New Alienation Details: Upgrade and Loot Systems Revealed

Hi there, Tommaso from Housemarque speaking. It’s about time we shed some light on a few aspects of Alienation that have been shrouded in mystery up to now. Today’s the day we take a look at what we call Alienation’s metagame!

Two things that set our latest effort apart from the previous games we made are the loot system and the way weapons work. For those of you familiar with Dead Nation, this is quite a departure. In our zombie shooter, players could buy and upgrade a specific set of weapons between stages. In Alienation, weapons and loot are either found in boxes or dropped by enemies after they’ve been killed. This means that when you proceed with missions, you’ll have the chance to obtain rarer weapons or upgrade your weapons’ stats to match your playstyle.

I’ll give you some numbers (we all like numbers, right?): The game features four different types of Alien Cores, each upgradable up to five times and activating a different effect when set in one of the weapon slots. For example, Red Cores augment damage, while Yellow Cores modify the clip size of the weapon. Carefully planning where to put the Cores you collect during missions is a vital part of progressing in Alienation, as specific combinations can even add additional bonuses.

On top of that, loot includes metals of different rarities from “Stock” to “Legendary.” Collecting these metals allow you to “reroll” some stats of the weapon you use them on, improving your chances for the next shooting session.

Alienation: Powershot

Last but not least, some weapons enjoy special perks, activated when Cores are mounted in a specific pattern. For example, these perks can add the chance of a lightning chain between enemies when bullets hit them and certain conditions are met.

The idea behind all this is to get players to invest in their weapons of choice and carefully plan their arsenal before jumping into the fight — we feel that the system adds a lot of replayability and believe you will love it. Can’t wait to play this. Housemarque has always delivered

Cannot freaking wait, I loved the gameplay at PSX. Any DLC plans similar to Resogun?

    Really excited for this!

  • I’m ready! What an incredible month! First Ratchet & Clank (IMO, PS4’s best exclusive to date), and then Alienation, which is bound to be incredible!

  • Incredible work, Housemarque. My favorite developer next to Guerrilla and Naughty Dog!

  • This might have just sold me on the game. I played a lot of Dead Nation, and while enjoyable as a pure action shooter game, I always thought the “upgrades” weren’t really helpful. Upon watching the trailer for this game, I made the assumption that it was the same thing with a different coat of paint.

So yeah, if there’s really some progression to the game, and not just shooting things for a high score, I may have to check it out after all.

  • April truly is the month of awesome weapons… Ratchet and Clank and Alienation? Awesome.

I already preorder this 2 weeks ago. This game is going to be awesome !!

  • I’m liking the implementation of different classes, but I haven’t seen any indication anywhere that you can switch between classes after starting. Are you really locked into a certain class once you pick one, or is it restricted to a certain playthrough? I would really like to be able to play as all three of the classes, depending on my mood. Can anyone shed light on this?

  • April 26 2016 also sees the release of Zen Pinball’s Aliens vs. Pinball! Epic day to be a Pkaystation fan!

  • THIS IS PLAYSTATION!

So happy the day is finally here, great job HM!

Can’t wait!!! when is it coming out?

Also is this confirmed to be 1080p @ 60 fps?

Damn first enter the Gungeon smokes Nuclear Throne which I loved and now this looks to totally 1up Helldivers.

  • I’d like to try a demo of this game first before potentially wasting money on a game that I may wind up not liking..

It looks good – but so did Helldivers which I wound up not liking, unfortunately.

Another thing to consider for us PS Plus members: why should we pre-order or buy this game if a few months later we might get it for free as part of PS Plus?

This happened to me with Helldivers. I bought the game a few weeks after it released & then a few months later it was made free for PS Plus members.

You should preorder it if you feel the company has a business model you can endorse, a proven track record and if the game is something you believe you’ll enjoy. This game may never be free for PS+ so I wouldn’t make my purchasing descision based on that. BTW, Helldivers wasn’t free “a few months later” after release. It released on March 3rd 2015 and was made free in Feb 2016. It was made free almost a year later and definately not a few months later as you said.

  • Been waiting for Alienation since first time I saw it… so close now.

  • Loved all the Housemarque games. Day one for me.

  • Housemarque games are a safe purchase day one for me. They never disappoint.
