No Man’s Sky Coming to PS4 in August

No Man’s Sky

Hello, Sean Murray from Hello Games here, working extremely hard on our game, No Man’s Sky.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit an play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

However, as we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special.

After a short delay, No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on August 9, in Europe August 10, and in the UK August 12.

Diplo on No Man’s SkyCreature on No Man’s Sky

We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right.

The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn’t been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation.

And despite all of that, development is genuinely going well. This is the hardest working, most talented team I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing. For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.

To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of No Man’s Sky years ago, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay.

Thank you so much,
Sean

  • I’m disappointed because it been delayed multiple times making me worry that it will never appear. That said take the time make it good but maybe tell us what is causing the delay? As procedure game it’s essentially graphics and math. So your not designing it world’s just testing and ensuring error correction works?

You guys could ask the Minecraft programmer community if you need extra help as Minecraft generates based on a similar way.

I think the biggest thing is communication help us understand the delay is it a feature that is giving you trouble? Is it the equation?

  • I don’t mind the delay. It gives me time to catch up on a dew backlogs. What Inwould like to know though – when is this game gonna be available for Asia? I have a HK account and sometimes there are games that do not makenit to the HK PS Store

  • HA!!!… idiots! Sorry, Hello Games Team, I can’t believe how unappreciative some of these little brats are. You guys are doing your best to bring us something that will stand out, and can potentially be enjoyed for years, and these selfish little pricks want it NOW, like they’re still 6! They must have gotten a parent to type out their little temper tantrums, because there’s no way they used a keyboard, since they’re still writing with crayons. All of us mature individuals can easily understand, and appreciate the fact that you respect us enough to want to bring us a quality product. Thanks a ton, and I hope you guys don’t take any of these foolish comments to heart. Keep up the great work! NANU-NANU!

  • Yea this sucks I pre-ordered the game, bought a ps4 and worked a few of my vacation days around NMS…you guys should really come out and reinforce the new release day so we have a better idea if the game will really be ready this time around..

  • Man this kinda sucks but dang what the heck could you be doing to make this freaking awesome game even awesome? I have the slightest idea but gosh I am excited.

  • This game seems interesting and, from the very limited research I’ve done on it it is huge. Not sure what all the fuss about another delay is about. It happens when you are making something like this. It might bother me more if I was as obsessed as some of these posts sound. Then again some of the posts are extreme over reactions. Delays happen. Now if the game comes out and it bombs I would understand the frustration but, at least play the game before you insult and belittle the developers.

“…at least play the game before you insult and belittle the developers.”
We can’t play it if they don’t release it.

  • Really looking forward to this, shame about the delay but these things happen. The only thing that annoys me is that the UK have to wait until after USA and even the EU to play the game.

  • Damn really I thought it was just a rumor. Now I gotta wait again this is turning out to be like the episode from South Park. When cartman gets a amusement park and won’t let people in. The more you delay the more people want to buy it. Nice move Sean I’m on to you buddy. But at least give us a demo let us see first hand what you and your team have for us so far.

  • Hello Sean,

I am actually very glad for this delay, as if it was released on the predicted date without it being fully perfect in your eyes then there would be a lot of problems that would need multiple patches. I’m also quite glad because i can save money to pre-order this on my birthday in July, and to waste it all again on Black Ops 3 supply drops! Maybe as a pre-order bonus for those who did purchase the game early could have an offline closed(kind of, i guess) beta about a month before release so that you could get community feedback? Also, is the game going to run on multiple servers similar to that of Crackdown 3 or are we going to see one gargantuan server when the game is released? I respect your decision Sean, and i presume by your well detailed reasons that the delay was the right thing to do. I know you have a very small but strong team, and i also know that your most detailed project before this was the Joe Danger series! I hope i can find the letters D A N G E R in the galaxy somewhere!

Thank you for your time reading.

    • It is far more likely that this game is effectively singleplayer except when multiple online explorers warp into the same star system. At that point it can dynamically spawn a multiplayer lobby with a small number of slots to accept late joiners. If programmed correctly it will also need to spawn additional instances as more explorers warp in to a system whose multiplayer lobby has no available slots.

As a result of this significant persistent changes may not be immediately witnessed by explorers in another instance. The destruction of a space station in one instance cannot be simultaneously observed in another instance as that would demonstrate effect without cause – i.e. the space station would mysteriously disappear. However, you would only need to warp out of the system and warp back to be updated on all the significant persistent changes that everyone playing online had made since your last warp.

    • There is nothing to indicate that No Man’s Sky has a gargantuan unsharded server like EVE: Online. That game has one instance, and allows unlimited groups of players to congregate in one location for massive space battles. However, this is only possible due to the use of a time dilation mechanic which slows down the simulation to a crawl as the calculations skyrocket.

It may be that No Man’s Sky only allows pairs of players to encounter each other – which would mean it had dynamically instanced multiplayer lobbies containing a mere two slots on sharded servers – and was only as tangibly social as Journey. However, there is a strong likelihood that the centre of the Galaxy would support more than two slots so that when you eventually reached it you would encounter other explorers, as the likelihood of an encounter increases exponentially the further everyone gets toward a common goal until it approaches a climactic certainty and the pervading sense of isolation and alienation gives way to a social celebration.

      ^
Obviously, all this is speculation. No man will no the game’s limitations until it finally arrives.

  • we will wait…

  • Hello Sean, I’ve been following the progress of your magnificent game no man’s sky & I would like to let you know I really looking forward to getting my hand on it. I truly realise that being a small team with huge punts of work to do can cause problems, I for one have no problem waiting an extra few weeks till it releases. I wish you & the team the best of luck.

  • No worries, keep it up!

In a world flooded with botched early access titles, I’m more then happy to wait a bit longer for an actually complete game.

  • I’m glad to hear that you are polishing the game to its best. I cant wait for August and it would be great if you made a new trailer or demo or something like that.

  • This isn’t a copy and pasted game like CoD or AC. This is something new and fresh. Would you really want them to rush an un-polished product, so it can end up on Kotaku or IGN (and then the “bandwagonners”), blasting them for a buggy game? It’s ok to expect delays.
It’s funny that people put a 1-5$ pre-order down and are wanting to cancel. I didn’t know those 5$ would be a deal breaker. Anyways, just like Mighty No.9, I will continue to happily wait for my LE version.
Thank you Sean and Hello Games. I look forward to getting lost in NMS and enjoying every minute.

  • Well, what’s a 6 weeks delay compared to the promise of months of awesome exploration? You’re paving a new way of game creation, no surprise you encounter difficulties never seen before. Real fans are with you Hello Games!

    • Actually, it is a seven week delay not six.

    • True, although not changing my feelings about it I wondered why, and came to the conclusion that people raging about that delay are just the ones who would have played NMS for 2 or 3 weeks then switched for another one, and so on…No lose but rather a gain for the community if they give up now.

  • Should release a book of lore beforehand give people something to spruce up on before diving in

  • Sean,

I don’t mind you guys delaying the game for a bit..
I understand what you mean by polishing off the last few bits..
But, make sure that you really deliver what Hello Games has promised..

    Please..

    Good Luck!!

    :D

  • Gutted to have to wait until August, but I am sure it will be worth it. You guys are attempting something very special, and your hard work is very much appreciated.
It’s only so disappointing because it so late in the development, it must have been so close to Submission, I would have thought you would no sooner you wanted more time with. While knowing earlier would still have been disappointing, it would not have been so bad.. Also the amount of time between the rumour and confirmation was very bad, the rumour should have been confirmed on Thursday, even if you could not supply a new date straight away, the not knowing was bad, and did not show anybody in a good light.

  • Kind of a D move when we were in sight of the finish line.

A delayed game is eventually a good game :D

    tell that to Ubi-Soft lol

  • I’d rather deal with a delay and get a complete and great game than rush it and it come out broken. Too many developers these days are trying to get the money and rush their games out. That’s how we end up with average games that were supposed to be blockbusters like The Division. I’m glad you guys are taking the time to get it done right. Thanks guys!

  • No worries from me and my friends, do what you have to do to make the game great. To those that are too immature to handle a slight delay, this game probably isn’t for you. No one cares if your upset so go cry in a corner, and have your mommy change your diaper.

  • Aww life can actually be hard sometimes. Explore the real world for a little bit. Maybe you’ll learn something that will help you in the game.

  • Hey Sean,

I really respect that you’re willing to take the extra time to get it right. Too many games get released too early just to start making money. It’s obvious you and your team care deeply about No Man’s Sky, and a few extra weeks of waiting won’t kill us. I’d gladly wait another year if that’s what you felt you needed to deliver the best possible game you can. Keep up the good work, and don’t let the nay-Sayers get you down.

  • Best of luck to you as you finish working on the game. I am patiently waiting and looking forward to it. I would also like to apologize for the completely inappropriate backlash you have received from some. Disappointment is one thing but A line has definitely been crossed.

  • Fine with delay to iron bugs, reason I am cancelling pre-order is the archaic bull of having to release a game on a Friday in the UK.
Bethesda got it right by releasing Far Harbour DLC at the same time world wide

  • I like the comment about the delay, while the finish line was in sight, being a D move. It reminds me of the military, and how they train people to deal with extreme disappoinment by letting the truck/chopper (at extraction point) leave when it’s finally in sight. And then they have to walk home. It should not be interpreted as a D move. It’s preparing people for real life situations. Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not over until it’s over.

I think issuing death threats to game developers is the real D move here. I hope such people will one day grow up. They remind me of my little, four year old, niece, who has yet to learn that other kids at the playground also like to use the swing. So she has to wait a couple of minutes, all disappointed. At that age it’s cute. But when you’re old enough to write it gets a little sad, really…

Anyway, I wish Hello Games all the best! I can’t wait to get my hands on No Man’s Sky! I wish it every success!

  • I don’t understand why some people would lose their minds over this and send death threats to Sean and his team at Hello Games, just because the game has to be delayed for an extra three months? they’re just fixing up some glitches and bugs that can possibly compromise our enjoyment of this game, we should be thankful for them for delaying the game so that we can enjoy the experience even more without to deal with a broken game unlike EA’s BF4, but then again that’s the internet for you and it’s complaining on it’s first world problems for ya. So anyway, I just can’t wait to get my copy of No Man’s Sky on August 9th and just enjoy the game as it is and see what worlds are out there in my spaceship are for me to explore in the huge galaxy of NMS and go find some unknown life forms, plants, planets, and even star systems for me to named, maybe I might even find some possible other hidden secrets in NMS to find. I want to thank Sean and all your members at Hello Games for doing what you guys need to do in order for all of us to be enjoying your video game without to deal with it just being a rush and broken product right out of the gate unlike what some other game companies do these days.

  • everyshuffle3412

When I first hered that no man’s sky was going to be delayed, I didn’t believe it. With my opinion I think that I am mad that it got delayed, but I am happy that you are not rushing to get it out and that you are fixing everything that is wrong.

  • Thank you, Sean. I’m happy that enough love is invested into the game to allow you guys the ability to bring all its intended glory into a final build… even at the expense of an extended release date! I’m anxious to play it as you all envisioned it.

  • Any chance you can make it August 10th. ( Sorry Birthday month :) ) Anyway the bright side is it gives more time to play Might #9. Hope it pays off in the end for you and its worth that wait unlike what happen with ubisoft with Watchdogs.

  • Fine with development taking longer, but cancelling due to releasing later in UK. Stupid system considering I have pre-ordered to download. Bethesda did it right recently with their Far Harbour DLC same download time for everyone.

  • ShadowDragoon21

Well it’s not like they’re creating an entire universe or something…. Oh wait they are. Lol a 1980 science fiction universe of alien culture and exploration. If it needs a lil Polish to give it that stellar shine I can wait a lil while. Lol keep it up guys can’t wait to see some awesome planets and epic space battle. :-)

  • + BRAVO_SIX98 – Pure definition of a impatient brat, full on internet keyboard warrior! (bet ”it” will sell its PS4 over one game)

Good to see the Game Dev’s are taking extra time to produce a game on such large scale, id rather wait for a bug free game, specially this type of game!

Good work so far hello games, i’ve pre-ordered it, cant wait still, but can wait for perfection of the game!

  • Take your time making the game I dont care if you delay it another 6 months, don’t worry about the people living rent-free in their parents basements that don’t have nothing else better to do.

  • if it makes this ultimate game even better then i am fine with the release and developers of no mans sky don’t worry just take your time

  • I bought PS4 solely for NMS 2 months ago. Though it does suck that I have to wait a bit longer, I can just play games I haven’t beat yet. Plus, August is the beginning of the end of summer. That’s the time to start gaming anyway. Let the creators make it even better. Chill, everyone!

  • THE-GRIM-RABBIT

I will believe their promises when I see them played out before me.
Hello Game’s have been very misleading about this title, and lied about the release date.

  • Well, while I’m a little disappointed this is not unexpected. This game potentially is going to change the direction of gaming, I think it can wait a few more weeks. Actually you can delay it until November because this is probably going to fu%k up any chance I had to study for and pass the P.E. exam in Oct. Never had so much anticipation for a silly game…but this is no ordinary game. I’m also glad it was not released in beta like some other indie games. Take your time, get it right and let us have it when it’s epic. I cancelled my pre-order but I’ll still buy it when it comes out.

  • I’m so glad I didn’t hop on the over priced indie garbage hype train known as NMS. Seriously a game with this many problems for so many years will still not be fixed in 2 months time or even the next year. It’s a $20 indie at best and I still wouldn’t play it if they gave it to us through plus. August is when all the AAA titles start hitting again and I really hope this gets swallowed alive and as a result the company has to close doors. No way ever could this heap of trash be worth what they are charging, and if the rest of you idiots wanna be paying beta testers for the next 6-12 months have fun with that…!

  • It’s cool. Take as long as you need. If you need to delay further, then do so. Games that need waiting for are usually the best games. It would be more insulting if you did a Ubisoft and released a broken unplayable game.

  • I don’t really care that there is a delay if it’s to make the game better overall, that’s fine and to be expected really. But releasing it three days later in the UK than the rest of the world? That’s just stupid. There is absolutely no good reason for that. I can’t imagine what nonsense someone came up with to justify the difference but it’s bull and I genuinely hope that people don’t buy the game now because of that.

  • take your time hello games! its not easy but i can wait 2 moths… got to get me some money. been following since the start and am looking forward to playing it. you have my support…

  • Aw man! *sob*

Just kidding! I haven’t taken any time off for this yet, so no worries. You guys do what you need to do. I’ll just keep playing Minecraft or something else in the meantime. ;)

  • theoneeyedpoodle

What I want to know is,What the hell is going on in August that a lot of you won’t have time for video games?

  • Man sorry but this is ridiculous._._ in my line of work if i say a date for my clients and not give the exact date, i loose the TRUST they placed in me, and this is exactly what is happening here. Not care if your team is small, the price of the game is the same as that of a big team, if this is the problem then hire more people it is so good companies make. All the mystery on top of the game it is cool and a good marketing ploy, but only for a while, but now a month before the launch more mystery became boring. I do not know if the game will be amazing as you said, i know too little about it yet i trusted you. But i loose my trust in you guys. Unfortunately. And regret having bought the pre ordem. This is a lack of respect for those who trusted in you guys .

    • That’s your line of work, not theirs. If you don’t like it, you must change. Besides this is just a game, it’s not the end of the world if you play it now or tomorrow.
BTW, if you pay (pre order) for something you can’t use right now is your problem, not someone else’s.

    • You work at hello game by chance? It does not so do not meddle, snoop.

    • As you said yourself its my problem and hello games then why you care to comment? La mente de su propio negocio y que me cuido de mi, si no puedo esperar para jugar mi problema. Va encontrar a sus problemas.

  • Death threats really!! Those do that should get arrested for there stupidly. Sean I know your working hard on this game and some legal a stuff cause of the delay. There are many who still fully support you in one of them.

  • Come ooooooon man! I was so excited to play this game over the summer because thats the most time of the year when I get to relax. Im sure al you students out there are ****ed off as well because now we wont get as much time to play. You guys had a pretty long time to make this game and you still delay it. AAAAND on top of that I have to pay 80 bucks and I wont even get the limited edition! So If you want to be greedy and rob us canadians of our money and on top of that delay the game…. then I am probably going to cancel my pre order. Thanks alot I just lost all my hype.

  • Can’t wait to play this game. I wonder if anyone at hellogames has a snapchat?? Also would love a new q&a interview with some fresh game play, equipment and ship upgrades work, some clues on how the fractions work, and maybe some more exotic planets. “A few of the games key moments”? Making navigation easier? Smoothing landing and docking? You guys leave us on the edge of our seats. Good jod I’m so excited for this game

  • OK, so I’m just going to say it. Delays are usually a good sign for a game, especially a game as big as this. It means they’re working to make the game as best it can be and not trying to release a broken game. BUT, delaying a game that has this much hype and has been in development for 6 years should not be delayed for something as small as a polish. I mean come on. Something that small can be fixed in an update just like almost every other game does. But, acknowledging the fact that what I say isn’t going to change anything, since the game is delayed I think they should release a demo for all the fans who have been waiting for so long. Not hating, just saying what I think.

    • 6 years? NMS was first announced at VGX in December of 2013. If you’re counting, that’s exactly two and a half years ago. I’m disappointed with the delay, too, but let’s avoid wild exaggerations.
