adventure that will transcend space to protect a mysterious girl, Relia, from dark forces.

A few more things we’re excited to share:

  • The game will have dual audio options, meaning you can switch between English and Japanese voice over. If you prefer Japanese voice over, you can select to have English subtitles.
  • The characters were designed by “akiman” (Street Fighter series).
  • The score was composed by Motoi Sakuraba (Tales of series, Dark Souls series).

I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes! There is a Square Enix e-Store exclusive collector’s edition and it’s made up of some pretty sweet items. We’re only selling 7,500 of these so you’ll definitely want to grab one if you’re into having awesome, limited things that people will be jealous of.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness on PS4

  • A special collector’s edition box featuring the main cast of characters.
  • A special collector’s edition steelbook.
  • An 80-page hardcover art book featuring artwork from the entire Star Ocean series.
  • A music sampler with 16 tracks chosen specifically from composer Motoi Sakuraba.
  • Eight art cards featuring character illustrations by akiman.
  • A Pangalactic Federation ID Card.
  • In-Game DLC items to give you an edge in beginning your journey.
  • Six music themes to customize battle BGM to music from the Valkyrie Profile & Star Ocean series.

If you miss out on the collector’s edition, you can still pre-order to receive the Day One edition which will have the same DLC items, as well as two BGM themes from the Valkyrie Profile series you can play during battle.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness on PS4

Personally, I’m very proud to say that Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is my first title here working at Square Enix, and I’ve been blown away by how many fans of the series and JRPG fans in general are showing their support for the game.

I sincerely hope you’re all as excited as I am for launch, but until then, be sure to keep up to date with all of the new Star Ocean content through our “Star Log” live streams, which air on the Square Enix Twitch and YouTube channels.

The TLDR message of all this: Star Ocean is back.

if anything, they’d probably port the updated psp ports of the first and second games. (first departure and second story respectively) otherwise, stick to either the ps1 version on your ps3 or the psp. (it would be nice to have on psn though)

I have a question when you say 7 characters on screen do you mean 7 different players? Does it support online play?

    Hi remanutd5,

You can have up to 7 different characters in battle simultaneously and you can switch between 6 of them. It’s a singe-player game that lets you to switch up your combat play style based on your preference and/or strategy. I hope that answers your question :)

I was going to buy this game but after the game’s character designer Akira Yasuda, director Hiroshi Ogawa, and producer Shuichi Kobayash said that they censored the game because of an external pressure from the west, that’s when i and many gamers i know decided to not support this practice.

Censor is kind of annoying, but only in a very very very small way.

    SilverIzumaki said:

    April 12th, 9:49 am

it isn’t censorship for the west. it was an alteration to the core game universally. it was changed in the Japanese version as well. was it necessary? no.. even as a girl i can say with confidence it doesn’t make a difference. i’m still buying the game though because i love the series and don’t want it to die. still trying to figure out how i could cough up that dough without having to sell any animation cels.

    SilverIzumaki said:

    April 12th, 9:53 am

that was my first introduction to the series. is it the best? no. to be honest, it’s a tad on the grind-y side and the main character can come off as whiny at times but i still love it. not only for the battle system (which beats tales’ button mash system any day of the week) but for the story and fleshed out world. the only other time I felt so much in a real, breathing world was in ff14 (mostly aided by the fact that there were other players) also, the creation system is fun in this game.

Can’t wait for this game. But getting a little ****ed off at Square Enix Store Exclusive Collectors Editions. Not only can I not get the FF15 Ultimate Collector’s Edition, but the cost of doing business and the uncertainty of the shipping date is pretty annoying. Meanwhile Amazon.com, a company setup for this sort of thing has successfully delivered on release day, offers free shipping, and to be honest packages a lot of their collectors editions better.

Thankfully there is nothing I want in the SO Collectors Edition, but your limit quantities (30000 for FF15) is a bit of a kick in the balls to your fan base.

I hope the collectors edition won’t be in limited quantities like FFXV, I won’t be able to prorder it until next month. I’ve been a fan of the series since The Second Story, and have purchased every title day one since then. Would be nice if you guys can start releasing the others on ps4 (and Vita if possible). I would love to have the entire series on one console (and would double buy 1 and 2 for Vita to keep it on the go at all times).

I can’t wait for this game, 7 in combat is gonna be interesting as hell, especially for the inevitable special dungeons on the way to Gabriel Celeste (you know he’ll be waiting)

    CHOMPlSON said:

    April 4th, 5:54 pm

This article says 7500 copies of collectors edition, but the SE store hasn’t sold out yet. Unlike FFXV, they were thoughtful enough have a 1-per-customer limit. They don’t bill you for pre-orders until just before releases (10 days), and they’ll send you an email just before that letting you know when to expect it. You might as well pre-order it now.

This IS the original game. It hasn’t been “censored” for North America, or anywhere else. tri-Ace altered an outfit before the game even released. So importing the Japanese version would get you the exact same thing.

Besides, all they did was change french-cut panties into boy shorts. It’s not like they covered up cleavage or filled in all the diamonds on Fiore’s outfit.

    Just FYI.

Appreciate that the Collectors Edition was able to make it over in some form. Although compared to the Ultimate edition in Japan, this is very subpar.

http://gematsu.com/2015/09/star-ocean-5-ultimate-box-announced-japan

Difference being the figure and 5 disc soundtrack. The figure I don’t mind as much and I suppose there is the price point too. But really don’t like the sampler soundtrack considering this IS a collectors edition and a “DEMO” of the original soundtrack is included. I seen these being done multiple times and it’s quite niggling just because it defeats the purpose of this being called a collectors edition. Includes digital DLC as well – again being a physical collectors edition.
