No Man’s Sky Coming to PS4 in August

No Man’s Sky

Hello, Sean Murray from Hello Games here, working extremely hard on our game, No Man’s Sky.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit an play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

However, as we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special.

After a short delay, No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on August 9, in Europe August 10, and in the UK August 12.

Diplo on No Man’s SkyCreature on No Man’s Sky

We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right.

The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn’t been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation.

And despite all of that, development is genuinely going well. This is the hardest working, most talented team I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing. For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.

To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of No Man’s Sky years ago, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay.

Thank you so much,
Sean

  • Don’t worry. We’re sure the game will be good. I take quality over a rushed game any day sir.

    • Thanks for the info Sean, but the team should also change the release date on the company’s website that still says June. It’s a rumor that has been going for 2-3 days, and even now that it’s confirmed the date hasn’t change. It’s wrong.

To all the little kids whining about being cancelling their preorders, you should check your terms of agreement which clearly state that the release dates are subject to change. When you preorder something, it means you’re willing to wait for several months for it. If you can’t wait for 2 more months for a finished game, no one is going to miss you.

  • Polish is important! Still the most anticipated game of my lifetime! August 9 it is!

  • Cheer up Sean, take as long as you need, we want a great game on its due time, not an incomplete game now.

  • Everyone needs to settle down! Yeah we have to wait a little longer. We could live in a world where this game doesn’t exist at all. Patience. Take some time to think about your game play.

  • Thanks for the update, Sean. Obviously the wait is hard, but do right by your own standards. On a personal note this works out better for me personally in terms of time available to play. Can’t wait for August!

  • Hope i live when the game realese and this its not like the New zelda that beeing delayed and then delayed and so on……..

  • My wallet thanks you. June’s stacked right now. August just seems like a better time. And if it means more stability at launch, then I can totally wait.

  • Congrats, HG, you just lost a customer. Not all gamers have all the time in the world, especially not for waiting another platform’s owner to give the A-OK. Delay the PS version until the VR if you want to, but I preordered it just a week ago for PC in the knowledge that I’ll only have time in june and july to play. I expect more professionalism than this.

    • Uh you do realize it’s delayed on PC as well right? It isn’t coming in June to PC lol.

    • Chrisiznotonfire

dude, are you kidding me? Smh really hard right now.

    • I KNOW it’s probably delayed on PC, and I’m angry because an august release is not what I shelled out 60€ (almost 70$) for, since I won’t have time to play then. I preordered a game to be released in 1 month, expecting any professional developer to not change things so close to launch.

  • I’ve been waiting 3 years. A month a half more is nothing. I want a polished game. I don’t know if I’ve ever been this excited for a game ever and i’ve played many many games

  • Thanks for the info and keep up the great work! Looking forward to playing!

  • Random_Cosmonaut

I’m still pumped, if not a little disappointed. I believe in you guys though, and I’m excited to explore the universe you are creating. Now I guess I have to go outside this summer, huh?

  • I am super disappointed by this news and I really hope the delay has nothing to do with the new virtual reality system coming to PS4! I stopped playing PS4 games a few weeks ago and was only waiting for NMS to be released; it was going to be my summer chill game, huge letdown news. Another boring PS4 summer for gaming. Wouldn’t it be cool if a new game was released before the release date to pleasantly surprise fans…

  • Once again a false promise by a developer I’m tired of delays in games if you weren’t 100% sure of a date you shouldn’t have said a word of the 21st of June.

  • Delays are never fun, especially when it’s the game you’ve looked forward to more than any other game in your life, and it was less than a month away. But yes I am still looking forward to it when it is released. Btw, I assume it’s also delayed for PC, but the article only mentions PS4. Can anyone confirm? Also, if it’s being delayed so it can also release on Xbox people will be raging since I saw a poll where hundreds of Xbox owners bought a PS4 just for this game.

  • I always prefer developers delay and release more polished product when they feel it is as good as it should be for day 1 consumers than to release early with plans of patching later.

In terms of waiting, I still wait patiently for The Last Guardian to be ready for me to play it, so the extra 1-2 months wait for No Man’s Sky is no big deal at all :)

  • Tldr; games done. We’re having a blast playing it. You can’t have it. Screw you. Delayed.

  • Can you just release Balari V? I’m ok with just wandering aimlessly in the cold for 2 more months just so i can die to read Jaden Smith quotes. No really, please let me do this.

    • Chrisiznotonfire

That would be extremely awesome if he released a “demo” version, in which we could just explore a planet, but not be able to go into space. That would satisfy a lot of people

    • If you are releasing a planet, you may as well release the dinosaur planet from VGX.

  • As everyoneeded in the world sighs in sadness, that Jason guy from that website sits with a smug look and says “I told you so”, thus making everyone only hate him more.

  • yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

  • I find it funny how people are always complaining about delays in this day and age. Do you guys really want a rushed game? Maybe ND should’ve rushed out Uncharted 4 so you can complain about that game being rushed or broken.

Sean take all the time you need. If you feel it’s ready then release it. The people that are REALLY looking forward to this game will stand by you and not whine about another delay.

  • Very disappointing. Even as a college student who bought this game with my own money etc, putting this in August basically kills my plan of playing it over the summer, and having any really worthwhile games to buy this summer.

  • Wow, I think I want my pre-order money back.

  • Sean (and the entire Hello Games crew), NO apology is necessary first of all. I’ll echo what (thankfully) most of the people have said on here. It is a credit to your entire team how much you care about your fans. It seems counterintuitive to point out how much you care considering the news you are sharing, but it just proves how much Hello Games DOES care, to want to have the best possible experience for your fans. As others have said, take what time you need to make this game as outstanding as we all know it is going to be! I hope those of us who are supporting you will continue to encourage you, that you are doing the right thing. Best wishes from Canada!!

    • I’m 50/50 on what you sayed. I like a polished game but they need to balance out the negatives with some positives. Delaying the game less than 4 weeks of release and extended it to a wait of 11 weeks, causing people to feel screwed over because they trusted this game to release during a set time and took off work and skipped special events to take part in the launch of a special event that is now been dragged forward to a time completely unrelated to what we expected. I want loads of new footage, demos, pics, music releases.
#FirstWorldProblems rant over. I guess all have to socialize with humans face to face in the summer

  • A true word is priceless

Always good to do what’s best for team

It’s like Guinness or Heaven – ‘Good things come…’

  • Disappointed, sure. But I’m fine with it being delayed. I don’t feel the hate and rage and distrust that some are feeling. It’s still going to be a day one purchase for me. Maybe I can snag one of the limited editions *coughmakemoreavailablecough* :)

  • I Sean I like to apologize on behalf the community that they did not do more to tell you guys were one the worst advertisers in gaming History.

Sure delays happen I don’t care if the game did not come out till 2017 at the time you were showing NMS… But instead you talked how it’s not ready there is not much to show and also how you don’t want to show too much and spoil us…

Then you did IGN….. Spoiled the Hell out of us all…

Then you announced Next Year release date….

Then you did IGN again…. Spoiled us even more….

    Then you Delayed it again…

My issues not your talents at programming or making a video game. My issues not delays. My issues the way you advertise the hell out of it spoil us with content and then tear it from our hearts again.

I’m sorry that more the community has not stood up and shared this thought with you more. Rather they are kissing the ground you walk on.

I don’t normally make such comments but I feel like you need to know what you did badly in NMS before all you hear is praises because what you do before the game release is just as important when the game finally releases.

    • We all feel a little slighted but, a good game will heal all wounds and everyone knows it. No one remembers the delay they only remember the game.

  • Very moving speech. It almost made me cry.I’ll be honest. When I first heard of this delay and figured out it was actually happening I was furious. Well actually I was beyond furious. I was pretty much ready to rip Sean Murray’s beard off of his chinny-chin-chin. But I cooled down after a bit and gathered my thoughts. Then I thought to myself “I guess 2 months isn’t that long”. The point of what I’m trying to get at is that I am still looking forward to what I’m sure will win Game Of The Year, No Man’s Sky. Thank you Hello Games for telling something rather than leaving us in the dark.

    Sincerely, a big fan.
P.S. I was just kidding about ripping your beard off Sean. I was just mad at the time. Please don’t ban me from NMS.

  • I hope something is VERY wrong with this game atm and not a ploy for PSVR,

    • This.
Personally I hope (just hope, not based on any info) that they’re adding some more very basic multiplayer elements. Not crazy PVP, but maybe just being able to drop some resources / fuel for another player in the unlikely chance you come across one.

  • If you need to get be game alot better than it is .that’s no problem I can wait

  • I wouldn’t have been able to purchase it right away in June, because, you know, life, but I may be able to gather enough funds to purchase this by August.
Regardless, I am in the camp that believes that taking your time, and releasing a game when it’s actually done is better than releasing it by a deadline and having to clean up bugs, which would tarnish the reputation of the game more than a few weeks delay will. By far. A delay is the best choice, as difficult of a decision as it was to make.

  • While I agree with the fact thatit needs to be a finished product, and take all the time you need. My disappointment stems from the fact that you’ve been promising from the beginning that you would not announce a release date before it was finished for fear of disappointing fans. Now that SONY is on board you have fallen into thier normal “we are gonna announce a game then push it back ten times before you really see it” routine. I haven’t listened to any of the hype or bad press over the years because I believed in this game and all you are trying to accomplish. I still do. But it is incredably disappointing that this close to a date I have been waiting on forever, and it gets pushed back two months. Now instead of something special, it just seems like every other game. I’m still holding on, and still think it should be perfect before it’s actually released. But I do have to say, that all of the magic and sparkle I had about it, has all but gone. I have had to look at a count down timer for a few weeks now, excited every day, and counting every day, now it’s just a game.

    • SAME with the counting timer! My phone having a big “25” on it had me excited this morning, now seeing “74” leaves me with nothing but disappointment and concern. Hopefully I can be hyped again by the time it’s down to 10 or so…

  • Some of us bought the game already what now we just look and Waite? Wow ok

  • if this is just for vr support you guys could have just patched that in later….polish is for patches. On the other hand if its a game breaking problem then by all means delay.

at least you guys aren’t springing this days before release.

I just hope this game lives up to the hype. I REALLY REALLY hope it does…..at least I can play Witcher 3’s dlc in june…..

  • Sean, I remember you saying that the release date would be somewhere around 2015, then you said that you guys were cautious setting a specific release date in order to be true and not disappoint. And when you finally, after all these years I’ve been waiting, you set a date for June 21st 2016. By your own words you convinced me that the the release date was the actual release date. I’ve been checking your twitter account, website, your interviews, various youtube channels and watched gameplay for hours on end, counting down the days until I finally could get my hands on this game, I’ve even been dreaming about it. Frequently. I’m already obsessed with this game and I didn’t even play it yet! I PERFECTLY understand that a game of this scale and ambition is hard to perfect and to get it just right, especially when you’re a small team, and I know that any delay is for the better. I just want you to know that this is becoming actual torture for me and I could never expect to feel that much of disappointment and desperation for a video game. I know you guys have been working so hard and the delay was inevitable, I’m just saying that I was so so so sure that you actually meant it when you said June 21st. :'(

  • KuKurakusuKuran

i just hope that it got delayed even more longer like 2020 maybe. the dev eat his own words by stating would never announce the release date before the game is ready… ready my ass.

  • Keep it going, i’ll be patiently waiting :)

  • About time Sean manned up and said something about the rumours that have been circulating for the past few days.
Seriously, F this and F Hello Games. Delay after delay after delay, then finally an official pre-order option with the support of Playstation Network. Then we spend a month salivating while sean rides the hype train at IGN promoting the crap out of it.
Sean Murray asks for “a couple weeks” that ends up being a month and a half. The new time-frame puts this at the end of everyones summer vacation instead of the begining. This eats another month and a half my yearly playstation network access. I scheduled a solid week off work to be able to play this game, this game being the only “vacation” I could afford this year. Those days can’t be changed and now I have to waste them, more-over I won’t get time to play the game when it finally does come out.

    • Playstation and hello games took my money March 4 with a promise of a game June 21st. They don’t produce, so I’ve been on hold with playstaion for the past 30 minutes and now I have to submit a request for refund, that can be denied, and I won’t know for 3-5 business days! Anyone else up for a new group called NMS-Class-Action-Lawsuit for refunds?
I’m ashamed to have talked this game up to my friends; to have convinced them to have spent money on pre-orders.
I’m sorry, but enough is enough. I’ve lost the faith. The internet said never do pre-orders, but I told everyone they were wrong, that this company would see this through, especially with IGN and Playstation support. This will be the last pre-order I ever do.

    • We all feel your pain if it’s any consolation.

    • There is a way to cancel a preorder.

See my comment numbered 212 on how to do this.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

“I won’t get time to play the game when it finally does come out.”
Damb, how many hours do you work? Just play the game before/after you get home and on your off days.

    • Man i feel the same feeling. Pre order is for idiots

  • A Sony-published PS4 game gets delayed. SHOCKER!!

  • Have to say that sucks but u have us by the balls and our money not much we can do but bend over and take it wouldnt be so disappointing if i hadnt already prepaid for two f@&$*&! Copys im calling the catfish show ive been catfished by sean lol im still geting it ill get ovr it when my ass heals

  • XxSolo-GeneralxX

This is sad news but I’d rather wait for for a wonderfully detailed experience then the half game dlc garbage that’s been happening lately by other studios. This will aggrivate the main population but take the time to do it right. I commend you Sean for speaking for yourself and bringing your vast thought to be impossible massive game to life. Especially with the small team you hav . May no mans sky change the world and be the first to take these great leaps! I’ll be here waitin . On a side note I hadn’t finished paying it off so that’s some pressure lifted off my wallet haha.

  • It isn’t a huge deal. I can definitely understand the delay. You have a huge project, with such a small team. It’s absolutely amazing what you’ve been able to do. It is a little disappointing, but it’s also very exciting, because it shows just how much you care about what you’re doing, and I love that. There are a lot of companies that just spit out games every year, that don’t even care if the game is good. You’re taking the extra time to make sure that it is done right, and I really appreciate that. So thank you so much. I love everything you’ve done. Keep up the amazing work.

  • No worries, dude. Better than a rushed product. It’s the second game I have pre-ordered ever and the delay changes nothing. I love what you are aiming to do and I’d rather have it better delivered six weeks later than rushed out the door.

  • BriBrainBlender

We are closer now than we will ever be once we’re inside the game.

  • Of course it’s slightly disappointing, but I’d rather you take the time to deliver the best you think you can. Hopefully the end result will quickly evaporate all the sad faces floating about right now ;)

  • Also, dammit–now I have to reschedule my ‘vacation’!

  • Hey for a small team it’s understandable, I’m just patiently waiting for a great game, if that means waiting 2 more months, im good with it.

  • I bought a PS4 for this game alone. I get the PS4 home, plug it in, preorder No Man’s Sky and then literally 2 hours later it gets delayed 2 months. Thanks Sony/Hello Games, enjoy my $460.

    • Congrats on the purchase of your PlayStation 4! Don’t let a small delay get you down. That money you spent will now deliver better content than you even expected since they’re going to be working on it longer. Now you’ve got a bit more time to explore the amazing world of PlayStation while waiting for the main reason that got u to get it. DOOM, Uncharted, Dark Souls, these are all recently released games and they are all AMAZING. Do yourslef a favor and pick up one of these to test drive your console while waiting for the main attraction.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

You gave Hello Games $460? What the…?

  • What more could you possibly need to do to the game that can’t be accomplished in a patch in two months time?

…you aren’t telling us there are any flaws or bugs …you are delaying merely for “polish”?

…this game could take forever to polish!!

Get it out there! THEN POLISH!

It doesn’t have to be “perfect” on day one …perfection is a never ending infinite process towards an impossible goal.

    • PS VR

    • Sean Murray already said he was a perfectionist in one of his interviews. This is his game. His creation. His universe. The game will be complete when he feels it is complete. I want to play a game the developer feels proud of, not something he feels was rushed. It’s hard enough developing a game as is, especially one like this. It’s even harder to resist the pressure to succumb to the hype of this game and release an unfinished product. Even though it was a tough decision, I believe it was the right one.

  • In my experience from life, when someone says ” give me another moment plz, I want to make sure I got everything right” I patiently wait and enjoy the experience or service said person is preparing when it’s ready. Ever had a meal undercooked? Didn’t taste quite like you expected I imagine. Good things come in time, and greater things come with patience and understanding. Do your thing Hello Games. People get upset for having to wait for anything here in the states because everything is streamlined for their convenience. So if it’s not on “time” it’s not worth their time.I mean, people suck up unfinished AAA titles like nectar here. Then complain about it. So, yeah. Don’t be EA. Be Hello Games. You guys deserve the pay off for your hard work anyway. Hell, the witcher 3 was delayed by 4 months to polish and refine and I’d say it payed off for them by delivering a quality finished product for consumers. So take your time and put your heart into it. Best wishes to you. PS. Might this free up more limited editions for production? Cause I’d love to snag one to support you guys. If not, aye, their limited ;)

    • Pss. Ignore the entitled people. Some people are just like that with everything they do. It’s crazy.

  • I am fine waiting because I want the game to be done when it’s released, and I don’t doubt the effort of the team at all. But it looks bad when you hold out on giving even the slightest hint as to when the game is coming out for almost two years since announcing the game because “we wanted to be 100% sure we would be able to meet the deadline” then add two months to it a mere 24 days before release. I’m still excited for the game and I do want you to take all the time you need. But this is still very very disappointing.
