PlayStation 3.50 System Software Update Out Tomorrow

Our next major system software update for PS4, version 3.50 (codenamed MUSASHI), is out tomorrow!

While we outlined some of the features last month before our beta program started, we wanted to give a more detailed look at the update and share some new info. We’re making it easier to play together with friends, adding the ability to appear offline, and more.

New Social Features

Appear Offline

PS4 System Software 3.50 - Appear Offline

On your Profile tab, we’ve added a new option called ‘Online Status.’ From here, you can choose to ‘Appear Offline.’ This could be useful if you want to play games or watch movies without your friends knowing you’re online. You can designate if you would like to appear offline when you log-in or at any time from your Profile, or by holding down the PS Button on DualShock 4 to bring up the Quick Menu.

Friend Online Notification

Now you can choose to get notified when your friends come online. To receive notifications, select a player on your friends list, press Options, and select ‘Notify When Online.’

User Scheduled Event

On the Events tab, we’re adding the ability to schedule gameplay sessions with your friends. Just select ‘Create Event,’ and you’ll be able to make an invitation for an upcoming gameplay session. Choose the day, time, game, and send it off to your friends. When your event starts, users who registered will automatically be added to a party so you can start playing right away.

You can also share an event to a group, or a community that you’re a member of. Once shared, the event will be sent as a message, or posted to a community wall, and members can register from there

Play Together

This feature allows all members of a Party to see what each person is playing so that you can easily join a friend’s game, or start a new game together.

Other New System Features

Remote Play (PC/Mac)

PS4 System Software 3.50 - Remote Play PC

With this update, we’re expanding PS4’s Remote Play capabilities to work with Windows PC and Mac.
Remote Play on PC / Mac is compatible with the following system software:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10 or later
  • OS X 10.10
  • OS X 10.11

You’ll be able to select from the following resolution and frame rate options, depending on your Internet bandwidth.

  • Resolution options: 360p, 540p, 720p (Default: 540p)
  • Frame rate : Standard (30fps), High (60fps) (Default: Standard)

You can use one DualShock 4 as the controller for Remote Play, which needs to be connected to your PC / Mac via a USB cable.

After the system software update launches, you’ll be able to download the Remote Play Installer here.

Along with PS4’s 3.50 system software update, PlayStation App version 3.50 is out tomorrow as well. The main new features of this update are as follows:

  • User Scheduled Event
    • Users can schedule gameplay sessions with friends
  • Dailymotion has been added to Live from PlayStation
  • Other players’ shared activities appear in your activities

That’s a look at some of the big additions in this update. Of course, there are lots of other refinements and improvements to the system software overall.

Let us know what you think in the comments. As always, we’re listening and appreciate the feedback!

  • Looks like a fantastic update!

  • Does Remote Play on PC/Mac support streaming via Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi? It would be much stabler that way.

    • It will not be limited to WI-FI. And it will also work over internet, like the remote play from Vita/Android does.

    • Reply to Lionel_Redstar: That’s good news, I constantly suffered from disconnection when I used Vita to do remote play via Wi-Fi (either direct or through router). If only PS4 could support IEEE 802.11 ac.

  • Can you use mouse and keyboard with remote play when using a PC?

  • ALL THIS STUFF IS USELESS, BRING NAME CHANGES TO PSN PLEASE

    • How’s is it useless when everyone been asking for most those features ? only useless thing is Psn name change and it ain’t ever happening

    • You should have just made a PSN name you wanted to stick with.

  • We need dts, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD support for the Media Player App. WAV and FLAC support would also be useful. More detailed info on videos during playback when triangle is pressed, like realtime video bitrate, realtime audio bitrate, format, channels being processed ect…the PS3 supported AVCHD Folder structures this was very useful, the PS4 does not currently support it and it’s a major step backwards, I would like to see this capability added to the PS4. These features are essential for gamers who also want to use their PS4 as the center / hub of their entertainment setup.

    • There’s supposed to be a proper media player in the works. The current garbage was a quick-fix stop-gap to quiet a few vocal moaners. Or Sony’s people were just full of it when responding to the many complaints. Time will tell. It would be a billion times easy just to port something like Kodi, though, shame Sony suffer with NIH syndrome.

We certainly don’t need DTS, and MA/HD audio support, we need full audio pass-through to let the amp/receiver do it’s job with the raw data.

  • That remote play sounds very interesting. Nice to have real functionality added rather than more social media crud.

  • No 1080?? Probably because it’s upscaled

    • PS4 capture card can’t handle resolution higher than 720p

    • … then why do games run in 1080….

    • The capture card it not what displays the image on the screen when you are playing. It records what you are seeing so that you can view it later. It is what makes the share functions possible, like live streaming directly from the PS4 or using sharefactory. If you want 1080p video capture, get a better capture card.

  • Does PC remote play allow direct connection between the PC and the PS4 like it does with the Vita? Or is it wi-fi only?

  • “You can use one DualShock 4 as the controller for Remote Play, which needs to be connected to your PC / Mac via a USB cable.” does this mean we HAVE to use a DS4?

  • Still no username change feature? Simply put that’s one thing Xbox one has over you. Not like someone is going to change their name all the time to troll people. Can always make it $5 to change it .

    • Forget it. It’s not coming. Sony’s DB “pros” screwed up elementary database design and used the name as a primary key. There’s no way back now, not without massive reengineering of their data base, APIs, and all systems that hook into the accounts.

Technically it’s easy to address with one extra table and perhaps another for historic changes, but the knock on effect is huge.

    • @moog: Haha, wow… citation needed… but if there’s any ring of truth to that, it’s hilarious.

In any case, it shouldn’t be difficult (albeit time consuming) to get the ball rolling and add a new field for DisplayName. Assuming their APIs aren’t thoroughly kerfuffled, they should be able to update and account for a new version that supports the new field. Sure, old software would have to be updated and/or would still show your ID rather than DisplayName… but then Sony’s putting the ball in the devs’ court to update their software.

Certainly not suggesting it’d be a quick and easy process, but it’s pretty clearly a desired feature. Judging by the number of “I’d pay for this” comments that always show up, the users are willing to foot the bill if Sony’s willing to make it happen.

  • Did they fix the PlaystationNOW not launching bug? If not, that’s annoying.

  • Oh yeah!!!
Appears offline is all what I wanted since forever!!! THANK YOU SONY! :)

  • RinoRichardCroft

Seriously? no 1080p or 4K upscaling?

  • Sony still made laptops??

  • Are you guys going to do anything about the download speeds?

  • PC Remote Play is a big plus! Thanks for the update! :D

  • Why haven’t we been able to change our names when we want? Have the coders not figured that out yet?

  • I’ve been waiting for this upgrade long time ago Finally they answered our prayers :)

  • A quality update.
    Thank you Sony.

  • SONY ARE YOU THE BEST :D <3 LOVEEE IT

  • File Manager for music, photos, video, like ps3…frustrating now!!-_-

  • MORE social features? Every update is social features. I really dont care about that. Why not let me install CUSTOM THEMES? The available themes are awful! How can you charge money for that garbage?

  • Will remote play allow me to play games on my PC monitor but also allow someone else in the house to use the ps4 to say watch Netflix…?

  • Will PS Vue be supported for Remote Play? I can’t justify the subscription if my wife and I can’t watch it on our laptops.

  • Ability to change PSN I’d please

  • Can’t wait :)

  • Really happy you guys/gals didn’t leave out Mac for some Remote Play LOVE

  • Please make a PlayStation app for windows 10 mobile!

  • Will it work with ios 10.11,3??

  • No windows 7 support? Seriously?

  • Are u going to add gamer tag changing ever

  • I don’t like this update
Once again Playstation you let me down
All I want is the ability to use an external hard drive without replacing t
Is that too much to ask for
Just a software patch that allows that

  • Hello I have a remote play question. We have 2 PC’s in the house. Can you set up remote play on 1 PC to be user 1 (me) and the 2nd PC to be user 2 (my brother)?

just so you can have differen users remote play on different PCs
    not simuntaniously ofcourse

  • “You can use one DualShock 4 as the controller for Remote Play, which needs to be connected to your PC / Mac via a USB cable.”

Does this mean that I have to use a DualShock 4 or are there other compatible controllers? I ask because I already have a nice PC controller I keep at work for those slow times so if I don’t have to bring my DS4 back and forth from work, that’d be great.

Other than that, I’m excited for the full update! Having participated in the beta I have to say, everything works perfectly and I love the new features, especially scheduled playtimes.

    • Whoa, wait. A previous commenter pointed it out and I didn’t catch it in the original article. Remote play won’t work for Windows 7? What the hell, 8.1 and 10 are both terrible. Looks like I won’t be able to enjoy my PS4 from work with my PC… I could always use my Vita but god knows both connections need to be 150mb/s+ for it to even be stable (I have that at home but work is around 50mb/s…sadness ensued)

  • Finally! Appear offline is just what I need. c:

  • great stuff! really hope to one day see the ability to hide purchased games from your library, there’s just too much stuff there and I have always had some apps show up there when I’ve just chosen to show “Games” so I can find games I’ve downloaded but not yet played. :)

  • Support for external hard drives… where?

The Wii U can do it.

    The Wii U.

    smh

  • StrangeMunch1991

In the next update all folders like there was on the ps3 to make browsing games and apps easier. Other than that great update being able to remote play to my pc is aweome. Also next update my computer has bluetooth i know it be a hard feat, but it be nice to wirelessly connect my controller for the software. Great job sony.

  • This is exciting!

  • StrangeMunch1991

Oh one more thing even tho i dont see a possibility being able to plug a external hard drive to install games on and run from be nice, but i got a 1tb drive soon to upgrade to a 2tb so im still happy. I pay $90 a drive and as i upgrade i swap the old drive to my ps3

    • This is why I love the Xbox One. You can use a NTFS formatted external HDD to install games on up to 5TB. WIth the USB 3.0 connection (something else the PS4 doesn’t have), it sometimes loads games faster than the internal drive!

  • MentalAsylum-182

The Download link is not working. could you fix it?

  • when will a remote-play version be released for android on the play store (not just selected sony devices)

    • Never, it’s a benefit from buying their phones. If you want the feature on a mobile device buy their phone.

  • Apear offline feature is awsome……!!!!!!
Also should be able to select that to whom we want to apear offline and to whom not…!!

  • Great new firmware!
My Wishes and improvements for next PS4 firmware

    • Auto-sync of trophies in background
    • Background wallpaper for PS4 Menu (downloadable + from USB-device)
    • Capture videos in 1080p and 60 frames per second (1080p has priority)
    • Copy multiple links and quotes from websites and messages like we know it from PS3
    • Copy music (MP3, AAC, ATRAC etc.) on PS4’s hard drive
    • Copy photos from USB flash drive on PS4
    • Different sound if someone joins a party (there was actually a different jingle before 2.0)
    • Folders to sort games and demos
    • Notification if a friend starts broadcasting gameplay via Twitch/uStream
    • Option to delete only game’s install file, so you can keep update file (would save many time if you want to play a game months later).
    • Playback of Audio-CD
    • PlayStation Store: Add a wish list.

    Part 1…

    • Wishful thinking and nothing more!

Sony will never even consider half of the things you mentioned since they like restricting functionality and locking down features, only allowing the ones that they feel you should want! Control is what they’re good at and they’re not relinquishing it again in this generation of gaming. They made that “mistake” in the last gen giving us Linux and then taking it away.

  • Part 2

    • Save some messages like we know it from PS3 or at least 500 (not 200 as currently)
    • Send several pictures at once in a message. This also should be possible for uploads on Twitter, Flickr.
    • Screenshot Upload to Flickr
    • Screenshots Not sorted as a list where you have to scroll up and down but multiple screenshots displayed side by side (e.g. 5), so it’s easier to navigate and you see a little photo of them.
    • Screenshots: Zoom-in/zoom-out with right Analog Stick in pictures
    • Support for Sony Bluetooth Headsets from PS3 (those with only a microphone)
    • Video chat on PS4
    • View trophies even when you are offline (it worked fine on PS3)

Thanks for reading, dear team from PlayStation :)

  • i’m going to love remote play for pc/mac its a big change in how a PS4 and PC will act together.

  • Any idea what time the update goes live? (GMT)

  • Do our PCs have to have certain specs to do this? Like the RAM and Ghz and whatnot? Or does that not mater since it’s streaming a video feed?

I also wonder if I’ll be able to PS4 games on my PC this way… hrrrmmm…

  • I <3 You Playstation.

  • remote play! thank you, Sony! :X :X :X :X
