No Man’s Sky Coming to PS4 in August

No Man’s Sky

Hello, Sean Murray from Hello Games here, working extremely hard on our game, No Man’s Sky.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit an play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

However, as we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special.

After a short delay, No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on August 9, in Europe August 10, and in the UK August 12.

Diplo on No Man’s SkyCreature on No Man’s Sky

We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right.

The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn’t been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation.

And despite all of that, development is genuinely going well. This is the hardest working, most talented team I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing. For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.

To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of No Man’s Sky years ago, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay.

Thank you so much,
Sean

  • This to me is unexceptable. This game was supposed to come out last year, in the 4th Quarter. Then you make us wait a year, Just to push it back again? Whats next, If its not right, January just to make sure. I am happy at this point I havnt spent money on it. Cause I wont. I am not buying this game no matter how much fun it looks. I am sick of waiting for it. it was 3 weeks away and you couldn’t just patch it. This is unfair to people who Pre ordered, and people who have been waiting years for it. So good luck, I wont be buying it.

    • Dude, they’ve only announced a date once. All those times it was “supposed” to come out was nothing but fan base conjecture.

  • This game is going to be one off my all time favorites, no doubt about it. And im going to spend most of my spare time exploring the universe, which means I won’t get to see summer this year. But with the delay I still get to enjoy a little bit of sunlight, so thank you Sean and the rest of the team.

I still look forward to playing NMS, and I am not gonna hate on you for delaying the game. You have created the game I always wanted to play, and a couple of months delay is nothing compared to the dissapointment of seeing this game fail. So please take your time, and do it right.

Furthermore, I think that you all deserve loads of respect for making the tough decision to delay the game so close to release. And I fully understand that you want this game to get the most attention it can, which is hard right on top of E3. So I think your decision is the right one no matter what. I really hope this game gets all the attention it deserves. And all the success it deserves. I for one will support you all the way.

Thank you so much Hello Games, for making this epic game.

  • Hello, hellogames,
Again I also want to apologise for the immaturity voiced in these comments
for me these days it takes something really special to grab my attention and get me excited, and this game has certainly does this!
like you say was the hype and expecting on your shoulders adds real pressure to a release in a good and bad way,but I can tell that your efforts will really pay of and the end product will be what you expect, not a unpolished games 3 months down the line players complain about……
I can wait!!! It’s not like 5 weeks will have you completing the game any quicker!!!!!!lol
Keep us the amazing work hello games and I for sure will look forward to amazing sci-fi vista’s and adventure :-)

  • 12th for the UK? Nice to see we get stitched up again. A full two days after Europe??? Why?

    • Guess it’s just cos Friday is the traditional uk release day. Just like the US’s is Tuesday.

Just in time for the weekend :)

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Nice to know there’s still ONE good thing about living in America.Looking at you,Obama.

  • Take your time. I’m so happy seeing such passionate dev’s.

  • Delays happen and I’d rather That then what happening with Homefront. Could have been fun but got pushed at too early and have gotten horrible reviews all around. Even the companies they clearly paid with advertising bribes can’t back it up. Don’t be a paid beta release. Release the game when it’s finished. The end result matters more then the homestretch.

  • No worries, Sean – thanks for taking it that extra mile instead of grabbing the money and running :)

    It’s only a couple more weeks :)

    • theoneeyedpoodle

He did grab the money and run.All those pre-orders.On the 21st they’ll have “No Man’s Game”

  • Any chance there will be another run of Limited Editions made? Really looking forward to the game, delays are no problem at all.

  • Look at the reddit community. In the words of Angry Joe “YOU DUNE ****ED IT UP!”
You’ve lost credibility at the abysmal way you’ve handled this delay. One month from launch, no mention, nothing communicated.
And what happened? What happened to not releasing this game until it was complete, not giving us a release date until the game was complete? Did you lie to our faces during winter? Or are you lying now, hiding their are big problems. You say you’re grateful to us, then how about you actually communicate with us instead of this PR nonsense!

  • To all the talented members of the Hello Games thank you for your hard work and passion for this tremendous game. I will pick up this game on day one, ever since this game was showed of some years ago it blew my mind, something this special only comes by every so often. It’s hard to be patient but I feel that for the amount of potential and content this EPIC game will have the wait is to be expected, I would be very disappointed if I were to have something that does not fulfill it’s goals 2 months is not that long compared to all the years we’ve been expecting this to come in to our hands. Thank you for all of your hard work, keep on working to meet your goal, all of you rock!!!

  • Better a good game that comes out later, than a buggy mess that comes out now.

  • Why are UK gamers having to wait longer then everyone else isn’t it about time UK game industry released in the UK first then everywhere else later

  • I will admit that I was sad at first but you should all be happy that they are taking the time to release a good game. that’s all that matters

  • GotheHaynePlane

I can understand that you need to fine tune it. Looking forward to the game alot. I already pre orded the game already, but i noticed on the playstation store USA it has been taken off the store. Is that meant to happen because it has me worried alittle. Though i imagine this is due to the delay and will be put back on the store again soon.

    Good luck and stay positive.

    Patient Gamer

  • LightningZombie

I hope we get a demo or something. I am all for waiting and getting better quality, but yeah.

  • As a eager pre-orderer I say please take your time, I’m happy to wait for polish, and can I also register my extreme interest in VR compatibility, please? The delay suits me too as I’ve just bought the Witcher ;)

  • Not that bothered by the delay but could I get an actual reason why the UK has to wait till the Friday? Considering the delay couldn’t you have done a worldwide release?

  • Ah man that’s too bad, this would’ve been released in the mid-year break of University for me (might I mention the only break we get) and we’re always too busy during the trimester… looks like I’m waiting until the end of the year to properly play it :(( I’m glad you guys are making it the best you can though and I do think you made the right decision here.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Here we go.Another “student” who won’t have time when it gets released.Baby has to do his homework.

  • I understand, your afford to make your game perfect, Sean… But this REALLY screws up my summer… Im a rather poor man (can barely keep the tech working), and only afford to pay 1-2 games this summer. Now i had saved money JUST for your epic game… and transferred it to the wallet so i could play it day 1…

I can survive :) But little faster info had been appreciated. Still gonna buy it, still love to play it.. but.. ruin my game-summer.

So, better be ready then i comes! ;)

  • Hello Sean and thank you for the update. As a programmer my self I totally understand the importance of polishing.
But can we at least get some taste of NMS to ease the wait during the summer? Like for example a demo or beta test?
Thanks for the great work you are doing.

  • As many others have said, I’m willing to wait as long as it takes until you put out the game you intend. It looks incredible, and well worth waiting for.

  • As long as I get my limited edition with an awesome game in it. I can wait for 2 months.
Just Keep it at those two months though :p

  • Rey_de_los_ways

Sorry for my name xD but thats besides the point!

  • Rey_de_los_ways

Three words no prob bro ;)

  • Awesome, I took time off, traded with colleges so I could get off on release.
Now the date is delayed and I wasted my vacation, and there is no way I can change it… Thanks.

  • Just release the game unfinished and patch it later. That’s what everyone else does.

  • Sweeeet can’t wait go hard guys :)

  • Can we get a closed beta for the PS Plus users to test out some areas? We could be your personal bots to check out random far places in the universe. The game has been pushed back, we should get a June 21st till July 10th beta test run to see if stuff is running smoothly. Think about it Sean… Plz!!!!!

  • Like my parents used to say to me, I’m not angry I’m just disappointed ……… Was really looking forward to this the end of next month but totally understand the reasons behind it. I’m not going to cancel my Pre-order I’d only be fooling myself and acting like a child.

  • Let us help you!! :)

  • Make us some space whales and the pain will be forgotten =)
    Love you Shaun!

  • After I heard Sean Murray is a perfectionist, I got a little worried, but I thought maybe everything will be ok. Wait, what’s that? Another delay? Great, another one of those for “polishing”. But instead of a beta, to you know spot those things before and see if your servers will handle all the people playing. Nope, delays it less than a month away.

Games get ready for distribution months in advance so it’s going to be a day 1 patch/update anyways, so you had a few weeks to work on it still. What are you not telling us? Probably something huge like a game breaking bug they can’t find.

With that said, I don’t trust HG anymore.

I still have some hope for the game, but if it’s delayed one more time I’m canceling my preorder and not getting the game….if it even comes out this year :/

    • I already Canceled my Pre-order and wont be buying it at all. It was supposed to come out last year, and wasn’t ready. Now three weeks before Launch they “Delay” it till August. At this point, I Believe there will be another “Delay”. While it looks awesome, and I have been looking forward to it since i first saw stuff on it years ago. At this point, I am tired of waiting. Launch the game, Patch it. and Just go. Cause what happens when something goes wrong? You gunna take the game down for an “Indeterminate amount of time.” while you fix it?

    • And always the same excuse ”a small team ” im starting to get very worried about this excuse. If the game is a turd you guys already know what will be the excuse

  • And referring back to comment 170, the beta release on the old release of the game, will still let people who talk off participate in the beta, and be able to flood some special forms letting you know of any bugs and issues we find. A game of this scale needs a little help from the community Sean… Let us do our duty! :)

  • I wish more people were this kind to Fumito Ueda for his hard work on The Last Guardian’s delays that I’m sure it was more on Sony’s behalf for delaying it so long.

  • Honestly, this sucks. But I understand. Wanting to make an awesome game more polished means that it’ll be a better product when it is released. I’m looking forward to it. Plus, on the bright side, it gives me more time to finish all the other games I have yet to beat. A win/win I’d say.
And it’s awesome to see other people showing support for the entire Hello Games team, right on. But all the other people making it seem like their life is over and it’s the end of the world, to those people, chill out. You look like a bunch of whining kids who didn’t get their way.
But, again, take your time, Hello Games. Like I said, polish the game up and make it even better than what it would have been. :D

  • Though I look forward to playing this game *when it finally releases) I think that the timing of your delay less than a month to go is poor time management and secondly allowing the rumours to go on for 2 days unanswered was poor communication by HG.

With this in mind I’m left feeling somewhat unsure that you’ll be able to to provide decent support to customers when/if problems arise later.

I really don’t get this thing about UK getting games later than everyone else epescially from a UK based company And to see that were still at the back of the que is disheartening he’ll I’m only 1 hour away I’d come down and pick up a copy if I could get away with it lol.

Communication is key HG something you guys need to work on.

  • Games with Gold sucks for June, here’s hoping the PS Plus games for June are worth while. July too, need more games to tide me over for this delay.

Don’t make me buy the last Assassin’s Creed game to pass the time :( I don’t wanna spend more money so soon.

  • I am glad they took this approach. Too many game companies are releasing half finished crap nowadays. Then its patch, patch, patch and still its a piece of crap. My hats off to you Hello Games for being a responsible game company. /cheers

  • I canceled my preorder because of this. I know they are a small team but for being a game in develoment sense 2014 delayed from 2015 to 2016 I actaully expect much from a game being in develoment for 2 years and more. But this 3rd delay did it… Killed my hype and wanting this game… I’ll get a pc and prob pirate coz of that…

    • You’re entitled to your feelings, and to lose interest in the game, but using your frustration as an excuse to steal the game is rubbish. And saying that it’s the third delay is inaccurate. It had the vague release window of 2015, which was changed to June 2016, then later given the date of the 21st, so at most this is the second delay. Also, when games have nothing more than a release year attached to them, I don’t really consider that a date, so for me, this feels like the only delay it’s really gotten.

  • Take your time guys. Much better to be sure the launch goes smoothly. On a purely selfish note, late June was a bad time for me anyways. And 8/9, if it holds, isn’t a full two months, just a bit over six weeks, think of it that way, everybody. ;) Thank you for taking the time to answer, too. It was much more troubling as a fan being in limbo for awhile there… if I lived on that side of the pond, probably would have come rolling up to the studio with a truckload of Guinness to try to bribe an answer!

  • There is a part of me that will be slightly amused if this game is a flop because it is utterly cringe worthy reading some of these comments. A delay is not something to harangue Hello for as they are only a small team. Perhaps they could enlighten us with some more detail on what the point of the game actually is, beyond simply floating from planet to planet. I am sceptical because of the lack of detail.

Blog is full of kiss asses. Can’t believe I was like half of you, I’m ****ed off to he’ll. Been waiting for this game for years, never mind months like all the other wannabes on this blog. Spent crap loads on this game already and I haven’t even played it yet. Yeah I have respect for hello games for making this game, but sony can go F themselves for pushing people to pre order a game that isn’t even ready then changing the release date 2 weeks before its launched. Same goes for IGN for forcing hello games to do that stupid month long first look.

  • AntiHeroHimself

I say take all the time you need.

So many developers are so pressured by their Publishers to release their game early on that Games come out on finished, unpolished, and sometimes unplayable. It’s an insult to the consumer because essentially Publishers are banking on the fact that as long as the majority of the people enjoy the game, it doesn’t matter if vast minority feels as if the game is incomplete, and they will sell the game at the highest of its hype before running the chance of losing possible profit.

Honestly, it is quite refreshing to see a developer who knows that this is wrong and would rather take the time to make his product right before releasing it instead of releasing a broken product.

Even if this game was delayed until September, as long as the final product is as polished as possible, I will still be happy.

So kudos to you for being an awesome developer. Honestly I wasn’t sure I was going to get the game yet, but based on how you’re the one who came out to write this blog post, and that you’re committed to finishing the game properly, I really want to support your company, so I may pre-order the game if I can.

  • Please take as much time as you need! Who wants an unfinished game? :)

  • AntiHeroHimself

@jacob13231223 people like you are the reason games like destiny come out unfinished and unpolished. If you were a little bit more patient, we would have a lot better games to play right now.

Obviously you know nothing of game development, because when you have a small team making your game that’s potentially bigger than anything else that ever existed, you have to expect there’s going to be some delays. So please, stop commenting online.

    • londondungeon88

Your lips must hurt with all the behind your kissing

    • I like Destiny.

I spent £260 on Destiny without regrets. I’ve played it more than all my other 150 PS4 games put together,

    • Except Destiny was plauged by a myriad of other reasons in-company and during it’s development. Would you like some more wax for your cross?

  • I’d rather have a bug free game that was delayed than a buggy release date patched for two months after release. Looking forward to this one.

  • What is up with you idiots, can’t you wait another month?

    • Nah, the sad reality is that this hobby plagued with lots of entitled children and even more sadly… Manchildren, mouth breathing losers with an even bigger sense of entitlement. These whinny manchildren are just being more vocal. Most sensible gamers understand (That after some unfortunate setback, a FLOOD) that this small team want to make the best game they can.

    • IcedDice777

Spot on! It’s only a couple of weeks. “Manchildren, mouth breathing losers” . I fell off my chair at that.

  • It has been years since i first heard of NMS. i’m a bit disappointed but only because we were so close, so close…. Anyway, i stood in their side from the begininng, hell i aint leave it 2 months away from ACTUAL (hopefully…) release date.
Sean, about this post, as a true NMS fan, wanna know the only thing you wrote in it that really mattered to me?
This sentence: “The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine.” Boy i am sure you guys have shown just a 10-20% of what the game really is and can offer, so yeah, couple months more? Take all the time you need buddy, true fans that understand how incredibly wonderfull this will actually be, will always stick to your side.

    • Sean,
      Thank you for the update.

I am still buying the game, and very excited for it.
Releasing a quality product is important to us as well, and if you would like any help with testing, please contact me.

Good luck on finishing it up.

  • I guess It’s been delayed either because PlayStation VR or the new PlayStation neo (4.5) Dev kits which developers received a few weeks back which is backwards compatible with both Systems. If they port it using the new system it would work with both systems but if done on the old Dev kit it would’nt be 4K compatible without a software update. Makes sense
