Ghost Recon Wildlands: Capturing the Diversity of Bolivia

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is the first military shooter set in a massive and responsive open world. In our new “We are Ghosts” trailer, we get a peek into Ubisoft’s largest action-adventure open world. From the infamous Death Road to the iconic salt flat, you will journey through the gritty, expansive, and vibrant backdrop of Bolivia as you fight to take down the Santa Blanca cartel.

Ghost Recon Wildlands

Authenticity is an important component of Ghost Recon Wildlands that not only extends to the Ghosts and their gear, but also to the world. Because of where it’s situated in South America, Bolivia offers a combination of extreme climates and topography that you simply won’t find in a lot of other places, which is part of what makes it an ideal setting for our game, but also a challenging one to build. For the team to truly understand Bolivia’s ecological diversity and faithfully recreate it for Wildlands, it was important for us to experience it in person, so we took a trip.

Our goal was to ensure the world we built captured the essence of Bolivia and we returned to the studio with a better understanding of Bolivia’s environmental extremes and how people endure them. At 2.5 miles high on the Altiplano, the sun can burn the front of your body while the cold freezes your back. Meanwhile, down in the jungle, you have to contest with the crushing humidity and a constant barrage of mosquitos. Bolivian winters can be just as intense. Freezing temperatures and fog are your primary concerns.

It’s an unquestionably harsh place, but also a very beautiful one. Our team took hundreds of photos and recorded as much video as possible to capture a variety of landscapes, such as Laguna Colorada, a “cementerio de trenes” (train graveyard), and the famous Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat – just to name a few. The new “We Are Ghosts” trailer will give you a small taste of how we’ve recreated some of these specific places in Ghost Recon Wildlands, but we put a lot of effort into making sure that every in-game location provided different opportunities for gamers to use the environment in their strategies. These diverse environments in our living, reactive open-world environment mean each individual choice you make has far reaching consequences.

  • Need gameplay shown. Pictures do not get me excited anymore.

  • I’m glad to hear any news regarding this game, two of my friends and myself are excited for a co-op modern shooter that’s not focused around pvp. Just won’t get a pre-order from myself after the on going division disaster. Only possible way I’d pre order this is if I got to play a early access to see how it plays.

I don’t get the problem people are having with The Division. It is all in opinion, but The Division to me is one of the better games Ubisoft has done in years. Hate Rainbow Six Siege and Far Cry Primal is very meh

    • Squadren_64

Because it’s a terrible, terrible game.

    • Couldn’t disagree more. The Division is one of my favorite games this year. I can only hope that Ghost Recon is half as good as The Division.

  • Great! can’t wait to hear more information about this game at E3. I might pre order this game based on what being showed at E3

  • Release date?
    Gameplay at E3?

  • I can tell a lot about a game from just screenshots. I guess that comes from knowing what to look for after years of horrible games. This game will be good. As long as they nail the online.

  • ‘In our new “We are Ghosts” trailer, we get a peek into Ubisoft’s largest action-adventure open world.’

What trailer? I have to admit, normally I wouldn’t care but I really want to travel to Bolivia, so you got my attention.

  • Sounds awesome! I only hope they represent the society a little better than in future soldier, in which it looked more like a mexican town in the day of the deceased than a bolivian one.
I’m gonna be looking forward for more news about this game

  • Been following this game since it was revealed, theyve been making it for about 6 years, so the graphics arent lying, its 4 player drop in drop out game play, you can do missions any way you want in a big open world

  • ExtremeGamer

Why did the preorder price go back up? When it was listed earlier it was 13% off and 27% off the gold versions for preorder. Now they are regular price again.

  • Chazz-Rabble

I’m so excited for this game! The concept is so rad. Bring it on!

  • It’s good to know that Bolivia is getting represented (since my parents are from Bolivia and I’ve been there.) any information on what cities we’ll be able to visit in Bolivia?

  • talonkard044

Take The Division, put it in bowl and add open-world and “play how you want” elements from Metal Gear Solid V, some action from Far Cry and then cover and let cool for 20 mins. Once cool, add a dash of Just Cause and bake until Spring of 2017.

    Yeah, my body is ready.

  • Yay! Here come the redneck white heroes to fight the evil brown skinned druglords. Does this game also show all the caucasiens in the US and Europe snorting all that good Bolivian blow? lol I hate the PC culture that’s popped up recently but this is BS and insulting.

  • Hi there! I’m bolivian; with regards to realism of this representation, I can say that the natural landscapes do look like the real thing. Those rural towns seem 100% mexican though, nobody here knows or worships santa muerte for example lol. But it’s fiction and I take it as that. Now, if you like nature you should come and do some sightseeing, google “Salar de Uyuni” and that’s the tip of the iceberg with regards to touristic attractions. Regards.

Looks pretty good! I’ll pick it up once There’s 100% confirmation that There’s NO Always ONLINE required even for single player for the game to work.

Always ONLINE = Game with Expiration date.

These types of Games with expiration dates, my wallet tend to dismiss them with extreme prejudice 100% of the time:)

  • Been waiting for news on this game.I don’t follow gaming news as I used to so I didn’t even know there were new trailers released. The pics look really nice and even impressive…looking forward to it and I hope to see a cool gameplay on E3.
